Pedro Tanaka
BioPedro Tanaka is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Anesthesia at Stanford University Medical School. He is Brazilian and completed medical school, anesthesiology training, and his PhD in clinical investigation in Brazil. He graduated from the Master of Academic Medicine program at the University of Southern California in 2014 and completed a doctoral program in education at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2021. At Stanford, he has been involved with resident education as an Associate Program Director and served as the inaugural Vice-Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Department of Anesthesiology. He currently serves as an Associate Designated Institutional Official for Graduate Medical Education and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. He is also thrilled to be an Assistant Director with COACHME. Molly Tanenbaum

Clinical Associate Professor (By courtesy), Pediatrics - EndocrinologyBioDr. Tanenbaum is a clinical psychologist and clinical researcher committed to improving health and quality of life outcomes for people with diabetes. Dr. Tanenbaum’s research focuses on two main areas: 1) understanding and optimizing the role of technology (e.g. mobile technology/mHealth, diabetes devices, automated insulin delivery), and the feedback technology provides, to improve diabetes management; and 2) understanding the emotional experience of living with diabetes. Her recent work focused on developing a telehealth-based behavioral intervention for adults with type 1 diabetes to support adoption and sustained use of continuous glucose monitoring technology. She has expertise in using qualitative and mixed methods to take a human centered approach to understanding the context of living with and managing a chronic condition. Dr. Tanenbaum also has an interest in compassion-based approaches to addressing diabetes distress. As a licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Tanenbaum provides consultation and behavioral medicine interventions with people living with diabetes.

Paul C Tang

BioDr. Tang is Adjunct Professor in the Clinical Excellence Research Center at Stanford University and a practicing internist at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. Most recently, he was Vice President, Chief Health Transformation Officer at IBM Watson Health. He has served in executive administration roles in health systems for over 25 years. Prior to joining Watson Health, Dr. Tang was Vice President, Chief Innovation and Technology Officer at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF), directing the David Druker Center for Health Systems Innovation, a disruptive innovation center focused on grand challenges in health. Dr. Tang led one of the earliest implementations of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system in the country in 1996, and in 2000, he co-developed MyChart, the first commercial patient portal, with Epic.
Dr. Tang is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, and has served on numerous NAM study committees, including a patient-safety committee he chaired that published two reports: Patient Safety: A New Standard for Care, and Key Capabilities of an Electronic Health Record System. He is a member of the Health and Medicine Division committee of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Dr. Tang was co-chair of the federal Health Information Technology Policy committee from 2009-2017. He has served as board chair for several health informatics professional associations, including the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). He has served on the boards of AMIA, National Quality Forum, AcademyHealth, Computer-based Patient Record Institute, Joint Health Information Technology Alliance, NAM Board on Health Care Services, and National eHealth Collaborative. Dr. Tang is a recipient of the Nicholas E. Davies Award for Excellence in Computer-based Patient Record System Implementation, and the AMIA Don E. Detmer Award for Health Policy Contributions in Informatics. He currently holds one patent and has 16 patents pending. He has published numerous papers in medical informatics, appearing in New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Health Affairs, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. Dr. Tang is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Medical Informatics, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives, and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
He received his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and his M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Stanford University and is a board-certified practicing internist at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. -
Sindy Tang

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsProf. Sindy K.Y. Tang develops engineering platforms that measure biological systems and convert these measurements into quantitative datasets. Her research focuses on experimental systems that probe biological processes across cellular and tissue scales, particularly how physical context—geometry, mechanics, and spatial organization—shapes biological function. Current work spans immune diagnostics, spatial tissue sampling for multi-omics analysis, and single-cell perturbation studies.

Sami Gamal-Eldin Tantawi

BioFor over a decade I have advocated for dedicated research efforts on the basic physics of room temperature high gradient structures and new initiatives for the associated RF systems. This required demanding multidisciplinary collaboration to harness limited resources. The basic elements of the research needed to be inclusive to address not only the fundamentals of accelerator structures but also the fundamentals of associated technologies such as RF manipulation and novel microwave power sources. These basic research efforts were not bundled with specific developments for an application or a general program. The emerging technologies promise a broad, transformational impact.
With this underlying philosophy in mind, in 2006 the US High Gradient Research Collaboration for which I am the spokesman was formed. SLAC is the host of this collaboration, which comprises MIT, ANL, University of Maryland and University of Colorado, NRL and a host of SBIR companies. This led to the revitalization of this research area worldwide. The international collaborative effort grew to include KEK in Japan, INFN, Frascati in Italy, the Cockcroft Institute in the UK, and the CLIC team at CERN.
This effort led to a new understanding of the geometrical effects affecting high gradient operations. The collaborative work led to new advances in understanding the gradient limits of photonic band gap structures. Now we have a new optimization methodology for accelerator structure geometries and ongoing research on alternate and novel materials. These efforts doubled the usable gradient in normal conducting high gradient linacs to more than 100 MV/m, thus revitalizing the spread of the technology to other applications including compact Inverse Compton Scattering gamma-ray sources for national security applications, and compact proton linacs for cancer therapy. -
Rebecca Tarlau

