Karlene Cimprich

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsGenomic instability contributes to many diseases, but it also underlies many natural processes. The Cimprich lab is focused on understanding how mammalian cells maintain genomic stability in the context of DNA replication stress and DNA damage. We are interested in the molecular mechanisms underlying the cellular response to replication stress and DNA damage as well as the links between DNA damage and replication stress to human disease.

Andrea Cipriano
Instructor, Obstetrics & Gynecology - Reproductive Biology
BioDr Andrea Cipriano is an instructor at the Stem Cell Institute and at the Ob/Gyn department at Stanford School of medicine. Since the beginning of his career he was driven by a deep interest in the complexities of life emerging from just a single cell, harboring all the instructions to produce a fully functional organism. His academic journey began with a Bachelor's in Biotechnology and progressed to a Master's in Genomic Biotechnology, where he delved into the intricate world of RNA. During his PhD, Andrea focused on long non-coding RNAs and their pivotal role in cell differentiation, a topic that continues to fascinate him in his current research. He works in the Sebastiano lab, and he is directing several projects, including studying the transcription factor TBX1 during development of the Pharyngeal endoderm, and exploring the impact of time on Chromatin Structure, particularly in the context of aging and its potential reversal. As an instructor, Andrea has been teaching for 4 years at the intensive CIRM stem cell class biology course. Teaching is a big passion that fuels his academic pursuits. His dedication to education stems from a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of knowledge, which is what initially propelled him into the academic world.

Robin Cisco, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Surgery - General Surgery
BioDr. Robin Cisco is a board certified general surgeon and fellowship-trained endocrine surgeon. She specializes in surgery of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands and has expertise in lymph node dissection for thyroid cancer. Dr Cisco received her medical degree at Duke University before moving to Stanford for general surgery residency. During her residency, she completed a two-year research fellowship in surgical oncology, with a focus on cancer immunology.
After residency, she completed an endocrine surgery fellowship with the internationally recognized UCSF Division of Endocrine Surgery. She is the author of multiple publications related to endocrine surgery and surgical oncology and has an interest in minimally invasive approaches to thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery. She is currently the Physician Leader of Stanford's Endocrine Oncology Cancer Care Program (CCP).
Dr. Cisco focuses on providing outstanding surgical care in an environment that is supportive of her patients and their families. She enjoys patient education and preoperative counseling, and seeks to lessen the anxiety that often comes with a recommendation for surgery. She currently sees patients both in San Jose at Stanford's Cancer Center South Bay and in Palo Alto in the Endocrine Oncology and Surgery clinic. -

My approach to providing care is a collaborative one: my patients are individually unique and special, and their care should be tailored to be the best fit for them.
Prior to joining the Stanford faculty, I completed a fellowship in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, From an academic standpoint, my current research focuses include: Gynecologic care for Oncology Survivors including Onco-Fertility and vulvovaginal graft-versus-host disease; gynecologic care of patients with Anorectal Malformations; Differences of Sex Development, Intersex conditions, and reproductive tract differences; and surgical care in pediatric gynecology. -

