Admit Weekend Coordinator, UGABioMandla Msipa (he/him) is an undergraduate at Stanford University pursuing a BA in Political Science with a minor in Education.
A Zimbabwean-American, Mandla spent 13 years in Harare under the SJET school system – he attained IGCSE and A Level qualifications from Cambridge International. After graduating in 2021, Mandla worked as a Junior Master at St John's College, Harare, primarily teaching in the History, English, and Drama departments.
At Stanford, Mandla is an International Mentor at Bechtel and a member of Stanford College Democrats, one of Stanford's political action organisations. In the summer of 2023, Mandla will be working in the DC office of a Democratic US Senator as a legislative intern.
Mandla's research interests lie at the intersection of politics, education, and the internet. Areas of interest are currently: strengthening governance structures in K-12 education; encouraging teacher-student relationships at the system level; promoting digital literacy in classrooms; investigating internet exposure in the early crystallisation of political ideology; scrutinising ICT as a tool for democratisation in Sub-Saharan Africa. -

Master of Arts Student in Political Science, admitted Spring 2024BioTom Nachtigal is a PhD student in the international and comparative education program. She's interested in researching how international organizations influence national civic education policies via promotion of social and emotional learning. Particularly, she's looking at how values of democracy, rule of law, human rights, and national identity are imbued in conflict-affected areas, in light of international education policies informed by SEL. Trained as an international lawyer, she served as a legal advisor in the Israeli government, practicing international law and human rights, an experience that informed her interests in civic education from the lens of international politics.

Vaidehi Natu

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Vaidehi Natu is a developmental neuroscientist. Her research program aims to study how the human brain matures from infancy to adulthood, as it acquires new life skills and behaviors: What are the origins of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain development during infancy? How does the trajectory of neural mechanisms unfold during development, as school-aged children acquire complex skills such as reading or face recognition? What are some of the parallels in brain development across primate species? What changes occur in the brain in developmental disorders such as autism, multiple sclerosis, and dyslexia?
She uses a multi-modal approach by combining various neuroimaging techniques including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), quantitative MRI (qMRI), and diffusion MRI (dMRI) as well as behavioral observations, histology, comparative methods across humans and macaques, and intracranial electroencephalography. Combining complementary techniques provides a unified understanding of how the brain’s anatomy, function, and behavior co-develop to achieve complex human skills. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsResearch Activities:
My research focuses on the environmental and equity dimensions of intensive food production systems, and the food security dimensions of low-input systems. I have been involved in a number of field-level research projects around the world and have published widely on issues related to climate impacts on agriculture, distributed irrigation systems for diversified cropping, nutrient use and loss in agriculture, biotechnology, aquaculture and livestock production, biofuels development, food price volatility, and food policy analysis.
Teaching Activities:
I teach courses on the world food economy, food and security, aquaculture science and policy, human society and environmental change, and food-water-health linkages. These courses are offered to graduate and undergraduate students through the departments of Earth System Science, Economics, History, and International Relations.

South Asia Working Group Fellow, South Asian StudiesBioShikha Nehra is a PhD Candidate in Anthropology at Stanford University. She is conducting dissertation research on the emerging idioms and forms of political belonging in India's north-eastern state of Assam. Her ethnographic and archival research in Assam explores questions of political membership through its sociocultural terrain, tracing the contribution of different ethnic and literary associations in claiming recognition as indigenous communities through complex registers of language, identity and belonging. Her broader fields of interest include nationalism, populism, state and sovereignty, bureaucracy, citizenship, subjectivity, and identity-formation.
