Seth Andrew Sharp
Postdoctoral Scholar, Endocrinology and Metabolism
BioSeth is a Larry L. Hillblom Postdoctoral Fellow in the Translational Genomics of Diabetes laboratory under Dr. Anna Gloyn with co-mentorship in statistical and population genetics from Dr. Manuel Rivas. Seth completed a B.E. in Applied Mathematics before studying a PhD at the University of Exeter with Drs. Richard Oram and Michael Weedon in which he spent significant time at the Pacific Northwest Research Institute developing new statistical models for polygenic risk scores to predict, screen and understand Type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune disorders with screening expert Dr. William Hagopian. Seth was further seconded to the Alan Turing Institute in London where he used deep learning methods to develop neonatal blood spot polygenic risk screening panels. His postdoctoral studies at Stanford now focus on applying "GWAS-in-a-Dish' and "Polygenic Risk Score to Function (PRS2F)' approaches with rich cellular phenotyping from human donor islets to understand the molecular determinants of impaired insulin secretion in diabetes. He is involved in a number of national human islet research networks and gene-perturbation screen efforts aimed at better understanding diabetes, as well as clinical translation studies at Stanford aimed at improving precision medicine approaches to diabetes.

Sushruta Surappa

BioSushruta Surappa is a postdoctoral researcher at the Canary Center for Early Cancer Detection at Stanford University. His current research focuses on developing various MEMS-based tools for the separation and capture of extracellular vesicles for medical diagnostics. Sushruta received his MS (‘15) and PhD (‘21) degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, where he developed a new class of nonlinear MEMS transducers with applications in wireless power transfer, sensing and energy harvesting. He is passionate about developing low-cost, miniature technologies for medical diagnostics and is a keen proponent of science communication.

To discover mechanistic underpinnings of circuit tuning, the lab has conducted functional screens for genes regulated by neural activity and studied their function for vision, learning and memory.

BioDr. Xiwei She is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Neurology. He received his B.S. degree in Computer Science from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2013, and his M.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering from Zhejiang University in 2016. Worked as a research assistant at the USC Neural Modeling and Interface Laboratory, he received his Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Southern California in 2022. After graduation, he joined Stanford University as a postdoctoral scholar at the Pediatric Neurostimulation Laboratory (Baumer Lab) and Wu Tsai Neuroscience Institute.
His research interests are largely directed toward identifying the causal relationship of neurons/brain regions and understanding how information is encoded in neural signals by employing machine learning models. Specifically, his postdoc research focuses on applying machine learning modeling techniques on EEG and TMS-EEG data to better understand the impact of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) on brain activity in children with childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (CECTS). -
Kevin Shea

BioKevin G. Shea, MD is at Stanford University. He grew up in Montana and California, graduated from the University of Notre Dame, UCLA School of Medicine, and completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Utah. His advanced training includes pediatric orthopaedics at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, AO Fellowship in Bern Switzerland with Dr. Ganz (Hip), Dr. Diego Fernandez (Trauma), and Dr. Hans Staubli (sports), Ilizarov Training in Lecco, Italy. He has done the AOSSM South American Traveling Sports Medicine Fellowship, and education in Russia and former Soviet Bloc countries. Most of his early career was in Boise, Idaho. Dr. Shea is a founding member of the PRISM Society (Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine) and the ROCK (Research in Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Knee) Multi-center Study Group, and the SCORE (Sports Cohort Outcomes Research ) Multi-Center Registry for pediatric sports. He has authored more than 270 scientific papers and chapters. His clinic research interests include cartilage and ligament disorders, using pediatric cadaveric tissue and surgical 3D simulations to develop surgeries and improve outcomes for procedures that avoid damage to growth plates. He has years of experience with performance, quality improvement, value, and he worked extensively with the AAOS Quality/Clinical Practice Guideline Committees. He is one of the POSNA members to launch the POSNA Safe Surgery Program. He is a national quality leader in health care with interests in patient safety, risk reduction, and improving value in health care with clinician integration into supply chain. He is an avid cyclist, trail runner, hiker, and spends as much time outside as possible, with his partner Lonnie and their children Beck and Cooper.

