Martin Tik

BioDr. Tik is a Visiting Scholar at the Stanford Brain Stimulation Lab and Group Leader at the Medical University of Vienna. His research bridges neuroimaging and brain stimulation to uncover mechanisms of therapeutic neuromodulation.
With a background in Biological Psychology and Medical Physics, Dr. Tik has developed innovative methods for integrating Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (TMS-fMRI), enabling real-time measurement of stimulation-induced brain activity. His lab (http://tmsfmri.com) advances these tools toward individualized, state-dependent stimulation paradigms and closed-loop applications.
Building on his long-standing collaboration with the Stanford Brain Stimulation Lab, Dr. Tik works closely with Dr. Nolan Williams and colleagues to translate these neurotechnological innovations into clinical research. This ongoing Vienna–Stanford partnership aims to optimize stimulation parameters and dosing strategies for personalized TMS therapy and a better general understanding of brain circuitry in health and disease. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Tingey’s research broadly focuses on factors that promote positive outcomes in patients with complex and/or chronic conditions. She is committed to research that focuses on outcomes that are valued by patients and healthcare stakeholders.
Some of her research interests include self-management interventions in chronic conditions (e.g., multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury) and adapting evidence-based treatments to provide equitable care to individuals with chronic conditions and disabilities. She is also passionate about integrating psychology services into critical care settings to improve health outcomes among ICU survivors. -

Lénie Torregrossa, PhD

BioDr. Lénie Torregrossa is a clinical psychologist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. At Stanford, she works on the inpatient psychiatric units and the INSPIRE clinic. Dr. Torregrossa was previously a research psychologist in the brain imaging and EEG lab at the University of San Francisco (UCSF).
She specializes in schizophrenia spectrum disorders, psychosis, and serious mental illness. Her approach to treatment is person centered and recovery focused, grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and informed by acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). She emphasizes collaboration, values-based living, and meaningful functional goals.
Dr. Torregrossa's research focuses on risk and protective factors for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, self-disturbances in schizophrenia, and improving treatments for psychosis.

BioJahnia Treadwell is a Clinical Psychology doctoral student at the PAU-Stanford PsyD Consortium, graduating in 2030. Originally from Allentown, PA, and now in San Jose, CA, she holds a BA in Psychology from Bucknell University.
As an undergraduate, Jahnia completed an 80-hour certification at Transitions of PA to become an advocate counselor for the domestic violence crisis shelter. Her work in the Safe House and Housing Department strengthened her dedication to trauma-informed care and serving vulnerable populations.
Her clinical interests include trauma-informed therapy for at-risk youth and adults, emphasizing culturally responsive and spiritually integrated care. She plans to launch a private practice LLC offering Christian therapy and holistic wellness. Her long-term vision includes a multidisciplinary healing space with massage and acupuncture, an Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) clinic, and a soul cycling studio—uniting mental health, physical restoration, and spiritual renewal. -

Mickey Trockel

BioMickey Trockel is the Director of Evidence Based Innovation for the Stanford University School of Medicine WellMD Center. His development of novel measurement tools has led to growing focus on professional fulfillment as a foundational aim of efforts to promote physician well-being. His scholarship also identifies interpersonal interactions at work as a modifiable core determinate of an organizational culture that cultivates wellness.
Dr. Trockel serves as the chair of the Physician Wellness Academic Consortium Scientific Board, which is a group of academic medical centers working together to improve physician wellbeing. The consortium sites have adopted the physician wellness assessment system Dr. Trockel and his colleagues have developed, which offers longitudinal data for benchmarking and natural experiment based program evaluation. His previous research included focus on college student health, and evaluation of the efficacy of a national evidence based psychotherapy dissemination effort. His more recent scholarship has focused on physician wellbeing. He is particularly interested in developing and demonstrating the efficacy of interventions designed to promote wellbeing by improving social culture determinants of wellbeing across student groups, employee work teams, or larger organizations. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAs a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Erin Gibson’s lab, I am integrating my expertise in molecular signaling and systems neuroscience to study the role of OPCs in sleep. My interest in sleep has been further reinforced by observing the dramatic shifts in sleep architecture across developmental stages as a new parent, highlighting the necessity of sleep for neural refinement. My current research uses in vivo calcium imaging and closed-loop optogenetics to determine how OPC-neuron communication coordinates hippocampal sharp-wave ripples. By characterizing how aging blunts OPC responsiveness to sleep, I aim to identify novel strategies to preserve memory and promote healthy cognitive aging.

