Her clinical and research interests include expanding psychiatry support for pediatric palliative care patients. Her academic interests include curriculum development and medical education for trainees and clinicians at all levels. She is a facilitator for both VitalTalk and EPEC (Education in Palliative and End-of-Life Care) programs nationally and internationally. Prior to coming to Stanford, she was an assistant professor at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital and Northwestern University where she served as program director for the pediatric and perinatal palliative care fellowship tracks, and most recently she was an assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Allison Vreeland

BioDr. Allison Vreeland (she/her) is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in working with children, teens, and families. Dr. Vreeland received her PhD in Clinical Psychological Science with a minor in Quantitative Studies at Vanderbilt University. She completed her predoctoral clinical internship in Child Psychology at UCSF with specialty training through the Child Trauma Research Program. She completed a research and clinical fellowship in the Immune Behavioral Health Clinic at Stanford University, where she focused her research efforts on examining neurological markers of patients diagnosed with pediatric acute neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS). Clinically, Dr. Vreeland’s program of clinical care is focused on the delivery of evidence-based clinical interventions for individuals with anxiety, OCD, PANS/PANDAS, mood disorders, and behavioral challenges.

Masataka Wada
Postdoctoral Scholar, Psychiatry
BioDr. Masataka (he/him/his) is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a board-certified psychiatrist and holds a PhD in neuroscience.
His clinical and research interests center on psychiatric disorders in treatment-resistant conditions. To address these challenges, Dr. Masataka is engaged in exploring electrophysiological, neuroimaging, and neuromodulation techniques, including repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). He spearheaded a significant Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) that involved 180 patients with treatment-resistant depression, aiming to develop an innovative rTMS-based treatment. His efforts have led to him receiving awards at international conferences on three occasions for his significant contributions.
Dr. Masataka's scholarly work includes publications on the electrophysiological characteristics of psychiatric disorders and the effects of neuromodulation on clinical symptoms and neuroimaging features. Additionally, he has been the recipient of two scholarships and three grants, further highlighting his contributions to the field. -
Lynn C. Waelde, Ph.D.
Adjunct Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioLynn C. Waelde, Ph.D. is an Adjunct Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine and Professor Emeritus in the Psychology Department at Palo Alto University. Dr. Waelde’s many collaborative publications address the impacts of traumatic events and ways to use mindfulness and meditation to promote resilience and recovery from stress and trauma. She founded and directed the Inner Resources Center which offered intervention groups and trainings to thousands of participants, clients, and therapists over the past 15 years. Dr. Waelde is the author of Mindfulness and Meditation in Trauma Treatment: The Inner Resources for Stress Program, published in 2022. She has taken a special interest in family caregivers and the Inner Resources for Stress program has been named a Best Practice by the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging. She recently coauthored Family Caregiver Distress, which is forthcoming in 2023. She is on the editorial board of Journal of Traumatic Stress and an Associate Editor of Mindfulness.

Gordon Wang
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioGordon Wang received his Bachelors of Arts and Science from the University of California, Davis in 2000 majoring in Comparative literature and Genetics. He received his PhD under Dr. Mu-ming Poo at the University of California, Berkeley in 2005 studying the role of ion channels in mediating neuronal growthcone guidance decisions. As a postdoctoral scholar in the lab of Dr. Stephen Smith at Stanford University, Gordon developed a computational architecture for the detailed study of molecular diversity in synapses and using this system, he studied the diverse role of synaptic diversity in neurodevelopmental diseases, such as fragile x syndrome. In a co-postdoc in Dr. Philippe Mourrain's lab, he studied the dynamic plasticity of synapses in sleep and circadian cycles in larval zebrafish using multi-photon microscopy. The Wang lab focuses on developing imaging tools to deeply analyze proteins, mRNA and lipids at the synapses, and understand how synaptic heterogeneity affect the function of neural circuits throughout development and aging and in diseases such as autism and fragile x syndrome.

