Akshay Paruchuri

BioI'm a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, advised by Professor Ehsan Adeli. I'm affiliated with the Stanford Translational AI (STAI) Lab and the Stanford Vision and Learning (SVL) Lab. I earned my PhD in computer science at UNC Chapel Hill under the advisement of Professor Henry Fuchs. I build and evaluate multimodal AI systems, from general-purpose methods for interactive computing to applications in healthcare. Currently, I'm working toward a future where multimodal AI can safely and reliably integrate into healthcare systems in order to improve the entire patient journey, from advanced diagnostic imaging and surgical support to all-day health monitoring and management, with the aim to achieve better therapeutic outcomes for cancer and aging-related diseases. I'm generally interested in opportunities that would allow me to continue to deepen my research expertise while leading and working on projects that benefit people everywhere, whether through foundational research, real-world products, or shaping how these systems are evaluated and deployed.
Previously, I was a visiting researcher at IDSIA USI-SUPSI working with Professor Piotr Didyk on the interpretability of multimodal language models (MLMs) with respect to capabilities such as visual perception. I've published in leading venues on topics such as remote health sensing (WACV, NeurIPS), 3D reconstruction (ECCV, MICCAI), LLM-based conversational agents for personal health (EMNLP, Nature Communications), and energy-efficient operation of smart glasses (ISMAR). I've done internships at Google AR/VR, Google Consumer Health Research, and Kitware. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research focuses on utilizing machine learning models to enhance the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of clinical disorders. I am interested in multi-modal learning, combining imaging data like MRI and CT scans with non-imaging data such as electronic health records, creating more holistic and accurate diagnostic models. I am also interested in the robustness of deep neural networks under domain shifts, investigating how models perform when faced with changes in input data distributions.
Finally, I am interested in early biomarker identification using AI model interpretability, to enable the early detection and targeted treatment of chronic disorders. -

Suraj received his PhD in Oncology from the University of Cambridge (24’), where he developed a new bioelectronic cell enrichment platform utilizing altered glycosylation patterns for the early detection of esophageal cancer. With a background in electrochemistry, surface functionalization, liquid biopsy, and molecular diagnostics, he is passionate about developing portable sensor technologies that can be translated into the clinic to facilitate timely diagnosis and monitoring. -

She earned a Ph.D. in Global Health from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and a Master of Science in Nutrition from the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico (INSP). Her research focuses on generating evidence for interventions and policy recommendations aimed at improving the dietary quality of children to impact their health and development. Currently, she is employing a community-engaged approach to design nutrition interventions and policy recommendations that aim to reduce the consumption of ultra-processed foods among low-income children to narrow the gap in health disparities.

BioHey there! I was born in the small town of Selkirk, Manitoba, but lived most of my life in Edmonton, Alberta. I completed my Bachelor of Science at Kings University, focusing on biology and did undergrad research on Pink Pigmented Facultative Methylotrophs - bacteria that degrade petrochemicals. Following graduation, I became a Research Technician with Exciton Technologies Inc., a research and development company producing silver-based wound care products for treating infections. In 2016, I joined Dr. Benjamin Willing’s lab in Agriculture, Food, and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Alberta and completed a Master of Science focusing on how certain husbandry changes impact the development of the gastrointestinal microbiota, Salmonella infection resistance, and immune response in broiler production. In 2024, I completed my PhD in the department of Microbiology & Immunology at UBC, working with Dr. Carolina Tropini to understand the impact of osmotic stress on the gut microbiome.

Javier Perez-Garcia

BioJavier Perez-Garcia is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Stanford University. His research has been focused on the integration of multi-omic data (e.g., genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, and microbiome) to identify potential biomarkers of treatment response for complex diseases like asthma. His research background includes experience both in molecular biology techniques (e.g., DNA extraction and sequencing libraries preparation) and bioinformatic analyses (e.g., processing of raw omic data, association studies at genomic scale, or multi-omic integration through machine learning and quantitative trait loci analyses). He holds a Ph.D. in Health Sciences and a B.Sc. in Pharmacy from the University of La Laguna (Spain).

