Current Research and Scholarly InterestsQuality improvement efforts seek to make medical care the best it can be rather than merely good enough to avoid censure. Focus on improving the average performance usually produces more net benefit than eliminating outliers, often by simplification, standardization, and specification. We have worked with electronic medication monitors, clinical databases, and computerized order entry systems for better clinical outcomes and trained clinicians for professionalism and accountability.

Tope Rude, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Urology
BioDr. Rude is a board-certified, fellowship-trained urologist and pelvic reconstructive surgeon with Stanford Health Care Pelvic Health Center and the Stanford Urology Clinic. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Urology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Rude specializes in pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. She is skilled in male and female genitourinary (urinary tract and reproductive organ) reconstruction, complex voiding dysfunction (issues with urinating), and neurourology (bladder problems related to spinal injuries and neurological disorders). She offers the full spectrum of care for pelvic organ prolapse, customized for the individual patient, and including vaginal surgery, robot assisted surgery, mesh augmented repairs, hysterectomy and obliterative procedures. She also offers broad surgical options for urethral reconstruction, including novel minimally invasive techniques, open repair with graft augmentation, and robot assisted repairs. Robotic approaches to care for distal ureteral stricture disease, neurogenic bladder and urinary fistula allow her to provide excellent outcomes for patients.
Her research interests include improving patient-reported outcomes after pelvic organ prolapse surgery, as well as the medical and surgical management of neurogenic (nervous system based) bladder and complex voiding dysfunction. She has also studied the interaction between race and prostate cancer treatment among the veteran population. Her active research endeavors include clinical trial of a novel implanted peripheral neuromodulation device for urgency incontinence and multi-center studies of voiding dysfunction.
Dr. Rude has received numerous awards, including winning first place in the socioeconomic category of the American Urologic Association’s (AUA) New York Section Annual Valentine Essay Contest. She also won best presentation at AUA’s Veteran Affairs Forum. Dr. Rude received the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) Chemodenervation Grant and the National Institutes of Health/National Medical Association Travel Award.
Dr. Rude has published in several peer-reviewed journals, including Cancer, The Journal of Urology, and Urology. She has delivered presentations at the annual meetings of AUA and SUFU. In addition, she has presented at the World Congress of Endourology and Uro-Technology.
Dr. Rude is a member of AUA and SUFU. She is awas an inaugural fellow of the Well Black Woman Institute, which is part of The Foundation for Black Women’s Wellness in Madison, Wisconsin. -
Uta Ruett
Senior Staff Scientist, Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource
BioUta Ruett is an expert in high-energy x-ray diffraction. Her research is dedicated to developing methods and instrumentation for in situ and operando structural analysis at x-ray user facilities. Her scientific interests cover a wide range of diffraction applications, including solid-state physics, synthesis of new materials, catalysis, and electrochemistry. In recent years, her primary focus has been on the structural analysis of disordered thin films and interfaces.
Uta Ruett received her diploma in Physics from the University of Hamburg, Germany, in 1993, and her Ph.D. in Physics from the same institution in 1996. She began her postdoctoral research at Northern Illinois University before becoming an assistant scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. She then worked at the Max-Planck-Institute for Solid-State Physics in Stuttgart, Germany, before joining DESY in Hamburg, Germany, as a staff scientist and later as a Beamline Manager at PETRA III, DESY, Germany. In 2017, Uta Ruett accepted the position of group leader at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), where she oversaw the development and research program of five high-energy x-ray scattering beamlines. In 2024, she joined SLAC as a senior advisor for future projects at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL). -
Daniel Rugar

Visiting Scholar, Ginzton, E.L. LaboratoryBioDaniel Rugar is visiting scholar at Stanford University working with Professor Amir Safavi-Naeini. He retired from IBM Research in 2024, finishing as Principal Research Scientist and Manager of Exploratory Quantum Devices at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California. He previously served as an IBM Distinguished Research Staff Member and Manager of Nanoscale Studies.
Dr. Rugar received his B.A. in Physics from Pomona College in 1975 and his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University in 1982. He was co-recipient of the Günther Laukien Prize for the development of magnetic resonance force microscopy and was awarded the Cozzarelli Prize from the Proceedings of the National Acacademy of Sciences. He has served as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Magnetic Society. More recently, he was awarded the 2022 APS Keithley Award in Measurement Science. Dr. Rugar is a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). -
Perisa Ruhi-Williams, MD

