Mark Duggan
Wayne and Jodi Cooperman Professor and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research
BioMark Duggan is a Professor of Economics at Stanford University and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering at M.I.T. in 1992 and 1994, respectively, and his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 1999. He currently is a Co-Editor at the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy and was previously a Co-Editor at the Journal of Public Economics. Before arriving to Stanford in the summer of 2014, Duggan served on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School (2011-14), the University of Maryland's Economics Department (2003-11), and the University of Chicago's Economics Department (1999-2003).
Professor Duggan's research focuses primarily on the effect of government expenditure programs such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid on the behavior of individuals and firms. Some of his more recent research is exploring the effect of federal disability programs on the labor market and of changes to the Medicare and Medicaid programs on the cost and quality of health care. He is also estimating the effect of patent reforms in India on the price and utilization of pharmaceutical treatments. His research has been published in leading academic journals including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, and the Quarterly Journal of Economics and has been featured in outlets such as The Economist, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.
Professor Duggan was the 2010 recipient of the ASHEcon Medal, which is awarded every two years by the American Society of Health Economists to the economist aged 40 and under in the U.S. who has made the most significant contributions to the field of health economics. Along with his co-author Fiona Scott Morton, he received the National Institute for Health Care Management's 2011 Health Care Research Award for their work on Medicare Part D. He was a Fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation from 2004 to 2006 and a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution from 2006 to 2007. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Social Security Administration, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Duggan served from 2009 to 2010 as the Senior Economist for Health Care Policy at the White House Council of Economic Advisers and has also been an Expert Witness for the U.S. Department of Justice. -
Rachelle Dugue, MD, PhD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Adult Neurology
BioDr. Dugue is a board-certified neurologist within the Neurohospitalist Division. She cares for patients at both Stanford Health Care and Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley. She received her MD and PhD at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where she completed a thesis studying novel treatments for traumatic brain injury. Dr. Dugue then completed her neurology residency at Columbia University Medical Center-New York Presbyterian, followed by a vascular neurology fellowship at Stanford University Hospital.
Dr. Dugue provides comprehensive, individualized care for patients with a wide range of neurological conditions. She has been recognized for her dedication to excellence in patient care, medical education, and student mentorship.
Her research interests are centered on acute neurologic care, clinical trials, stroke, and neuroinfectious disease. Dr. Dugue has published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, including The Neurohospitalist, Practical Neurology, Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, and Neurology. -
Shefali Dujari, MD

BioDr. Dujari is a board-certified neurologist and fellowship-trained neurohospitalist, specializing in the care of acute neurologic disorders. She practices at both Stanford Hospital and Stanford ValleyCare. She completed her medical training at Boston University, internal medicine preliminary year at California Pacific Medical Center, neurology residency at Stanford University, and neurohospitalist fellowship at Stanford University. She serves as the associate program director of the Stanford Adult Neurology Residency program, the Neurosciences Quality Director at ValleyCare, and the Neurology Resident & Fellow Wellness & Mentoring Committee faculty lead. She has a special interest in medical education and quality improvement.

Jeff Dukes

BioJeff Dukes is a senior staff scientist in the Department of Global Ecology at the Carnegie Institution for Science, and a Professor (by courtesy) in the Departments of Biology and Earth System Science at Stanford University. Dr. Dukes’s research examines how plants and ecosystems respond to a changing environment, focusing on topics from invasive species to climate change. Much of his experimental work seeks to inform and improve climate models. Dr. Dukes received a Ph.D from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree from Brown University, both in Biological Sciences. He has been elected a Fellow and named a Public Engagement Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and he is a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America. Before coming to Stanford and Carnegie, he was a professor at Purdue University, where he held the Belcher Chair for Environmental Sustainability in the College of Agriculture and directed the Purdue Climate Change Research Center.

Caroline Duncombe
Postdoctoral Scholar, Immunity Transplant Infection
BioDr. Caroline Duncombe is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Institute for Immunity, Transplantation, and Infection at Stanford University. Her research broadly explores how sex-based differences influence immune responses to infectious diseases. She applies systems-level approaches to investigate molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying immune variation, with the goal of informing more equitable and effective interventions.
Dr. Duncombe earned her PhD in Pathobiology from the University of Washington, where she pursued interdisciplinary research integrating systems biology, immunology, epidemiology, endocrinology, and parasitology. Her work has contributed to a deeper understanding of how sex and sex hormones shape host-pathogen interactions and vaccine responses.
In addition to her academic research, Dr. Duncombe is committed to science communication. She has produced science-focused comedy shows for over four years, using storytelling and humor to make complex scientific ideas more accessible.

