He thrives on connecting technology with people, from designing customer-centric services to mentoring young product managers. BioI'm interested in the marine nitrogen cycle, particularly in nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas that plays a key role in stratospheric ozone destruction. I'm focused on delineating nitrous oxide's accumulation (production-consumption) pathways in various oceanographic regions.

Veda Sunkara

BioVeda Sunkara (she/her) is an E-IPER PhD student interested in studying disaster adaptation approaches and equity in outcomes for flood-prone communities in the face of increasing extremes due to climate change. Prior to starting her PhD, she worked as a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Floodbase (formerly Cloud to Street), where she built machine learning algorithms to create flood maps from remotely-sensed imagery, in-situ sensors, and physics-based models for disaster planning and parametric flood insurance. She seeks to combine her earth observation and machine learning expertise with community-centered research to co-develop the data necessary to enable long term adaptation and resilience to flooding. She holds a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science from Brown University.

Dhruv Suri
Ph.D. Student in Energy Science and Engineering, admitted Spring 2023
BioDhruv Suri, from Delhi, India is pursuing a master’s degree in energy resources engineering at Stanford School of Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences. He graduated from the Manipal Institute of Technology in India with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering. Dhruv aspires to work at the nexus of energy and climate, and help vulnerable communities overcome access barriers in India and other developing countries. He has worked as a visiting student researcher at the MIT D-Lab, and as a research assistant in Serbia, Singapore and the Netherlands. Dhruv is the co-founder of Candela Energy, a last-mile distribution organization providing rural villages access to life-improving products and has been awarded by ETH Student Project House in Switzerland and EarthTech in Australia.

Alaa Taha

BioAlaa completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Western University and is an MD student at Stanford. Alaa's research integrates machine learning, image analysis, and anatomical coordinate systems for brain mapping and deep brain stimulation. Alaa is passionate about global health equity, open-source medical software, and advancing stereotactic neurosurgery through interpretable and reproducible methods.

Megumi E. Takada
Ph.D. Student in Education, admitted Autumn 2021
BioMegumi Takada is a doctoral candidate in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. Her research centers around children’s literacy experiences in the elementary school years, with a special interest in designing literacy instruction that promotes student agency and school belonging. Her most recent work focuses on translingual and multimodal writing, working with elementary school teachers to co-design writing instruction that leverages multilingual students' everyday language and literacy practices. Her work is driven by her former experience as a public school teacher in South Korea and Seattle, as well as her transnational, translingual experiences growing up cross-culturally in California and Japan. She is a recipient of the Fulbright teaching fellowship and graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in neuroscience and elementary teaching credentials.
スタンフォード大学教育学部で博士課程の研究を進めています。研究は主に小学生の読み書き・バイリンガル教育についてです。デザイン思考を取り入れて近所の公立小学校と連携しながら研究をしています。読み書きの授業に生徒達のアイデンティティ・言語・文化などを取り込んで、子どもたちにとって学校が居心地の良い場所、興味を持って楽しく勉強できる場所にしていこうと思っています。スタンフォード大学入学前は韓国で英語の先生として働き、その後はシアトルの公立小学校で１年生の担任をしていました。主にアメリカで生まれ育ちましたが、高校時代は関西で過ごしました。今後もこのような研究を通して、バイリンガル・マルチリンガルの子ども達、日本とアメリカを行き来する子ども達を支援できたらと思っています。
