Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Czechowicz’s research is aimed at understanding how hematopoietic stem cells interact with their microenvironment in order to subsequently modulate these interactions to improve bone marrow transplantation and unlock biological secrets that further enable regenerative medicine broadly. This work can be applied across a variety of disease states ranging from rare genetic diseases, autoimmune diseases, solid organ transplantation, microbiome-augmentation and cancer.

BioGenevieve D’souza MD, FASA is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Pediatric Anesthesia division of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University. She is a Board-certified Pediatric Anesthesiologist , Fellowship trained Pediatric Pain Doctor, and trained in Medical Acupuncture.
She is a practicing Chronic Pediatric Pain Doctor at Stanford Medicine Children's Health and is also part of the Acute Pain Service. She is the Interim Medical Director of the Pediatric Pain Division. She is also the Director of the Pediatric Anesthesia Resource Center at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.
She is also the Senior Editor for the Visual Pearl Series For the Society of Pediatric Pain Medicine and on the Board of Directors for Society of Pediatric Pain Medicine. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAs a physician-scientist involved in the care of pediatric patients and developing novel pediatric molecular imaging technologies, my goal is to link the fields of nanotechnology and medical imaging towards more efficient diagnoses and image-guided therapies. Our research team develops novel imaging techniques for improved cancer diagnosis, for image-guided-drug delivery and for in vivo monitoring of cell therapies in children and young adults.

Rebecca Dang

BioDr. Rebecca Dang is an Instructor in the Division of General Pediatrics at Stanford University. She earned her medical degree at Georgetown School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. She also completed pediatric hospital medicine fellowship and a master’s program in clinical research and epidemiology at Stanford University. Dr. Dang provides clinical care for children on the pediatric ward and newborn nursery.
Dr. Dang’s research interest focuses on high-value pediatric care, which she hopes to improve through building evidence for common, understudied practices. Common practices that are ubiquitous throughout pediatric medicine are temperature measurement and management. Despite temperature measurement and the subsequent detection of ‘normal’ or ‘abnormal’ values driving clinical decision making, these temperature thresholds may be outdated or poorly defined. Dr. Dang has led many projects on temperature-related topics, including routine temperature measurement at well-child visits, pediatric temperature percentiles, risk factors for and outcomes of neonatal hypothermia in the newborn nursery, and newborn temperature norms. This work has led to first-author publications in the high-impact journals of Academic Pediatrics, Pediatrics, Journal of Pediatrics, JAMA Network Open, and Hospital Pediatrics. She has secured continual institutional and foundation funding, including a Maternal & Child Health Research Institute clinical trainee award and master’s tuition program, Gerber Foundation main and novice research award, the Department of Pediatrics’ Bridge-to-K Program, and the PEDSnet Scholars Program. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI have extensive experience in the development of global health innovations and in working to test and scale-up health interventions. At Stanford University, I am playing a leading role in developing global women and children’s health research and educational programs, including the establishment of a Global Center for Gender Equality at Stanford University. My research focuses on advancing child health and development in low resource settings and advancing gender equality and health globally, and includes several applications of artificial intelligence. Before joining Stanford, I was Senior Fellow at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), where I led the development of initiatives to address gender inequalities and empower women and girls. Prior to this role, I served as the BMGF Director of Family Health, leading strategy development and implementation across maternal, newborn and child health, nutrition, and family planning. In this role, I was responsible for investments ranging from scientific discovery to intervention development and delivery of interventions at scale. I worked closely with the Discovery team to shape discovery and development investments and was a co-founder of the Saving Lives at Birth Development Grand Challenge, the Putting Women and Girls at the Center of Development Grand Challenge, and the Healthy Birth, Growth and Development initiative. Based on these experiences, I understand how to identify knowledge gaps and generate evidence of impact for new interventions, and how to utilize evidence to influence the policy dialogue leading to programmatic adoption and scale-up of interventions in low income settings. As Director of Family Health, I also co-led the development and implementation of the BMGF global health strategy for India, which cuts across multiple health and development sectors. Before joining BMGF, I was Associate Professor and Founding Director of the International Center for Advancing Neonatal Health in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. I led the development of newborn health research, including numerous facility- and community-based maternal and child health research trials. Before joining Johns Hopkins, I was Senior Research Advisor for the $50M Saving Newborn Lives program of Save the Children-US, where I led the development and implementation of the global research strategy for newborn health and survival.

