Manuel Razo-Mejia

BioI was born and raised in central Mexico, in a state called Guanajuato. Although I was trained as an engineer due to social circumstances, my passion always resided in the natural world and the way to understand it that physics offered. Guided by this passion, I did my Ph.D. with Rob Phillips at Caltech, working at the interface between physics and biology. For my postdoc, I want to bring the Physical Biology mindset to the question of evolution. That is why I joined Dmitri Petrov's lab to study the evolutionary dynamics of microbial populations from a theory-experiment dialogue perspective.

Anders Rydstrom
Postdoctoral Scholar, Biology
BioAnders Rydstrom is a Postdoctoral Scholar with the Natural Capital Project and is investigating the links between exposure to nature areas and health. His research primarily focuses on conducting randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with uses of multimodal data sources such as accelerometers, ecological momentary assessments, behavioral outcomes and biometric health data. Anders received his Ph.D. in psychology and neuroscience from Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where he analyzed heterogeneity of treatment effects in lifestyle oriented RCT’s for prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease and cognitive impairment. He has also conducted research within cognitive training and emotion regulation. He holds an M.Sc. in psychology from Lund University, Lund, Sweden and has also clinical experience from working as a licensed healthcare psychologist in Scandinavia.

Johannes Daniel Scharwies

BioJohannes received his BSc from the Leibniz Universität Hannover (Germany) in Plant Biotechnology in the Fruit Science laboratory of Prof. Moritz Knoche. Inspired by research on water relations of fruit in the Knoche laboratory, Johannes joined the group of Prof. Stephen Tyerman at The University of Adelaide (Australia) with funding through the German Academic Exchange Service. Initially, his work focused on hydraulic properties of grape clusters for which he received his MSc in Agricultural Science. Afterwards, he joined the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology through the Tyerman laboratory and specialised in molecular plant physiology by studying the role of aquaporins in plant responses to drought for a PhD. He investigated aquaporins, which are molecular channels in plant membranes that provide a gating mechanism for water fluxes and other small molecules, through a combination of gene expression analysis and utilization of transgenic overexpression and CRISPR-Cas9 knockout lines. His work was funded by the highly competitive Adelaide Scholarship International and a Supplementary Scholarship provided by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology. In April 2018, Johannes joined the laboratory of Prof. José Dinneny at Stanford University as a Postdoctoral Scholar.
Johannes' research focuses on plant hydraulics from a molecular scale up to whole plants. He is interested on how plants perceive and adapt to changes in the environment in particular related to water. This ranges from developmental decisions to molecular control of water movement, for example through aquaporins.
In the group of Prof. José Dinneny, he is investigating how lateral root branching responds to moisture availability, a phenomenon termed hydropatterning. He uses his expertise to design novel phenotyping systems to characterise lateral root branching across a wide range of diverse corn inbred lines. These technologies enable the use of population genetics approaches to detect genotype-phenotype associations with the aim to understand causal genetic variants and study how phenotypic plasticity is shaped through breeding. -

Mehrnoosh Tahani

BioMehrnoosh Tahani currently holds a Banting fellowship (sponsored by the government of Canada) hosted at Stanford University and a KIPAC fellowship. She was a research associate (Covington fellow) with the National Research Council Canada at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory from Sep 2019 to Sep 2022. She received her PhD in 2019 from the University of Calgary.
Her research interests include magnetic fields, molecular clouds, star formation, Faraday rotation, dust polarization, interstellar medium, radio astronomy, magnetohydrodynamic simulations, the 3D shape of magnetic fields of star-forming clouds, and novel techniques for probing interstellar magnetic fields. She is involved in international collaborations such as BISTRO, CCAT-prime, JCMT-transients, and POSSUM.
Mehrnoosh has held teaching positions as a sessional instructor, guest lecturer, and graduate teaching assistant, and has received teaching awards. Her current service roles include co-organizing the Open Cultural Astronomy Forum seminars (https://openculturalastronomyforum.github.io/).

Dr. Victoria Watson-Zink

BioI am an evolutionary marine invertebrate biologist, and I use bioinformatics and high-throughput sequencing technologies (genomics and transcriptomics) to explore life-history evolution in terrestrial crabs.
I completed my B.S. in Biological Sciences (concentration in Ecology and Evolution) at Cornell University in 2013 with academic and research honors. While there, I studied climate science, marine biology, and coral reef biodiversity via several internships/fellowships at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Indonesian Biodiversity Research Center in Bali, Indonesia, and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC.
After graduating, I worked for two years as a lab manager and research technician at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, CA, which is where I discovered my passion for understanding life-history evolution in terrestrial crabs. I began my PhD in Population Biology at UC Davis in 2015, and as a Fellow of both the NSF GRFP and the NSF EAPSI programs, I have traveled extensively across Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean to observe and collect genetic samples from several land crab species.
As a disabled Black woman in evolution and ecology, I am also passionate about increasing, supporting, and retaining diversity of all kinds in STEM, and during my PhD, I served as the first Graduate Student Advisor to the Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the College of Biological Sciences at UC Davis. I graduated as the first Black PhD from my degree program, and was also awarded the Merton Love Award for Best Dissertation in Ecology and Evolution for my dissertation work.
I am now a postdoc at Stanford University as a joint Stanford Science Fellow/NSF PRFB Fellow and hope to one day launch my own research lab studying major evolutionary transitions. -
Yecun Wu

BioDr. Yecun Wu is a postdoctoral scholar in the physics department at Stanford University, working with Prof. Steven Chu. His research interests encompass a range of interdisciplinary fields, including quantum sensing, quantum materials, energy storage, and sustainability. Dr. Wu's current research aims to tackle the pressing issues and challenges in the energy field by utilizing quantum technology. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, where he worked with Prof. Yi Cui and collaborating closely with Prof. Harold Y. Hwang. During his doctoral studies, he developed innovative methods to control the properties of two-dimensional materials using guest species, which opened new avenues for their use in quantum and energy applications.

Lin Xin
Postdoctoral Scholar, Physics
BioLin Xin is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Physics Department at Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology, following undergraduate studies at Shanghai Jiaotong University. His current research centers on advancing optical control of interactions among laser-cooled atoms, with an eye towards applications in quantum simulation, metrology, and computation. He has developed protocols in quantum optimal control for entanglement-enhanced eigenstates in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates.
