Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy overall research goal is to advance clinical practice by providing anesthesiologists with data to most effectively maintain cerebral blood flow in the perioperative period.
I am interested in the effect of the autonomic nervous system on cerebral blood flow regulation.
I intend to combine regional anesthetic techniques and noninvasive bedside cerebral blood flow monitoring to understand the effect of the sympathetic system on cerebral blood flow.
A secondary goal is to apply this new knowledge to investigate whether cervical sympathetic blocks improve long term neurological outcomes. -
Alexandra Bor, MD

BioDr. Alexandra Bor is a board-certified, fellowship-trained anesthesiologist with Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Bor specializes in anesthesia and pain management, with an emphasis on pediatric anesthesiology.
Her research focuses on improving surgical techniques and patient experience during procedures.
Dr. Bor has published her research in several peer-reviewed journals, including Anesthesia & Analgesia, Canadian Journal of Urology, Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, and Urology. She has also contributed chapters to “Anesthesiologist's Manual of Surgical Procedures” and presented to her peers at national meetings.

Amber Noelle Borucki

BioDr. Amber Borucki is an anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist whose focus is chronic pain management in children and adolescents/young adults. She focuses on reducing or managing pain from chronic conditions or pain that occurs after surgery. Dr. Borucki completed her medical degree at Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL. She attended anesthesia residency at the University of Chicago. She completed a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Boston Children's Hospital as well as a combined adult/pediatric pain medicine fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital, Brigham Women's Hospital, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Borucki worked for one year in private practice in anesthesiology in Reno, Nevada. Dr. Borucki then worked for 5 years as a pediatric anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist and was the Director of the Pediatric Anesthesia Service at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. Dr. Borucki transitioned to Stanford Medicine Children's Health in May 2023 and her clinical duties include working in the Emeryville satellite pediatric pain clinic, pediatric operating room, and pediatric pain inpatient service. Dr. Borucki is currently the Director for Pediatric Pain Education at Stanford.
Notable accomplishments include developing and co-chairing the UCSF Benioff Transbay Pediatric Pain Management Committee, development of the pediatric establishment of an adolescent/young adult transitional pain clinic, and serving on the Bridge to One Bay project to standardize pain care across all UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital locations. Dr. Borucki also was instrumental in helping UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital obtain ChildKind designation, a prestigious designation for a hospital indicating that it prioritizes pediatric pain care.
Dr. Borucki is a member of the medical advisory council for the Make a Wish Bay Area chapter. She is currently serving as the Secetary/Treasurer for the Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine (SPPM) and also served as the program director for the 12th annual SPPM meeting. Dr. Borucki has also served on several committees through the American Society of Anesthesiologists and California Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Borucki served as an editorial board member for Paediatric and Neonatal Pain. -

Alyssa Burgart (she/her)

BioDr. Alyssa Burgart is a unique figure in the fields of pediatric anesthesiology and bioethics, with double board certification in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology and over 20 years of experience in bioethics. Her role as a clinical associate professor at Stanford University in Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine, and by courtesy in Pediatrics, underscores her interdisciplinary approach. This is further evidenced by her affiliation with the Stanford Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in the School of Humanities and Sciences.
Dr. Burgart holds numerous leadership positions, including Associate Director of Pediatric Bioethics at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics, Medical Director of Ethics for the Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, and physician co-chair of the Stanford Children’s Ethics Committee. She actively supports the Program in Medical Humanities and the Arts and is the Associate Director for Symposium. In the undergraduate school, she teaches a course called One in Five: The Law, Politics, and Policy of Campus Sexual Assault.
Dr. Burgart is an expert in difficult conversations and skillfully mediating complex choices with families and healthcare providers. She speaks nationally on bioethics, relationship-centered care, trauma-informed care, disability justice, gender equity, and reproductive justice issues.
Dr. Burgart's dedication to pediatric trauma mitigation is unwavering. She is committed to finding the most successful way for each child to interact with the anesthesia team, ensuring an overall positive experience and reducing the risk of medical trauma. She advocates specifically for children with unique needs, such as those with unique sensory integration needs. Her clinical focus within pediatric anesthesiology is on abdominal transplant anesthesiology, specifically on children weighing less than 10 kilograms (22 lbs).
Her current research projects are grounded in the just delivery of care: pediatric justice (especially pediatric algorithmic bias), mitigating moral distress and moral injury, reproductive care access (including anesthesiologists as barriers to access), and workplace violence prevention.
Dr. Burgart's influence in the field of bioethics extends beyond her clinical and academic roles. As an associate editor and digital media editor at the American Journal of Bioethics, her work is instrumental in shaping the discourse on ethical healthcare practices. Her writing, featured in JAMA, The Washington Post, USA Today, Slate, and Ms. Magazine, and her newsletter, Poppies & Propofol, are all part of her mission to enhance public education on bioethics issues in the news. She frequently engages with journalists to ensure accurate and comprehensive reporting on complex medical ethics issues. -

