    BioMatteo Cartura is a postdoctoral researcher in cardiovascular science, focusing on the clinical association between genetic variants identified in GWAS studies and the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. He obtained his PhD at the Institute for Vascular Signalling, with a research focus on the immunological functions of endothelial cells in atherosclerosis.     BioDr. Josh Gillard is a Canadian biomedical data scientist with experience in bioinformatics, machine learning, and immunology. After completing a BSc and a MSc in Experimental Medicine at McGill university, he relocated to the Netherlands for his PhD in bioinformatics at Radboud University in Nijmegen. During his PhD, he gained experience analyzing and interpreting complex immunological data (bulk and single-cell transcriptomics, high-dimensional cytometry, high-throughput proteomics) derived from human observational or intervention studies (vaccination and experimental human infection). This work revealed molecular and cellular correlates of clinically important endpoints such as disease severity, symptom progression, and antibody responses. In 2022, Josh relocated to Stanford to join the Gaudilliere lab to develop and apply multi-omic data integration and machine learning techniques, establishing that early gestational immune dysregulation can predict preterm birth. Since 2024, in the Ashley lab, Josh is developing deep learning models to investigate aberrant splicing in cardiovascular disease.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a biomedical researcher focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms governing vascular smooth muscle cell (SMC) behavior in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. My work investigates how signaling pathways, including Notch3 and Thrombospondin-1, regulate SMC phenotypic switching, fibrous cap stability, and plaque vulnerability in atherosclerosis, with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic targets to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Her research focuses on identifying genetic variants underlying complex diseases, applying polygenic scores for disease risk prediction and subtype identification, and integrating genetic, environmental, and clinical data to improve individual-level risk stratification.

    BioAs a clinical exercise physiologist, sport scientist, and biomechanist, I study the mechanical, physiological, and molecular determinants of human performance and health. I am certified as a Performance and Sport Scientist (CPSS), Strength and Conditioning Specialist with Distinction (CSCS,*D), and Clinical Exercise Physiologist.

    I am a Postdoctoral Scholar in Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University and a member of the Stanford Bioinformatics Core and Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance. My training has been supported by the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance Postdoctoral Fellowship, the NIH T32 Research Training in Myocardial Biology at Stanford, and a two-year NIH/NHLBI Loan Repayment Program award in Research in Emerging Areas Critical to Human Health.

    My research integrates clinical exercise physiology, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, biomechanics, and multi-omics to better understand how physical activity influences cardiovascular health, biological adaptation, and athletic performance. Through the NIH-funded Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium, I analyze large clinical, multi-omic, multi-tissue, multi-modality, and multi-species datasets to identify mechanisms and biomarkers of exercise response.

    I also collaborate on projects involving sports cardiology and electrocardiography, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, exercise and neuromuscular disease, and athlete performance, including work with Stanford Baseball and external sports-science collaborators.

    Teaching and mentoring are central to my academic work. As a first-generation college graduate and Mexican American with Indigenous heritage, I am committed to creating supportive and inclusive pathways for trainees from underrepresented backgrounds. I serve as a Postdoctoral Mentoring Coach with the Stanford Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, participate in the Stanford PRISM program, and mentor prospective and current medical students through the MAVERICs program within the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute.

    My long-term goal is to lead an independent research program that combines exercise physiology, multi-omics, physical activity, nutrition, cardiovascular science, and sports performance while mentoring the next generation of scientists.

    BioDr. Andrew Nguyen is a Cardiologist and a Clinical Scholar in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology Program. He then completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford University, followed by fellowship training in Cardiovascular Medicine also at Stanford University.

    As a non-invasive cardiologist, Dr. Nguyen cares for patients undergoing cancer therapy as well as cancer survivors in the Stanford Health Care Cardio-Oncology Program. He provides evidenced-based cardiovascular care for patients throughout their cancer journey while managing and preventing treatment toxicities. Dr. Nguyen is a physician scientist who is mentored by Dr. Paul Cheng and Dr. Tom Quertermous. His research blends his clinical interest in cardio-oncology with basic science to understand the complex interplay between cancer angiogenesis and ischemic heart disease. He is a recipient of the AHA Postdoctoral Fellowship Award, ACC/Merck Research Fellowship Award, and NIH F32 Award.