Tamara Dunn
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Hematology
BioDr. Tamara Dunn is a clinical associate professor in the Division of Hematology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She is a clinician with a special interest in medical education, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Specifically, she is committed to improving workforce diversity and creating inclusive workplaces. She is currently the Program Director for the Stanford Hematology/Oncology Fellowship and one of the Associate Chairs of Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Medicine at Stanford. She is a member of the inaugural American Society of Hematology (ASH) Ambassador Cohort and serves on the ASH Women in Hematology committee, which she co-chairs. She is on the steering committee and is a mentor for Stanford’s Leadership Education in Advancing Diversity (LEAD) program. She takes pride in treating underserved veterans at the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital, where she sees both classical and malignant hematology. Outside of medicine she enjoys singing, dancing, sports (Go Chiefs! Mary Laurence Dunne

BioDr. Mimi Dunne is a physician leader in palliative and emergency medicine with a longstanding commitment to innovation in end-of-life care and medical education. A 2019-2020 Stanford Distinguished Careers Institute Fellow, Dr. Dunne has co-taught MED 296: Being Mortal at Stanford University School of Medicine.
A graduate of Saint Louis University School of Medicine, she completed postgraduate training at the University of Chicago, certification in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at the University of Massachusetts, and is board-certified in both Emergency Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. As Medical Director of Hudson Valley Hospice, she founded the region’s first palliative care program in 2001.
Her scholarly work spans emergency medicine, palliative medicine, and global health, and she has authored studies, articles, and book chapters in these fields. She currently serves as an advisor to the African Center for Research in End of Life Care in Rwanda and to Bulamu Health Care in Uganda. -

BioI am a senior research scientist and physical therapist with over 20 years of experience, specializing in neuromuscular clinical research. Currently, I am the Director of clinical outcomes and research developments within the Neuromuscular division and Co-Director, Stanford Innovative Genetic Neurologic Investigation and Treatment Evaluation Center. My doctoral studies focused on understanding the impact of contracture development on subsequent musculoskeletal and biomechanical changes that influence overall functional outcomes. I am deeply committed to advancing my work by creating innovative outcome measures that bridge the gap with traditional metrics for a range of neuromuscular disorders. Furthermore, I am enthusiastic about investigating the therapeutic advantages of incorporating rehabilitation and exercise as complementary treatments for managing neuromuscular conditions.
In my professional pursuits, I prioritize integrity, work ethic, humility, empathy, leadership, initiative, and drive in all my collaborations. Inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem “"to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded", I strive to contribute meaningfully in both my personal and professional endeavors. While it can be challenging to articulate one's accomplishments and impact, I aspire to uphold the values and principles that guide me, serving as a compass in navigating both my personal and professional path. I find it difficult to summarize my own accomplishments or impact. So I would like to share a recommendation that was written about me in which I hope to refer back as my north star in both my personal and professional life.
"Dr Tina Duong is a world renown physiotherapist, master trainer, clinical investigator, scientific academician and most importantly an INCREDIBLE person. I had the privilege of working with her side by side during the development of a new therapy for spinal muscular atrophy. Her determination to help the scientific community, patients and carers is truly inspiring. Her knowledge and skills place her at the vanguard of clinical translation of data and meaningful patient outcomes. Her capabilities span everything from publications, meeting moderation, speaker events and clinical training. She has instinctive clinical intuition which allows her to support drug development and translation in both early stage and also during pivotal trial design, data interpretation and patient care and management. Benjamin J. Durant, MD

BioDr. Benjamin Durant is a board-certified family medicine doctor at Stanford Health Care and a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population Health at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Durant provides complete primary care for people of all ages, with a strong focus on health equity and supporting underserved communities. His clinical interests include outpatient care, prenatal and reproductive health, and treating substance use disorders. He has extensive experience in street medicine and mobile outreach to care for people experiencing homelessness. Dr. Durant takes a trauma-informed, relationship-based approach, building trust and meeting patients where they are.
His academic and service work has focused on improving access to care, training health care workers in under-resourced areas, and helping patients who face challenges like poverty, housing insecurity, or limited access to services. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe mission of the Durazzo BRASS lab is to better understand how the interplay between biomedical, psychological and social factors influence treatment outcome in Veterans and civilians seeking treatment for alcohol and substance use disorders. To accomplish this mission, our multidisciplinary team integrates information from advanced neuroimaging, neurocognitive assessment, psychodiagnostic and genotyping methods to identify the biopsychosocial factors associated with relapse and sustained sobriety. Data from Veteran's Administration and Stanford funded Clinical trials are currently being analyzed by the BRASS lab to evaluate the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation techniques as novel complementary treatments to reduce the high rate of return to hazardous drinking experienced by individuals with alcohol and substance abuse disorders. The ultimate goal of our multidisciplinary research program is to promote the development of more effective biomedical and behavioral treatments for alcohol and substance use disorders through consideration of the brain biology, psychology and social circumstances of each individual.
