Karl Lorenz
Professor of Medicine (Primary Care and Population Health)
On Leave from 09/15/2024 To 11/15/2024BioDr. Karl Lorenz, MD MSHS is a general internal medicine and palliative care physician, and Section chief of the VA Palo Alto-Stanford Palliative Care Program. Formerly at the VA Greater Los Angeles, Dr. Lorenz directed palliative care research at the VA Center for Innovation to Implementation and served on the faculty at the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Lorenz is a member of the VA’s national Hospice and Palliative Care Program (HPC) leadership team, director of the operational palliative care Quality Improvement Resource Center (QuIRC), and adjunct facility staff member at RAND. Dr. Lorenz’s work and leadership has been influential to the field of palliative care research. Under Dr. Lorenz’s leadership, since 2009 the Quality Improvement Resource Center (QuIRC) has served as one of three national leadership Centers responsible for strategic and operational support of the VA’s national hospice and palliative care programs. QuIRC develops and implements provider facing electronic tools for the VA’s national electronic medical record to improve the quality of palliative care. In that role, Dr. Lorenz participates with the national leadership team in strategic planning, policy development, and providing resources to support operational efforts. Dr. Lorenz has contributed to the field of global palliative care, serving the World Health Organization in its development of Palliative Care for Older People and leading methods for Palliative Care Essential Medications.

Irene L. Llorente
Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery
BioOriginally from Spain, Irene L. Llorente joined the Neurosurgery Department at Stanford University in 2022. Following her undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Leon in Spain, Dr. Llorente completed a MS in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience between the Universities of Leon (Spain) and Florence (Italy). She conducted a postdoctoral fellowship in the Neurology Department at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA where she also started her independent career as a Research Assistant Professor. Her research interests are largely directed toward understanding the biology of white matter repair in central nervous system (CNS) disorders, with a special emphasis on human glial biology. She is particularly interested in leveraging the current technologies emerging in the stem cell field to develop more efficient and effective stem cell-based therapies for stroke and vascular dementia patients. These stem cell-based therapies will also apply to other CNS disorders including spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury in the future.

Amory B Lovins
Adjunct Lecturer, Atmosphere and Energy
BioPhysicist Amory Lovins (1947– ) is Cofounder (1982) and Chairman Emeritus, and was Chief Scientist (2007–19), of RMI (Rocky Mountain Institute, www.rmi.org), where he continues to collaborate. He has designed many superefficient buildings, vehicles, and industrial plants, and synthesized an "integrative design" method and practice that can make the energy efficiency resource severalfold larger, yet cheaper, often with increasing returns. Since 1973 he has advised major firms and governments in >70 countries on advanced energy efficiency and strategy, linked with renewables, grid integration, resources, environment, security, development, and economy. He is a Visiting Scholar of the Precourt Institute for Energy and has worked in ~20 disciplines.
Lovins has received the Blue Planet, Volvo, Zayed, Onassis, Nissan, Shingo, and Mitchell Prizes, MacArthur and Ashoka Fellowships, 12 honorary doctorates, the Heinz, Lindbergh, Right Livelihood, National Design, and World Technology Awards, many other energy and environment recognitions, and Germany’s highest civilian honor (the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit). A Harvard and Oxford dropout, former Oxford don, honorary US architect, Swedish engineering academician, and 2011–18 member of the US National Petroleum Council, he has taught at ten universities—most recently the US Naval Postgraduate School and Stanford (spring 2007 MAP/Ming Visiting Professor, half-time 2020–24 Adjunct Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, then Lecturer)—teaching only subjects he hasn’t formally studied, so as to cultivate beginner’s mind. In 2009, Time named him one of the world’s 100 most influential people; Foreign Policy, one of the 100 top global thinkers; and Stanford's Scopus analysis, in the top 2% of world scientists.. His most recent books, mostly coauthored, include Natural Capitalism (1999), Small Is Profitable (2002), Winning the Oil Endgame (2004), The Essential Amory Lovins (2011), Reinventing Fire (2011), and a volume of aviation essays (2022–24, aspenflyright.org). His avocations include fine-art landscape photography (the profession of his wife Judy Hill Lovins, www.judyhill.com), music, writing, orangutans, great-ape language, linguistics, and Taoist thought.
COURSES: Lovins and Dr. Joel Swisher PE, as CEE Adjunct Professors, cotaught in 2024 iterations 11–12 of their flagship course applying whole-system thinking and integrative design for radical energy efficiency and profitable climate solutions: CEE 107R, CEE 207R. They will next offer it in Winter and Spring Quarters 2025.

Samuel Low
Ph.D. Student in Aeronautics and Astronautics, admitted Winter 2023
BioSamuel Low is a Ph.D. candidate in the Stanford Space Rendezvous Laboratory, advised by Professor Simone D'Amico. Sam graduated from Stanford with an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics (2023) and from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) with a B.Sc. in Engineering Product Development (2018). His broad interests are in the guidance, navigation, control and autonomy of distributed space systems, such as formations and swarm satellites. His research focus is on enabling precise and robust state estimation between distributed spacecraft, centered on sensor/data fusion with carrier phase differential GNSS, with immediate applications to flight missions such as the VISORS and SWARM-EX missions. He had worked previously in DSO National Laboratories, Singapore, on space mission design and on developing navigation algorithms for Singapore's first formation flying satellite mission. He received the DSO Postgraduate Fellowship (2021), the Tan Kah Kee Postgraduate Scholarship (2021), the DSO SOAR Scholarship (2017), and the Asian Leadership Program Scholarship (2015-2018) jointly awarded by SUTD and Zhejiang University. In his spare time, he enjoys photography, painting, and outdoor activities.

Alarice Cheng-Yi Lowe

BioDr. Lowe joined the School of Medicine faculty in 2019. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from MIT and her medical degree at UCSD, prior to residency and cytology fellowship at UCLA. In 2011, she joined the faculty at Brigham and Women's Hospital where she developed a research focus on Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs) and the application of new technology to improve clinical and molecular diagnostics. Clinically, her interests focus on Cytopathology and Genitourinary Pathology.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe laboratory is focused on the relationship between injury, wound healing, and cancer. Esophageal, gastric, and pancreatic cancers are a focus. We are particularly interested in the regulation of cell signaling by EGFR, the EGF receptor. In addition to cancer pathogenesis, active projects include the development of new diagnostic assays and drugs.

BioChenery Lowe, Ph.D., CGC, is a genetic counselor and healthcare communication researcher. She received her ScM in Genetic Counseling from the Johns Hopkins University/ National Institutes of Health Genetic Counseling Training Program in 2018. Chenery received her Ph.D. in Social and Behavioral Sciences from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2022, where she later served as an assistant scientist and academic director for the JHU/NIH genetic counseling program. Clinically, she has provided genetic counseling in immunology and adult oncology settings. She has taught graduate-level courses on interpersonal communication in health care, health literacy, and social and behavioral research in genetic counseling. Her research interests are in the areas of patient-provider communication, health equity, implicit bias, communication skills training interventions, and the ethics of interpersonal influence in medical care.