Jason Tucciarone, MD, PhD

BioJason Tucciarone, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. A neuroscientist and psychiatrist, he leads a laboratory focused on uncovering the biological mechanisms of mental illness and developing novel therapies for mood disorders and addiction. His research centers on defining new cell types and evolutionarily conserved neural circuits involved in emotional processing, with the goal of identifying new therapeutic entry points. Using optogenetic, chemogenetic, neuroimaging, and behavioral approaches in mouse models of addiction, his lab investigates vulnerable brain circuitry underlying opioid use disorder. He also works and collaborates with the Depression Research Clinic, participating in academic and industry sponsored clinical trials investigating novel antidepressant therapies.
Clinically, Dr. Tucciarone works in Stanford’s Neuropsychiatry Clinic, where he treats patients with complex presentations at the interface of psychiatry and neurology, with particular interest in functional neurological disorders. He also sees a small cohort of psychotherapy patients in the Individual Psychotherapy Clinic and works shifts on Stanford’s inpatient psychiatry units.
Dr. Tucciarone completed his psychiatry training through Stanford’s Research Residency Track, where he conducted postdoctoral research under the supervision of Drs. Robert Malenka and Alan Schatzberg. During residency, his research examined neural circuits recruited during opioid withdrawal and explored strategies to enhance the anti-suicidal effects of ketamine through μ-opioid receptor partial agonism.
He received his bachelor’s degree in biology and philosophy from Union College, followed by three years as a Post-Baccalaureate IRTA fellow at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, where he developed MRI-reportable contrast agents to map neuronal connectivity. He then entered the Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD) at Stony Brook University, completing his PhD in neuroscience under the mentorship of Dr. Josh Huang at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. His doctoral work used mouse genetic approaches to dissect excitatory and inhibitory cortical circuits, with a focus on chandelier interneurons in the prefrontal cortex.
In addition to his research and clinical work, Dr. Tucciarone is deeply committed to teaching and mentorship. During residency, he helped restructure neuroscience education for trainees and currently teaches introductory lectures on the neuroscience of addiction, PTSD, psychosis, and mood disorders. He leads resident group supervision in introductory psychodynamic psychotherapy and supervises undergraduates, medical students, residents, and clinical fellows in psychiatry clinics. -

Dona Tversky

BioDona A. Tversky, MD, MPH is a psychiatrist and clinical educator whose work focuses on the intersection of psychodynamic psychotherapy and community-based preventive mental health. Her mission centers on the creation of psychologically healthy environments—at both the individual and systemic levels—to foster resilience and expand the scope of preventive psychiatric care. At Stanford, Dr. Tversky focuses on the training of future clinicians and the dissemination of psychiatric literacy. She serves as a clinical supervisor for residents in psychodynamic psychotherapy and teaches "How to Think Like a Shrink" for both Stanford undergraduates and the Stanford Continuing Studies program.
In her community-based work, Dr. Tversky serves as an educator and psychiatric consultant for the integrated behavioral health team at Ravenswood Family Health Center in East Palo Alto. Her current initiatives bridge clinical care with environmental design to promote wellness; these include a collaborative project to connect the Ravenswood clinic to the Baylands Bay Trail and a partnership with the Stanford d.school, Peninsula Healthcare Connection, and Palo Alto Medical Foundation to develop a psychology-informed clinic for unhoused individuals near the Stanford campus. -
Mirko Uljarevic

BioI am a medically trained researcher focused academic with a background in developmental psychopathology, psychometrics and big data science. My research takes a life-span perspective and is driven by the urgent need to improve outcomes for people with autism and other neuropsychiatric (NPD) disorders and neurodevelopmental conditions (NDD). My primary research interest has focused on combining cutting-edge psychometric procedures and a big data approach to better understand structure of clinical phenotypes across autism and other NPD and NDD and on using this knowledge to improve existing and develop new clinical assessments that are more effective for screening and diagnosis, tracking the natural and treatment-related symptom progression and for use in genetic and neurobiological studies. In addition to my focus on the development of outcome measures, I have collaborated with leading psychopathology researchers and groups in the United States, Europe and Australia on numerous projects spanning a range of topics including genetics, treatment and employment, with a particular focus on understanding risk and resilience factors underpinning poor mental health outcomes in adolescents and adults. Most recently, through several competitively funded projects, I have led the statistical analyses to uncover the latent structure of social and communication and restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRB) clinical phenotypes across NPD and NDD. These findings have enabled us to (i) start capturing and characterizing a highly variable social functioning phenotype across a range of disorders and understanding mechanisms underpinning this variability, (ii) combine phenotypic and genetic units of analyses to advance our understanding of the genetic architecture of RRB, and (iii) focus on identification and characterization of subgroups of individuals that share distinct symptom profiles and demonstrate clinical utility and neurobiological validity. Importantly, this work has provided key information for developing a programmatic line of research aimed at developing novel, comprehensive assessment protocols that combine parent and clinician reports, objective functioning indicators and incorporate state-of-the-art psychometric, mobile and connected technologies and procedures.
I am a co-director of the recently established Program for Psychometrics and Measurement-Based Care (https://med.stanford.edu/sppmc.html) that aims to bring together world-leading expertise in clinical science, psychometrics, and big data analytics to bridge the gap between the science of measurement development and clinical practice and bring improvements to both clinical care and research. -

Dr. Valle brings a distinctive international clinical background to his practice. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from The Wright Institute in Berkeley. He also holds a Master’s degree in crisis and trauma from Tel Aviv University and is a licensed clinical psychologist in Mexico City, his place of origin. -
Peter Johannes van Roessel