BioRebecca Tarlau is Associate Professor of Education at Stanford Graduate School of Education. Dr. Tarlau was formerly Associate Professor of Education and of Labor and Employment Relations at the Pennsylvania State University, where she was the co-founder of the Penn State Consortium for Social Movements and Education Research and Practice. Her ethnographic research agenda has four broad areas of focus: (1) theories of the state and state-society relations; (2) social movements and popular education, labor education, and critical pedagogy; (3) Latin American education and development; and (4) teachers’ unions, teacher activism, and teachers’ work.
Dr. Tarlau is the author of the award-winning Occupying School, Occupying Land: How the Landless Workers Movement Transformed Brazilian Education (2019, Oxford University Press, published in Portuguese in 2023 by Expressão Popular), which analyzes how a large grassroots social movement has linked education reform to its vision for agrarian reform by developing pedagogical practices for schools that foster activism, direct democracy, and collective forms of work. Contrary to the belief that social movements cannot engage the state without demobilizing, Tarlau shows how educational institutions can help movements recruit new activists, diversify their membership, increase technical knowledge, and garner political power. Dr. Tarlau’s forthcoming book Teacher Organizing Across the Americas: Diverse Strategies for Transforming Unions, Schools and Societies (Oxford University Press) explores why teachers’ unions in Brazil, Mexico, and the United States have embraced radically different strategies, and the important role of internal oppositional movements in transforming the goals and strategies of labor unions. Currently Dr. Tarlau is involved in a multi-country comparative study analyzing the impact of sustainable agriculture education on agroecological knowledge and landscape change in Latin America. -

BioReimagining liquid waste streams as resources can lead to recovery of valuable products and more efficient, less costly approaches to reducing harmful discharges to the environment. Pollutants in effluent streams can be captured and used as valuable inputs to other processes. For example, municipal wastewater contains resources like energy, water, nutrients, and metals. The Tarpeh Lab develops and evaluates novel approaches to resource recovery from “waste” waters at several synergistic scales: molecular mechanisms of chemical transport and transformation; novel unit processes that increase resource efficiency; and systems-level assessments that identify optimization opportunities. We employ understanding of electrochemistry, separations, thermodynamics, kinetics, and reactor design to preferentially recover resources from waste. We leverage these molecular-scale insights to increase the sustainability of engineered processes in terms of energy, environmental impact, and cost.

Peter Tass
Professor of Neurosurgery
BioDr. Peter Tass investigates and develops neuromodulation techniques for understanding and treating neurologic conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, dysfunction following stroke and tinnitus. He creates invasive and non-invasive therapeutic procedures by means of comprehensive computational neuroscience studies and advanced data analysis techniques. The computational neuroscience studies guide experiments that use clinical electrophysiology measures, such as high density EEG recordings and MRI imaging, and various outcome measures. He has pioneered a neuromodulation approach based on thorough computational modelling that employs dynamic self-organization, plasticity and other neuromodulation principles to produce sustained effects after stimulation. To investigate stimulation effects and disease-related brain activity, he focuses on the development of stimulation methods that cause a sustained neural desynchronization by an unlearning of abnormal synaptic interactions. He also performs and contributes to pre-clinical and clinical research in related areas.

Christopher John Tassone
Associate Professor (Research) of Photon Science
BioChristopher J. Tassone, PhD is the Associate Lab Director for the Energy Sciences Directorate. His scientific interests lie in the development and characterization of advanced materials for energy. Dr. Tassone’s research addresses critical challenges in energy transition materials, plastics production, and catalysis, with the goal of improving energy technologies and utilizing domestically secure feedstocks. He is an expert in synchrotron-based X-ray scattering techniques, which he uses to probe the time resolved structure of materials as they are synthesized, and how they evolve under operation. He compliments this focus on developing operando and in-situ methods, with the development and application of machine learning for data interpretation and experimental steering. Through this work, Dr. Tassone helps accelerate the discovery of innovative materials for energy and catalysis.

