Curtis Frank

BioThe properties of ultrathin polymer films are often different from their bulk counterparts. We use spin casting, Langmuir-Blodgett deposition, and surface grafting to fabricate ultrathin films in the range of 100 to 1000 Angstroms thick. Macromolecular amphiphiles are examined at the air-water interface by surface pressure, Brewster angle microscopy, and interfacial shear measurements and on solid substrates by atomic force microscopy, FTIR, and ellipsometry. A vapor-deposition-polymerization process has been developed for covalent grafting of poly(amino acids) from solid substrates. FTIR measurements permit study of secondary structures (right and left-handed alpha helices, parallel and anti-parallel beta sheets) as a function of temperature and environment.
A broadly interdisciplinary collaboration has been established with the Department of Ophthalmology in the Stanford School of Medicine. We have designed and synthesized a fully interpenetrating network of two different hydrogel materials that have properties consistent with application as a substitute for the human cornea: high water swellability up to 85%,tensile strength comparable to the cornea, high glucose permeability comparable to the cornea, and sufficient tear strength to permit suturing. We have developed a technique for surface modification with adhesion peptides that allows binding of collagen and subsequent growth of epithelial cells. Broad questions on the relationships among molecular structure, processing protocol, and biomedical device application are being pursued. -

BioDr. Matthew Frank, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy at Stanford University. Dr. Frank predominantly cares for patients with high-risk lymphoma and other blood cancers. He is a lead investigator of clinical trials evaluating the safety and effectiveness of cancer treatments called chimeric antigen receptor (CAR ) T therapy for patients with lymphomas and leukemias. Dr. Frank’s research focuses on developing methods to identify patients who are at high risk for relapse or developing side-effects after receiving CAR T therapy and to understand why these relapses and side-effects occur.

Michael T. Freehill, MD, FAOA
Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Freehill is a board-certified, double fellowship-trained specialist in orthopaedic surgery with a sub-specialty certification in sports medicine. His concentration is in shoulder and elbow. Dr. Freehill is a team physician for the Stanford University athletics program and head physician for the Stanford University baseball team. Dr. Freehill also teaches in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Freehill’s practice focuses on all shoulder conditions. He treats rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, shoulder arthritis, sports shoulder, arthropathy, complex shoulder pathology, and sports related shoulder injury. In addition, he is also passionate about sports- related elbow injuries, with an emphasis on thrower’s elbow.
Professional and amateur athletes, as well as non-athletes, come to Dr. Freehill for expert care. His sports medicine training and specialization in shoulder replacement procedures enable him to treat patients across the lifespan. Depending on factors including the patient’s condition and occupation, he may recommend treatment ranging from non-operative solutions (such as physical therapy) to cutting-edge biologics procedures or complex surgery.
In addition to his positions within the Stanford University athletics program, Dr. Freehill serves as assistant team physician for the Oakland A’s. Previously, he was a team physician for the Detroit Tigers and the Winston-Salem Dash (affiliated with the Chicago White Sox); he assisted with the Baltimore Orioles. He has also served as Director of Sports Medicine for Wake Forest University Athletics.
As executive director of the Stanford Baseball Science CORE, Dr. Freehill draws on his previous experience as a professional baseball player to help athletes of all skill levels. In the lab, he conducts cutting edge research on the biomechanics of overhead throwers in order to support advances in throwing performance. He has conducted a study on pitch counts in adolescent players funded by Major League Baseball. Dr. Freehill was also awarded a research grant from the National Institutes of Health to investigate stromal vascular fractionated mesenchymal cells and their potential for healing rotator cuff tendon tears.
Dr. Freehill has pioneered the use of some of the latest techniques and technology for leading-edge care. Among the advanced technologies he utilizes is a virtual reality (VR) system that enables him to perform a simulated shoulder arthroplasty procedure prior to entering the operating room with a patient. The system also enables him to predict and order customized implants if needed, which is believed to enable a more positive outcome for patients.
Peer-reviewed articles authored by Dr. Freehill explore rotator cuff injuries, shoulder arthroplasty, baseball-related injuries and performance interests, and more. His work has been featured in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Arthroscopy, and elsewhere. He has written numerous book chapters and made over 200 presentations at conferences around the world.
Dr. Freehill’s honors include an Orthopaedic Residency Research Award while at Johns Hopkins University. He is also a Neer Award winner, denoting the highest research award selected annually by the American Shoulder and Elbow Society.
Currently, he serves on the Medical Publishing Board of Trustees for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He is a member of the American Orthopaedic Association, and the Major League Baseball Team Physician Association. He is a committee member for the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society, International Congress of Arthroscopy and Sports Traumatology, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. -