Kathleen Watson
Instructor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioKathleen Watson, Ph.D., currently serves as an instructor at Stanford University School of Medicine, specializing in Epidemiology and Clinical Research. She co-founded Microclinic International in 2007, where she served as Chief Operating Officer until 2012, focusing on socially-based health interventions for underserved communities.
Dr. Watson's research encompasses various aspects of mental health and metabolism. She investigates the connection between insulin resistance and depression, using computational psychiatry to uncover insights into the interplay of metabolic factors in mental well-being. Additionally, her exploration of cognitive aging examines how metabolic alterations might impact cognitive decline and related disorders. Furthermore, her research in proteomics aims to identify potential biomarkers for severe major depressive disorder. Dr. Watson has recently become a part of the Stanford Autism Center for Excellence Data Core, where she works under the guidance of Dr. Booil Jo. -
Aileen Whyte, PhD

BioDr. Aileen Whyte, a licensed psychologist in California, brings over two decades of specialized expertise to the treatment of eating disorders in young people. Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Whyte actively works on implementing strategies to expand the reach of evidence-based treatments for eating disorders, aiming to make these best-practice interventions more accessible to a wider population.
Dr Whyte serves as the Director of the Stanford Outpatient Child & Adolescent Eating Disorders Clinic, where she provides treatment to young people with eating disorders and provides supervision to psychology and psychiatry fellows. Dr Whyte is a certified practitioner and consultant in Family-Based Treatment (FBT) for eating disorders. She serves as a study therapist in NIMH-sponsored randomized clinical trials focused on examining FBT and related adaptations.
In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Whyte has led multiple seminars, workshops, and training sessions dedicated to the treatment of eating disorders. She provides ongoing training and consultation in FBT, reaching diverse audiences, including multidisciplinary clinicians, psychologists, and psychiatrists, within the US and internationally.
Dr. Whyte earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the New School for Social Research in New York. Her research and clinical interests converge on the implementation and dissemination of evidence-based treatments for eating disorders. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsA revolution is under way in psychiatry. We can now understand mental illness as an expression of underlying brain circuit disruptions, shaped by experience and genetics. Our lab is defining precision brain circuit biotypes for depression, anxiety and related disorders. We integrate large amounts of brain imaging, behavioral and clinical data and computational approaches. Biotypes are used in personalized intervention studies with selective drugs, neuromodulation and exploratory therapeutics.

Nolan Williams

BioNolan Williams, M.D. is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and Director of the Stanford Brain Stimulation Lab. The long-term goals of his research program are to develop innovative technologies and therapeutics capable of modulating the neural circuitry disrupted in mood disorders, OCD, and other neuropsychiatric conditions. His team has been developing neuroimaging-based approaches to precisely target therapeutic delivery and predict treatment responses to therapeutic neuromodulation and psychedelics. Dr. Williams earned his M.D. and completed his dual residencies in neurology and psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Triple board-certified in general neurology, general psychiatry, as well as behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry, Dr. Williams brings a comprehensive background in clinical neuroscience to his role as a clinically active neuropsychiatrist. His expertise extends to the development and implementation of novel therapeutics, including devices and novel compounds, for central nervous system illnesses.
Over the past decade, Dr. Williams’ laboratory alongside collaborators at Stanford University have pioneered multiple novel therapeutic and human neuroscience approaches. Notably, Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy (SAINT) is the world's first non-invasive, rapid-acting neuromodulation approach for treatment-resistant depression. SAINT received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation Status (2021) and FDA Clearance (2022) and is the first psychiatric treatment to be covered by Medicare New Technology Add-On Payment (NTAP). As of April 2024, SAINT has been reimbursed for patients suffering from severe depression within inpatient psychiatric units. The SAINT technology is being deployed both clinically and in research protocols in laboratories and hospitals worldwide. Dr. Williams also has an expertise in psychedelic medicines for neuropsychiatric illness and is the first investigator to conduct mechanistic clinical trials exploring the neurobiological effects of ibogaine.
His research accomplishments have garnered international recognition, earning prestigious awards from the Pritzker Neuropsychiatric Disorders Consortium, One Mind Institute, Wellcome Leap Foundation, International Brain Stimulation Conference, National Institute of Mental Health (Biobehavioral Research Award for Innovative New Scientists), Society of Biological Psychiatry (A. E. Bennett Award), along with multiple awards from the Brain Behavior Research Foundation (most notably the Gerald L. Klerman Award and Colvin Prize). His work has been featured in Scientific American, The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, CBS Sunday Morning, and the TODAY Show. -
Sharon E. Williams PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Williams work focuses primarily on cognitive and emotional recovery of children who have been medically compromised. With improved medical treatment and increased survival rates comes the need to better understand the challenges that patients face following a life threatening illness or injury. Dr. Williams utilizes neuropsychological assessments to understand the cognitive abilities of children who have been diagnosed with cancer, head injuries, genetic disorders and other medical conditions.

