BioSonia Rios-Ventura is a clinical research coordinator associate for the Stanford School of Medicine, department of Cancer Genetics and Genomics. She received her B.A. in anthropology and intensive sociology from the University of California Santa Cruz.
She is also the family health navigator for the Genetic Information and Family Testing (GIFT) Study. GIFT's mission is to help families beat cancer. It aims to save lives through education and communication about cancer risk and prevention in families. When someone learns they have a genetic mutation that increases their risk for cancer, it means their family members might also be at risk. For too long, the difficult job of talking about family cancer risk has fallen to the cancer patients alone. GIFT is here to make it easier for people to share this important information and give family members an easy way to get genetic testing to learn about their personal cancer risk. GIFT is an online program developed by cancer patients, family members, and doctors that offers a new way to, 1. Share life-saving information about family cancer risk and ways to lower that risk, 2.Connect interested family members to easy, at-home genetic testing. -

Dan Riskin

Staff, Surgery - General SurgeryBioDr. Riskin is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at Stanford University and a physician–entrepreneur focused on the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare. His work spans clinical practice, company building, and public policy, with a focus on using clinical data to improve care.
He has founded and led multiple healthcare technology companies applying artificial intelligence to clinical data, with products used by leading health systems, pharmaceutical companies, and insurers and influencing the care of millions of patients. He is the CEO of Verantos, a healthcare AI company focused on improving the reliability of real-world clinical data used in research and care.
Dr. Riskin has contributed to health policy in the United States and internationally, including Congressional testimony related to the 21st Century Cures Act and service on the U.S. Health Information Technology Advisory Committee (HITAC). His work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and Forbes.
Dr. Riskin received his MD from Boston University, completed residency in surgery at UCLA, and fellowship training in critical care and acute care surgery at Stanford University. He is board-certified in surgery, critical care, palliative care, and clinical informatics. He also holds an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was a Stanford Biodesign Innovation Fellow. -
Jessica Riskin
Frances and Charles Field Professor of History
BioJessica Riskin received her B.A. from Harvard University and her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. She taught at MIT before coming to Stanford, and has also taught at Iowa State University and at Sciences Po, Paris. Her research interests include early modern science, politics and culture and the history of scientific explanation.
Riskin is the author of Science in the Age of Sensibility: The Sentimental Empiricists of the French Enlightenment (2002), which won the American Historical Association's J. Russell Major Prize for best book in English on any aspect of French history, and the editor of Genesis Redux: Essays in the History and Philosophy of Artificial Life (2007) and, with Mario Biagioli, of Nature Engaged: Science in Practice from the Renaissance to the Present (2012). She is also the author of The Restless Clock: A History of the Centuries-Long Debate over What Makes Living Things Tick (2016), which won the 2021 Patrick Suppes Prize in the History of Science from the American Philosophical Society. -
Joshua Daniel Rittenberg, MD

BioDr. Rittenberg is a board-certified, fellowship-trained physiatrist with more than 20 years of experience specializing in rehabilitative and interventional spine care. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
In his clinical practice, Dr. Rittenberg provides expert care for painful spine disorders. He excels at interventional pain management and has extensive experience in a variety of spinal disorders, including sports-related spine injuries
Prior to joining Stanford, he was co-chair of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department for Kaiser Northern California. Additionally, he spent 10 years at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, where he served as Medical Director of Musculoskeletal and Spine Procedures at the Spine and Sports Rehabilitation Center. He was a consultant in the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation Department of Orthopedic Surgery and an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
Dr. Rittenberg excels at the diagnosis and treatment of disorders involving the spine. He delivers state-of-the-art treatment for pain, emphasizing non-operative and minimally invasive approaches.
For each patient, he prepares a personalized plan of care designed to be both comprehensive and compassionate. In every case, his goals are to relieve symptoms and enable the best possible quality of life.
Dr. Rittenberg lectures nationally and internationally, has chaired numerous continuing education courses for physicians, and has published original research, review articles, and book chapters in the areas of interventional and rehabilitative spine care.
He has volunteered and held leadership positions in the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the North American Spine Society, and the International Pain and Spine Intervention Society. He is the current President of the International Pain and Spine Intervention Society(IPSIS).
Dr. Rittenberg has earned honors and recognition for his achievements. They include being named to the Healthgrades Honor Roll and recognized as a regional top doctor by Castle Connolly, the research and information resource for health care consumers. -

