Chelsey Simone Clark

Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatrics - CardiologyBioDr. Clark is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiologist with the Adult Congenital Heart Program at Stanford Health Care. He is also a clinical assistant professor with dual appointments in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology, Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Clark specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and the management of congenital and acquired heart disease in children. His clinical focus involves the combined use of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and other imaging techniques to evaluate patients with known or suspected cardiovascular disease. Dr. Clark’s extensive training and experience with these techniques include multiple fellowships in adult cardiology, cardiovascular imaging, and ACHD.
Dr. Clark is currently a co-investigator on multiple research studies. During his fellowship, he received a training grant from the National Institutes of Health enabling evaluation of the ability of CMR to diagnose COVID-19-associated heart inflammation among college athletes. He currently uses CMR to assess heart transplant outcomes in donors positive for hepatitis C virus. Dr. Clark also received a research grant from the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Association supporting a randomized, controlled clinical trial of cardiac rehabilitation among patients with Fontan failure.
Dr. Clark serves as a peer reviewer for multiple prestigious journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA). He serves on the editorial board for both JAHA and Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging. He is also a member of numerous professional medical societies, including the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Adult Congenital Heart Association. -
David Clark

BioMy career is dedicated to improving the safety, effectiveness and availability of pain relief. Both the needs and opportunities in these areas are limitless. I have had the good fortune of working as a clinician, teacher and scientist at Stanford University and the Palo Alto VA hospital for more than two decades.
Much of my time is spent on laboratory, translational and clinical research. In the laboratory, we are pursuing several projects related to the questions of why pain sometimes becomes chronic after injuries and why opioids lose their effectiveness over time. Alterations in endogenous pain control mechanisms and the involvement of the adaptive system of immunity are central to these investigations. We would like to find ways to maximize functional recovery after surgery and other forms of trauma while minimizing the risks of analgesic use. This work involves local, national and international collaborations. Clinical trials work involves establishing the efficacy of novel forms of analgesic therapy as well as the comparative effectiveness of long-established approaches to controlling common forms of pain such as low back pain. This spectrum of pain-related pursuits continues to evolve with the rapid expansion of the field. -
Eve Clark

BioI am interested in first language acquisition, the acquisition of meaning, acquisitional principles in word-formation compared across children and languages, and general semantic and pragmatic issues in the lexicon and in language use. I am currently working on the kinds of pragmatic information adults offer small children as they talk to them, and on children's ability to make use of this information as they make inferences about unfamiliar meanings and about the relations between familiar and unfamiliar words. I am interested in the inferences children make about where to 'place' unfamiliar words, how they identify the relevant semantic domains, and what they can learn about conventional ways to say things based on adult responses to child errors during acquisition. All of these 'activities' involve children and adults placing information in common ground as they interact. Another current interest of mine is the construction of verb paradigms: how do children go from using a single verb form to using forms that contrast in meaning -- on such dimensions as person, number, and tense? How do they learn to distinguish the meanings of homophones? To what extent do they make use of adult input to discern the underlying structure of the system? And how does conversation with more expert speakers (usually adults) foster the acquisition of a first language? I am particularly interested in the general role of practice along with feedback here.