Helen Wilson

BioDr. Wilson is a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise in the areas of trauma and life stress, women's wellness and sexual dysfunction, and lifestyle psychiatry. She provides clinical services in these areas and is Co-Director of the Lifestyle Psychiatry Clinic focused on holistic interventions incorporating physical activity, nutrition, stress management, sleep, social connection, and avoidance of risk substances. She has is also a 500 hour certified yoga instructor as has developed a group therapy program that integrates principles of yoga to support management of mood and anxiety symptoms. Dr. Wilson has completed federally funded research focused on relationships between childhood trauma and health risk behavior in adolescence and adulthood and is currently engaged in clinical research. Dr. Wilson has authored or co-authored over thirty journal articles and book chapters related to these topics, and she regularly presents her work at local and national conferences. She is lead editor of the 2023 book Facing Campus Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence With Courage: A Guide for Institutions and Clinicians on Prevention, Support, and Healing. She is currently engaged in a collaboration with Stanford Recreation and Wellness to evaluate the benefits of physical wellness and outdoor education courses.

Helen J. Wood

BioDr. Helen Wood (she/her) is a clinical psychologist licensed in Vermont and Pennsylvania. She works for INSPIRE training and is also a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Vermont, Department of Psychological Science. Dr. Wood was previously the psychologist for outpatient psychosis services, including a first-episode psychosis service, at an academic medical center in southwest Pennsylvania, where she led CBTp implementation. She has worked as program director for an adult psychosis inpatient unit, as well as in outpatient services in the US and in the UK’s National Health Service. She co-chairs the North American CBTp Network’s early psychosis working group. Dr. Wood values collaboration with people bringing lived experience knowledge to clinical, training, and research contexts. Dr. Wood’s clinical and research interests focus on understanding the experience of psychosis and improving services and/or other forms of support. Dr. Wood has a BA Hons in History, Theology and Religious Studies from the University of Cambridge, an MSc in Experimental Psychology from the University of Sussex, and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Canterbury Christ Church University, all in the UK.

Britt Wray

BioDr. Wray is the Director of CIRCLE at Stanford Psychiatry, a research and action initiative focused on Community-minded Interventions for Resilience, Climate Leadership and Emotional wellbeing in the Stanford School of Medicine. Her research focuses on the mental health impacts of climate change on young people ('emerging adults') and frontline community members, community-minded psychosocial support interventions, and public engagement for improved mental and planetary health. Wray focuses on co-designing and evaluating evidence-based climate distress (climate anxiety/eco-anxiety) interventions with impacted communities and international networks of Integrated Youth Services using a health equity lens, and brings expertise in conceptual models of climate distress, different measurement modalities for climate impact exposures on mental health, community-engaged research, and co-design methods. Previously, Wray was a Human and Planetary Health Postdoctoral Fellow at the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She is the author of two books; her latest Generation Dread: Finding Purpose in an Age of Climate Anxiety, is an impassioned generational perspective on how to stay sane amid climate disruption and was a finalist for the 2022 Governor General’s Award. She is the recipient of the 2025 American Climate Leadership Awards (Runner Up), 2023 Canadian Eco-Hero Award and top award winner of the National Academies Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications, given by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Her first book is Rise of the Necrofauna: The Science, Ethics and Risks of De-Extinction (Greystone Books 2017) and was named a "best book of the year" by The New Yorker. Dr Wray holds a PhD in Science Communication from the University of Copenhagen. She has hosted and produced several science radio programs, podcasts and television programs for international broadcasters including the BBC and CBC, and she has spoken at TED and the World Economic Forum. She is the Founder of Unthinkable (unthinkable.substack.com), a newsletter about building courage and taking meaningful action on the far side of climate grief.

Yishan Xu, PhD, DBSM, CST

BioDr. Xu is a licensed clinical psychologist in California, a Board-certified Behavioral Sleep Medicine Specialist, and AASECT Board-Certified Sex Therapist. She currently serves as the chair of the OPEC committee for the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine. She completed training at the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center 2017-2019. She has specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias, nightmares, and adjustment to PAP therapy for sleep apnea.
Dr. Xu grew up in China and received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Virginia, VA. She has adapted treatment for insomnia for the Chinese population, and translated the book “The Rested Child” into Chinese, which is the first evidence-based book about children and teen’s sleep disorders in China. She is the founder and director of a multicultural group practice in the SF Bay Area: Mind & Body Garden Psychology Inc. She also hosts a podcast "Deep into Sleep" to help bridge the gap between public awareness and knowledge of sleep problems and the science of sleep medicine.