Current Role at StanfordI am the Administrative Services Manager in the Department of Psychology within the School of Humanities and Sciences. I manage the Faculty Administrative Associates who support the faculty of our department which offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees in Psychology, and conducts research in the areas of affective science, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, neuroscience, and social psychology. In addition to being the Administrative Services Manager, I also provide administrative support to Professors Grill-Spector, Wine, Fernald, McClelland, Gerstenberg, Goodman, Starck, Ellis and Gwilliams their students, and research groups. I am involved with the grant and IRB management for the research protocols of my faculty. I also provide website administration for our department.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsModern applications demand power capabilities beyond what is presently achievable. High performance systems need high power density and bandwidth that are difficult to achieve.
Power density can be improved with better semiconductors and passive componets, and by reducing the energy storage requirements of the system. By dramatically increasing switching frequency it is possible to reduce size of power converters. I'm interested in high performance/frequency circuits switching >10 MHz. -
Lucia Rivera Lara, MD, MPH

BioDr. Rivera Lara is a Clinical Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she is highly regarded for her clinical excellence and dedication to education and research in the field of neurology. She treats patients suffering from strokes, cerebral hemorrhages, and seizures. Dr. Rivera Lara completed her residency in Neurology at the University of Massachusetts and her fellowship in Neurocritical Care at Johns Hopkins University. During her fellowship, she received a Research Award from the American Academy of Neurology/American Brain Foundation.
Dr. Rivera Lara joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in 2014, initially as an Instructor and later as an Assistant Professor, working in the neurocritical care unit and the Neurology inpatient and consult service. She earned her Master’s in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2017, which equipped her with a broader perspective on research and global health.
Today, her research is at the forefront of addressing critical issues in neurology. Dr. Rivera Lara focuses on developing neuromonitoring algorithms aimed at optimizing cerebral blood flow delivery for patients with acute brain injuries, with the goal of preventing cerebral ischemia and subsequent complications. By studying cerebral autoregulation and employing multimodal brain monitoring techniques, she aims to mitigate secondary injuries, ultimately helping to reduce cognitive impairment and decrease disability in these vulnerable patients. Her findings have been published in journals including Critical Care Medicine, Neurocritical Care, Stroke, Seizure, the Journal of Neurosurgery and Anesthesiology, and JAMA, and she has presented at the International Stroke Conference, the Critical Care Conference, and at meetings of the American Academy of Neurology and the Neurocritical Care Society.
Dr. Rivera Lara is a Global Health Faculty Fellow at Stanford University for her work on neurological health disparities in Latin America. She founded "Conferencias de Cuidado Neurocritico," which are bimonthly lectures on Neurocritical Care Emergencies and Stroke Management conducted in Spanish via Zoom, attended by residents, fellows, and intensivists from Latin American countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, and others. -
Rafael Rivera Lugo
Postdoctoral Scholar, Biology
BioRafael Rivera-Lugo is a Stanford Science Fellow postdoctoral associate in the Department of Biology and the ChEM-H Institute at Stanford University, where he works in the laboratory of Christine Jacobs-Wagner. His postdoctoral research focuses on how the Lyme disease bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi establishes infection using novel mouse models to dissect the immune and cellular mechanisms that drive tissue pathology during infection. He is also developing metabolically active, non-replicating bacterial platforms for vaccine applications.
Rafael completed his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, in the laboratory of Daniel A. Portnoy. His doctoral work revealed how the intracellular pathogen Listeria monocytogenes acquires and utilizes flavins (riboflavin derivatives) during infection, reshaping our understanding of bacterial metabolism and immune evasion. This work produced multiple high-impact publications in journals including PNAS, eLife, Nature, and mBio, and was recognized with the Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award and the Nicholas Cozzarelli Prize. He received his B.S. in Biology and Biotechnology, Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Puerto Rico at Ponce.
Beyond research, Rafael is deeply committed to expanding access to scientific careers. He has mentored students from historically underserved communities through programs at Stanford and UC Berkeley, co-founded organizations to support peers navigating academic science, and has been a consistent advocate for creating welcoming and rigorous scientific environments for all students.
