Michelle Madore, Ph.D.

Staff, Psych/Public Mental Health & Population SciencesBioDr. Madore is multiracial, Filipina woman working as a Clinical Neuropsychologist at VA Palo Alto Healthcare System (VAPAHCS) in the Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC). Here she serves as the Director of the National Clinical Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Program whose mission is to: 1) increase the availability of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for treatment-resistant depression in Veterans and (2) gain a greater understanding of the treatment efficacy of TMS in our complex Veteran population. She is also the Co-Director of the Sierra Pacific MIRECC Advanced Fellowship at VAPAHCS. Dr. Madore is the Co-PI for studies looking at the clinical efficacy and safety for substance use disorders, specifically methamphetamine and alcohol. Dr. Madore is also a Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) at Stanford University School of Medicine’s Department in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
She received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Cincinnati, where she received specialized training in neuropsychology. Dr. Madore completed her pre-doctoral internship at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). She has completed postdoctoral training focused on clinical neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation research at VA Martinez, San Francisco VA Medical Center and VAPAHCS.
Dr. Madore is involved in several professional organizations and serves in several leadership positions. She is the Editor for the Asian American Journal of Psychology and Deputy Editor for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. -

Dr. McLean’s research focuses on increasing the implementation and reach of evidence-based treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Windy McNerney is the Director of Biological Sciences for the MIRECC at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Palo Alto, and a Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) at Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. McNerney holds a particular passion for not only understanding the neurophysiology and biochemistry of mental health diseases, but also advocating for these invisible diseases. Her research focuses on neurodegeneration, depression, TBI, PTSD, and addiction. She is collaborating with researchers to integrate brain imaging and biochemical markers in hopes to better understand these diseases. She also is taking a lead role at the VA in investigating the biochemistry of magnetic brain stimulation and is the leader of the NeuroNado Laboratory. At Stanford University, she is the professor of two popular courses examining the biological and societal issues surrounding substance use disorder, with a major focus on opioids such as fentanyl. She has individually mentored over 25 students from underrepresented groups in STEM activities and leads monthly seminars aimed at facilitating career development. In her free time, she is a community advocate for the treatment of mental health and educates groups about the dangers of fentanyl.
She earned her BS from UC Davis and her PhD from the University of Notre Dame. While at ND, she interned at NASA Ames on Human Factors Engineering. She then went on to a postdoctoral position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (DOE), and then completed a fellowship at the WRIISC program at the VA and Stanford University.

BioMartin Mumenthaler has a PharmD and a PhD in psychopharmacology from the University of Bern, Switzerland. He holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine where he has been conducting research programs in addiction medicine and psychopharmacology, and teaching and mentoring medical students and residents on a voluntary basis.
Dr. Mumenthaler has also been working in various full-time positions in the pharmaceutical industry as Director in Clinical Development as well as in Medical Affairs, and as a consultant for early-stage pharma- and biotech companies providing advice on designing and conducting clinical trials, and analyzing and interpreting study results, mainly in the field of addiction medicine and pain.
His academic research has focused on the effects of psychoactive drugs on human performance, Aerospace Medicine, Alzheimer’s disease, and addiction medicine, and in these areas he has presented his results internationally and published over twenty-five peer-reviewed scientific articles. He has also served as a reviewer for various scientific journals, and is a member of the Research Society on Alcoholism, and an Associate Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association. -
Seigo Ninomiya

Alisa Marie Olmsted

BioI am a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in interventional treatments for mood disorders, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), esketamine, and intravenous ketamine. I completed an Advanced MD Fellowship at the Sierra Pacific Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC), a Veterans Affairs (VA) Center of Excellence at VA Palo Alto, where my work focused on circuit-based approaches to precision psychiatry. I completed residency at Jefferson University Hospital, where I served as research chief and served on the ethics board, gaining broad clinical experience across inpatient, emergency, consultation-liaison, and addiction psychiatry. My research on Veterans has been published in Nature Mental Health and the Journal of Affective Disorders Reports, while my earlier clinical work was cited in The New York Times. I have provided continuous care to Veterans since medical school, including at the Hunter Holmes VA, where I earned honors, and at the Wilmington VA community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC). My commitment to serving Veterans is informed by a family legacy that includes multiple generations of combat Veterans, a perspective that continues to shape my clinical and research priorities within the VA system.

Ankita Patil

She holds a B.A. in Social Psychology from The College of New Jersey and an M.S. in Community Health and Prevention Research from Stanford University. Her research experience includes work at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Johns Hopkins University, where she examined the health impacts of incarceration, trauma-informed care, and reproductive health among incarcerated populations. Ankita is a co-author of an American Public Health Association policy statement calling for an end to shackling incarcerated patients and has peer-reviewed work on COVID-19 in Massachusetts prisons. Her work bridges research, policy, and community-based advocacy to advance humane public health solutions.