BioDr. Steven Tate serves as a Clinical Associate Professor specializing in addiction medicine within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago and his master's in medical statistics from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He then completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania and his fellowship in addiction medicine at Stanford. Dr. Tate sees patients in the Stanford Addiction Medicine/Dual Diagnosis Clinic and in the hospital on the Inpatient Addiction Medicine Consult Service. He is interested in teaching evidence-based addiction medicine and translating evidence into practice to improve the care of patients with substance use disorders.

BioTyler Tate, MD, MA, is a pediatric palliative care physician, ethicist, and researcher at Stanford. His research interests include suffering and flourishing, love and emotions, religion and bioethics, pediatric ethics, and the medical humanities. Pahnwat Tonya Taweesedt, MD

BioDr. Pahnwat Taweesedt is a board-certified, fellowship-trained sleep specialist at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical instructor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Division of Sleep Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Taweesedt specializes in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA). She also treats obesity hypoventilation syndrome, a condition that causes breathing issues during sleep.
Her research focuses on sleep technology, the relationship between sleep and neurodevelopmental disorders, and sleep in the aging population. She has also studied medications for narcolepsy (a disorder that affects the brain’s ability to control sleep-wake cycles).
Dr. Taweesedt has contributed chapters to a variety of medical textbooks, including “Advances in Health and Disease” and “Vasculitis: From Diagnosis to Treatment.” She also serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed research journals, including Sleep Science and Practice, Healthcare, and Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy overall research interest is to understand how the immune system interacts with the nervous system after injury to promote the transition from acute to chronic pain. In my clinical practice I care for patients with persistent pain that often occurs after minor trauma such as fracture or surgery. Using basic science approaches including whole system immune phenotyping with mass cytometry and genetic manipulation of peripheral and central immune cells, we seek to dissect the temporal and tissue-specific contribution of these cells to either promotion or inhibition of healing.

BioJohn B. Taylor is the Mary and Robert Raymond Professor of Economics at Stanford University and the George P. Shultz Senior Fellow in Economics at the Hoover Institution. He is Director of the Stanford Introductory Economics Center. He formerly served as director of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, where he is now a senior fellow.
Taylor’s academic fields of expertise are macroeconomics, monetary economics, and international economics. He is known for his research on the foundations of modern monetary theory and policy, which has been applied by central banks and financial market analysts around the world. He has an active interest in public policy. He served as senior economist on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers from 1976 to 1977, as a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers from 1989 to 1991. He was also a member of the Congressional Budget Office’s Panel of Economic Advisers from 1995 to 2001. Taylor served as a member of the California Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors from 1996-98 and 2005-10.
For four years from 2001 to 2005, Taylor served as Under Secretary of Treasury for International Affairs where he was responsible for currency markets, trade in financial services, foreign investment, international debt and development, and oversight of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. He was also responsible for coordinating financial policy with the G-7 countries, was chair of the OECD working party on international macroeconomics, and was a Member of the Board of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation. His book Global Financial Warriors: The Untold Story of International Finance in the Post-9/11 World chronicles his years as head of the international division at Treasury. His book Getting Off Track: How Government Actions and Interventions Caused, Prolonged, and Worsened the Financial Crisis was one of the first on the financial crisis, and he has since followed up with two books on preventing future crises, co-editing The Road ahead for the Fed and Ending Government Bailouts As We Know Them. His latest book is First Principles: Five Keys to Restoring Americas’ Prosperity, winner of the 2012 Hayek Prize.
In 2010, Taylor received the Bradley Prize from the Bradley Foundation and the Adam Smith Award from the National Association for Business Economics for his work as a researcher, public servant, and teacher. Taylor was awarded the Alexander Hamilton Award for his overall leadership at the U.S. Treasury, the Treasury Distinguished Service Award for designing and implementing the currency reforms in Iraq, and the Medal of the Republic of Uruguay for his work in resolving the 2002 financial crisis. He was awarded the George P. Shultz Distinguished Public Service Award at Stanford, the Hoagland Prize for excellence in undergraduate teaching and the Rhodes Prize for his high teaching ratings in Stanford’s introductory economics course. He also received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his research, and he is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society; he formerly served as vice president of the American Economic Association.
Previously, Taylor held positions of professor of economics at Princeton University and Columbia University. Taylor received a B.A. in economics summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1968 and a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University in 1973. -