Tom Clark

BioTom Clark is a Professor of Political Science and, by courtesy, a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. His research and teaching interests are in the political economy of judicial politics, policing and public safety, as well as applied formal theory and statistical methodology. Current research projects focus on two areas. The first is information and policy-making, and is concerned with how institutions work in tandem to shape the content of political outputs. The second is the politics of public safety and criminal justice. His published research examines the politics of law-enforcement and criminal justice, judicial learning and rule-making, interactions among actors within the judiciary, representation on the courts, empirical techniques for estimating judicial preferences and the content of judicial decisions, and the interaction between the judiciary and other institutions.
He is the editor of The Journal of Law & Courts, the flagship journal of the Law & Courts section of the American Political Science Association. Prior to joining Stanford, he was the David and Mary Winton Green Professor at the University of Chicago and before that the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Political Science at Emory University. He has held visiting appointments at Princeton University, Stanford University, the Institute for Advanced Study at the Toulouse School of Economics. -
John Clarke
Clinical Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology
BioDr. John Clarke recently joined the Gastroenterology & Hepatology Division at Stanford University as Director of the Esophageal Program. He previously spent 17 years in Baltimore, including 9 years on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University where he was an Associate Professor and at various times Director of Esophageal Motility, Director of Gastrointestinal Motility, Clinical Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Neurogastroenterology, and Clinical Director of the Gastroenterology & Hepatology Division at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
His career has combined research, education and clinical care. His clinical areas of expertise include achalasia, dysphagia, eosinophilic esophagitis, esophageal dysmotility, gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastroparesis, GI-manifestations of scleroderma and GI dysmotility. While at Johns Hopkins University, he was inducted into The Miller-Coulson Academy for Clinical Excellence, an institutional honor society for master clinicians at the time limited to 50 members across the entire university.
From an education standpoint, he has lectured in over a dozen countries, authored over 25 textbook chapters and serves on the educational affairs committee of the American College of Gastroenterology. He has also won several major teaching awards, including The Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Teaching, given to one faculty member per year in the entire School of Medicine.
His research has focused on optimization and characterization of diagnostic studies to evaluate motility disorders, as well the relationship between therapeutic endoscopic techniques and treatment of motility disorders. He was an investigator on the NIH Gastroparesis Consortium and is also a former recipient of the AGA Don Castell Award. -
Michael F. Clarke, M.D.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Clarke maintains a laboratory focused on two areas of research: i) the control of self-renewal of normal stem cells and diseases such as cancer and hereditary diseases; and ii) the identification and characterization of cancer stem cells. His laboratory is investigating how perturbations of stem cell regulatory machinery contributes to human disease. In particular, the laboratory is investigating epigenetic regulators of self renewal, the process by which stem cells regenerate themselves.

Shoa L. Clarke, MD, PhD

BioDr. Clarke is a preventive cardiologist and a physician-scientist focused on disease prevention. He earned his undergraduate degree in human biology from the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University before obtaining his MD and PhD (genetics) from Stanford University School of Medicine. He has completed clinical training in internal medicine (Brigham & Women’s Hospital), pediatrics (Boston Children’s Hospital), and cardiovascular medicine (Stanford Hospital), and he is board certified in all three specialties. His research is focused on 1) understanding complex disease genetics in diverse populations, 2) integrating monogenic and polygenic risk with clinical risk, 3) large-scale phenotyping using the electronic health record and medical images. His clinical practice focuses on identifying risk factors for cardiovascular disease with the goal of promoting health and longevity through evidence-based personalized treatment. He is interested in developing family-centric approaches for the treatment of adults and children carrying genetic risk for disease.

Stephanie Clarke
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Child Development
BioDr. Stephanie Clarke is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Clarke is an expert in the treatment of suicidal and self-harming behavior in adolescents, with additional expertise in evidence-based treatment of trauma and restrictive eating disorders in adolescents. She is intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), currently the only well-established treatment for self-harming adolescents at high risk for suicide. Dr. Clarke is an Attending Psychologist and supervisor in Stanford’s Adolescent DBT Program, Eating Disorders Clinic, and Comprehensive Care Program (CCP, inpatient unit for medical issues related to disordered eating), where she specialized in seeing complex cases with multiple diagnoses (e.g., comorbid Anorexia Nervosa and suicidality/self-harm). She was the Stanford Psychologist in the DBT Intensive Outpatient Program, RISE, a collaboration between Stanford and Children’s Health Council, where she was in charge of training and supervision of psychology trainees. Dr. Clarke also provides education and training to psychology and psychiatry trainees in DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), suicidality, self-harm, mood disorders, eating disorders, and trauma. Dr. Clarke has given numerous talks, trainings, and lectures and has co-authored several publications on the topics of adolescent suicide, self-harming behavior, and DBT.
In 2020, Dr. Clarke was the recipient of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science's Clinical Innovation and Service Award. Dr. Clarke was also awarded funding from the Professional Leadership Development Awards Program for the 20-21 academic year, which supports the career development of department faculty who exhibit particular promise in advancing into leadership roles in academic medicine. Dr. Clarke has been funded by a grant from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Maternal and Child Health Research Institute to study the safety and feasibility of providing exposure-based trauma treatment to suicidal teens in stage I DBT.
Dr. Clarke also maintains a small private practice, where she provides consultation, parent coaching, and individual therapy for adolescents and adults using DBT, FBT, exposure and response prevention, ACT, compassion-focused, and other CBT and evidence-based approaches. -
Stephen Clarke