BioSujal Dave, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Computation Lab at Stanford University.
He recently completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Calgary under the supervision of Dr. Artem Korobenko, where he developed consistent reduced order modeling frameworks for turbulent flows using variational multiscale methods and stabilized finite elements. His doctoral research advanced large-scale wind turbine wake simulations with applications to renewable energy and environmental flows. -

We are interested in understanding childhood cancers through the lens of normal development. Further, individual tumors are composed of heterogeneous cell populations, not all cells being equal in their ability to respond to treatment or to repopulate a tumor. Thus, we take single cell approach to determine populations of clinical relevance.

On Partial Leave from 02/15/2026 To 10/18/2026Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur Neuromuscular Division coordinates a comprehensive effort to conquer peripheral nerve and muscle disorders, including the muscular dystrophies, motor neuron disorders, neuromuscular junction abnormalities, and peripheral neuropathies. With patients and families foremost in mind, we have had success defining and combating these diseases, with research focused on identifying genetic causes, developing novel treatment, and maximizing patient function by optimizing current management.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Stanford-LPCH Vaccine Program provides an infrastructure for conducting clinical studies of vaccines in children and adults. We conduct immunology studies of seasonal influenza vaccines in twins, in a longitudinal cohort of young and elderly adults and studies of various vaccine candidates for NIH and industry. Additionally, we were a CDC Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment site for 10 years working on safety issues concerning licensed vaccines.

Claudia Del Toro Runzer

BioClaudia Del Toro Runzer is a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University specializing in gene therapy and regenerative medicine. Her current research focuses on developing gene editing strategies for inherited disorders, including GNE myopathy and Gaucher disease. She works on advancing precision gene engineering approaches in human hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells and other clinically relevant cell types, with the goal of enabling safe and durable therapeutic correction.
Dr. Del Toro Runzer earned her PhD in Tissue Engineering from the MERLN Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine at Maastricht University. Her doctoral research focused on chemically modified mRNA therapeutics for bone regeneration, where she investigated molecular design, intracellular trafficking, and biomaterial-assisted delivery systems to enhance protein expression and osteogenic outcomes. Her work resulted in multiple first-author publications in leading journals, including Advanced Functional Materials, Bone Research, Materials Today, and Molecular Therapy: Nucleic Acids.
Prior to her PhD, she completed an M.Sc. in Regenerative Biology and Medicine at Technische Universität Dresden and a B.Sc. in Biotechnology Engineering at Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey. Her international training spans Germany, the Netherlands, Mexico, and the United States, with research experience in organoid systems, tissue regeneration, biomaterials engineering, and microphysiological platforms. -

She was a site co-Investigator for the I-PASS study at Stanford and the site Principal Investigator for the PCORI grant, Bringing I-PASS to the Bedside: A Communication Bundle to Improve Patient Safety and Experience. She is involved in a number of quality and process improvement related activities at LPCHS. She has led trainee education in quality and performance improvement and is a fellow in the Stanford Medicine Center for Improvement. Her research interests include communication among the care team (inclusive of patients and families), patient flow throughout the hospital, and value centered improvement.

BioDr. Sharon DiPierro is a pediatrician and mother of three who is devoted to improving child and community health. She has teamed up with the local health department and county parks to prescribe nature to improve physical, mental, and social wellness. She is working to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables for all families. She also enjoys teaching Stanford pediatric residents.
Since 2013, Dr. DiPierro has worked at Ravenswood Family Health Center, a federally qualified health center that serves mostly immigrant families in East Palo Alto. She completed her undergraduate and medical degrees at Brown University, and her pediatric training at UC Davis. -

BioDr. Lyn Dos Santos is Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. She did her Pediatrics Internship and Residency at Rush Presbyterian Medical Center in Chicago, IL and a Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, Wayne State University, Detroit MI. Following her clinical training, she practiced Pediatric Emergency Pediatrics for about 10 years in the Midwest and moved onto Pediatric Hospital medicine at Stanford in 2002. She is currently the Medical Director of the Pediatric Hospitalist Program at John Muir Medical Center; her special clinical interests are in Safety and Quality and surgical co-management.
She also has a special interest in leadership and building resilient, cohesive teams and has become a champion for Physician Wellness in Hospital Medicine. -

