Rafael Stern
Postdoctoral Scholar, Earth System Science
BioRafael Stern’s research focuses on the natural processes and mechanisms that regulate methane exchange between tropical forests and the atmosphere. He works with a network of eddy-covariance, ecological, and meteorological research stations across the Amazon rainforest, tropical Africa, and Asia.
Rafael earned his Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, where he was advised by Professor Dan Yakir. His doctoral research used a mobile eddy-covariance system to compare the biogeophysical and biogeochemical effects of different ecosystems and photovoltaic fields in drylands. He holds an M.Sc. in Climate and Environment from the National Institute of Amazonian Research in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, where he was advised by Professor Paulo Artaxo and studied the physical and chemical properties of atmospheric particles during the Amazon forest-fire season. He also holds a B.Sc. in Geography from the Department of Geosciences at Universidade Federal Fluminense in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rafael was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. -
Hanif Sulaiman

BioI'm interested in the marine nitrogen cycle, particularly in nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas that plays a key role in stratospheric ozone destruction. I'm focused on delineating nitrous oxide's accumulation (production-consumption) pathways in various oceanographic regions.

Jacob VanderRoest
Postdoctoral Scholar, Earth System Science
BioJacob started as a postdoctoral scholar in Dr. Scott Fendorf's lab in August 2026. Jacob graduated from Hope College in 2021 with a B.S. in chemistry and a geology minor and graduated from Colorado State University in 2026 with a PhD in analytical chemistry from Dr. Thomas Borch's lab. During his time at Colorado State University, Jacob investigated the impacts of wildfires on soil organic matter chemistry and carbon cycling. In Dr. Fendorf's lab at Stanford, Jacob is studying plastic contamination in compost alongside further wildfire research determining the organic carbon composition of wildfire smoke. Outside of work, Jacob enjoys trail running, swimming, playing board games, being impressed at the size of redwood trees, and teaching salsa and bachata dancing.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsVitousek's research interests include: evaluating the global cycles of nitrogen and phosphorus, and how they are altered by human activity; understanding how the interaction of land and culture contributed to the sustainability of Hawaiian (and other Pacific) agriculture and society before European contact; and working to make fertilizer applications more efficient and less environmentally damaging (especially in rapidly growing economies)

Yuan Wang

BioYuan Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth System Science at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. He is also a Center Fellow in the Woods Institute for the Environment. Prior to joining Stanford, he was an Associate Professor at Purdue University and a research scientist at California Institute of Technology. His research group aims to advance the understanding of the physical and chemical interactions between atmospheric constituents and climate change. Specifically, his group conducts research related to aerosol-cloud-radiation interactions and their climatic implications, aerosol properties and haze formation, cloud and precipitation microphysics, and the assessment of the greenhouse gas and aerosol forcings on the atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere. They develop and use multiscale numerical and AI models in combination with space-borne and in situ measurements to address those scientific questions. Yuan is a recipient of the James B. Macelwane Medal and James R. Holton Award from the American Geophysical Union, the Henry G. Houghton Award from the American Meteorological Society, and the CAREER Award from National Science Foundation.