Daniel Clark, MD, MPH

Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatrics - CardiologyBioDr. Clark is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiologist with the Adult Congenital Heart Program at Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical assistant professor with dual appointments in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology, Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Clark specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and the management of congenital and acquired heart disease in children. His clinical focus involves the combined use of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and other imaging techniques to evaluate patients with known or suspected cardiovascular disease. Dr. Clark’s extensive training and experience with these techniques include multiple fellowships in adult cardiology, cardiovascular imaging, and ACHD.
Dr. Clark is currently a co-investigator on multiple research studies. During his fellowship, he received a training grant from the National Institutes of Health enabling evaluation of the ability of CMR to diagnose COVID-19-associated heart inflammation among college athletes. He currently uses CMR to assess heart transplant outcomes in donors positive for hepatitis C virus. Dr. Clark also received a research grant from the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Association supporting a randomized, controlled clinical trial of cardiac rehabilitation among patients with Fontan failure.
Dr. Clark serves as a peer reviewer for multiple prestigious journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA). He serves on the editorial board for both JAHA and Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging. He is also a member of numerous professional medical societies, including the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Adult Congenital Heart Association. -
David Clark
Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioMy career is dedicated to improving the safety, effectiveness and availability of pain relief. Both the needs and opportunities in these areas are limitless. I have had the good fortune of working as a clinician, teacher and scientist at Stanford University and the Palo Alto VA hospital for more than two decades.
Much of my time is spent on laboratory, translational and clinical research. In the laboratory, we are pursuing several projects related to the questions of why pain sometimes becomes chronic after injuries and why opioids lose their effectiveness over time. Alterations in endogenous pain control mechanisms and the involvement of the adaptive system of immunity are central to these investigations. We would like to find ways to maximize functional recovery after surgery and other forms of trauma while minimizing the risks of analgesic use. This work involves local, national and international collaborations. Clinical trials work involves establishing the efficacy of novel forms of analgesic therapy as well as the comparative effectiveness of long-established approaches to controlling common forms of pain such as low back pain. This spectrum of pain-related pursuits continues to evolve with the rapid expansion of the field. -
John Clarke
Clinical Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology
BioDr. John Clarke recently joined the Gastroenterology & Hepatology Division at Stanford University as Director of the Esophageal Program. He previously spent 17 years in Baltimore, including 9 years on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University where he was an Associate Professor and at various times Director of Esophageal Motility, Director of Gastrointestinal Motility, Clinical Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Neurogastroenterology, and Clinical Director of the Gastroenterology & Hepatology Division at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
His career has combined research, education and clinical care. His clinical areas of expertise include achalasia, dysphagia, eosinophilic esophagitis, esophageal dysmotility, gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastroparesis, GI-manifestations of scleroderma and GI dysmotility. While at Johns Hopkins University, he was inducted into The Miller-Coulson Academy for Clinical Excellence, an institutional honor society for master clinicians at the time limited to 50 members across the entire university.
From an education standpoint, he has lectured in over a dozen countries, authored over 25 textbook chapters and serves on the educational affairs committee of the American College of Gastroenterology. He has also won several major teaching awards, including The Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Teaching, given to one faculty member per year in the entire School of Medicine.
His research has focused on optimization and characterization of diagnostic studies to evaluate motility disorders, as well the relationship between therapeutic endoscopic techniques and treatment of motility disorders. He was an investigator on the NIH Gastroparesis Consortium and is also a former recipient of the AGA Don Castell Award. -
Michael F. Clarke, M.D.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Clarke maintains a laboratory focused on two areas of research: i) the control of self-renewal of normal stem cells and diseases such as cancer and hereditary diseases; and ii) the identification and characterization of cancer stem cells. His laboratory is investigating how perturbations of stem cell regulatory machinery contributes to human disease. In particular, the laboratory is investigating epigenetic regulators of self renewal, the process by which stem cells regenerate themselves.

Shoa L. Clarke, MD, PhD
Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine) and of Pediatrics
BioDr. Clarke is a preventive cardiologist and a physician-scientist focused on disease prevention. He earned his undergraduate degree in human biology from the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University before obtaining his MD and PhD (genetics) from Stanford University School of Medicine. He has completed clinical training in internal medicine (Brigham & Women’s Hospital), pediatrics (Boston Children’s Hospital), and cardiovascular medicine (Stanford Hospital), and he is board certified in all three specialties. His research is focused on 1) understanding complex disease genetics in diverse populations, 2) integrating monogenic and polygenic risk with clinical risk, 3) large-scale phenotyping using the electronic health record and medical images. His clinical practice focuses on identifying risk factors for cardiovascular disease with the goal of promoting health and longevity through evidence-based personalized treatment. He is interested in developing family-centric approaches for the treatment of adults and children carrying genetic risk for disease.

He has worked on several global health projects in India, Pakistan and East Africa. He is the founder of several impact-centered organizations such as Organic Route, a company focused on improving agricultural supply chains and the distribution of healthy foods in rural areas of East Africa.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur group uses molecular biology, biochemistry, and cellular immunology to investigate the activation and effector function of T lymphocytes. Research in the laboratory is currently focused on three areas: granulysin, a lytic molecule expressed late (7-12 days) after T cell activation; identification of correlates of immunity in diseases such as tuberculosis; and tolerance. The long term goal of this work is to develop new ways to treat human disease.

Her doctoral research focused on characterizing the preclinical disease stage of Alzheimer's disease using health, biomarker, and cognitive profiles obtained in late-midlife. At Stanford, Karly's research combines neuroimaging and fluid biomarkers to study trajectories of aging, including healthy brain aging as well as Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Elana Trubowitch Cohn

