Alan C. Pao

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are broadly interested in how the kidneys control salt, water, and electrolyte homeostasis in the body. Our disease focus is on kidney stone disease. We use cultured kidney cells, transgenic mice, human plasma/urine samples, and electronic health record data to study the pathogenesis of kidney stone disease. Our therapeutic focus is on the development of small molecule compounds that can be used for kidney stone prevention.

Nilay Papila
Senior Program Manager, Precourt Institute for Energy
BioNilay Papila is an experienced senior program manager, currently working for the Hacking for Defense program at Stanford University. With a strong background in research management, pre- and post-award services, university-industry cooperation, technology transfer, intellectual property, and technology commercialization, Nilay brings a wealth of expertise to her role.
Prior to joining Stanford, Nilay served as the Founding Director of the Technology Transfer Office at Ozyegin University in Istanbul, where she played a pivotal role in fostering innovation and collaboration. She also held positions as the Manager of the Project Development Office at Sabanci University and Associate Director of the Interdisciplinary Program Development Office at the University of Florida. Notably, she served as a national expert on the European Union 7th Framework Program (Marie Curie Actions) and as an expert/evaluator at the Technology Transfer Support Program Group at the Science and Technology Council of Turkey.
Nilay holds a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Florida, which she earned in 2001, following her completion of B.S. and M.S. degrees in the Aerospace Engineering Department of the METU in Ankara in 1994 and 1997, respectively.
Recognized for her accomplishments, Nilay is a Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellow (2000), an NCURA (National Council of Research Administration) Global Fellow at Stanford University (2018), and a certified Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP) (2018). These accomplishments highlight her dedication to advancing research and innovation within academic and industry settings. -

In San Diego, I volunteered in migrant clinics. After residency, I have worked in a rural hospital, urban FQHC clinic, suburban county hospital, and private practice. Now, I am back at Stanford as a Health Equity Media Fellow through the Center of Biomedical Ethics.

Vedant Pargaonkar
Basic Life Research Scientist, Medicine - Med/Cardiovascular Medicine
BioMy long-term research interests involve development of algorithms using computational methods for early detection of coronary pathophysiology including, endothelial dysfunction and microvascular dysfunction (MVD) and/or a myocardial bridge (MB) in patients with angina and no obstructive coronary artery disease (NOCAD) and the identification of novel target therapies for primary prevention and improved prognosis in these patients. Under the mentorship of Dr. Jennifer Tremmel in Cardiovascular medicine at Stanford, I have been systematically studying to better understand the underlying pathophysiology of these patients, as well as the optimal use of diagnostic testing and treatment using the angina and no-obstructive CAD Registry at Stanford. In collaboration with other investigators in this field, we have published multiple scientific articles highlighting the limitations of current testing in this population and identification of novel diagnostic tools for early diagnosis and management of patients with angina and no obstructive CAD. My research also focuses on myocardial infarction (MI) in women, particularly spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD). I have been involved in the design and execution of the first international collaborative study in SCAD, investigating peripartum vs. non-peripartum SCAD. This is analyzing the largest cohort of patients recruited from multiple US and non-US sites to understand the pathophysiological differences in these patient cohorts.

Mitchel Pariani
Clinical Assistant Professor (Affiliated), Pediatrics - Genetics
BioMitchel earned his Master’s degree in genetic counseling from California State University, Northridge in 2007. At Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Mitchel served as genetic counselor and coordinator for David Rimoin, MD, PhD’s connective tissue disorders clinic and later established the cardiovascular genetics program at CSMC. At CSMC he also created the CSMC Summer Genetic Counseling Rotation Program that hosted students from genetic counseling programs around the United States. In 2014 he joined the new Stanford Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease to start a familial hypercholesterolemia clinic and provide genetic counseling for patients with cardiomyopathies. As the center expanded, Mitchel joined the Stanford Marfan Center as a genetic counselor and serves as program coordinator. He is the primary instructor for Stanford’s Cardiovascular Genetics course and serves as a clinical supervisor and mentor for students and volunteers.

