Ramzi Emanuel Dudum

BioDr. Dudum is a cardiologist and population health expert working to develop novel risk prediction methods and implementation strategies to create practices and systems that allow for reductions in cardiovascular disease. He completed a Masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins concentrating in epidemiology and biostatistics and a Doctorate of Medicine at George Washington University.
He completed internal medicine residency training as part of the Osler Medical Service, where he worked under the mentorship of Drs. Roger Blumenthal and Michael Blaha to study improving cardiovascular risk prediction and coronary artery calcium. Given his focus on population health and implementation science, he also helped launch and refine risk adjustment tools and implemented guideline-directed medical care pathways. During his time there, he was recognized for his clinical acumen and dedication to patient care.
He came to Stanford for his cardiovascular medicine fellowship and continued research in coronary artery calcium under the mentorship of Drs. David Maron and Fatima Rodriguez while also conducting cardiovascular health implementation science work under the mentorship of Dr. Steve Asch. He serves as the co-investigator of a prospective randomized trial testing the effects of notification of incidental coronary artery calcium on statin initiation rates among those with and without cardiovascular disease (NCT 05588895). He has worked with hospital leaders to implement digital health and artificial intelligence tools, creating the infrastructure for the prospective use of AI-algorithms on radiology studies. As a preventive cardiologist and population health expert, he leads efforts in the preventive cardiology section related to improving cardiovascular health. -
Rebecca M. Gardner

BioMy research interests are in maternal nutrition and well-being, with a focus on hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), defined as severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that often leads to significant maternal undernutrition, poor antepartum and postpartum mental health, and is the second leading cause of hospitalization during pregnancy. I am interested in the link between HG and maternal and child outcomes, particularly hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and neurobehavioral disorders in childhood like autism; and whether certain environmental exposures, including ambient air pollution and wildfires, exacerbate HG symptoms, leading to hospitalization. Additionally, I am interested in applying causal methods traditionally used in economics to public health.
Before starting a PhD, I was a biostatistician in the Quantitative Sciences Unit at Stanford for four years where I co-authored over thirty publications, collaborating with clinicians on various domains including developmental behavioral pediatrics, reproductive endocrinology & infertility, oncology, and clinical trials. I completed my MS in Statistics at Brigham Young University in 2016, where I collaborated with cardiologists to develop a new approach to diagnose rheumatic heart disease in pediatric patients in Samoa for my Master's thesis. -
Jlateh Vincent Jappah

Stanford Student Employee, Hoover InstitutionBioJlateh Vincent Jappah is a PhD Candidate in Health Policy (Health Economics) at Stanford. His research interests intersect between methods that enhance access to the social determinants of health and the provision of appropriate and timely healthcare services, with the aim of reducing avoidable morbidity and mortality and improving overall health and well-being, especially for underserved and vulnerable populations.
Jappah contends that although health insurance and access to healthcare services are important elements in the health production function, other structural and socio-economic factors collude to either foster or erode health. As such, he has a keen interest in public policy, economics, medicine, global public health, maternal and child health, and a curiosity to understand those socio-political and institutional forces that shape health and well-being. He is also interested in machine learning and artificial intelligence in healthcare.
In addition to the United States, Jappah has lived and worked in several countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe.
He is bi-lingual (English and Russian). -
Junjie Lu

BioJunjie's research is centered on the social determinants of minority health, epidemiological methods, and clinical effectiveness. He is deeply committed to understanding the health disparities faced by minority populations. His clinical background helps bridge the gap between research and practical application, aiming to improve healthcare outcomes in real-world settings.
Junjie Lu earned a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he concentrated on Health and Social Behavior. He also holds an MBBS and an MS from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Junjie gained practical experience as an intern doctor at a university hospital for two years, during which he led a pilot randomized controlled trial on the effects of acupuncture on depressive symptoms. -
Zachary T Renfro

Masters Student in Epidemiology and Clinical Research, admitted Autumn 2023BioZachary studied biology at the University of Arkansas where he researched the impact of temperature on macrophage cytokine production across animal species as well as the neural basis of saccadic mislocalization. After graduation, he worked at the Arkansas Department of Health where he developed and implemented Arkansas' first plan to eliminate tuberculosis. Additionally he researched the contribution of epigenetic regulation on the susceptibility, development, and maintenance of chronic pain at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and participated in the front line response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
At Stanford, he is enrolled in the MD and MS in epidemiology and clinical research programs. His current research interests include emerging infectious diseases, immunological response to infection, and the impact of climate change on infectious disease.