Amalia Perna

BioDr. Perna received her education at the University of Urbino (BSc in Biological Science) and at the University of Trieste (MSc in Functional Genomics).
She obtained her Ph.D. in Neuroscience/Medical Sciences in 2021, from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) in collaboration with the Swiss Integrative Center for Human Health (SICHH). During her doctoral studies, she investigated the molecular players involved in the neurodegenerative process, with special attention to Notch signaling modulation in the neuronal demise after kainic acid (KA)-induced excitotoxicity
With funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), Dr. Perna joined Prof. Thomas Montine's lab at Stanford University and extended her doctoral research work to single-cell technologies such as single-nucleus RNA-seq. In February 2022 she was appointed as a postdoctoral fellow in Montine Lab.
Dr. Perna’s research aims to elucidate the modulation of signaling pathways in the different cell types of the brain after the perturbation of its homeostasis. She is also interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal regeneration/recovery after damage and in neurodegenerative diseases. -
Ashley Phoenix

BioDr. Ashley Phoenix earned her B.S. in Biological Sciences from the College of Charleston, where her passion for neuroscience first took root through undergraduate research on drug seeking behavior at the Medical University of South Carolina. She went on to complete an M.S. in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, strengthening her scientific foundation before earning her M.D. at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Her research career has spanned diverse yet interconnected realms of neuroscience — from investigating post-stroke cognitive decline at MUSC, to exploring the neurodevelopmental basis of disorders such as Rett syndrome at the NIH National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, to contributing to neurosurgery research at Wake Forest with a focus on cognition and perioperative outcomes.
Now, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Neuroanesthesia Laboratory of Dr. Miles Berger at Stanford, Dr. Phoenix is uniting her lifelong fascination with the brain and cognitive decline, and her future clinical practice in anesthesiology. Her current work focuses on elucidating the mechanisms behind — and developing early detection strategies for — postoperative delirium in the elderly surgical population.
Through this fellowship, Dr. Phoenix is building the foundation for her career as a physician-scientist, committed to advancing patient care while pursuing research that safeguards cognitive health in the perioperative setting. -
Tanmoy Sarkar Pias

BioI am currently working on multimodal, multi-task foundation models to detect cancer and improve surgery. I am exploring image segmentation models, foundation models, and reinforcement learning with agents. My previous work spans a range of directions, including knowledge-guided machine learning models, systematic evaluation of high-risk models, mitigation of deficiencies and biases, automatic generation of gradient-based test cases, decision boundary estimation and analysis of deep learning models, and developing approaches to make machine learning models more fair and reliable.

Edward Pimentel

BioEdward Pimentel is a postdoctoral scholar in the lab of Prof. Tom Soh. After receiving his BS in Chemistry at BYU and pursuing the total synthesis of a natural product with anticancer activity in the lab of Dr. Merritt Andrus, Edward was the first graduate student in the lab of Dr. Jeffrey Martell, where his PhD work centered on using DNA nanostructures to accelerate catalytic reactions and building an ultrahigh-throughput DNA-encoded reaction screening platform. Now as a postdoctoral scholar, his research focuses on applying functional nucleic acids to solve problems in diagnostic and sensing for human health. In addition to his research, Edward is a passionate mentor and has been involved in mentoring programs at every stage of his career. He is now a coordinator for the SURPAS Someone Like Me Peer Mentoring program.

Prince Allawadhi

BioMy research focuses on immune-stromal crosstalk in pancreatic diseases, with an emphasis on how myofibroblasts and macrophages drive inflammation, fibrosis, and multi-organ dysfunction. By integrating patient-derived organoids, zebrafish models, and multi-omics, I aim to unravel the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying pancreatic injury and repair. I am developing cutting-edge zebrafish models of exocrine pancreas disorders to uncover novel immuno-fibrotic pathways and accelerate the identification of translational targets for early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention.

