Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe underlying theme of the Appel Lab at Stanford University integrates concepts and approaches from supramolecular chemistry, natural/synthetic materials, and biology. We aim to develop supramolecular biomaterials that exploit a diverse design toolbox and take advantage of the beautiful synergism between physical properties, aesthetics, and low energy consumption typical of natural systems. Our vision is to use these materials to solve fundamental biological questions and to engineer advanced healthcare solutions.

Parth Arora

BioParth is joining the School of Medicine as a Life Science Research Professional for the Department of Pediatrics. As a part of Dr. Christin Kuo’s Lab, Parth is driven to support the team’s mission and actively contribute to the intellectual environment of the lab. He recently graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago with a B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology. During his time at UIC, he has been a part of several research projects where he collaborated with Dr. Rhonda D. Kineman to design a research project to investigate variations in hepatic gene expression throughout the phases of the estrus cycle and study the impact of sexual dimorphism in the progression of the nonalcoholic fatty liver. He believes this position would be an excellent opportunity for him to apply his skills while engaging in multidisciplinary projects that would make a real-life impact. He is thrilled to receive this opportunity and looks forward to being a part of the Stanford Community.

Alisa Arunamata
Clinical Associate Professor, Pediatrics - Cardiology
BioDr. Alisa Arunamata is a pediatric cardiologist and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. She specializes in cardiac imaging of the fetus through adulthood and provides comprehensive care to families and patients from the time of fetal diagnosis to post-operative management after cardiac surgery. She holds a number of leadership positions in education and hospital administration. She leads the pediatric cardiology fellowship training program as the Director, and was previously the Program Director of the Advanced Non-Invasive Imaging Fellowship as well as the Medical Director of Acute Cardiac Care at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.
Dr. Arunamata has a deep interest in improving clinical outcomes for children with congenital and acquired heart disease, with a primary focus on refining the assessment and contribution of the right ventricle in disease and health.
She graduated early with a degree in Molecular and Cell Biology (Biochemistry) from the University of California, Berkeley, obtained her medical degree at New York University School of Medicine and completed pediatric residency and cardiology fellowship training at Stanford. She was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society in 2019 and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and American Society of Echocardiography (FASE). -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur laboratory investigates the pathogenesis of varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection, focusing on the functional roles of particular viral gene products in pathogenesis and virus-cell interactions in differentiated human cells in humans and in Scid-hu mouse models of VZV cell tropisms in vivo, and the immunobiology of VZV infections.

BioI specialize in providing cardiac critical care to infants, children and adults with congenital heart disease and heart failure. I am the Associate Director for the Pulmonary Artery Reconstruction Program at Stanford, helping to coordinate comprehensive multidisciplinary care for children with severe pulmonary artery abnormalities and right ventricular dysfunction. I was a Faculty Fellow at the Stanford Center for Biodesign in 2019-2020 and continue to work on development of new technologies for the unmet needs of pediatric patients. I have an interest in physician wellness and completed the Wellness Director course through the WellMD Center at Stanford.

Also developing next generation modeling and image interaction with Stanford engineers and educators, to promote personalized surgical training in VR and advanced educational programs in congenital heart disease.

Rosa Bacchetta

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsIn the coming years, I plan to further determine the genetic and immunological basis of diseases with autoimmunity or immune dysregulation in children. I believe that much can still be learned from the in depth mechanistic studies of pediatric autoimmune diseases. Genomic analysis of the patients' samples has become possible which may provide a rapid indication of altered target molecules. I plan to implement robust functional studies to define the consequences of these genetic abnormalities and bridge them to the patient's clinical phenotype.
Understanding functional consequences of gene mutations in single case/family first and then validating the molecular and cellular defects in other patients with similar phenotypes, will anticipate and complement cellular and gene therapy strategies.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsPrevention of osteoporosis begins in childhood and adolescence by measures that maximize acquistion of bone mineral during the critical adolescent years. Body mass, calcium nutriture, physical activity, growth and sex steroid hormones, and genetic factors are all thought to be important determinants of bone mass although the relative contribution of each remains controversial.

BioAs a Pediatric Oncologist, Palliative Care Physician, and Phase I and End– of– Life Care Clinical Investigator, I am intimately aware of the distress experienced by children with advanced cancer and the ethical and end– of– life/bereavement issues surrounding their disease progression. I currently serve as the Chief of the Division of Quality of Life and Pediatric Palliative Care here at Stanford, as well as the Director of the Quality of Life for All (QoLA) Program. Additionally, I serve as the Associate Chief Quality Officer for Patient Experience and Holistic Care. In my past career at St Jude, I served as the Director of our large Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program for more than a decade. My research interests include ethical considerations surrounding enrollment in Phase I clinical trials, AYA palliative oncology care, end– of– life decision making, grief and bereavement, integrating palliative care into the ongoing care of children with cancer as well as patient– reported outcomes and pain and symptom control in the context of pediatric oncology care. I have received significant extramural funding for my research, and I have participated in dozens of studies related to pediatric palliative care. I have authored ~300 academic works on a broad array of palliative care subjects. In sum, I am a recognized global expert and leader in the field of Pediatric Palliative Care.

Shalmali Bane
Research Assistant, Pediatrics - Neonatology
BioShalmali Bane is doctoral student in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. She is a trainee with the Center for Population Health Sciences, in the Stanford School of Medicine. She works with Dr. Suzan Carmichael on examining social determinants of reproductive health and perinatal outcomes. Shalmali grew up in India and received a biology degree from Stanford, with a focus in Neurobiology. Prior to graduate school, she was a healthcare consultant with the Analysis Group, where she focused on survey research, literature reviews, and budget impact modelling. She is passionate about equity and inclusion initiatives and serves on her departmental JEDI committee. She hopes to meld all of these experiences together in her current work: applying rigorous epidemiological methods to study how factors like socially determined race/ethnicity and socio-economic position impact the experiences of birthing persons.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Bannett leads the Advanced Informatics for Pediatric Mental Health lab. The lab uses data-driven methods to develop reliable quality measures for management of children with developmental and mental health conditions in community-based primary care. Current studies integrate large language model analysis of clinical text to accurately assess quality of care, with the ultimate goal of improving health care delivery and outcomes for children with developmental and mental health conditions.
