James Ferrell
Professor of Chemical and Systems Biology and of Biochemistry
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy lab has two main goals: to understand the regulation of mitosis and to understand the systems-level logic of simple signaling circuits. We often make use of Xenopus laevis oocytes, eggs, and cell-free extracts for both sorts of study. We also carry out single-cell fluorescence imaging studies on mammalian cell lines. Our experimental work is complemented by computational and theoretical studies aimed at understanding the design principles and recurring themes of regulatory circuits.

Nicolas Fesser
Clinical Instructor, Emergency Medicine
BioNico Fesser, MD, is a Global Emergency Medicine Fellow in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University and a Stanford Global Health Postdoctoral Affiliate with the Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH), Stanford's university-wide hub for global health research, education, and training. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Washington, where he received the Resident Peer Recognition Award and the UW Medical Center Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award. He earned his MD from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society and received the Medical Alumni Association Award. He completed his undergraduate studies in Neurobiology, with a minor in Global Health, at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Born and raised in Madrid, he moved to upstate New York at age fourteen.
Dr. Fesser's interests include global emergency care, humanitarian response, and resource mobilization, particularly within conflict-affected settings. He has worked and collaborated directly within this context with organizations such as the United Nations, the West Africa AIDS Foundation, and Partners In Health. He has also conducted public health projects and worked clinically across much of sub-Saharan Africa, including Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), tuberculosis care in Lesotho, and HIV/AIDS work in Ghana and Tanzania, among others.
A central focus of his work is the rescue, demobilization, and reintegration of children affected by armed conflict in the eastern DRC. In 2020, he founded Fesser and Friends, a nonprofit organization that operates two child rescue and rehabilitation centers in the province of North Kivu and serves as UNICEF's referral center of choice in the region. The center in Beni serves children orphaned by armed conflict, many of them survivors of some of the country's worst mass atrocities. The center in Goma supports the long-term demobilization and reintegration of former child soldiers, many of whom were forced to commit acts of violence themselves. Both provide housing, medical care, education, vocational training, and family reunification services. To date, the organization has reunited hundreds of missing children with their families and has provided over a quarter of a million meals to children and displaced families. He also founded Beyond the Rhythm, a music-based fundraising initiative that helps support some of this work.
His fellowship training combines clinical practice with targeted coursework in tropical medicine, humanitarian operations, nonprofit leadership, and diplomacy. He is currently completing the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. His planned coursework also includes the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Health Emergencies in Large Populations (HELP) course at the University of Geneva, developed with the ICRC and WHO. In his second year, he will complete the Certificate in International Relations and Diplomacy at Sciences Po in Paris.
Dr. Fesser works at the intersection of emergency medicine, humanitarian diplomacy, and policy to improve outcomes for children and communities affected by armed conflict. Following his fellowship, he aspires to serve in senior leadership roles within humanitarian and governmental organizations. -