Ryan Taylor, MD

BioDr. Taylor is a fellowship-trained neurologist and assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences, Memory Disorders Division. He provides patient care at the Stanford Center for Memory Disorders.
His areas of expertise include diagnosing and treating illnesses that impair thinking, memory, behavior, and speech. Dr. Taylor’s clinical focus includes Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body disease, frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia, posterior cortical atrophy, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, autoimmune encephalitis and other rapidly progressive dementias. He works with patients and families to provide diagnostic clarity and individualized treatment plans.
Dr. Taylor’s academic and research interests combine clinical and scientific understandings of dementia with a philosophical inquiry into the structure of conscious experience. His original clinical research includes diverse topics, such as advances in diagnosing Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and the clinical characterization of adult-onset hereditary dementias. Dr. Taylor has published work instrumental in identifying the potential role of fentanyl in a syndrome of sudden onset amnesia that emerged during the opioid crisis.
He has presented research at the American Academy of Neurology and published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences and Methods in Molecular Biology. He has also published a chapter on the diagnosis and treatment of frontotemporal dementia and was a reviewer for Neurocase.
Dr. Taylor is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. He has taught residents and medical students clinical skills, neuroanatomy, neuro-imaging, and other subjects. He also has delivered Grand Rounds presentations on dementia, epilepsy, and pediatric neurology. -

Clinical Associate Professor (By courtesy), NeurosurgeryBioA native of the Bay Area, Dr. Nick Telischak is a dual fellowship-trained neurointerventional surgeon and neuroradiologist at Stanford Health Care. With board certifications in radiology and neuroradiology, he serves as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Radiology, and, by courtesy of the Department of Neurosurgery, at Stanford School of Medicine.
Dr. Telischak specializes in diagnosing and treating artery disorders in the brain and spine, including brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVM), and dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF), and stroke. Dr. Telischak also specializes in venous disorders in the brain including idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). He also has a special interest in pulsatile tinnitus, a whooshing sound in the ears that occurs in rhythm with the heartbeat. Dr. Telischak also treats painful spinal (vertebral) fractures, spinal metastases (tumors resulting from cancer elsewhere in the body), and congenital vascular malformations (blood vessel abnormalities that are present at birth). He treats these conditions using minimally invasive, image-guided procedures and state-of-the-art technology.
Prior to joining Stanford Health Care, Dr. Telischak helped develop the Stroke Program at California Pacific Medical Center and Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, giving him a broad perspective on medical care systems within the Bay Area.
Dr. Telischak’s research focuses on:
• Identifying biomarkers to diagnose large vessel occlusion stroke (stroke in one of the large arteries in the brain)
• Noninvasive MRI techniques for diagnosing idiopathic intracranial hypertension (high pressure within the skull)
He is also the principal investigator for a study examining the efficacy of vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty for the treatment of painful vertebral compression fractures.
In addition, Dr. Telischak holds a master’s degree in bioengineering. He has worked with several companies pioneering new devices to treat brain aneurysms, vascular malformations, and strokes caused by blood clots, as well as new treatments for venous disorders in the brain caused by idiopathic intracranial hypertension.
Dr. Telischak has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles and has been invited to present locally, nationally, and internationally at meetings for the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery, American Society of Neuroradiology, and Jornada de Stroke in Asuncion, Paraguay, where he has served as visiting faculty. -

BioJoyce Teng, MD, PhD is a professor in dermatology at Stanford University. She is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital (LPCH) at Stanford and Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC). She received her medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 12 years. She is one of the 6 pediatric dermatologists practicing at LPCH and one of 72 at SHC who specialize in Dermatology. She sees patients with rare genetic disorders, birthmarks, vascular anomalies and a variety of inflammatory skin diseases. She is also an experienced pediatric dermatological surgeon. Her research interests are drug discovery and novel therapy for skin disorders.

BioDr. Valerie Teng is a board certified family physician with special interests in preventative medicine and women's health. Her experiences in caring for patients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension, have fueled her desire to partner with patients to enter healthier lifestyles. She is also passionate about providing comprehensive care to patients of all ages, including newborns and teens.
During her residency training, Dr. Teng explored many opportunities in medical education through the O’Connor-Stanford Leaders in Education Residency (OSLER) program. She is delighted to continue in medical education as a part of the faculty at Stanford Family Medicine. -
Stefano Testa, MD
Instructor, Medicine - Oncology
BioDr. Stefano Testa is a board-certified, fellowship-trained medical oncologist with Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical instructor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Testa specializes in treating patients with sarcomas and other solid tumors using cellular therapy approaches. He has expertise in adoptive T-cell therapies, including chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) and T-cell receptor (TCR) therapies.
As a physician-scientist, Dr. Testa focuses on developing next-generation cellular therapies for solid tumors, particularly sarcomas. His research goal is to identify targets for adoptive T-cell therapies in solid tumors, including soft tissue and bone sarcomas, and on novel synthetic biology approaches to enhance the effectiveness of T-cell therapies against solid tumors.
Dr. Testa has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading medical journals, including Immunity, Cancer Discovery, JAMA Network Open, Genome Medicine, and Biomacromolecules. He has presented his research at national and international scientific meetings, including the Connective Tissue Oncology Society Annual Meeting and the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer Annual Meeting.