Staff, Surgery - General SurgeryBioDr. Perisa Ruhi-Williams is a board-certified General Surgeon practicing at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. Her clinical practice is centered on utilizing robotic-assisted techniques for metabolic/bariatric surgery and hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction.
She graduated as an Echols Scholar with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Virginia. She earned her MD from the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and completed her General Surgery residency at the University of California, Irvine. While in residency, she served as the Chief Resident in Quality and Patient Safety at the VA Long Beach Medical Center. She subsequently completed an advanced fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery, Bariatrics, and Foregut Surgery at Stanford Health Care.
Dr. Ruhi-Williams is passionate about advancing surgical education and the wellness of surgical trainees. In addition to her clinical roles, she serves as the Site Director for the Surgery Core Clerkship at VA Palo Alto and Assistant Site Director for the General Surgery Residency Program at VA Palo Alto. -
Brian Ruhle, MD, MS

BioDr. Brian Ruhle is a board-certified surgeon with dual-fellowship training in minimally invasive bariatric (weight loss) surgery and endocrine surgery. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Ruhle specializes in bariatric surgery, foregut (upper digestive tract) surgery, adrenal surgery, and abdominal wall reconstruction. He uses leading-edge laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques to help patients achieve sustainable weight loss and improve obesity-related health conditions. His expertise in advanced minimally invasive procedures offers patients significant benefits, including faster recoveries, reduced pain, and shorter hospital stays.
Dr. Ruhle’s research interests span a wide range of topics in metabolic and bariatric surgery. His studies have explored combination therapies for managing obesity, improvements in screening and treating endocrine disorders, and optimizing outcomes in thyroid and parathyroid surgeries. He has published his findings in many peer-reviewed journals, including Surgery, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Ruhle has presented at prominent national conferences, including the annual meetings of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress. His presentations have discussed using GLP-1 receptor agonists (weight loss medications that help regulate blood sugar and reduce appetite) before and after bariatric surgery. He has also addressed improving screening protocols for hyperaldosteronism (high blood pressure caused by excess production of the hormone aldosterone by the adrenal gland).
Dr. Ruhle is a member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. -

Alejandra Ruiz
Postdoctoral Scholar, General Surgery
BioDr. Alejandra Ruiz is a physician-scientist working at the intersection of clinical medicine, health services research, and community-engaged intervention design. Based on her clinical experience in high-complexity settings, she works to optimize integrative care models that address both physical and mental health needs.
She is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and General Surgery, where she examines structural barriers to care among underserved populations and develops pathways to improve access and care delivery. Her work is grounded in community-based participatory research, through which she designs, implements, and evaluates culturally responsive interventions. Dr. Ruiz is committed to advancing equitable, sustainable models of care that improve access, engagement, and patient outcomes. -
Maria Ruiz-Primo
Associate Professor of Education
BioMaria Araceli Ruiz-Primo is an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Education, Stanford University. Her work, funded mainly by the National Science Foundation and the Institute of Education Sciences, examines assessment practices and the assessment of student learning both in the classroom and in large-scale assessment programs. Her publications address the development and evaluation of multiple learning assessment strategies, including concept maps and students’ science notebooks, and the study of teachers’ informal and formal formative assessment practices, such as the use of assessment conversations and embedded assessments. She also has conducted research on the development and evaluation of assessments that are instructionally sensitive and instruments intended to measure teachers’ formative assessment practices. Recently she has worked on the analysis of state testing programs. She was co-editor of a special issue on assessment in the Journal of Research in Science Teaching and a special issue on classroom assessment in the Journal of Educational Measurement. She has published in Science, Educational Measurement: Issues and Practices, the Journal of Research in Science Teaching, and other major technical educational research journals.