Elizabeth Egan

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMalaria is a parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitos that is a leading cause of childhood mortality globally. Public health efforts to control malaria have historically been hampered by the rapid development of drug resistance. The goal of our research is to understand the molecular determinants of critical host-pathogen interactions in malaria, with a focus on the erythrocyte host cell. Our long-term goal is to develop novel approaches to prevent or treat malaria and improve child health.

Vanessa El Kamari

BioVanessa El Kamari, MD, is a physician-scientist in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine at Stanford University and a member of the David Relman Laboratory. Her research investigates how host–microbe interactions in the small intestine regulate mucosal immunity, barrier integrity, and systemic inflammation in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
Her current studies use non-invasive sampling of the small intestine in conditions such as celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, and environmental enteropathy. She applies an integrative, multi-omic approach—combining microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, and computational biology—to define spatial immune–microbial networks along the human gut.
Before joining Stanford, Dr. El Kamari’s research focused on inflammation and immune activation in chronic HIV infection, where she identified gut barrier dysfunction as a key driver of systemic inflammation and cardiometabolic complications. She also led intervention studies targeting immune activation and endothelial dysfunction in HIV, work that laid the foundation for her current efforts to apply similar mechanistic approaches to autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. -

Susan Payne Etheridge
Adjunct Clinical Professor, Pediatrics - Cardiology
BioDr. Etheridge is a board-certified pediatric cardiologist and electrophysiologist. Since beginning her tenure in Pediatric Cardiology, her research focus has centered on Long QT Syndrome (LQTS) and other genetic disorders leading to sudden death in the young. She directed local and multi-center collaborative projects concerning LQTS, supraventricular tachycardia and Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome and Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. She has actively participated in multicenter projects of genetic conditions associated with sudden death in the young, including Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia (CPVT), Timothy Syndrome, Andersen-Tawil Syndrome, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, sudden death in athletes, and fetal LQTS. She was the local PI for multicenter projects on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, fetal and nonfetal LQTS, Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, Timothy Syndrome and CPVT. She is an an invited speaker at local, national, and international meetings where she speaks largely on the genetic susceptibility to sudden death in the young and WPW. She has published book chapters and invited editorials and articles related to heritable sudden death conditions and sports participation and arrhythmias in congential heart disease.
Her experience as a pediatric electrophysiologist, a Fellow in the Heart Rhythm Society, past present of the Pediatric and Congenital Arrhythmia Society, member of the America College of Cardiology Electrophysiology Committee and Vice President of the Sudden Arrhythmia Death Foundation underscores her interest in and service to children and adults with arrhythmic disease. Her years on the American Board of Pediatrics and her past leadership role within the fellowship speak to her dedication to the next generation of pediatric cardiologitsts. Dr. Etheridge created and led the University of Utah Inherited Arrhythmia clinic. This is a collaborative clinic that focuses on children and adults with familial sudden death conditions with input from genetics, adult and pediatric electrophysiology and child psychology. The goal was the pre-symptomatic assessment and sudden death prevention in patients with inherited arrhythmia conditions and care for the child and the entire family. The team followed the nationally defined protocols for this assessment and engage our research, genetics and adult electrophysiology colleagues in this assessment. She is embarking upon a similar role at Stanford University. As the Vice President of the SADS Foundation, she is intimately involved with families with these conditions. She takes part in and has developed educational seminars concerning these conditions as part of her involvement with SADS. She often faces questions concerning sports participation in children and young adults with inherited conditions that put children at risk for sudden death. She is a part of the writing group for a recently published consensus document on return to play with heart conditions from the Heart Rhythm Society, American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.
She has dedicated some of her clinical work to the care of adults with arrhytmias in the setting of congenital heart disease and has a clinic for this population in California, Alaska and Idaho. She is scheduled to co-chair the upcoming HRS document on arrhythmia management in adults with congenital heart disease.