Jeffrey Teuteberg

His research interests are in clinical outcomes in patients after transplant and mechanical support as well as novel approaches to immunosuppression. He has participated in many single-center and multi-institutional research studies and has published widely in the fields of transplant and mechanical support. He served as President of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation in 2018. -
Winifred Teuteberg

BioDr. Teuteberg completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago and a Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. She joined the faculty at Stanford in 2017 and currently sees patients as a part of the inpatient palliative care consult team at Stanford Healthcare.
She has been the clinical director or Stanford Medicine's implementation of the Ariadne Labs' Serious Illness Care Program since its inception in 2018. Her interests include communication skills training, leveraging predictive algorithms to identify patients who would most benefit from serious illness conversations, how to empower non-physician clinical team members to participate in this work, and best practice for EHR builds related to advance care planning. -

Dr. Tezcan is a medical oncologist and hematologist with over three decades of diverse experience in cancer management and research.
He is leading the clinical development of Droplet Biosciences' novel liquid biopsy technology, a first-in-class lymphatic fluid molecular residual disease assessment, overseeing the scientific and clinical development of the technology. With over three decades of direct patient care and clinical trial experience as a principal investigator and director, both in academia and private practice, he has a firsthand understanding of the unmet clinical needs of physicians and patients, as well as broad experience in clinical trial design and implementation.
He is also co-principal at Athea Oncology, guiding practices and hospitals in developing clinical trial programs and high-value real-world data collection and diagnostic companies in clinical development. He is also a reviewer of JCO Precision Medicine.
Before joining Athea Oncology and Droplet Biosciences, he was the co-founder of LexentBio, which was successfully acquired by Roche/FMI. He also served as Director of Translational Medicine at Genomic Health and as Vice President, leading oncology development at Counsyl, where he integrated science with clinical product development. He established the CA.RE.foundation, a cancer research foundation dedicated to enabling the execution of clinical trials across community oncology sites throughout the Northwest US. He has independently built multiple software tools to help oncologists navigate the practical realities of their daily work. -
Julie Ngoc Thai, MD, MPH

BioDr. Thai is a fellowship-trained specialist in geriatric medicine. She provides care at the Stanford Senior Care Clinic.
She completed her fellowship training at the University of California, San Francisco. She is board-certified in family medicine through the American Board of Family Medicine .
Dr. Thai earned her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She completed her residency in family medicine at McLaren Flint/Michigan State University College of Human Medicine where she served as chief resident.
She also holds a Master of Public Health degree from Columbia University.
Dr. Thai has a background in clinical and population health research. She recently received a grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation to study the role of motivational interviewing in smoking cessation.
She contributed to research in rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and ankylosing spondylitis in the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Thai was also an endourology research fellow in the Department of Urology at Mount Sinai Health System. Research focused on renal stone disease, clinical markers and outcomes, and testing and development of new technologies.
She has co-authored articles on topics such as caregivers’ communication with elders living with late-life disability, palliative care practices in diverse settings, and the social consequences of forgetfulness and Alzheimer’s disease. These articles appeared in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Journal of Palliative Medicine, Journal of Mental Health Aging, and other peer-reviewed journals
Dr. Thai is a member of the American Geriatrics Society, American Academy of Family Physicians, and California Academy of Family Physicians. She is also an inductee of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
She has volunteered with homeless shelters, women’s advocacy groups, Goodwill, the American Red Cross, and AmeriCorps.

