Medical Director--Vapahcs Medical Surgical Icu, Medicine - Med/Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care MedicineBioMy training is in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, and I've been blessed to be part of the care of many patients and their families. My clinical research interests have been in the field of critical care medicine and ARDS, a type of acute respiratory failure seen commonly in patients with severe injuries or illnesses. I also have a particular interest in evaluating and improving processes for care. Issues like standardizing processes to improve reliability, improving safety of handoffs, and exploring ways to teach "roundsmanship" (the process of discussing patients' care with a group of providers) are current interests of mine.
The future of medical care depends on training the next generation of providers, and I'm thankful to be part of training this next generation. Teaching at the bedside or in formal classroom settings gives me great joy and satisfaction. I'm delighted to work with a great, multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists. I add to that team our patients and families, for it truly takes a team to provide care that is both excellent and compassionate. -
Leona Neftaliem

BioLeona is pursuing a PhD in the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER) at Stanford University. Her current research focuses on improving tree detection methods, understanding human migration patterns in response to environmental and socioeconomic pressures, and assessing drivers of urban air quality. She approaches these topics by integrating remote sensing, quantitative surveys, and innovative environmental engineering techniques at different scales and in different cities.
Before Stanford, Leona worked as a research technician at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, where she designed technologically innovative climate change experiments. She is a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow, and a Stanford School of Sustainability Dean’s Graduate Scholar. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur labaratory focuses on the study of immune recognition by T and NK cells with special emphasis on graft vs host disease and graft vs tumor reactions. We utilize both murine and human systems in an effort to enhance graft vs tumor reactions while controlling graft vs host disease. We have developed bioluminescence models in collaboration with the Contag laboratory to study the trafficking of immune effector cells with a special emphasis on NK, T and regulatory T cells.

Shikha Nehra

BioShikha Nehra is a PhD Candidate in Anthropology at Stanford University. She is conducting dissertation research on the emerging idioms and forms of political belonging in India's north-eastern state of Assam. Her ethnographic and archival research in Assam explores questions of political membership for Muslim communities through its sociocultural terrain, tracing the contribution of different ethnic and literary associations in claiming recognition as indigenous or legal citizens through complex registers of language, identity and belonging. Her broader fields of interest include nationalism, populism, state and sovereignty, bureaucracy, citizenship, subjectivity, and identity-formation.

Hesam N. Motlagh

BioHesam is passionate about translating basic science discoveries into products that have a significant impact on society. He is Chief of Staff at Khosla Ventures where he works with Vinod Khosla on strategic projects for the firm and advises portfolio companies on fundraising, product, business development, marketing, and general strategy.
Currently, Hesam is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Structural Biology at Stanford Medicine and a Fellow in The Johns Hopkins Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health, and the Study of Business Enterprise where he is editor of the Studies in Applied Finance. Previously, he worked on financial and corporate strategy at Seer Biosciences and was a Pear Fellow at Pear VC. Before Seer, he was a quant at an investment management firm after being a molecular and computational biophysicist for almost a decade.
Hesam has many peer-reviewed publications including a review article that was highlighted on the cover of Nature. He completed his MBA at Stanford Graduate School of Business, obtained his PhD from the Program in Molecular Biophysics at The Johns Hopkins University under the supervision of Vincent Hilser, and obtained his undergraduate degrees from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. -
Liesl Nel-Themaat, PhD, HCLD, MBA

BioDr. Nel-Themaat has been in the field of assisted reproduction for more than 20 years, with the past 11 years in clinical IVF. She possesses a unique combination of a strong academic background, broad technical experience and extensive leadership, and management training. Through a multi-dimensional approach, she has helped to improve patient care and outcomes in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).
Dr. Nel-Themaat was most recently employed as the Regional IVF Lab Director for Shady Grove Fertility in Colorado and served as the IVF Lab Director at University of Colorado Advanced Reproductive Medicine. She received her PhD from LSU, Baton Rouge and recently completed an Executive Masters of Business Administration program at the University of Denver.
Her goal is to advance the field “by building strong, high performing lab teams, by carefully evaluating and adapting appropriately to industry trends, by training and educating the current and next generations, and by participating in collaborative research that enhances our understanding of reproduction.”
In her free time, Dr. Nel-Themaat loves to spend time with her husband and two children, preferably in nature. With them, she enjoys skiing, hiking, biking, swimming and anything nature has to offer. She likes to cook out and introduce our American friends to South African cuisine, especially a “braai,” which is their version of a BBQ. During school holidays, she likes to visit family in South Africa, go on safari and enjoy the beautiful beaches. Dr. Nel-Themaat enjoys jamming on the piano, guitar, drums and microphone with her family. She also considers herself very competitive and loves playing and watching sports or playing board games. -