Heather Freeman

BioHeather Freeman, PsyD, RYT 500, received her PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Pacific University in 2019. She obtained her 200-hour yoga teaching certification at the Asheville Yoga Center in Asheville, NC in 2014, and her 300-hour yoga teaching certification at the DAYA Foundation in Portland, OR. She previously earned a Master's in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University in Baltimore, MD and is currently working towards becoming a licensed psychologist.
Dr. Freeman continues to align her professional interest in psychology with the ancient wisdom and teachings of yoga. She considers herself a gestalt therapist, and views each person as inherently adaptable, resilient and existing within a variety of intertwined contexts. She combines yoga psychology with Gestalt therapy to create a holistic view of the person that draws on and connects mind, body, and spirit. Yoga, like Gestalt, encourages experiential learning in the here-and-now moment to develop and strengthen awareness and innate resources. Her clinical work has involved working with children in a psychiatry hospital, adolescents and college aged students in college counseling centers, as well as working within primary care and community mental health clinics. She has taught yoga to many different populations including graduate students, adults and children receiving mental health services, older adults with chronic health diagnoses, adults in custody and police officers.
Dr. Freeman’s research has specifically targeted identifying the perception of yoga and illuminating the diverse use of yoga philosophy as an entire system. Her dissertation is a program evaluation on the effects of a yoga teacher training program in a prison, evaluating the effects of training adults in custody to build a personal yoga practice and how to teach yoga to other adults in custody. She is passionate about expanding yoga's accessibility through program development, research and clinical work. -

BioNick Friedman is an MD Candidate at the Stanford University School of Medicine. His administrative leadership roles and research focus on innovation in emergency medicine, with emphasis on prehospital emergency care and addiction medicine. Nick was selected for the Stanford Healthcare Leadership and Administration Fellowship in the Department of Emergency Medicine and he is currently the Director of Quality Improvement for the Addiction Treatment Services Innovation Hub at the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He served as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Collegiate Emergency Medical Services, and his research and writing have been published in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine, Prehospital Emergency Care, Prehospital and Disaster Medicine, and others.
Additionally, Nick maintains a special interest in philosophy and ethics. He taught philosophy and ethics of science at the high school level and he is the Founding President of the Stanford Philosophy of Medicine Society.

Andrea Fuentes

BioDr. Fuentes is a board-certified neurologist with the Movement Disorders Center at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences. Dr. Fuentes completed a movement disorders fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.
She provides comprehensive care for patients with different types of movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease (PD), atypical parkinsonian disorders, essential tremor, ataxia, dystonia, and chorea. As part of her clinical practice, she performs deep brain stimulation (DBS) evaluation and programming and botulinum toxin injections.
Her research efforts include several clinical trials assessing treatments for movement disorders. She has been a sub-investigator on multiple trials evaluating drug candidates for the treatment of PD and ataxia. She has presented her work at national and international meetings, including those for the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society and the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Fuentes is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society. -
Janene Fuerch

BioJanene H. Fuerch, MD is a Clinical Associate Professor of Neonatology at Stanford University Medical Center, as well as an innovator, educator, researcher and physician entrepreneur. She has an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience from Brown University and a medical degree from the Jacobs School of Medicine at SUNY Buffalo. At Stanford University she completed a pediatrics residency, neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship and the Byers Center for Biodesign Innovation Fellowship.
She is also Assistant Director of the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship Program at Stanford University, and Co-Director of Impact1 where she mentors and advises new entrepreneurs through all aspects of medical device development, from identifying clinical needs to commercialization. Her specific areas of investigational interest include the development and commercialization process of neonatal, pediatric and maternal health medical devices as well as the utilization of a simulated environment to develop and test medical devices. She is a national leader in neonatal resuscitation, ECMO, device development and has been an AHRQ and FDA funded investigator. But her work extends outside of the academic realm to industry having co-founded EMME (acquired by Simple Health 2022) an award-winning reproductive health company, medical director for Novonate (acquired by Laborie 2023) a neonatal umbilical catheter securement company and notable consultant for Vitara (EXTEND - artificial environment to decrease complications of prematurity), and Avanos™. Janene is passionate about improving the health of children and newborns through medical device innovation and research. -

Dr. Fujinaka completed his Internal Medicine Internship at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. He then Specialized in Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego. Finally, he completed Sub-Specialty training in Pain Medicine at Stanford University. While at Stanford, the Faculty selected him to be Chief of his Fellowship class. He joined as full-time Faculty with Stanford Division of Pain Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology in 2016.

She received her medical education in Tokyo and completed her medical training both in the US and Japan. She joined Stanford in 2015.
Vascular Medicine covers a wide range of vascular disorders including chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis, post thrombotic syndrome, peripheral artery disease, carotid artery disease, cardiovascular risk evaluation, fibromuscular dysplasia, rare vascular disease, lymphedema, arterial/venous/diabetic ulcers, and wound care.
Dr. Fukaya has a special interest in venous disease and started the Stanford Vascular and Vein Clinic in 2016.