Tristan Tham, MD

BioDr. Tristan Tham is an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) surgeon and Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Born and raised in Singapore, Dr. Tham earned his medical degree with honors from the Royal College of Surgeons, where he received the Norman Rae Gold Medal for academic excellence and thesis award. Following medical school, he began his career as a junior doctor at Singapore General Hospital, where he was honored with the ‘Heart of Gold’ Award for achieving the highest patient satisfaction ratings. He then pursued further research training at the New York Head & Neck Institute, where he was eventually promoted to Director of Patient-Oriented Research.
Dr. Tham completed his ENT surgery residency in New York City at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. During his residency, he was selected for membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
As an ENT surgeon, Dr. Tham treats a wide range of head and neck disorders, including sinus issues and obstructive sleep apnea, cancers of the sinus cavity and salivary glands, thyroid and parathyroid disorders, head and neck tumors, and chronic ear conditions. He prioritizes a personalized approach to care, working closely with patients to develop individualized treatment plans that address their unique needs.
Dr. Tham's contributions to the medical field extend beyond his clinical practice. He has authored over 200 publications, abstracts, and presentations. He has also served as Associate Editor for Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, the official journal of the American Academy of Otolaryngology.
Beyond his work in the clinic, Dr. Tham is committed to giving back through pro bono efforts in underserved regions around the world. He has participated in multiple medical missions abroad, reflecting his dedication to making a difference beyond his practice.
When he's not at work, Dr. Tham enjoys reading, weightlifting, and exploring the beautiful nature of Northern California with his wife and children. -
Suzanne Tharin

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe long-term goal of my research is the repair of damaged corticospinal circuitry. Therapeutic regeneration strategies will be informed by an understanding both of corticospinal motor neuron (CSMN) development and of events occurring in CSMN in the setting of spinal cord injury. MicroRNAs are small, non-coding RNAs that regulate the expression of “suites” of genes. The work in my lab seeks to identify microRNA controls over CSMN development and over the CSMN response to spinal cord injury.

Kate Therkelsen, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Adult Neurology
BioDr. Therkelsen is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neuro-oncologist with the Stanford Medicine Cancer Center and a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences.
She diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions including primary brain tumors and cancers of the central nervous system, metastatic disease to the brain and spinal cord, and neurologic complications of cancer. She prepares a personalized, comprehensive care plan for each patient she serves.
Dr. Therkelsen’s research interests include clinical trials of new therapeutics, as well as ways to reduce toxicities that some patients may experience when receiving cancer treatment. Her fellowship research projects included a study of survival and long-term function among patients treated for primary central nervous system lymphoma. She also received a pre-doctoral National Institutes of Health Intramural Research Training Award for her work with the Framingham Heart Study.
She has published in Current Treatment Options in Oncology and other peer-reviewed journals. She has presented to her peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including the annual meetings of the Society of Neuro-Oncology and of the American Academy of Neurology.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur current work has two branches. Branch #1 is building a quantitative and predictive understanding of how neutrophils initiate and complete NETosis. Branch #2 is identifying the molecular and biophysical mechanisms that regulate high deformability in neutrophils. These branches converge onto understanding and harnessing the impact of nuclear biophysics on immune cell functions to re-engineer neutrophils for improved health.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsCIF21 DIBBs: Building a Scalable Infrastructure for Data-Driven Discovery and Innovation in Education: Funded by the National Science Foundation.
In collaboration with Carnegie Mellon, MIT, and the University of Memphis, we are creating a community software infrastructure, called LearnSphere, which supports sharing, analysis, and collaboration across a wide variety of educational data. LearnSphere supports researchers as they improve their understanding of human learning. It also helps course developers and instructors improve teaching and learning through data-driven course redesign.
The Learning Engineering Initiative: EdHub. Funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative/Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
The EdHub project is a cross-sector initiative, to engineer the creation of a novel research and development hub in the Bay Area that is designed to integrate, by design, ongoing research in the Learning Sciences with ongoing approaches to enduring problems of practice within education.
Adaptable Learning Feedback for Instructors: The Open Analytics Research System (OARS). Funded by the Stanford VPTL Innovation Grant.
The activities and embedded assessments in online courseware provide support to students and generate fine-grained student learning data. The Open Analytic Research System (OARS) collects and models student learning data and and presents information to instructors in a dashboard to guide instruction and class activities.
Next Generation Courseware Challenge: A Partnership for Iterative Excellence in Online Courseware for College Learners. Funded by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The OLI statistics courseware was created as an open educational resource (OER) on, the now proprietary, CMU OLI platform. In moving to Stanford, I moved the courseware to Lagunita, Stanford’s OpenEdx platform so that it would once again be an OER and extended the capabilities of the Lagunita platform to support the OLI statistics course. In collaboration with multiple partner institutions, we have continued to expand and update the courseware and conducted several learning studies. We have conducted studies in "Mindset" with Carol Dweck's (Stanford Psychology) PERTS group. In collaboration with Emma Brunskill (Stanford Computer Science), we are implementing an adaptive problem solver that uses Bayesian optimization algorithms to automatically identify which items to include in a practice set, and how to adaptively select these items in order to maximize student performance on the specified set of learning objectives and skills. Additional RCT studies that we are currently conducting in the OLI statistics courseware at our partner institutions include a study on the impact of prompting and scaffolding learners to make strategic choices about their use of course resources; and a separate study that builds affect detectors into the courseware to test the impact of timing interventions to the affective as well as cognitive state of the learner. -
Sharika Thiranagama
Associate Professor of Anthropology
BioSharika Thiranagama's work has consistently explored how political mobilization and domestic life intersect, focusing on highly fraught contexts of violence, inequality, and intense political mobilization. This work and broader comparative theorization rests on understanding how people actually live together, often in highly fractious and unequal ways, situating these processes in specific historical formations of vernacular “privates” and “publics” in South Asia.
Her work is based in Sri Lanka and in Kerala, South India. In Sri Lanka, her primary research (In My Mother’s House: Civil War in Sri Lanka 2011) was on civil war, political violence, home, displacement, militarization, family particularly intergenerational and gendered relations in wartime and post war life. This work takes these themes through the lives of Sri Lankan Tamil and Sri Lankan Muslim minorities. Other work includes the history of railways, the BBC world service, masculinity, leadership and popular militancy, etc.
Her work in Kerala focuses on the long-lasting legacy on enslavement and caste in the lives on contemporary agricultural Dalit laboring families, examining caste, gender, household economies, house and neighborhood spaces through their inheritance and future affordances. Articles examine the house, public and private in India, inheritance as inequality, and caste and neighborliness.
Her future work will take an examination of inheritance, caste and family back to Sri Lanka for new fieldwork in Jaffna with Tamils and Muslims after Sri Lanka’s recent economic collapse and postwar caste conflicts. -