Cristin Runfola
Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Runfola's research focuses on the epidemiology of dysregulated eating and weight concerns in undeserved populations and her primary interest is in developing and testing the efficacy of clinical interventions designed to improve outcome for eating disorders.
With support from GFED, Dr. Runfola adapted the Uniting Couples in the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa (UCAN) therapy manual for couples in which one or both members have binge-eating disorder (UNITE) and recently completed pilot testing on this treatment. She is in the process of expanding this treatment for all couples affected by binge eating, and is submitting a grant to fund future work testing efficacy. -
Stephen Ruoss

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe have an active collaborative project examining basic and clinical aspects of non-tuberculous mycobacterial lung infection in non-immune compromised adults. Studies have examined possible cellular immune mechanisms for increased susceptibility to these infections, and are also investigating aspects of optimal diagnosis and treatment. In addition, a clinical and translational research program is investigating the causes and genetic factors underlying the evolution of bronchiectasis.

Michal Ruprecht
Affiliate, Senior Associate Dean for Global Health
BioMichal Ruprecht is a health journalist and fourth-year medical student at Wayne State University School of Medicine. He is the 2025 AAAS Mass Media Fellow at NPR and the Stanford University School of Medicine Global Health Media Fellow. He will join the Journalism Program this fall as part of the master's cohort, followed by an internship at CNN Health.
He is particularly interested in how disruptive medical journalism improves scientific and medical understanding. He previously interned at ABC News, MedPage Today and the American Public Health Association.
At ABC News, he led coverage of maternal mortality among Black women, childhood bereavement and gun violence. While at MedPage, he was the first reporter to cover Stanford’s incoming class of surgery residents, highlighting the attention they received for being nearly all women. He also published an investigation into the widespread culture of piracy among medical students.
Prior to that, Michal was a beat reporter, assistant editor and investigative reporter for The Michigan Daily, the University of Michigan’s independent daily student newspaper. At The Daily, he spearheaded a seven-month investigation into the culture of silence among student researchers and led the paper’s research beat.
Beyond reporting, Michal was an Association of Health Care Journalists American Cities Health Journalism Fellow and serves on the Society of Professional Journalists Student Advisory Board. He is also a member of the Association of Health Care Journalists Membership Committee and was a STAT News Summit Fellow.
His research explores interventions rooted in equity and inclusion to drive positive change in underserved communities.
Michal graduated with honors and a B.S. in neuroscience from the University of Michigan in 2022, where he leveraged community action and social change to partner with individuals affected by the Flint water crisis. He wrote his senior thesis on a membrane protein and created three ceramic sculptures of the channel.
Michal is a member of the Arnold P. Gold Humanism Honor Society. He serves on the boards of the Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and Riley’s Way Foundation.

He works on translating cutting-edge AI research into applied, responsible, and deployable AI solutions for global enterprises in different domains, building durable bridges between Stanford scholars and industry researchers via research collaborations and executive education. As a research scientist, Ahmad's own research focuses on rigorous uncertainty quantification methods for trustworthy AI/ML models and systems. Previously, he held R&D roles at Sandia National Labs, Northrop Grumman, UC Davis, UT Austin, and Cisco. Christopher John Russell
Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Hospital Medicine)
BioDr. Russell is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine and a board-certified academic pediatric hospitalist at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. His clinical responsibilities include caring for children hospitalized for a variety of illnesses. His research focuses on developing evidence-based care for hospitalized children with medical complexity, including acute respiratory infections (such as pneumonia and bacterial tracheitis). His research efforts have been recognized through receipt of the University of Southern California’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s KL2 Mentored Research Career Development Award (2014-16), the Academic Pediatric Association’s Young Investigator Award (2015-16), the NIH Loan Repayment Program (2017-2021) and a large grant from the Gerber Foundation (2020-2022). In August 2021, he received a five-year R01 award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to study bacterial respiratory infections in children with tracheostomy. Outside of his clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Russell focuses on research mentorship of medical students, pediatric residents, and pediatric hospital medicine fellows as well as improving representation of underrepresented minorities in medicine throughout the continuum of physician training. Dr. Russell completed a term as the chair of the Academic Pediatric Association’s Membership, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee (2022-2025) and is on the Executive Committee for the Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings research network. Dr. Russell is active in the AAP and currently serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Hospital Pediatrics.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe use chemical tools to decipher the roles of key signaling networks in choanoflagellates, single-celled organisms that are the closest living relatives of animals. Choanoflagellates produce molecular signals essential for intercellular communication in animals and the presence of these molecules in choanoflagellates suggests that signaling components needed to communicate between cells is evolutionarily ancient. We aim to uncover new understanding of animal development, physiology and disease.