BioDr. Peter van Roessel, MD, PhD, completed his MD at Stanford University and his residency training in psychiatry at Columbia University and the New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, with additional training in psychodynamic psychotherapy via the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Prior to joining the clinical faculty at Stanford, he worked for several years as Associate Director of the general research unit of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, a premier state-funded research hospital affiliated with Columbia University.
At Stanford, Dr. van Roessel sees adult mood and anxiety disorders outpatients through the Assessment and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Clinics and participates in resident training and patient care as director of the resident Continuity Clinic and as a supervisor in psychodynamic psychotherapy. He additionally directs the third-year resident curriculum in psychopathology and psychopharmacology and co-leads a new adult outpatient ketamine-assisted psychotherapy clinic.
As Director of Clinical Research for the department's Rodriguez Translational Therapeutics Lab, he sees individuals with obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders for evaluations and research-protocol driven clinical treatment and leads clinical neuroscience studies pioneering rapid-acting interventions in OCD. Clinically motivated research interests include the nature and neural correlates of metacognitive awareness ('insight') in OCD and related disorders, and particularly the relationship of awareness to mechanisms of attentional control and the processing of incongruity and error. Dr. van Roessel additionally contributes as co-investigator to the Suppes Exploratory Therapeutics Laboratory and to the Williams PANLab, on clinical trials advancing psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies and biomarker-informed precision medicine in depression and posttraumatic stress disorder.
Dr. van Roessel pursued research training in basic neuroscience prior to his clinical training, completing an MPhil in Biology via the Open University, UK, for research performed at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen Germany, and a PhD in molecular and developmental neurobiology at the University of Cambridge, UK. He has contributed to work in the lab of Dr Julia Kaltschmidt (Stanford) on studies of GABAergic/Glutamatergic interneuronal circuity in mouse. He received a 2018 NARSAD Young Investigator Award to pursue study of nitrous oxide as a rapid-acting treatment for OCD, he was a 2020-2022 Miller Foundation Fellow, and from 2020 to 2022 was a Advanced Fellow in Mental Illness Treatment and Research via the Sierra Pacific Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center of the Palo Alto VA. Dr. van Roessel is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American College of Psychiatrists. -

We are first and foremost practicing physicians; we treat patients and families. Then, grounded by the foundational oath in medicine to “do no harm,” we help companies build products that prioritize user health with responsibility and care. Our work has shaped platforms used by millions—helping Pinterest design "compassionate search", guiding TikTok in healthy screen-time management, and partnering with ML Commons to establish the first mental health safety benchmarks for large language models (LLMs).
Brainstorm is further committed to “do good” by leveraging these technologies to build a healthier digital world. We advised Dove’s Self-Esteem Project and Real Beauty Prompt Playbook, which studied AI’s impact on beauty and set new digital standards of representation. Additionally, after sharing the results of research conducted with the Stanford Center for AI Safety on the ethics, efficacy, and safety of LLMs providing mental health support, we developed the “Framework for Healthy AI” to guide industry best practices in AI product innovation.
As we apply this expertise to improve users' daily lives, it’s clear that addressing digital intimacy presents unique challenges compared to traditional human relationships. This technology is still emerging, and we are all adapting to it in real-time as it evolves. The big question is: How can we help users cultivate healthy, safe digital relationships?
After seeing success with the Stanford Social Media Safety Plan, which reduced harmful digital behaviors among users, we are now designing the Stanford GenAI Psychological Safety Plan (GPS). The Stanford GPS is a tool to help individuals, tech developers, and policymakers navigate this new terrain and make informed decisions about AI’s role in mental health.

Mytilee Vemuri

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, with clinical and research interests in hormonal influences on women’s mental and cognitive health. After Psychiatry residency I completed a NIMH research fellowship studying gender differences in metabolic complications such as dyslipidemia, obesity, and insulin-resistance in patients with bipolar disorder. As a research fellow, I also provided clinical oversight for research participants in studies evaluating hormonal change, metabolic biomarkers and mood. More recently, I have collaborated with PI Duncan and her research group on projects studying relationships between sex hormones and mood/anxiety disorders, particularly in peri-menopausal women. From these experiences I have gained experience in conducting clinical research and collaborating in interdisciplinary research teams. I have also had over 20 years of clinical experience as an attending psychiatrist in Stanford Women’s Wellness psychiatry, general psychiatry and primary care clinics treating a wide range of psychiatric conditions including perimenopausal and geriatric mood disorders. I have published review articles detailing the evidence-basis for treating mood disorders in women during times of hormonal change, and the role of hormones as potential treatments. I also serve as the Stanford Psychiatry Department’s clinical quality improvement leader, where I oversee multiple interdisciplinary improvement teams charged with improving the quality and efficiency of care processes. I currently specialize in managing perimenopausal mood disorders and have an interest in the judicious use of menopausal hormone therapy as an adjunctive treatment for mood symptoms in this population. My clinical and research experience in the intersection of women’s mental health, sex-steroid hormones, and the perimenopause, along with broad experience working on cross-disciplinary teams, will bring valuable input to this research team.
