Neida Basheer Ahmad
Social Science Research Scholar, Annamma Program
BioNeida Basheer Ahmad, Ph.D., is a Social Science Researcher in the Walkout! Lab for Youth Justice, focusing on a project that aims to understand the education paths that lead to and through incarceration for youth to shed light on the impact of multiple oppressions and intersectional challenges on their lives. She earned her Ph.D. from the Race, Inequality, and Language in Education program in the Stanford Graduate School of Education in 2024. Her research interests include intersectionality, critical policy analysis, language policy, bilingual education, raciolinguistic ideologies, ethnic studies, and culturally sustaining pedagogies. Her research explores the co-naturalization of language and race in language policy making and implementation. She is also concerned about asymmetrical power relationships in research and seeks to create reciprocal relationships with her research participants.

Bethany D. Bass
Ph.D. Student in Education, admitted Autumn 2024
Master of Arts Student in History, admitted Summer 2026
Graduate Program Assistant, GSE Centers and Programs
Research Assistant-2, GSE Centers and ProgramsBioBethany D. Bass is a PhD student studying Race, Inequality, Language and Education & History of Education at the Stanford Graduate School of Education. Her work focuses on the relationship between historically Black schools and Black communities, chronicling Black education in South Dallas, Texas, from the late 1930s to the present. Their work uses Black geographic thought, digital humanities, and oral history to listen to how Black elders and young people create sites of Black livingness (McKittrick 2021, Quashie 2021) and learning inside and outside of formal school settings.
Their scholarship is supported by the EDGE: Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education Fellowship and The Stanford Interdisciplinary Graduate Fellowship (SIGF) through the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education. -

Keith Bowen
Director, Learning Design Challenge, SAL Digital Learning
BioFor 20+ years, I have worked in the fields of international relief, development, and conflict resolution, building capacity in Eastern Europe, the Balkans, South Africa, Rwanda, Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, as well as educating students in the U.S., Europe, and other countries who aspire to work in these fields.
Academics & Film
I've worked as an academic and filmmaker, creating educational documentaries on liberation movements around the world, which I've then used with university students in my classrooms. I've had several programs distributed by the Discovery Channel, which has been rewarding, but what has been especially remarkable to me is the response of my students. I've come to appreciate the power of narrative and immediacy of film to transform students' perceptions of the world and their place in it.
Learning Design
Along with an emphasis on narrative and immediacy, I've designed interactive programs that draw students into learning through exploration and discovery - with a dynamically shifting experience based on student choice and response. I've also designed learning programs featuring advanced multiplayer simulations with both live and online interaction.
Scale
I've taken this work to scale. In my work for the U.S. Government and international humanitarian organizations, I've designed courses that have been completed by tens of thousands of students and practitioners, not only at the State Department, USAID, relief agencies, and universities in the U.S., but also at comparable institutions in other countries, and even in internet cafes and refugee camps around the world. I've earned about a dozen awards for these efforts and have delivered presentations on them for the Under Secretary of State, the Senate Appropriations Committee, representatives of the the 57 countries of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the 35 countries of the Organization for American States, and others.
Virtual Exchange & "Wicked" Global Problems
I am continuing this work at Stanford. My focus now is designing media and technology programs to bring university students in the U.S. and other high-income countries into extended contact with counterpart students in fragile states and zones of conflict to address complex problems that no single country can solve on its own. As students work collaboratively to address these "wicked" problems, we measure advances in learning and shifts in attitude through qualitative and quantitative methods.
I have also launched and serve as Director for the Stanford Learning Design Challenge, which supports students across campus who seek to leverage research in the learning sciences, methodologies in human-centered design, and breakthroughs in emerging technology to change what’s possible in teaching and learning. https://edtech.stanford.edu/
This is an extraordinary time for those who design media and technology solutions for teaching and learning. Blended in smart combinations, especially with traditional in-person learning, the new tools we have are powerful:
- Visual narrative, through its expression in digital cinema
- Expanding and interconnecting networks of lifelong learners
- Complex human interaction, including multiplayer games and simulations
- Complex machine interaction, including generative AI, dynamically responsive to user needs
- Statistical data analysis, upon which to base informed, iterative human-centered design
- Worldwide electronic distribution, especially to inexpensive mobile devices
If we do this right, the world will be much better for it. -

Samuel Enrique Camacho
Masters Student in Civil and Environmental Engineering, admitted Autumn 2025
Graduate Program Assistant, Domingue ProgramBioNative of Maracaibo, Venezuela. I am a nonprofit leader, a graduate research assistant, a perennial intern, and a recovering investment banker. After working in banking and helping early-stage startups in the sustainability space navigate funding rounds, I decided to pursue graduate studies in environmental engineering to expand my technical foundation in sustainability and renewable energy technology.
My previous research focused on traditional energy, and I have presented at over 10 economic conferences. I have also interned at a YC-backed startup, in consulting, banking, venture capital, corporate, and various nonprofits and universities. In my spare time, I co-lead a Latin American education and arts nonprofit in Houston. Other interests include worrying about Venezuelan inflation, visiting small towns in the U.S., coding in Stata, and hiking. -

Alee Lee Capps
Casual - Non-Exempt,
Staff,BioAlee (Alexandra) Lee Capps is an early childhood educator and Stanford University affiliate working with the Graduate School of Education to support research in local Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) classrooms. She has worked in early childhood education for more than 15 years and currently serves as Director of The Learning Tree Preschool, a family-run preschool in Fremont, California, that has served the community since 1980.
Alee’s connection to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community is more recent and deeply personal. She is the hearing mother of a Deaf child born with bilateral microtia and atresia. Since her daughter’s birth, Alee and her family have been learning American Sign Language (ASL) and navigating early language access, education, and services for DHH children and their families. These experiences have made early language access and the prevention of language deprivation especially important to her.
At The Learning Tree Preschool, Alee has worked to make the early childhood environment more accessible and inclusive for DHH children and families, including creating opportunities for ASL and spoken English to be part of the school community. She is also a co-founder of Growing Peace Enrichment, which provides inclusive enrichment and after-school opportunities for children, and founder of Born to Belong, a community initiative focused on creating more inclusive and accessible opportunities for children and families.
Alee approaches her work in the Deaf community as a hearing parent and educator who is still learning. She strongly believes in Deaf leadership and that the voices, expertise, and lived experiences of Deaf people should guide work intended to serve Deaf children and communities.
Alee is especially interested in early language access, preventing language deprivation, and creating more inclusive early childhood experiences for DHH children and their families. Through her work at Stanford, she hopes to contribute her perspective as an early childhood educator and parent while continuing to learn from Deaf educators, researchers, families, and the broader Deaf community. -