Audrey Yoon, DDS
Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Sleep Medicine
BioDr. Yoon is a double board-certified sleep specialist with the Stanford Health Care Sleep Medicine Center. She is currently a Clinical Professor in the Division of Sleep Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.
She uses her extensive orthodontic experience to diagnose and treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children and adults. Dr. Yoon specializes in surgical and non-surgical OSA treatments, such as miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE), distraction osteogenesis maxillary expansion (DOME), and maxillomandibular advancement (MMA). These procedures restructure the palate, nasal airway, or jaw to improve airflow.
Her research interests include modifying head and face growth to improve sleep-disordered breathing in children and creating customized appliances that help reshape bones in the mouth, jaw, and face over time. She has also studied genetic anatomical factors related to OSA. Dr. Yoon worked with Stanford Medicine researchers to develop a new DOME technique, and she established and proposed a surgery-first approach protocol for MMA. With this approach, doctors surgically reposition the jaw before starting orthodontic treatment. The surgery-first approach can reduce the amount of time patients need to undergo orthodontic treatment.
Dr. Yoon has published in many peer-reviewed journals, including Sleep, Sleep Medicine, the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and she has written numerous book chapters. She has presented to her colleagues all over the nation and the world, including those in Germany, Italy, Australia, Chile, Singapore and China. Her presentations have covered a range of topics, such as the latest techniques in craniofacial (head and face) growth modification.
Dr. Yoon is a founding co-president of the World Dentofacial Sleep Society. She established a dental sleep medicine specialty clinic in the Division of Sleep Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. She also established the Dental Sleep Medicine Clinic at the University of the Pacific and is currently a program director of the Pacific Ortho-Dental Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. Yoon also serves on the board of directors for the California Sleep Society, Angle Orthodontists, and the Korean Association of Dental Sleep Medicine.
She is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. -
Jong H. Yoon

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research seeks to discover the brain mechanisms responsible for schizophrenia and to translate this knowledge into the clinic to improve how we diagnose and treat this condition. Towards these ends, our group has been developing cutting-edge neuroimaging tools to identify neurobiological abnormalities and test novel systems-level disease models of psychosis and schizophrenia directly in individuals with these conditions.
We have been particularly interested in the role of neocortical-basal ganglia circuit dysfunction. A working hypothesis is that some of the core symptoms of schizophrenia are attributable to impairments in neocortical function that results in disconnectivity with components of the basal ganglia and dysregulation of their activity. The Yoon Lab has developed new high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging methods to more precisely measure the function of basal ganglia components, which given their small size and location deep within the brain has been challenging. This includes ways to measure the activity of nuclei that store and control the release of dopamine throughout the brain, a neurochemical that is one of the most important factors in the production of psychosis in schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric conditions. -
Isabella Young

BioIsabella “Bella” Young is a Clinical Psychology doctoral student in the PAU–Stanford Consortium, expected to graduate in 2030. She holds dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Psychology and Criminology, with minors in Sociology and Political Science, from the University of Utah, and earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Bella is committed to integrating empirical research with evidence-based treatment, believing this combination creates the most effective approaches to care. She is a proud alumna of the Perinatal Research on Intergenerational Solutions for Equity (RISE) Laboratory, where she contributed to the Nurse-Family Partnership and Mozambique studies, examining how social inequities become biologically embedded across generations through DNA methylation. She also partnered with Manhattan-based organizations advancing Birthing Justice.
Currently, she continues her work in Columbia’s Maternal & Reproductive Psych Laboratory, where she helped launch a Reproductive Identity study and served as first author on a reproductive identity narrative.
Her research interests focus on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, reproductive identity, and severe personality pathology in mothers (e.g., borderline personality disorder, postpartum psychosis). Ultimately, Bella aspires to become a clinical psychologist dedicated to bridging research and clinical practice to better support individuals during the perinatal period. -

