Lara Foland-Ross
Senior Research Scholar, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences
BioI am a neuroscientist in the Division of Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. I use a variety of imaging modalities -including EEG, fNIRS and fMRI- to examine the neurobiology of mood and cognition in adolescents. The primary aim of my work is to understand how neurodevelopment is altered in adolescents with clinical and metabolic disorders, and the neuropsychiatric consequences of these alterations. Current projects include the study of adolescents with disordered puberty, type 1 diabetes, and Fragile-X syndrome. Moreover, I'm examining the neural basis of imposter syndrome and stereotype threat in women. I deeply value the process of acting on curiosity, learning from challenges, and applying creative solutions to both highlight and address gaps in our understanding of the brain and cognition.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy current research interest is the intersection of psychiatry and neuroimmunology. I am currently collaborating with Stanford Neuroimmunology in a retrospective analysis of patient data to determine the relationship between psychaitric medications and clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients with mutliple sclerosis, autoimmune encephalitis, and neuromyelitis optica.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are using functional brain imaging methods (electrophysiology and magnetic resonance imaging) to study symptoms of schizophrenia such as auditory hallucinations, self-monitoring failures, emotional blunting, and cognitive deficits.

Katie Fracalanza

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Fracalanza is interested in factors underlying the development and maintenance of mood and anxiety disorders. She has conducted research on cognitive factors thought to maintain anxiety, such as intolerance of uncertainty and perfectionism. She is interested in the patient perspective, and conducting research from a qualitative lens to better understand this.

Heather Freeman
Clinical Instructor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioHeather Freeman, PsyD, RYT 500, received her PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Pacific University in 2019. She obtained her 200-hour yoga teaching certification at the Asheville Yoga Center in Asheville, NC in 2014, and her 300-hour yoga teaching certification at the DAYA Foundation in Portland, OR. She previously earned a Master's in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University in Baltimore, MD and is currently working towards becoming a licensed psychologist.
Dr. Freeman continues to align her professional interest in psychology with the ancient wisdom and teachings of yoga. She considers herself a gestalt therapist, and views each person as inherently adaptable, resilient and existing within a variety of intertwined contexts. She combines yoga psychology with Gestalt therapy to create a holistic view of the person that draws on and connects mind, body, and spirit. Yoga, like Gestalt, encourages experiential learning in the here-and-now moment to develop and strengthen awareness and innate resources. Her clinical work has involved working with children in a psychiatry hospital, adolescents and college aged students in college counseling centers, as well as working within primary care and community mental health clinics. She has taught yoga to many different populations including graduate students, adults and children receiving mental health services, older adults with chronic health diagnoses, adults in custody and police officers.
Dr. Freeman’s research has specifically targeted identifying the perception of yoga and illuminating the diverse use of yoga philosophy as an entire system. Her dissertation is a program evaluation on the effects of a yoga teacher training program in a prison, evaluating the effects of training adults in custody to build a personal yoga practice and how to teach yoga to other adults in custody. She is passionate about expanding yoga's accessibility through program development, research and clinical work. -

Lawrence Fung MD PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Lawrence Fung an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. He is the director of the Stanford Neurodiversity Project, director of the Neurodiversity Clinic, and principal investigator at the Fung Lab. His work, which focuses on autism and neurodiversity, traverses from multi-modal neuroimaging studies to new conceptualization of neurodiversity and its application to clinical, education, and employment settings. His lab advances the understanding of neural bases of human socio-communicative and cognitive functions by using novel neuroimaging and bioanalytical technologies. Using community-based participatory research approach, his team devises and implements novel interventions to improve the lives of neurodiverse individuals by maximizing their potential and productivity. His work has been supported by various agencies including the National Institutes of Health, Autism Speaks, California Department of Developmental Services, California Department of Rehabilitation, as well as philanthropy. He received his PhD in chemical engineering from Cornell University, and MD from George Washington University. He completed his general psychiatry residency, child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship, and postdoctoral research fellowship at Stanford.

Ansgar Furst

Staff, Psych/Public Mental Health & Population SciencesBioDr. Furst is a Clinical Associate Professor (affiliated) of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a Principal Investigator and Director of the California War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) Advanced Fellowship Post-Doctoral program and Associate Director of Neuroimaging. He is also a Senior Research Scientist at the Polytrauma System of Care (PSC) at VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Dr. Furst serves as Associate Editor for the journal Frontiers in Neurology and is a member of the editorial board of NEUROLOGY. His research focuses on chronic multisymptom illness, traumatic brain injury, sleep, pain and neurodegenerative diseases.

Yuanyuan Gao (She/Her)
Postdoctoral Scholar, Psychiatry
BioYuanyuan Gao completed her PhD at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her PhD thesis researched the effects of neuromodulation on human motor learning using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). She finished her first postdoctoral training term in Dr. David Boas' lab in Boston University on advanced fNIRS data analysis. She is now a postdoctoral fellow working at Stanford University for her second term of postdoctoral training on the clinical applications of fNIRS. Her research interests are fNIRS, its multimodels with fMRI, EEG, eye-tracker, physiology measurements, neuromodulation and machine learning models, and its applications in clinical research.