Ali Rahimpour Jounghani

BioMy long-term research interests lie in advancing our understanding of neuroimaging techniques and their application in mapping developmental pathways of brain networks, with a focus on how alterations in these networks contribute to mental health disorders. My academic training and multidisciplinary research background have provided me with expertise in a range of neuroimaging modalities, including functional MRI (fMRI), structural MRI, electroencephalography (EEG), and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).
During my doctoral studies, I investigated the effects of contextually specific, action-based timing behavior on brain responses, as well as the functional impacts of timing behavior in cochlear implant users. These studies provided valuable insights into the temporal dynamics of brain function. My research has also extended to clinical and cognitive applications, such as studying brain functionality in infants in neonatal intensive care units and in adults with brain disorders.
Currently, as a research scientist at Stanford University, my work bridges psychiatry, cognitive science, and biomedical engineering. I focus on refining neuroimaging data analysis techniques and advancing the use of fNIRS and MRI to explore developmental cognition, particularly for ADHD. A significant part of my current research involves the development of a wearable, cost-effective fNIRS platform for precision mental health. Through my work, I aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of brain disorders and to create practical, cutting-edge tools that advance precision mental health care. -

BioI attended U.C. Berkeley for my B.S. degree, the University of Colorado for my MD and U.C. Davis for my psychiatric residency and did a fellowship in Psychiatric Epidemiology at Yale. I have been faculty at the University of Iowa, Harvard and Brown. I have published over a hundred papers in peer reviewed journals, mostly in the areas of anxiety and personality. I also founded a medical society, the Association for Research in Personality Disorders (ARPD).
Currently I am in private practice in San Francisco and teach at Stanford and UCSF. My treatment approaches for psychotherapy include CBT and mindfulness. I also do psychopharmacology which I have taught UCSF for many years.
I am also a board certified forensic psychiatrist in private practice focusing largely on civil cases. -

BioBen Rein, PhD is a neuroscientist by training and science communicator whose research has focused on the neuroscience of empathy, the genetic basis of autism spectrum disorder, and how synaptic deficits modulate social behavior. In his postdoctoral work with Dr. Robert Malenka, Ben characterized the neurobiological mechanism by which MDMA acts as an "empathogen." His research has been honored with awards from the NIH, the Society for Neuroscience, and Sigma Xi.
Outside of the lab, Ben creates educational science videos for an audience of >1 million social media followers. His videos summarize recent research papers, teach neuroscience basics, and debunk viral videos containing misinformation. They have received over 60 million views and been featured on Good Morning America, ABC News, and other major media outlets. Ben has been profiled by Popular Mechanics and Spectrum News, appeared on Entertainment Tonight, and joined over 40 podcasts including StarTalk with Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Ben's science communication efforts have been recognized with awards from the National Academies of Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society for Neuroscience.
Ben currently serves as the Chief Science Officer of the Mind Science Foundation and has served as a scientific/media consultant for more than 35 companies and foundations. Dr. Rosen is board certified in clinical neuropsychology with a geriatric focus. She completed college at Brown University, a clinical psychology Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University, clinical neuropsychology internship at the Long Island Jewish Hospital in New York, and clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Rosen completed specialty research fellowship training at the National Institute on Aging (Intramural Research Training Award) and Stanford (NRSA F32, K01) in functional imaging and noninvasive brain stimulation with support from NIA.
CLINICAL AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Dr. Rosen is Director of Dementia Education at the Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center at the Palo Alto VAHCS. She is also a neuropsychologist and part of the consensus clinical group and education core at the Stanford’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (NIA). Dr. Rosen’s funded research has focused on applying cognitive neuroscience of aging to improve clinical practice in older adults by using cognitive measures, brain imaging, and noninvasive brain stimulation such as TMS. Studies include using fMRI as an outcome measure for cognitive training, studying how to improve the accuracy of transcranial magnetic stimulation targeting with and without image guidance, and using structural MRI to avoid postoperative cognitive decline and improve outcome from carotid vascular procedures. She has a longstanding commitment to neuroethics and leads a feature in the Journal of Alzheimer Disease that focuses on ethical issues in new and emerging AD applications.

BioThe overarching aim of Dr. Scanlon’s research is to develop and evaluate low-cost, pragmatic and clinically translatable methods for improving management of neurodegenerative disease and dementia. To that end, the Caregiver Technology Division of the Scanlon Lab aims to enhance patient- and family-centered care through novel, broadly customizable, and highly scalable caregiver interventions. In parallel, the Neurodegenerative Division of the Scanlon Lab focuses on the development and application of cognitive, neuropsychiatric, and biological markers for the initiation and progression of neurodegeneration.
Dr. Scanlon received his bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and doctorate in Clinical Health Psychology from the University of Miami. After concluding his clinical internship in Geropsychology/Neuropsychology at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), he completed fellowships in Aging and Dementia at Stanford University School of Medicine and VAPAHCS. Dr. Scanlon is currently a VA Career Development Awardee in the Sierra-Pacific Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) and Stanford/VA Aging Clinical Research Center where his work focuses on developing and evaluating low-cost, pragmatic and clinically translatable methods for improving management of neurodegenerative disease and dementia. BioMy main research interest revolves around understanding the general cognitive and affective properties of the mind, and how the prognosis of good and poor mental health status affects the developmental trajectories under chronic stress. To what extent reward-based networks can lead to increased proximity to vulnerability or heightened sensitivity to mental illness, specifically within the context of youth and adolescents, is an area that I am especially interested in. I am most interested in what factors help individuals become more resilient and build a narrative that they can get better with the right treatment practices. I believe that this can be done by combining neuroscience and functional imaging techniques (ex: fMRI, EEG) into the study and practice of clinical psychology.