BioDr. Elana Cohn (She/Her) is a board-certified Family Physician, with a love for caring for the whole person and the entire family.
She completed her bachelor's degree in Neuroscience and Behavior at Barnard College, after which she worked as a Health Outreach coordinator on a mobile medical van providing care to the homeless population in NY, which sparked her love for primary care. She received her medical degree at Tel aviv University, and completed her residency at Mount Sinai and the Institute for Family Health.
Her practice spans care for all ages, with an emphasis on care for marginalized populations, reproductive health, office based-procedures, and teaching. She is passionate about integrating mental health care and reproductive justice into general practice, and making care for her patients as comprehensive as possible.
Outside of the office, she loves to travel and explore new places, dance her heart out, and spend time with her family. -
Pasqualina Colella
Senior Research Scientist, Pediatrics - Genetics
BioDr. Pasqualina Colella is a scientist with extensive expertise in preclinical gene and cell therapy for rare inherited diseases.
She is currently a Senior Research Scientist at Stanford University, where she is developing innovative cell therapy approaches to address neuropathic lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs) using hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and genome editing. Her particular focus is on untreatable diseases caused by progranulin deficiency.
During her PhD research at TIGEM (IT), she developed therapeutic approaches for inherited blindness caused by the degeneration of retinal photoreceptors and dual AAV-mediated large gene delivery to the retina for USHIB and STGD.
During her postdoctoral studies at Genethon (FR), Dr. Colella focused on gene therapy for diseases caused by lysosomal enzyme deficiencies, particularly Pompe disease. She addressed immune and efficacy limitations of preclinical in vivo AAV gene therapy through transgene engineering, including secretable GAA and tandem promoters, while also investigating lysosomal enzyme trafficking and immune responses to gene therapy.
Dr. Colella has a proven track record, with 30 published manuscripts (16 as first author, 6 as corresponding author) and 5 patents.
Her preclinical work laid the initial foundation for USH1B and Pompe disease clinical trials.
She is dedicated to driving innovations in gene and cell therapy for untreatable diseases and mentoring the next generation of passionate and rigorous gene and cell therapists -

Todd Coleman

BioTodd P. Coleman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, and by courtesy, Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He received B.S. degrees in electrical engineering (summa cum laude), as well as computer engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Michigan (Go Blue). He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from MIT in electrical engineering and computer science. He did postdoctoral studies at MIT and Mass General Hospital in quantitative neuroscience. He previously was a faculty member in the Departments of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and the University of California, San Diego, respectively. Dr. Coleman’s research is very multi-disciplinary, using tools from applied probability, physiology, and bioelectronics. Examples include, for instance, optimal transport methods in high-dimensional uncertainty quantification and developing technologies and algorithms to monitor and modulate physiology of the nervous systems in the brain and visceral organs. He has served as a Principal Investigator on grants from the NSF, NIH, Department of Defense, and multiple private foundations. Dr. Coleman is an inventor on 10 granted US patents. He has been selected as a Gilbreth Lecturer for the National Academy of Engineering, a TEDMED speaker, and a Fellow of IEEE as well as the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He recently served as Chair of the National Academies Standing Committee on Biotechnology Capabilities and National Security Needs.

BioReceived her undergraduate degree from Williams College, after which she spent one year conducting research at the NIH National Cancer Institute. She then attended medical school at the University of Michigan, where she also completed a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Pathology as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program. She completed residency at UCSF prior to starting Hematology and Oncology fellowship training at Stanford. Her prior research has focused on the transcription factor biology and deregulated signaling pathways in hematologic malignancies. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Ravi Majeti's lab studying clonal hematopoiesis and preleukemic stem cells.

Ruben J Colman, MD, PhD
Instructor, Pediatrics - Gastroenterology
BioDr. Colman is a pediatric gastroenterologist and physician-scientist with an overarching goal to improve and optimize the quality of care and outcomes for children with pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) through precision medicine approaches. His interdisciplinary team science research program focuses on making precision medicine clinically actionable through innovative solutions merging clinical pharmacology knowledge with ‘-omics’ discoveries using microbiome and metabolomics signatures. Part of this work includes translating these findings into improved clinical treat-to-target endpoints with immediate noninvasive point-of-care measures such as intestinal ultrasound.
The foundation of his current work originates from his PhD titled ‘Precision Dosing and Personalized Medicine in pediatric IBD’. During his training, Dr. Colman was also an American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) editorial fellow for Gastroenterology and he is actively involved in the committees of several professional societies including the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. Dr. Colman is currently supported by Early Career Awards of the Thrasher Research Fund, the NASPGHAN Foundation and the Stanford Medicine Children’s Health Center for IBD and Celiac Disease Research Program. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsUsing various animal models of bladder outlet obstruction as a representation of human prostatic disease, I am investigating how intervening with pharmacotherapy, neuromodulation, and other novel therapies may help to reverse the adverse changes in the bladder due to the obstruction.
I also am investigating new, minimally invasive treatments for post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence.
I am also investigating the role of neruomodulation in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain and IC. -
Le Cong

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab are developing gene-editing technologies, such as CRISPR systems for in vivo therapy, and cleavage-free techniques for large gene insertion via microbial recombinase. Our team also pioneers in single-cell tracking for cancer and immunology studies using novel CRISPR tools. To accelerate our work, we integrate AI and machine learning into these technologies, design and evolve proteins/RNAs, pushing frontiers in understanding and treating neurological and immunological disease.