BioDr. Kin Yuen is a board-certified physician in sleep medicine, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. She is an associate physician diplomate at University of California at San Francisco, and adjunct faculty member at Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Services. Before her fellowship in Sleep Medicine, she practiced internal medicine at the Stanford Medical Group. She then spent two years in clinical sleep medicine research at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Center concurrent with acquiring her Masters of Science degree from Stanford University in Health Policy/Health Services Research. She was a current member of Public Safety Committee of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
She is also an advisory member to the Continuing Medical Education Committee of School of Sleep Medicine in Palo Alto. Dr. Yuen has been a principal investigator in clinical research of cardiac arrhythmia, medical devices, and has co-authored articles in health economic evaluations, women and sleep disorders. -
Sanno Zack
Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Zack is involved with ongoing research related to the treatment of adolescent and adult trauma (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - TF-CBT; Prolonged Exposure - PE), and the effective provision of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to adolescent girls and women with disorder of emotion regulation. She additionally studies Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for adolescent girls with anxiety. More broadly she is interested in the impact of Evidenced Based Treatments on improving quality of life, and helping individuals find the right match for clinical care. Research is conducted through the Early Life Stress and Pediatric Anxiety Disorders Program at Stanford Children's Hospital and the Stanford Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program.

Natalie M. Zahr
Assistant Professor (Research) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Major Laboratories)
BioNatalie M. Zahr received a graduate education in the basic sciences including the study of neuro- pharmacology, physiology, and anatomy. After completing her graduate training in electrophysiology, she began a postdoctoral fellowship as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scientist. Her work focuses on translational approaches using in vivo MR imaging and spectroscopy in studies of human with Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD) and in rodent models of alcohol exposure with the goal of identifying mechanisms of alcohol effects on the brain. Her human studies include participants with HIV, those co-morbid for HIV and AUD and recently, aging individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Her position allows her to explore emerging MR technologies and apply them to test relevant hypotheses. Before joining Stanford, she taught at several local institutions including UC Berkeley extension and Santa Clara University where she enjoyed sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for learning with students.

Mira Zein
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Medical Psychiatry
Clinical Associate Professor (By courtesy), Medicine - Primary Care and Population HealthBioDr. Zein received her dual bachelor’s degrees in Anthropology and Physiological Science at UCLA and worked initially as a healthcare consultant, developing programs that improve healthcare access for vulnerable populations. She returned to school to pursue a Masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University; her research foci were disaster response interventions for physical and mental health and the impact of the built environment on public health. During her masters, she worked with the International Rescue Committee in Baltimore to help address the acculturation and psychological stress the Baltimore refugee population faced in resettlement.
Dr. Zein completed her medical training at McGill University. During medical school she continue to pursue interests in global and cultural health, focusing on national and local clinical projects to support refugee and asylum seeker access to medical and mental health treatment as part of CFMS. She was awarded the Mona Bronfman Sheckman Prize in Psychiatry for her work. During her psychiatry residency training at New York University (NYU), Dr. Zein continued pursuing her interest in global mental health, working as a group leader for refugees/asylum seekers in the Bellevue Survivors of Torture program, and the Association for Culture and Psychiatry.
She also became interested in models of Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) to provide better access to mental health services within primary care and other settings. She founded the Integrated Behavioral Health resident working group and designed a two-year resident training program in the Collaborative Care Model, and developed a Collaborative Care model in one of NYU Langone-Brooklyn's FQHC sites. She completed residency as a chief resident and won awards for Excellence in Resident Teaching as well as for humanism and clinical excellence in the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program
Dr. Zein completed her Consult Liaison Fellowship at Stanford and has remained as clinical faculty. She previously currently served as an attending psychiatrist on the General, Intensive Care, and ED-Psychiatry Consult service. She currently works as the Psychiatric Director for Integrated Behavioral Health. She initially the model for the Stanford Primary Care Clinic serving Cisco employees and their families. She is currently working on expanding Integrated Behavioral health to other Stanford Primary Care Clinics, and has worked with Stanford's Digital Health Team to start and expand psychiatry e-consults for primary care. She also works as the Behavioral Health Director for Cisco, applying principles of organizational psychiatry and public health to assess company behavioral health strategy and provide support for Cisco employees and their families. Additionally, Dr Zein is part of the Stanford Mental Health lab where she supervises and completes evaluations for refugee and asylum seekers, and teaches Neuroscience and Psychopharmacology for the Psychiatry Residents -
Jamie Zeitzer