Ali Rahimpour Jounghani

BioMy long-term research interests lie in advancing our understanding of neuroimaging techniques and their application in mapping developmental pathways of brain networks, with a focus on how alterations in these networks contribute to mental health disorders. My academic training and multidisciplinary research background have provided me with expertise in a range of neuroimaging modalities, including functional MRI (fMRI), structural MRI, electroencephalography (EEG), and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).
During my doctoral studies, I investigated the effects of contextually specific, action-based timing behavior on brain responses, as well as the functional impacts of timing behavior in cochlear implant users. These studies provided valuable insights into the temporal dynamics of brain function. My research has also extended to clinical and cognitive applications, such as studying brain functionality in infants in neonatal intensive care units and in adults with brain disorders.
Currently, as a research scientist at Stanford University, my work bridges psychiatry, cognitive science, and biomedical engineering. I focus on refining neuroimaging data analysis techniques and advancing the use of fNIRS and MRI to explore developmental cognition, particularly for ADHD. A significant part of my current research involves the development of a wearable, cost-effective fNIRS platform for precision mental health. Through my work, I aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of brain disorders and to create practical, cutting-edge tools that advance precision mental health care. -

With a background in vision science, psychophysics and developmental cognitive neuroscience my long-term goal is to study the intersection of basic visual mechanisms and various neurodevelopmental disorders and to extend this understanding in creating effective early screening tools, and in advancing evidence-based therapeutic and remediation programs. Inherent to this interest is the need for developmental data in large and demographically diverse populations. I strongly believe that such inclusive research not only contributes to scientific advancements but can go beyond to bridge health and education disparities.

Asad Gul Rao

BioAs a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, I conduct outcomes research focused on improving the care of children with surgical disorders. My work integrates clinical epidemiology, large-scale healthcare databases, and population-level analyses to study pediatric surgical outcomes, healthcare disparities, and global disease burden.
My research interests include pediatric surgical infections, congenital anomalies, health services research, and evidence-based approaches to optimizing surgical care. I have experience working with multicenter clinical databases and international collaborative research initiatives, with a particular interest in translating real-world data into findings that help clinical practice and healthcare policy.
My long-term goal is to pursue a career in academic pediatric surgery, combining clinical practice with research to improve surgical outcomes and expand access to high-quality care for children worldwide. -

She received her PhD at the University of Maine, Orono in clinical psychology in 2024 and received her bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of Rochester in 2018. Emily has conducted research focusing on adolescent psychosocial behavior and outcomes with a particular emphasis on the role of social media in adolescent friendships. As a clinician, Emily works with children and adolescents with comorbid medical and psychological conditions in several medical clinics through Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford.

Samantha Reyes
Postdoctoral Scholar, Molecular Imaging Program at Stanford
BioResearch Interests: Preclinical and clinical PET imaging, novel tracer validation in vivo, neuroinflammation, proteomics, theranostics and pharmacokinetic modeling
Samantha is an NIH T32 SMIS Postdoctoral Scholar who completed her PhD in Biomedical Physics in Dr. Michelle James' laboratory at Stanford, where her doctoral work focused on the development and translational validation of novel PET radiotracers for non-invasive imaging of neuroinflammation. She led the preclinical development and validation of two GPR84-targeted PET radiotracers for imaging innate immune activation in a murine model of multiple sclerosis, and also led the clinical data analysis for the first whole-body TSPO-PET/MRI study in female patients with ME/CFS. She is well-versed in preclinical and clinical PET quantitation, pharmacokinetic modeling, autoradiography, and cell-based assays. Her postdoctoral research applies her molecular imaging expertise to gynecological cancers, with a focus on using proteomics-driven biomarker discovery and novel theranostic radioligands to characterize the tumor microenvironment and improve response to therapy in women's cancer. -

He earned his dual-title Ph.D. in Food Science and Clinical and Translational Sciences from The Pennsylvania State University under the mentorship of Dr. Edward G. Dudley and Dr. Vivek K. Mutalik, where he studied bacteriophage–host interactions in Escherichia coli O157 using functional genomics to identify the genetic determinants of phage adsorption and host defense. His current research focuses on developing phage–antibiotic therapies for the treatment of polymicrobial bacterial infections associated with cystic fibrosis.

My research explores T cell and myeloid dysregulation in severe dengue to improve vaccines and identify biomarkers. I'm characterizing T cell responses to DENV, and the regulatory immune response through integrative systems analysis. My ultimate goal is to contribute to the development of improved diagnostic tools and vaccines for pediatric infectious diseases, particularly in endemic regions like Brazil.