BioStephen E. Clarke, PhD, is a postdoctoral scholar in the Brain Interfacing Lab, Department of Bioengineering. He obtained a BSc in Mathematics from the University of New Brunswick, and a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Ottawa. His research draws on combined experimental and computational expertise to explore neuronal information processing on multiple scales, and across species. His long-term research goals involve application of closed-loop brain machine interface technologies as a platform for neurorehabilitation and repair in motor and cognitive systems, leveraging both insights from basic neuroscience and exciting new implant technologies.

Carol Clayberger

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur group uses molecular biology, biochemistry, and cellular immunology to investigate the activation and effector function of T lymphocytes. Research in the laboratory is currently focused on three areas: granulysin, a lytic molecule expressed late (7-12 days) after T cell activation; identification of correlates of immunity in diseases such as tuberculosis; and tolerance. The long term goal of this work is to develop new ways to treat human disease.

Bruce Clemens

BioClemens studies growth and structure of thin film, interface and nanostructured materials for catalytic, electronic and photovoltaic applications. He and his group investigate phase transitions and kinetics in nanostructured materials, and perform nanoparticle engineering for hydrogen storage and catalysis. Recently he and his collaborators have developed nano-portals for efficient injection of hydrogen into storage media, dual-phase nanoparticles for catalysis, amorphous metal electrodes for semiconductor devices, and a lift-off process for forming free-standing, single-crystal films of compound semiconductors.

Sara Clemente

BioBorn in Connecticut but raised in Ecuador, Sara Clemente spent the majority of her early childhood admiring the rich Andean Indigenous cultures that made her native city of Cuenca so unique. Her experiences taught her to value the indigenous groups present in contemporary societies and the roles that they have in enabling diversity and interconnectivity to flourish in South American nations. She attended New York City’s Macaulay Honors College and chose to pursue her interests in indigenous peoples’ language and land rights by majoring in Linguistics, Translation, and Human Rights. She has also interned at VIVAT International as both a translator and researcher in a variety of land grabbing projects. Her interests in language, Human Rights, and indigenous peoples led her to pursue a master’s in Latin American Studies and Human Rights in Latin American Studies at CLAS. Currently, she manages, plans, and develops budgets for events and communications at CLAS. In order to find balance in her life, Sara loves to backpack and practice Vinyasa and Aerial Yoga and has her 200-hr Yoga Teacher Training Certificate.

BioI am a Staff Scientist at the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions. My research focuses on optimizing molecular and computational tools to address ecological and evolutionary questions. I have published in the areas of environmental change, ocean health, biodiversity, disease, eDNA, -omics, and aquaculture. I hold a B.S. in Biology from the University of Georgia, began my doctoral studies at the University of California, Merced, and earned my Ph.D. at Penn State. I completed two postdoctoral appointments, first as a joint-postdoctoral researcher at University of Washington's School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences and University of Maryland's Institute for Marine and Environmental Technology. Second, I completed advanced collaborative training as a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University’s Woods Institute for the Environment in conjunction with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. I enjoy exploring and teaching about the natural world, its diversity, complexities, and the challenges faced by our environment.