BioA distinguished scholar of American culture, Alexander Nemerov explores our connection to the past and the power of the humanities to shape our lives. Through his empathetic, intuitive research and close readings of history, philosophy, and poetry, Nemerov reveals art as a source of emotional truth and considers its ethical demands upon us in our moment. Revered for his breadth of scholarship and celebrated for his eloquent public speaking, Nemerov inspires audiences with his belief in the affirming and transfiguring force of art.
An instinctive, nuanced author, Nemerov’s most recent book is The Forest: A Fable of America in the 1830s presenting tales of a visionary experience in the last years of America as a heavily forested land. His conjuring of a lost world of shade and sun has been praised by Annie Proulx ("deeply beautiful”, “astonishingly tender”, “one of the richest books ever to come my way") and Edmund de Waal (“moving and shocking and beautiful, an extraordinary achievement”).
Previous titles by Nemerov have gained further recognition: Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York was short-listed for the 2021 National Book Critics Circle Prize in Biography; Summoning Pearl Harbor, was praised by the novelist Ali Smith as "a unifying and liberating meditation”; Soulmaker: The Times of Lewis Hine, was short-listed for the Marfield Prize, a national award in arts writing; Wartime Kiss: Visions of the Moment in the 1940s was named one of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles in 2013; Acting in the Night: Macbeth and the Places of the Civil War was a Choice Outstanding Academic Book; Icons of Grief: Val Lewton and 1940s America was praised by The New York Review of Books as "superbly original." Nemerov’s initial books include Silent Dialogues: Diane Arbus and Howard Nemerov, a meditation on his father, the poet Howard Nemerov, and his aunt, the photographer Diane Arbus; The Body of Raphaelle Peale: Still Life and Selfhood, 1812-1824; and Frederic Remington and Turn-of-the-Century America.
Nemerov, an engaging, eloquent speaker, gave the 2007 Andrew Wyeth Lecture at the National Gallery of Art, and in 2017, he delivered the 66th Andrew W. Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery of Art, becoming the first scholar to deliver them with a focus on American art. He has also published two exhibition catalogues: To Make a World: George Ault and 1940s America, the companion to a National Museum of American Art exhibition of that name and Ralph Eugene Meatyard: American Mystic.
After receiving his B.A. in Art History and English with Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors from the University of Vermont and his Ph.D. in the History of Art from Yale University, Nemerov began his teaching career at Stanford University in 1992. Returning to Yale in 2001, Nemerov chaired the Department of the History of Art from 2009 to 2012 and in 2010 was named to the Vincent Scully Professorship. Nemerov returned to Stanford in 2012 as the Carl and Marilynn Thoma Provostial Professor in the Arts and Humanities and served as chair of the Department of Art and Art History from 2015 to 2021. The Stanford Daily has named him one of the university's top ten professors. -
Dale Nesbitt
Adjunct Lecturer, Management Science and Engineering
BioDr. Nesbitt has been teaching MSE 252 (Decision Analysis), MSE 352 (Professional Decision Analysis), MSE 353 (Advanced Decision Analysis), MSE 299 (Coercion Free Social Systems), and MSE 254 (The Ethical Analyst) in the department. He has practiced and taught in these fields, and economic modeling, for several decades.
Dr. Nesbitt has been researching Bayesian statistical analysis, ethics, and ethical theories in a general setting (i.e., personal ethics not necessarily associated with any particular field or discipline). His research focuses on ethics per se, not ethics related to a specific technology, commodity, discipline, area, or practice. He is currently focused on ethics from a socio-personal perspective, one in which coercion is minimized or sanctioned, one that blends the utilitarian approach of Harsanyi, Mill, Bentham, and others with the uncoerced game theory approach of Nash and Harsanyi. The objective of this research is to give a roadmap for people (and groups) to behave ethically and do good and also to be able to consider ethical decision making under uncertainty.
Dr. Nesbitt is completing a monograph on Bayesian Linear Regression intended to unify key dimensions of the field around a pure Bayesian probabilistic viewpoint, what he calls “unabashed Bayes.” The monograph is scheduled for completion in 2022. Dr. Nesbitt continues to research and practice Bayesian regression and probabilistic analysis, recently applying it to disciplines such as automobile selection, jet technology and fuel projection, and petrochemicals demand.
Dr. Nesbitt has focused for many years on building economic-environmental models of the key energy commodities—oil and refined products, natural gas, petrochemicals, automobiles, electric power generation, natural gas and electricity storage, renewable energy, environmental emissions and remediation, and demand/emission. His models and work in the field are well known, extending the classical economic equilibrium approach.
Dr. Nesbitt has worked and published in the field of semi-Markovian Decision Problems (the area of his thesis at Stanford), energy economics, cartels and monopolies, methods for modeling markets, Bayesian statistics, and free (meaning uncoerced) social systems.
