Michael Kozal
Senior Associate Dean for Veterans Affairs and Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases)
BioDr. Kozal was appointed Senior Associate Dean for Veteran Affairs at Stanford School of Medicine and Chief of Staff at VA Palo Alto Health Care System in 2021. Prior to coming to Stanford, he served as Associate Dean for Veteran Affairs at Yale University School of Medicine and the Chief of Staff at VA Connecticut Healthcare System.
Dr. Kozal is a translational researcher who has focused his research career on three areas: 1) investigating the genetic determinants of HIV and HCV drug resistance, 2) the development of new molecular methods to detect viral mutations, and 3) HIV and HCV clinical trials involving new drugs and diagnostic technology. Dr. Kozal is an expert in microarray and deep sequencing technology receiving patents for his work in genotyping. Dr. Kozal previously directed the Yale HIV Clinical Trials Group and has more than 20 years of experience in running clinical trials, serving as the principal investigator or site investigator on >40 HIV and Hepatitis C trials. He has served on multiple VA and NIH/NCI review panels and is a current a member of the DHHS/NIH Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents. -
Max Lamparth
Postdoctoral Scholar, Infectious Diseases
BioMax is a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for International Security and Cooperation, the Stanford Center for AI Safety, and the Stanford Existential Risks Initiative at Stanford University. I am advised by Prof. Clark Barrett, Prof. Steve Luby, and Prof. Paul Edwards.
With his research, he wants to make AI systems more secure and safe to use. Specifically, he is focussing on how to improve the robustness and alignment of language models, how to make their inner workings more interpretable, and how to reduce the potential for misuses.
He received his Ph.D. in August 2023 from the Physics Department at the Technical University of Munich and previously a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg. -
Vivian Levy

Staff, Medicine - Med/Infectious DiseasesBioVivian Levy is Chief of Infectious Diseases at San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC), San Mateo County’s safety net hospital and clinic system in northern California since 2015 and the County’s STD Control Officer since 2006. San Mateo County has 760,000 persons and connects the urban centers of San Francisco and San Jose, California.
Dr. Levy leads Stanford’s Internal Medicine outpatient Infectious Diseases rotation for Internal Medicine residents. She has served 2 terms as president of the California STD/HIV Controllers Association. From 2004-2008, she was the medical officer for the Chemoprophylaxis for HIV prevention in men study in Lima, Peru.
In 2020, she was the San Mateo Medical Center site investigator for the Expanded Access Treatment Protocol: Remdesivir for the Treatment of SARS-CoV2 Infection. She began SMMC patient recruitment for Stanford outpatient COVID studies July 2020 with the goal of increasing historically underrepresented populations participation and access in COVID outpatient treatment trials.
She has an undergraduate degree from Brown University (1989,) an MD from Rush University Medical College in Chicago (1994,) completed internship in Internal Medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago (1995) Internal Medicine residency at Northwestern University (1997) and an Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine fellowship at Stanford University (2000-2004.) -
Nathan Lo
Assistant Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research laboratory is interested in studying the transmission of infectious diseases and impact of public health interventions with an ultimate goal of informing public health policy. We study a diverse set of pathogens including vaccine-preventable infections (including COVID-19) and neglected tropical diseases. Our group applies diverse computational methodologies, including tools of epidemiology, modeling, pathogen genomics, and policy analysis.
A large emphasis of our work is translating scientific evidence into public health policy. Our track record includes multiple studies that have changed policy in the fields of neglected tropical diseases and COVID-19. We work closely with policy organizations like the World Health Organization and the California Department of Public Health.
Our current research focuses on the following areas:
(1) Vaccine-preventable infectious diseases (including COVID-19) in the United States, with a focus on studying vaccines and transmission dynamics
(2) Public health strategies for control and elimination of globally important neglected infectious diseases, such as helminths infections (schistosomiasis, strongyloidiasis) and typhoid fever

She also has a special interest in caring for patients with Cystic fibrosis or who have had a lung transplant as well as Nontuberculous mycobacterial Infections.