BioThe processing of complex liquids (polymers, suspensions, emulsions, biological fluids) alters their microstructure through orientation and deformation of their constitutive elements. In the case of polymeric liquids, it is of interest to obtain in situ measurements of segmental orientation and optical methods have proven to be an excellent means of acquiring this information. Research in our laboratory has resulted in a number of techniques in optical rheometry such as high-speed polarimetry (birefringence and dichroism) and various microscopy methods (fluorescence, phase contrast, and atomic force microscopy).
The microstructure of polymeric and other complex materials also cause them to have interesting physical properties and respond to different flow conditions in unusual manners. In our laboratory, we are equipped with instruments that are able to characterize these materials such as shear rheometer, capillary break up extensional rheometer, and 2D extensional rheometer. Then, the response of these materials to different flow conditions can be visualized and analyzed in detail using high speed imaging devices at up to 2,000 frames per second.
There are numerous processes encountered in nature and industry where the deformation of fluid-fluid interfaces is of central importance. Examples from nature include deformation of the red blood cell in small capillaries, cell division and structure and composition of the tear film. Industrial applications include the processing of emulsions and foams, and the atomization of droplets in ink-jet printing. In our laboratory, fundamental research is in progress to understand the orientation and deformation of monolayers at the molecular level. These experiments employ state of the art optical methods such as polarization modulated dichroism, fluorescence microscopy, and Brewster angle microscopy to obtain in situ measurements of polymer films and small molecule amphiphile monolayers subject to flow. Langmuir troughs are used as the experimental platform so that the thermodynamic state of the monolayers can be systematically controlled. For the first time, well characterized, homogeneous surface flows have been developed, and real time measurements of molecular and microdomain orientation have been obtained. These microstructural experiments are complemented by measurements of the macroscopic, mechanical properties of the films. -

Connie Fung

BioConnie received her B.S. in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics from UCLA, where she conducted research on how the eukaryotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii invades and replicates inside host cells in the lab of Dr. Peter Bradley. Subsequently, she obtained her Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology from Stanford University with Dr. Manuel Amieva. Her thesis research involved the use of high-resolution microscopy to study how the bacterium Helicobacter pylori establishes and maintains persistent colonization of the gastric epithelium. Connie joined Dr. Michael Howitt's lab as a postdoctoral research fellow in 2019 and is currently investigating how tuft cells, specialized taste-chemosensory cells, modulate epithelial cell function and mucosal immunity in response to intestinal parasites and commensals.

Enrica Fung, MD

BioDr. Fung is a board-certified nephrologist with Stanford Health Care’s Kidney Clinic and Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program. She is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Nephrology.
Dr. Fung cares for people with all types of kidney diseases. After completing her nephrology fellowship at Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Fung served as chief of nephrology and led the transplant referral and post-transplant program at Veterans Affairs Loma Linda Healthcare System. Her extensive experience includes working with older adults and veterans with advanced or chronic kidney disease. Dr. Fung’s work reflects a passion for educating and empowering her patients. She integrates their goals of care and other aspects of advanced care planning into treatment planning.
Dr. Fung’s clinical research interests broadly include healthcare delivery and health outcomes in chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Fung is a peer reviewer for several prestigious publications, including Kidney Medicine and the American Heart Journal. She has also been featured on podcasts and health care educational videos. She has presented to her peers at the American Society of Geriatrics, the American Society of Nephrology, and the American College of Physicians, Northern California Chapter. Dr. Fung has also published work in the Merck Manual Professional Edition, the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, and the journal of the International Pediatric Nephrology Association.

Lawrence Fung MD PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Lawrence Fung an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. He is the director of the Stanford Neurodiversity Project, director of the Neurodiversity Clinic, and principal investigator at the Fung Lab. His work, which focuses on autism and neurodiversity, traverses from multi-modal neuroimaging studies to new conceptualization of neurodiversity and its application to clinical, education, and employment settings. His lab advances the understanding of neural bases of human socio-communicative and cognitive functions by using novel neuroimaging and bioanalytical technologies. Using community-based participatory research approach, his team devises and implements novel interventions to improve the lives of neurodiverse individuals by maximizing their potential and productivity. His work has been supported by various agencies including the National Institutes of Health, Autism Speaks, California Department of Developmental Services, California Department of Rehabilitation, as well as philanthropy. He received his PhD in chemical engineering from Cornell University, and MD from George Washington University. BioAdam Furst, JD, MS, is a Biostatistician of the S-SPIRE Center. Adam received his master's degree in biostatistics from the University of California (Davis), and his law degree from the University of Colorado (Boulder). He has served as a biostatistician on various grant-funded studies and clinical trials working with diverse teams including statisticians, doctors, surgeons, radiologists, dosimetrists, epidemiologists and other investigators. He is passionate about collaborative research to advance data and evidence-based practice in medicine and healthcare policy in general.

Staff, Psych/Public Mental Health & Population SciencesBioDr. Furst is a Clinical Associate Professor (affiliated) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a Principal Investigator and Director of the California War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) Advanced Fellowship Post-Doctoral program and Associate Director of Neuroimaging. He is also a Senior Research Scientist at the Polytrauma System of Care (PSC) at VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Dr. Furst serves as Associate Editor for the journal Frontiers in Neurology and is a member of the editorial board of NEUROLOGY. His research focuses on chronic multisymptom illness, traumatic brain injury, sleep, pain and neurodegenerative diseases.