Austen Brooks Casey

BioAusten Brooks Casey, PhD, is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine (advisor: Boris Dov Heifets, MD, PhD). He originates from western North Carolina, and has had a long-standing interest in drug discovery for major depression and schizophrenia, which was invigorated by initial coursework in organic chemistry and biochemistry. Austen trained at Northeastern University (advisor: Raymond G. Booth, PhD) where he studied the medicinal chemistry and pharmacology of novel ligands targeting serotonergic G protein-coupled receptors. Currently, he is investigating neural circuits activated by psychedelic drugs, with the long-term goal of using modern techniques in neuroscience to complement drug design efforts toward the development of novel antidepressant and antipsychotic medications.

BioMichael W. Chen, MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Stanford University. He serves as an Associate Medical Director of the Medical-Surgical ICU and is also the Director of Adult Liver Transplant Anesthesiology. His clinical and academic interests center on perioperative management of complex abdominal transplantation, pheochromocytomas, non-OR anesthesia (NORA), and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). His other professional interests include quality improvement, teaching, and performing anesthesia for Great Apes.

QiLiang “Q” Chen

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research focuses on understanding the plasticity in pain-modulating circuits in pathological pain states. I started with defining a basic functional framework that links the pain-transmission system to the pain-modulation system, through which I explored the central mechanism of sensitization in chronic pain after a peripheral injury. Based on this fundamental observation, my work now focuses on investigating the pathophysiology and the role of endogenous opioids in chronic pain related to brain injury and other forms of trauma, a topic especially relevant to chronic post-traumatic pain sufferers. Clinically, I am exploring the use of advance image-guidance in pain interventions for treating complex headache and craniofacial pain. Ultimately, I hope to translate these fundamental knowledge and technologies to patient care and provide potential new therapeutic targets to help those with pain after head injury and polytrauma.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI have two lines of research, one involving educational informatics and use of technology in postgraduate medical education and another involving NIH-funded work in patient-oriented clinical research regarding opioid use and physiologic responses associated with acute and chronic exposure in humans.

My clinical research focuses on the study opiate-induced hyperalgesia in patients suffering from chronic pain.
I am currently conducting an NIH-funded five year double-blinded randomized controlled clinical study (NIGMS award 1K23GM071400-01) that prospectively examines the following hypotheses: 1) pain patients on chronic opioid therapy develop dose-dependent tolerance and/or hyperalgesia to these medications over time, 2) opiate-induced tolerance and hyperalgesia develop differently with respect to various types of pain, 3) opioid-induced hyperalgesia occurs independently of withdrawal phenomena, and 4) opiate-induced tolerance and hyperalgesia develop differently based on gender and/or ethnicity.
The study is the first quantitative and prospective examination of tolerance and hyperalgesia in pain patients and may have important implications for the rational use of opioids in the treatment of chronic pain.