Divya Parikh, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Oncology
BioDr. Divya Parikh is board-certified in both medical oncology and internal medicine. She obtained her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed both her residency and fellowship through Stanford University. During her fellowship, she simultaneously earned a Master of Science in health policy from Stanford University.
Dr. Parikh specializes in the care of patients with genitourinary cancers. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, she currently is a clinical assistant professor of medical oncology at Stanford School of Medicine. She mentors medical residents and fellows by sharing her insights, knowledge, and expertise.
Dr. Parikh has a strong research background. She has published in multiple academic journals and presented her findings through poster and oral presentations at various medical conferences. -
Victoria Parikh
Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine)
BioDr. Parikh is a clinician scientist who cares for patients with and studies inherited (genetic) cardiovascular disease. She is the director of the Stanford Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease (SCICD) which is one of the largest of its kind in the country. SCICD integrates clinical and basic science with the expert care of patients with genetic cardiovascular conditions (e.g., cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias and vascular diseases). It provides cutting edge care for thousands of patients and families across the lifespan and integrates medical, surgical and genetics care. Our team includes physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, genetic counselors, exercise physiologists and scientists.
Dr. Parikh's own clinical practice and laboratory are focused on the genetics of cardiomyopathies and their associated arrhythmogenic substrates. She completed clinical cardiology fellowship at Stanford School of Medicine and her medical residency at the University of California, San Francisco. Funded by multiple research grants from the NIH, her lab seeks to identify novel mechanisms and therapeutic technologies for genetic cardiomyopathy as well as better understand the natural histories of patients affected by these diseases. -

David Jaehyun Park
Clinical Instructor, Neurosurgery
BioDr. David Park, MD, PhD, is a neurosurgeon who graduated from medical school at the Catholic University of Korea in Seoul, South Korea. He completed his internship and residency training in the Department of Neurosurgery at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital. He became a board-certified neurosurgeon in South Korea in 2014 and subsequently completed a 2-year fellowship at the same hospital, specializing in brain tumor surgery and skull base surgery. During his residency, he also attended graduate school while practicing neurosurgery as a trainee and successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis, titled “Combination therapy for gliomas using temozolomide and interferon-beta secreting human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells,” in 2015.
After completing his fellowship in South Korea, Dr. Park moved to Singapore in 2016 and worked as a Clinical Fellow (Clinical Associate) at the National Neuroscience Institute for one year, focusing on Neurosurgical Oncology and Skull Base Surgery.
In 2017, Dr. Park joined Dr. Christian Badr’s lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, conducting translational research on glioblastoma and studying the role of fatty acids and lipid metabolism in glioblastoma to complement his clinical expertise.
During this time, Dr. Park also launched a startup based on his invention of an intraoperative diagnostic tool for tumor detection during glioma surgery. He collaborated with bioengineers at M.I.T. to develop a prototype and secured seed funding from the MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund Program. As an alumnus of the MIT Sandbox program, he continues to develop this project.
In 2020, Dr. Park served as a Neurosurgical Oncology and Radiosurgery Fellow (Teaching Associate) for a year at North Shore University Hospital, Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, in Long Island, New York, where he worked with Dr. Michael Schulder on brain tumor surgery including advanced techniques, such as Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS).
From July 2021 to June 2022, he completed another fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology and Radiosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland. He devoted his efforts to minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques such as LITT and Gamma Knife SRS, as well as awake brain tumor surgery under the guidance of Drs. Gene Barnett, Lilyana Angelov, and Ali Mohammadi.
As of July 2022, Dr. Park joined the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University as a Clinical Instructor, working with Dr. Steven D. Chang in the fields of Neurosurgical Oncology and CyberKnife SRS. As of July 2024, he has been promoted to Clinical Assistant Professor in the same field. -
Eujin Park
Assistant Professor of Education
BioDr. Park is an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. Dr. Park draws upon Critical Race Theory, Asian American Studies, and community engaged research to examine how Asian American families negotiate with race in and through educational institutions. She recently conducted an ethnographic investigation of community-based educational spaces in the Chicago-area Asian American community, which highlighted the role of community spaces in youths’ educational experiences and understandings of racializing discourses. In addition to publishing and presenting her work in multiple academic venues, Dr. Park draws upon her research in her work with Asian American and other youth of color in community-based organizations. She earned her Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a concentration in Social Sciences and a Minor in Qualitative Methods. She also holds an M.A. from UW-Madison and a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley.
Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Park was an IDEAL Provostial Fellow, part of the inaugural cohort of early-career scholars of race and ethnicity at Stanford University. Prior to that, she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy (IRRPP) at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