Lindsay Thomas, RN, MS, CNS

BioMs. Lindsay Thomas earned her BA in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley in 2003 and her RN and MS from UCSF in 2006 and 2009 respectively. She completed a Double Master’s in Cardiovascular Nursing and Genomics and is a board certified clinical nurse specialist in critical care nursing. She joined the Stanford Interventional Cardiology Team in 2011 where she has pioneered the advanced practice nursing role in the cath lab and been a leader in the development of the Left Atrial Appendage Closure program. She serves as adjunct faculty for the UCSF graduate nursing program and is the co-chair of the Northern California Chapter of the Preventative Cardiovascular Nurses Association. Lindsay specializes in treating and caring for patients with established coronary artery disease and cardiovascular risk factors; she strives to provide excellent patient care and education to optimize a heart healthy life style to promote wellness with use of medications and invasive procedures when life style alone is not enough to achieve desired results. When not working Lindsay is an outdoor and exercise enthusiast, who enjoys participating in various endurance activities and has completed several triathlons. She also enjoys reading and discussions with her book club, going to the theater, and spending quality time with her friends and family.

BioTainayah Thomas, PhD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. Her research focuses on primary care improvement and diabetes prevention and management among racially and ethnically diverse populations. Dr. Thomas's research seeks to leverage delivery science research methodology to promote the integration of evidence-based research into clinical practice. BioA global expert on water and natural resources, Barton “Buzz” Thompson focuses on how to improve resource management through legal, institutional, and technological innovation. He was the founding Perry L. McCarty Director of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, where he remains a Senior Fellow and directs the Water in the West program. He also has been a Senior Fellow (by courtesy) at Stanford’s Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies, and a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution. He founded the law school’s Environmental and Natural Resources Program. He also is a faculty member in Stanford’s Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER).
Professor Thompson served as Special Master for the United States Supreme Court in Montana v. Wyoming, an interstate water dispute involving the Yellowstone River system. He also is a former member of the Science Advisory Board of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. He chairs the boards of the Resources Legacy Fund and the Stanford Habitat Conservation Board, is a California trustee of The Nature Conservancy, and is a board member of the American Farmland Trust, the Sonoran Institute, and the Santa Lucia Conservancy.
Professor Thompson is of counsel to the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers, where he specializes in water resources and was a partner prior to joining Stanford Law School. He also serves as an advisor to a major impact investment fund. He was a law clerk to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist ’52 (BA ’48, MA ’48) of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge Joseph T. Sneed of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. -
Candice N. Thompson, MD, MSc, FACS
Clinical Assistant Professor, Surgery - General Surgery
BioDr. Thompson is a board-certified general surgeon and fellowship-trained breast surgical oncology. She is a clinical assistant professor of surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Medical Director for the Office of Cancer Health Equity. She is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Thompson clinical interests include treatment of women and men who have breast cancer, benign breast disease, genetic mutations, family history of breast cancer, or other breast cancer risk factors. Procedures performed by Dr. Thompson include lumpectomies (partial mastectomies) using oncoplastic techniques and hidden scar methods, skin- and nipple-sparing mastectomies, simple mastectomies with aesthetically flat closure, oncoplastic procedures, benign breast lesion excisions, axillary node dissections, and sentinel lymph node biopsies.
She completed a breast surgical oncology fellowship at Stanford University under the mentorship of one of the world’s foremost experts in the field. She completed her general surgery training at Georgetown University, where she was the co-administrative chief resident. She is passionate about equitable care and addressing healthcare disparities, especially in breast cancer.
Dr. Thompson works closely with medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, genetics, and other breast cancer specialists in a multidisciplinary setting to provide high quality, evidence-based, and individualized care. Dr. Thompson is a strong advocate for patient education and empowerment and strives to deliver compassionate care to patients and their families.
