Staff, Primary Care and Population HealthBioDr. Hsin, Clinical Professor (Affiliated), is Chief of Palliative Medicine at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. His interests include palliative care education, global health, and compassion cultivation. Dr. Hsin is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Medicine. After completion of his family medicine residency and chief residency at West Suburban Medical Center (Oak Park, IL), he completed his subspecialty training at Harvard's Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program. He is a certified teacher in the Compassion Cultivation Training program with the Compassion Institute. Dr. Hsin has been involved in international health care efforts in Africa and Asia through the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Doctors Without Borders (MSF), and the Stanford/Yale Global Health Scholars Program; he is a Faculty Fellow at Stanford’s Center for Innovation in Global Health.

Dr. Ikeno is a Researcher, Cardiovascular Medicine, Stanford University. In this role, he is responsible for pre clinical studies including GLP for medical devices and also regenerative medicines for cardiovascular diseases. Currently, he is devoting himself to the international regulatory project between Japan and the United States, also known as "Harmonization by Doing", whose focus is to collaborate with regulatory agencies such as FDA, PMDA/MHLW, academia and industries for improving the regulatory process in the 2 largest medtech markets. Dr. Ikeno also devoted himself to found Japan biodesign program which is a collaborative program with University of Tokyo, Osaka University, Tohoku University, Japan Federation Medical Device Association, Ministry of Education Japan and Stanford biodesign program. Currently, Dr. Ikeno serves as the Program Director (US) for Japan Biodesign. Dr. Ikeno is co-founder and board member of US-Japan MedTech Frontier which is a non-profit cooperate to make a trans-pacific eco-system of medical device between Japan and USA.
After 9 years clinical practice as an interventional cardiologist and Family Doctor in rural areas of Japan, Dr. Ikeno came to Stanford as a Researcher and completed his Biodesign Certificate Program. Being part of the ecosystem in Silicon Valley, Dr. Ikeno participated in more than 200 medtech projects and 50 GLP studies as well as in the analysis of clinical trials for cardiovascular medicine (BARI2D, FAME, ReOPEN etc). His other academic consortium projects include Peripheral Academic Research Consortium, Global Consensus Working Group of Optical Coherence Tomography, and Japan-US consensus document for the treatment of critical limb ischemia.
Over the last decade, Dr. Ikeno has served as an advisor for medical device industries and currently serves as a chief medical officer of an incubation fund specific for medtech (Medventure Partners, Inc, Tokyo) as a spin-off from Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) that is the largest government and private partnership fund in Japan. He is also serving as a chair of cardiovascular working group of APAN (Asian Pacific Advanced Network) that contributes the remote education, research activities, and tele-health using a specialized internet network. Dr.Ikeno is also serving as consulting faculty/lecturer roles in several universities in Japan including University of Tokyo, Osaka University, Tsukuba University etc. Dr. Ikeno has authored over 70 peer reviewed publications and textbooks and has been invited to lecture at international medical conferences. Dr. Ikeno is a council member of U.S.- Japan Council which is a non-profit organization by Japanese American. He is serving as a mentor for START-X MED which is an accelerating program for Stanford related entrepreneurs in medical fields.

BioDr. Jahanbani received her PharmD from Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and PhD in pharmacology from Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) and her postdoctoral degree from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). She joined Stanford Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine in June 2012. Her work is focused on better understanding the etiology of chronic complex conditions and multi-morbidity using multi-omics and precision health approaches. She has been leading ME/CFS related disorders multi-omics study combining the power of both family and population approaches and also cofounded “Research To The People at Stanford Program”.

Ahmad Kamal, MD, MS

BioDr. Kamal graduated from the University of California at Irvine in 1995 with a B.S. in Biology and received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1999. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Gastroenterology at Stanford in 2006, during which time he also earned an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology.
In addition to serving as associate chief of the division of gastroenterology at SCVMC, Dr. Kamal is vice chair of internal medicine and director of the clinical research pathway, an innovative program that provides mentoring and protected time for clinical research to internal medicine residents. He is active in teaching trainees at all levels and received an outstanding mentor award from Stanford's biodesign program.
Dr. Kamal has been named a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and has been recognized several times in the "Top Doctors" list. He received the Hospital Quality Institute's C. Duane Dauner Award for his work in specialty care transformation and was one of 6 recipients of Silicon Valley Business Journal's Excellence in Healthcare Award. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as Director of Health Systems Preparedness for Santa Clara County and was awarded a Medal for Outstanding Service by the Board of Supervisors.
Dr. Kamal has also been active in clinical and health services research, authoring over 20 peer-reviewed publications, 40 abstracts, and 7 book chapters. -
Colonel Ronit Katz (Ben-Abraham)

Staff, Primary Care and Population HealthBioColonel (CA) Ronit Katz, MD is The Surgeon General for the CA Guard and a consultant to NASA-Ames Medical Unit. During the current pandemic she has played a vital leadership role in California’s response to the evolving situation and received two NASA-Ames safety awards for her role in COVID -19 prevention.
Professor Katz is Board Certified in Preventive, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine.
Dr. Katz provides her expertise in occupational and environmental medicine to the CA WRIISC team.
Colonel (Dr.) Katz attended Tel Aviv University and The Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel at age 15. She graduated Magna cum Laude from Tel Aviv University, Sackler Medical School. She completed a fellowship in cancer research at Tufts-New England Medical Center, and later served as a Faculty Member at the Harvard University School of Public Health.
She is a recipient of Lawrence Livermore National Lab's (LLNL) “Certificate of Excellence” for outstanding performance in support of the Health Services Department, received the NASA Group Achievement Award, and was selected as one of the "Top Doctors in Silicon Valley."
In 2007, Dr. Katz received The American Medical Association’s (AMA) “Excellence in Medicine and Leadership Award.”
She serves on many boards and committees for local and national professional organizations, including serving in various senior and policy leadership roles in the AMA including Chair of AMA-IMGS Governing council and Delegate to HOD, and representing Stanford University Medical center for AMA-OMSS.
In 2018, Dr. Katz was a keynote speaker at the JMA International Conference on CBRNE/Disaster Preparedness/Counterterrorism in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In 2019 Col. Katz was the Key note speaker for Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) and her presentation was streamed live to other DOE facilities.
Colonel Katz is a national speaker and educator for The American College of Occupational & Environmental Medicine( ACOEM) and The New England Journal of Medicine Resident 360 programs.

BioI am clinically trained as a physician specializing in gastroenterology and hepatology. My research has focused on clinical research of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and obesity-related gastrointestinal diseases, focusing on a population-based study. In addition, my research was not only focused on gastroenterology and was expanded to cardiology, endocrinology, and neurology (sleep medicine). I have experience with large epidemiologic cohort studies as well as clinical trials. This work has resulted in over 250 published papers, including major journals such as Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Gut, Journal of Hepatology, American Journal of Gastroenterology, etc. (as the first and corresponding author). These publications have been cited more than 13,000 times.
