Barathi Subramanian

BioI am a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Pathology and the Center for AI in Medicine & Imaging at Stanford University. My research focuses on computational pathology, medical AI, and computer vision, with emphasis on whole-slide image analysis, artifact-aware preprocessing, tissue classification, segmentation, survival prediction, and multimodal pathology foundation models.
I develop end-to-end AI pipelines for digital pathology, including whole-slide image preprocessing, tile extraction, quality control, annotation workflows, foundation-model-based feature extraction, and clinically relevant downstream prediction tasks.
Before joining Stanford, I completed my Ph.D. in Computer Vision at Kyungpook National University, South Korea, where I worked on anomaly detection, object detection, gesture recognition, and real-time computer vision systems. My broader goal is to build reliable, interpretable, and clinically useful AI systems for pathology and healthcare. -

By studying microbiome-host communication, the lab explores how microbial signals impact immune function, metabolism, and neurological health. Using multi-omic technologies and computational models, they aim to uncover mechanisms underlying inflammation, neurological disorders, and metabolic diseases. Their research supports the development of personalized therapies targeting the gut-brain axis.

Albert Tsai, M.D., Ph.D.

BioDr. Tsai received his undergraduate training at the University of California, Los Angeles (B.S., Biochemistry, summa cum laude), followed by combined medical and graduate training at the University of Southern California (M.D., Ph.D., Biochemistry). He completed anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP) residency and hematopathology fellowship at Stanford University, receiving board certification in AP/CP and hematopathology. As an instructor, he performed clinical diagnostic duties on the hematopathology service while doing postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Sean Bendall, with funding from the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.
As a physician and hematopathologist, he seeks to mechanistically dissect myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) using highly-multiplexed immunophenotyping — mass cytometry / cytometry by time-of-flight (CyTOF) and multiplexed ion beam imaging (MIBI). MDS is an especially complex and heterogeneous disease of abnormal blood cell development with increasing prevalence and few treatments. By combining practical experience clinically diagnosing MDS, next generation single cell proteomic approaches, fundamental discoveries in the biology of MDS, and knowledge of clinical laboratory testing, we hope to develop new clinical diagnostics for personalizing MDS therapies and therapeutic monitoring.
His clinical diagnostic duties are on the hematopathology service, primarily in the diagnosis of MDS, leukemias, lymphomas, and other hematopoietic diseases from blood, bone marrow, and tissue samples. -
Lev Tsypin

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am working with Botryococcus braunii, a species of freshwater microscopic algae. This organism is unique among plants in that it secretes copious amounts of oil that is chemically analogous to petroleum. This organism may be the key to developing a cheap and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, but we do not yet have the tools to engineer or optimize its oil production. My work aims to bridge this gap.

Mrigender Singh Virk

BioDr. Mrigender Virk completed his residency in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology at Georgetown University before joining Stanford for his Transfusion Medicine Fellowship. After completion of the fellowship, Dr. Virk joined the Department of Pathology as a member of the faculty for Transfusion Medicine. Dr. Virk is currently the Director of the Transfusion Medicine Laboratory and the Blood Banking & Transfusion Medicine Fellowship Program. His work has primarily focused on the improvement of blood bank inventory management through optimization of O-neg RBC utilization and waste mitigation of all blood products in an expanding enterprise footprint. Dr. Virk has also improved inventory efficiency and safety through the implementation of pathogen reduced platelets and pathogen reduced cryoprecipitated fibrinogen complex.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe planar cell polarity (PCP) signaling pathway polarizes animal cells along an axis parallel to the tissue plane, and in so doing generates long-range organization that can span entire tissues. Although its core proteins and much about their interactions are known, how PCP signaling occurs at a mechanistic level remains fundamentally mysterious. In my current project I will employ novel genetic methods to dissect the logic underlying how cellular asymmetry arises at a molecular level.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsFibrotic diseases kill more people than cancer in this country and worldwide. We believe that scar-forming cells called fibroblasts are at the core of the fibrotic response in parenchymal organ fibrosis in the lung, liver, skin, bone marrow and tumor stroma. At the cellular level we think of fibrosis as a step wise process which implicates inflammation and fibrosis. We seek to identify new effective immune therapy targets to treat fibrotic diseases.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur laboratory uses genome-wide methods to uncover alterations that drive cancer progression and metastasis in genetically-engineered mouse models of human cancers. We combine cell-culture based mechanistic studies with our ability to alter pathways of interest during tumor progression in vivo to better understand each step of metastatic spread and to uncover the therapeutic vulnerabilities of advanced cancer cells.