Her research has focused on Nipple Sparing Mastectomies, Community Engagement for Breast Cancer in the Black Community, Immune responses during breast cancer treatment, and prognostic role of Circulating Tumor DNA (ctDNA) in the management of breast cancer. She also has strong research interests in community engagement, health disparities, oncoplastic surgical options, and cancer biomarkers. She has delivered presentations on a wide range of topics related to breast cancer at national and regional meetings including NRG Oncology, ASBrS, ASC.
For her scholarship and research achievements, Dr. Thompson has won numerous honors and awards. She has earned the resident teaching award during her chief year at Georgetown. She was awarded the Stanford Cancer Institute Clinical Innovation Fund Grant for her work in educating the Black Community about Breast Health and Breast Cancer (2022). She was also awarded the prestigious NCI Early-Surgeon Scientist Program (ESSP) Award to support her early career as a surgeon scientist(2024). She also serves on the AAS Academic Advancement Committee, NRG Oncology Surgical Oncology Committee, NCCN Breast Screening and Diagnosis Panel, and TOUCH Black Breast Advisor for Pink Table Talk.
Dr. Thompson is a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS), Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS), Association of Women Surgeons (AWS), National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®), and American Medical Association (AMA).

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy current research focuses on use of technology to improve mental health of older persons and their family members. I have a strong interest in how cultural diversity impacts mental health access, services, and outcomes. I am currently involved in several international research and demonstration projects in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the health care system in Thailand as well as projects in the US - notably, with rural caregivers and those of Asian American ancestry.

John W. Thompson
Clinical Instructor, Adult Neurology
BioDr. Thompson is a physician-scientist and Clinical Instructor in the Division of Comprehensive Neurology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He cares for adults across the full range of neurologic conditions. Deeply aware of how these conditions can reshape a person’s life, he is committed to partnering with patients and their families to navigate diagnostic and treatment challenges. He has a particular interest in caring for patients with complex medical comorbidities and those transitioning from inpatient to outpatient settings. His other areas of focus include neuroimmunology and the prevention of chronic neurologic diseases such as stroke and dementia.
Dr. Thompson earned his medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA as part of the UCLA-Caltech Medical Scientist Training Program, where he received the Richard D. Walter Award for Excellence in Neurology. He completed his PhD in Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology at the California Institute of Technology, studying how protein glycosylation affects neuronal signaling and metabolism. He went on to complete his neurology residency at UCLA, where he designed computational methods to resolve dementia subtypes in an unbiased manner. At Stanford, his research focuses on the development of novel multiomics technologies to understand the genetic and molecular underpinnings of frontotemporal dementia and other neurodegenerative disorders. Beyond the clinic and the laboratory, Dr. Thompson is a passionate educator dedicated to mentoring medical students and residents. Across all his work, his overarching goal is to help patients better understand and confront neurologic disease through the translation of high-dimensional data into meaningful clinical insights. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Thompsons interests include psychosocial treatments for individuals with bipolar disorder and /or other serious mental illnesses; cognitive/behavioral therapy for late-life depression; intervention research with culturally diverse individuals with depression; and psychophysiological research on stress & coping.

Alan Eih Chih Thong
Clinical Associate Professor, Urology
BioDr. Thong is a surgeon specializing in urologic oncology. He has expertise in all aspects of prostate, kidney, bladder, and testicular cancer care, including endoscopic, robotic, and open surgery, and has a special interest in complex cases including: salvage surgery following radiation or chemotherapy, resection of locally advanced tumors, minimal access robotic surgery, and MRI-US fusion targeted biopsies. Dr. Thong is the first surgeon in northern California to utilize single port robotic assisted laparoscopic technology for both pelvic and retroperitoneal surgeries. He has won numerous awards including the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award, and has authored and co-authored publications on the treatment of urologic cancers.