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Zeitzer is a circadian physiologist specializing in the understanding of the impact of light on circadian rhythms and other aspects of non-image forming light perception.
He examines the manner in which humans respond to light and ways to manipulate this responsiveness, with direct application to jet lag, shift work, and altered sleep timing in teens. Dr. Zeitzer has also pioneered the use of actigraphy in the determination of epiphenomenal markers of psychiatric disorders. -
Yu Zhang
Assistant Professor (Research) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Public Mental Health and Population Sciences)
BioDr. Yu Zhang's research operates at the intersection of AI, translational neuroscience, and precision medicine. His work focuses on unraveling the complex neurobiological mechanisms underlying cognitive deficits, behavioral dysfunctions, and therapeutic responses in mental health disorders. By integrating advanced machine learning techniques with multimodal brain imaging modalities (e.g., fMRI, DTI, EEG), Dr. Zhang aims to identify neural signatures that reveal the heterogeneity of mental disorders across individuals. A central goal of his research is the development and validation of robust neurobiomarkers to improve diagnostic accuracy, refine prognostic assessments, and guide personalized treatment strategies. His work systematically characterizes brain function and dysfunction to optimize therapeutic interventions, including pharmacological treatments, psychotherapy, and neurostimulation. He is particularly focused on conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and related dimentia, mood disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., ADHD, ASD), where individualized approaches are essential for improving patient outcomes.
Dr. Zhang has received several grants including the R01, R21, and Alzheimer's Association AARG grant. Beyond foundational research, Dr. Zhang is committed to bridging the gap between computational innovation and clinical application. By collaborating with clinicians, neuroscientists, and engineers, he strives to translate data-driven insights into actionable tools for real-world healthcare settings. His long-term vision is to enable mental health diagnostics and treatment to be guided by objective, biologically grounded biomarkers, thereby enhancing quality of life and long-term outcomes for individuals with psychiatric and neurological conditions.
The Stanford Precision NeuroIntelligence (SPNI) Lab, led by Dr. Zhang, is dedicated to advancing research in AI-driven neuroimaging and precision psychiatry. The lab develops and applies cutting-edge machine learning and deep learning methods to uncover neurobiological mechanisms associated with cognitive and behavioral dysfunctions, as well as treatment responses in mental health conditions. Its mission is to identify translational biomarkers that support precision diagnosis, prognosis, and targeted interventions for mood disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. -

Yanan Zhao
Postdoctoral Scholar, Psychiatry
BioYanan completed her Ph.D. degree at Fudan University, where she uncovered the mechanisms of sleep transitions from the evolutionary point of view in Dr Zhili Huang’s lab, with a combination of optogenetics, in vivo electrophysiology, fiber photometry, polysomnography, immunohistochemistry and so on. In the de Lecea lab, Yanan is now curious about how sleep regulates the balance between DNA damage and repair with approaches of imaging. At the same time, she is interested in larger scale imaging during different brain states. Outside the lab, Yanan enjoys biking and exploring the sunny bay area.

Participatory System Dynamics vs Audit and Feedback: A Cluster Randomized Trial of Mechanisms Of Implementation Change to Expand Reach of Evidence-Based Addiction and Mental Health Care (R01DA046651)
The most common reasons Veterans seek VA addiction and mental health care is for help with opioid and alcohol misuse, depression and PTSD. Research evidence has established highly effective treatments that prevent relapse, overdose and suicide, but even with policy mandates, performance metrics, and electronic health records to fix the problem, these treatments may only reach 3-28% of patients. This study tests participatory business engineering methods to better meet the addiction and mental health needs of Veterans and the U.S. population.
Participatory System Dynamics for Evidence-Based Addiction and Mental Healthcare (R21DA042198)
Limited access and delays to high-quality, evidence-based mental health and addiction treatments can lead to patients getting too little or ineffective care and contribute to chronic patient impairment, relapse, and death by suicide or overdose. This study evaluates a system for resolving problems with patient flow and organization in health care systems, using electronic medical record systems and a high-level of input from healthcare leadership, frontline providers and patients.

Participatory System Dynamics vs Usual Quality Improvement: Is Staff Use of Simulation an Effective, Scalable and Affordable Way to Improve Timely Veteran Access to High-quality Mental Health Care? (I01HX002521)
Participatory system dynamics (PSD) helps improve quality with existing resources, critical in mental health and all VA health care. PSD uses learning simulations to improve staff decisions, showing how goals for quality can best be achieved given local resources and constraints. We aim to significantly increase the proportion of patients who start and complete evidence-based care, and determine the costs of using PSD for improvement.
