Leif Wenar

BioLeif Wenar is a political philosopher. After receiving his AB at Stanford, he earned his PhD at Harvard, worked in Britain, and returned to Stanford in 2020.
He is the author of Blood Oil: Tyrants, Violence, and the Rules that Run the World and the author-meets-critics volume Beyond Blood Oil: Philosophy, Policy, and the Future. He is also the author of the entries for ‘John Rawls’ and ‘Rights’ in The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. His articles have appeared in Mind, Analysis, Philosophy & Public Affairs, Ethics, The Journal of Political Philosophy, The Columbia Law Review, and The Philosopher’s Annual. He co-edited Giving Well: The Ethics of Philanthropy, as well as an autobiographical volume by the economist FA Hayek.
He has been a Visiting Professor at the Stanford Center on Ethics and Society, a fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, the William H. Bonsall Visiting Professor in the Stanford Philosophy Department, a Laurance S. Rockefeller Fellow and a Visiting Professor at Princeton’s University Center for Human Values, a Visiting Professor at the Princeton Department of Politics, a Fellow of the Program on Justice and the World Economy at the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs, a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Ethics and Public Affairs at The Murphy Institute of Political Economy, and a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University School of Philosophy.
His public writing has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Foreign Affairs, and the playbill for the White Light Festival at Lincoln Center. In London, he served for several years on the Mayor’s Policing Ethics Panel, which advises the Mayor and the Metropolitan Police on issues such as digital surveillance and the use of force.

BioMy diving career started by surfing and snorkeling in Mexico with my family at a young age. I became a NAUI Divemaster and lived in Roatan Honduras. I later moved to Arlington Texas where I became a NAUI Instructor at University of Texas at Arlington. Later I moved to Panama City Florida and worked at Florida State University as the Diving Safety Officer and Underwater Crime Scene Investigation Instructor. I logged over 2500 dives in the North Florida waters from the Gulf of Mexico to the freshwater caves. It is my dream to make diving accessible to as many people as possible so they can share my love for the underwater world.

Kirsti Weng Elder MD/MPH
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Weng is the Section Chief of General Primary Care. She has over 25 years of experience caring for patients in primary care, urgent care and in the hospital. She is also a teacher of students and residents. As a leader in primary care re-design, she is passionate about practicing patient-centered medicine. She is a an advocate of Mindfulness Self-compassion to develop equanimity. She practices with an emphasis on musculoskeletal care as she feels fitness is the foundation of wellness. She is a leader in organizational change and physician management. She supports community health and care for the underserved. Outside of work she enjoys biking, reading and spending time with her 8 children.

Margaret Weng
Postdoctoral Scholar, Earth System Science
BioMaggie Weng is a NASA postdoctoral fellow in the Dekas lab at Stanford University. Her research focuses on understanding molybdenum availability and uptake strategies at deep-sea methane seeps. She uses culture-independent techniques including metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and stable isotope probing to understand whole-community dynamics. She earned her PhD from Georgetown University in 2024 with Dr. Sarah Stewart Johnson, where her research focused on microbes in hypersaline environments, and her bachelor's degree in 2019 from Washington University in St. Louis. She is interested in microbial persistence at the edge of possibility, including extreme environments and polluted sites, and how microbial communities contribute to bioremediation and ecosystem stability. She always says yes to fieldwork and as a consequence has found herself in the Atacama Desert, Kerlingarfjöll, Iceland, and Western Australia as well as a commercial salt factory in San Diego, CA. When not in the lab she is an avid writer, hiker and knitter. Her fiction and nonfiction writing have appeared in The Los Angeles Review and Northern Woodlands magazine. When out in the woods, she appreciates a good biofilm almost as much as a good view.

Wen-Kai Weng, MD, PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research interest is on immunotherapy (including allogeneic transplant) of cancer. I have studies the mechanism of monoclonal antibody therapy in lymphoma patients and am currently working on designing new strategy to enhance the clinical efficacy of antibody therapy by infusing expanded NK cells. I am also interested in using tumor vaccine along with hematopoietic cell transplant.

BioKelly Wentzlof joins CERAS as a Research Coordinator in the Brain Development and Education Lab. Kelly will work with current lab members on recruiting, screening, and scheduling research participants as well as analyzing obtained data. Before coming to Stanford, Kelly graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Statistics. She is excited to expand both skillsets at Stanford University in Dr. Jason Yeatman's lab.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsFibrotic diseases kill more people than cancer in this country and worldwide. We believe that scar-forming cells called fibroblasts are at the core of the fibrotic response in parenchymal organ fibrosis in the lung, liver, skin, bone marrow and tumor stroma. At the cellular level we think of fibrosis as a step wise process which implicates inflammation and fibrosis. We seek to identify new effective immune therapy targets to treat fibrotic diseases.

Corinne Elizabeth Wertz

BioCorinne Wertz, AGACNP-BC, a native to Ohio, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Minor in Spanish from Ohio University in 2004. She then completed an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Ursuline College. For over eight years, Corinne worked as a registered nurse in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. At UHCMC she trained many new nurses, became an Advanced Clinical Nurse, participated in multiple local and national nursing chapters, as well as worked on call for Interventional Radiology. After completing a Master of Science in Nursing degree from Kent State University and obtaining her Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification in 2015, Corinne moved to San Diego to begin her career as a Neurosurgical Nurse Practitioner. She worked for a private practice at Scripps La Jolla, Scripps Encintas, and Scripps Mercy as a Registered Nurse First Assist in the operating room, on call, and in the outpatient clinic. After almost 14 years of neurosurgical experience, she continued her nurse practitioner career by becoming a member of the inpatient neurosurgical team at Stanford Health Care.

Philipp Wesp
Postdoctoral Scholar, Radiology
BioI am a postdoctoral researcher investigating interpretable machine learning (ML) and large language model (LLM) applications in clinical radiology. My current research focuses on two complementary areas: understanding what human-interpretable concepts self-supervised vision foundation models learn through mechanistic interpretability techniques like sparse autoencoders, and developing LLM-based systems, including agentic workflows and retrieval augmented generation (RAG) architectures, that leverage unstructured hospital data to improve radiological workflows. I earned my PhD from LMU Munich, where I focused on clinically motivated machine learning applications in medical imaging in the Department of Radiology.
My work is partially funded by a Walter Benjamin Fellowship from the DFG (German Research Foundation).