Clifford Sheckter, MD, MS, FACS
Assistant Professor of Surgery (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)
BioDr. Cliff Sheckter is a California native, growing up in the rural Eastern Sierra. He graduated from UCLA with a BS in Anthropology and earned summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors. He attended USC (Keck) for medical school on an academic scholarship and graduated valedictorian with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He fell in love with burn care while at USC/LA General Medical Center and completed surgical training at Stanford. While in residency, he pursued a fellowship/postdoc in Health Systems Design at Stanford’s Clinical Excellence Research Center (CERC). He earned an MS in Health Policy from Stanford, focusing on health economics. He received additional training in Surgical Critical Care and Burn Surgery at the University of Washington.
Dr. Sheckter is a health services and health policy researcher. His work focuses on burn prevention, health economics in surgical care, and health equity outcomes in burn care. He has authored over 130 articles and numerous book chapters. His research has been published in JAMA, JAMA Network Open, JAMA Surgery, Annals of Surgery, Journal of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Burns, and Journal of Burn Care & Research. His work has been featured in USA Today and the New York Times. He was the recipient of a career development award from the NIH and has funding from the Plastic Surgery Foundation. Dr. Sheckter was awarded the American Burn Association (ABA) Traveling Fellow for 2023 and has won top abstract at the ABA Annual Meeting multiple times. He is an active member of the ABA Burn Prevention and Research Committees.
Dr. Sheckter is one of a few surgeons double-board certified in Surgical Critical Care and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. He practices critical care medicine as an intensivist in the Stanford Surgical ICU. He is the Director of the Regional Burn Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center which is the only burn/trauma center for the San Francisco Bay Area. He performs scar reconstruction using surgical and laser techniques. -
Edward Sheen

BioDr. Edward Sheen is Chief Quality and Population Health Executive for L.A. Care. Serving more than 2.9 million members, L.A. Care is the largest publicly operated health plan in the country. As a public entity, its mission is to provide access to quality care for vulnerable and low-income communities and to elevate the safety net. Previously, he was Chief Population Health Officer, Senior Vice President for Health Catalyst and Chief Medical Officer, Market Development and Solution Design for Lumeris, a leading value-based care technology and services operator as well as 5.0 Star Medicare Advantage plan. He has worked with health systems and payers across the country to improve health outcomes, enhance patient experience, strengthen care provider engagement, reduce costs of care, and accelerate their journey towards accountable care. He is dedicated to achieving accessible, equitable, person-centered, and high-performing care for all.
Dr. Sheen’s experience has bridged the public, private, non-profit, and academic sectors and additionally includes work with Stanford University, the White House, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, California State Assembly, Kaiser Family Foundation, Blue Shield, California and American Medical Associations, and Genzyme. In 2014, he was one of 15 Americans appointed by President Obama a nonpartisan White House Fellow. He subsequently served as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense and Defense Department senior health policy advisor and was a recipient of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service. Dr. Sheen was a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He currently serves on the National Advisory Council on the National Health Service Corps, which advises the Secretary of Health and Human Services. He is Adjunct Professor of Medicine and Global Health Faculty Fellow at Stanford. He has a long-standing active commitment to mentoring, teaching, and medical education.
Dr. Sheen completed his Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology training at Stanford, received his MD from the University of California, San Francisco, and earned his MBA and MPH through scholarships from Stanford Graduate School of Business and Harvard School of Public Health, where he was also a Harvard Kennedy School Center for Public Leadership Zuckerman Fellow. He graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a B.A. in Public Policy and induction into Phi Beta Kappa. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research focuses on studying phenomenology, vulnerability factors, and psychiatric and medical comorbidity of panic disorder in old age, as well as treatment responses to medication in elders with panic disorder. I am presently involved in establishing and extending our preliminary finding that Late-Onset Panic Disorder (LOPD) (onset at or after age 55) is a phenomenologically distinct syndrome from Early-Onset Panic Disorder (EOPD).

BioDr. Shem is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Section of Dental Medicine and Surgery at Stanford University. He trained in Dental Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, focusing on oral complications of cancer therapy and non-surgical management of patients with osteoradionecrosis (ORN) and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). He also trained in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Columbia University and has expertise in diagnosing and managing oral mucosal diseases.
A hospital dentist and dental oncologist, he evaluates patients before and after organ and stem-cell transplant, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and bisphosphonate therapy, and performs medically necessary dental treatment. -

Chris is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Stanford University, responsible for teaching and mentoring international and Stanford-based faculty and students in medical technology innovation.
Dr. Shen is also a Managing Director at CBC Group, one of the largest Asia-based, healthcare investment firms. With headquarters in Singapore, CBC is committed to building innovative companies that improve the health and quality of human life. Chris has over 20 years of experience in medical device design and innovation, and is focused on investments in the biopharma and medtech sectors. Previously, Chris held senior investing positions at Qiming Venture Partners, Vertex Healthcare/Temasek, EW Health, and New Enterprise Associates. Chris started his medtech career as a Senior Design Engineer at Guidant Neurovascular, where he was the principal inventor on one of the earliest stentriever devices for ischemic stroke.
Chris received his Doctor of Medicine from the Stanford School of Medicine, his Master of Business Administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a Master of Biomechanical Engineering from the Stanford School of Engineering. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Stanford University.
Dr. Shen teaches the Global Biodesign course: Global Biodesign: Medical Technology in an International Context – a project-based course that exposes students to the challenges and opportunities of developing and implementing innovative medical technologies to help patients around the world. He has authored twelve patents in the fields of interventional neuroradiology and interventional cardiology.
