    BioDr. Matthew Gunther graduated with a BA in psychology from the University of Southern California in 2009. Afterwards, he pursued training as a Marriage and Family Therapist, earning a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at Pepperdine University in 2011. His career goals shifted from a focus on psychotherapy towards medicine, subsequently graduating from medical school from the University of California, Irvine in 2018. Dr. Gunther completed his general adult psychiatry residency at the University of Southern California/LAC+USC Medical Center in 2022 where he served as Chief Resident for the inpatient service. He subsequently completed his Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry fellowship at Stanford University in 2023.

    Dr. Gunther has a passion for teaching and mentorship of medical trainees at all levels. Throughout all stages of training, he was actively involved in admissions, as well as program development. During residency, his particular focus was on curriculum development for inpatient psychiatry, as well as quality improvement projects focused on staff safety and accessibility of psychiatry services for the Los Angeles County population. His work on these areas, in addition to teaching efforts and scholarly work, earned him the Excellence in Residency award for each year of residency training.

    Dr. Gunther joined the faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine in July 2023 and currently serves as Assistant Program Director of the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship. His interests in psychiatry include critical care psychiatry, transplant psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, medical education, psychopharmacology in the medically ill, and integrated care. Dr. Gunther works in the Integrated Behavioral Health program where he is Director of Education, with particular focus on resident-based primary care clinics. In addition, he is an attending on the Critical Care and Inpatient Consult-Liaison Psychiatry services.

    BioDr. Laura Hack is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Director of Novel & Precision Neurotherapeutics at the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness. Dr. Hack's translational research program focuses on identifying bioclinical subtypes of depression and comorbid stress-related disorders and testing mechanistically-guided treatments for these subtypes. Dr. Hack studies treatments spanning repurposed medications, such as pramipexole and guanfacine, neuromodulation techniques, ketamine, MDMA, and psilocybin.

    Dr. Hack directs the Stanford Translational Precision Mental Health Clinic (STPMHC), a cutting-edge consultation clinic for patients with a primary diagnosis of depression and comorbid anxiety disorders. Providers in the clinic integrate objective measures with a patient's history and presentation to inform treatment considerations and provide insights into the biological basis of a patient's condition. These measures, which may also help reduce self-blame and foster motivation to pursue recommended treatments, include the investigational use of clinical circuit scores derived from functional magnetic resonance imaging, symptom questionnaires, objective neurocognitive assessments, pharmacogenomic testing, and laboratory work. Patients and their referring doctors receive a detailed report with an explanation of the findings and the implications for treatment.

    Additionally, as Deputy Director of the Precision Neuromodulation Clinic (PNC) within the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, she specializes in delivering novel treatments, including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and ketamine, to patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression and comorbid stress-related disorders.

    BioHeather has been part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford since 2002. She directly manages appointment matters related to Professoriate faculty and supervises a team of faculty affairs administrators who manage appointment matters for faculty on the Clinician Educator line and other faculty appointment lines in the Department. Further responsibilities include supervision of medical education team members and contributions to strategic planning and development of new departmental initiatives. Prior to her current work in faculty affairs, Heather was as a clinical research manager in the Stanford Depression Research Center and the Stanford Women’s Wellness Clinic. She has published 40+ research articles in psychiatry and neuroscience journals. Her education includes a Master of Science in Psychology, as well as a Master of Arts in Social Psychology.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy primary area of scholarly and clinical interest is the pathogenesis of problem behaviors shown by individuals diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), particularly those with neurogenetic forms of IDD, such as fragile X syndrome, Cornelia de Lange syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome. My work aims to both advance understanding of these disorders and to identify effective new treatment approaches for pediatric and adult patient populations by state-of-the-art methodologies, such as brain imaging, eye tracking and functional analysis to determine how environmental and biological factors affect the development of aberrant behaviors in these syndromes. The end goal of my research is to create patient-specific methods for treating the symptoms of these disorders.

    BioHaijing Hallenbeck, PhD, is a research investigator at the National Center for PTSD Dissemination & Training Division at VA Palo Alto Health Care System. She is also an Instructor (Affiliated) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis and completed her predoctoral clinical internship and postdoctoral research fellowship at VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Funded by the VA VISN 21 Early Career Award Program, Dr. Hallenbeck's research focuses on PTSD and depression and their impact on psychosocial functioning. She studies how to leverage digital health technology (e.g., mobile apps) and analytic tools (e.g., machine learning) to provide timely and personalized assessments and interventions for these conditions.
