Israt Alam
Senior Research Scientist-Basic Life, Rad/Molecular Imaging Program at Stanford

Dr. Israt Alam is a Senior Scientist in the Radiology Department at Stanford University. She trained in Prof. Sanjiv Sam Gambhir's lab and transitioned to Dr. Michelle James' lab in 2021. Her research focuses on studying lymphocyte activation with the motivation of developing non-invasive imaging tools, to monitor immune dynamics in response to cancer immunotherapy and in immunopathology. Her work has supported the clinical translation of several nuclear imaging agents (small molecules and a biologic) for early detection of cancer and prediction of treatment response, that are being evaluated in oncology trials around the world. She is currently leading the IND-enabling studies for a first in class PET tracer for T cell activation and has also supported several biomarker detection platforms for early disease detection. She was elected as Co-Chair of the "Imaging in cell and immune therapies" (ICIT) interest group for the World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS).

Todd Alamin, MD, FAAOS
Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Alamin is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon and spine surgeon at Stanford Health Care Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. He is director of the Spine Surgery Fellowship Program and the Minimally Invasive Spine Center and a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Alamin completed his spine care and surgery fellowship training at Stanford University School of Medicine/St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Dr. Alamin specializes in advanced, minimally invasive treatments for a range of conditions affecting the spine. He is skilled at relieving pain that results from spinal stenosis, scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, and traumatic injuries. He combines extensive expertise with decades of experience to deliver innovative, personalized care to each of his patients.
Dr. Alamin’s research interests include effective treatments for vertebral fractures, spinal deformities, scoliosis, herniated discs, and spondylolisthesis (when a vertebra slides out of place). As principal investigator for multiple clinical trials and research studies, Dr. Alamin has explored nerve ablation as a treatment for chronic low back pain and motion-preserving lumbar fusion techniques. He uses state-of-the-art medical devices, implants, and technology to make spine surgery more effective and help his patients move without pain.
Dr. Alamin is known around the world for the treatment of spine disorders and injuries. He has published more than 65 articles in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Spine, The Spine Journal, Clinical Spine Surgery, International Journal of Spine Surgery, and Journal of Orthopaedic Research. He has also written several book chapters that focus on diagnosing and treating spine conditions.
A recognized leader in innovative spine surgery techniques, Dr. Alamin has invented dozens of medical devices, methods, and techniques for spine surgery. He holds a number of patents for his inventions, many of which have revolutionized back pain treatments. Physicians around the globe use his techniques and devices to help their patients with spine conditions.
Dr. Alamin has been invited to present at conferences around the globe about spinal fusion procedures, novel techniques to treat spinal stenosis, and the latest medical devices to treat degenerative spondylolisthesis. He has lectured at annual meetings for the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, and the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine.
Dr. Alamin is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is a member of the North American Spine Society, the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, the Spine Arthroplasty Society, and the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. -
Fernando Alarid-Escudero
Assistant Professor of Health Policy
BioFernando Alarid-Escudero, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Health Policy at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a decision scientist specializing in disease simulation, decision-analytic modeling, and cost-effectiveness analysis to inform health policy questions that cannot be readily answered through clinical studies alone. He has also developed novel methods to quantify the value of future research and calibrate simulation models using emulator-based Bayesian methods. Dr. Alarid-Escudero is a member of three cancers (colorectal [CRC], bladder, and gastric) of the Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network (CISNET) consortium, a group of investigators sponsored by the National Cancer Institute in the U.S. that uses simulation modeling to evaluate the impact of cancer control interventions (e.g., prevention, screening, and treatment) on population trends in incidence and mortality. Dr. Alarid-Escudero co-founded the Decision Analysis in R for Technologies in Health (DARTH) workgroup (http://darthworkgroup.com) and the Collaborative Network on Value of Information (ConVOI; https://www.convoi-group.org), international and multi-institutional collaborative efforts that develop transparent and open-source solutions to implement decision analysis and quantify the value of potential future investigation for health policy analysis.

Alexandriah Nicole Alas, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Obstetrics & Gynecology
BioDr. Alas is a board-certified, fellowship-trained urogynecologist with Stanford Health Care Obstetrics & Gynecology. She is also a pelvic surgeon and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She specializes in minimally invasive urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery, including vaginal, laparoscopic, robotic and VNOTES approaches.
Dr. Alas has expertise in treating pelvic organ prolapse, urinary and fecal incontinence, bladder pain, vaginal fistulas, mesh and non-mesh procedures as well as treating complications. In addition, she offers uterine preservation surgeries as well as non-surgical options. She is trained in a variety of in-office procedures, including urodynamics, office cystoscopy, bladder Botox injections, urethral injections, PTNS, and sacral neuromodulation tests.
Dr. Alas is nationally recognized for her expertise and serves as a national oral board examiner for the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is passionate about teaching and has served as the associate fellowship director in Urogynecology in the past and currently supervises, teaches, and mentors medical students, residents, and fellows in urogynecology.
Dr. Alas is actively involved in research and serves on the Society of Gynecological Surgeons Systematic Review Group. She has published her work in many peer-reviewed journals, including International Urogynecology Journal, Journal of Urology, and Obstetrics & Gynecology. She also serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals and has presented her research nationally and internationally. -

Our primary interest is the use of advanced imaging techniques to expand the treatment window for ischemic stroke. William Alegria

Dr. Lydia Aletraris

BioDr. Lydia Aletraris brings both a national and global perspective to her research, specializing in substance use and human trafficking. With extensive experience managing projects funded by agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the U.S. Department of State, she has served as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on national research examining the implementation of evidence-based practices in substance use treatment and the effects of U.S. cannabis policy, as well as on international research focused on human trafficking.
Dr. Aletraris previously coordinated the Prevalence Reduction Innovation Forum (PRIF), a global initiative that developed key trafficking indicators and brought together scholars from around the world to test methodologies for measuring human trafficking prevalence, with studies conducted in Brazil, Costa Rica, Morocco, Pakistan, Tanzania, and Tunisia.
With a commitment to health and human rights, her research addresses urgent public health challenges through ethical, evidence-based practices and policies that support resilience and recovery across diverse, at-risk populations. Dr. Aletraris holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Georgia. -

BioDr. Alexander is an advanced heart failure-trained cardiologist. He is also an Assistant Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Alexander specializes in the management of advanced heart failure and transplant cases, seeing a wide range of patients. He also has an active research laboratory, studying various forms of heart failure.
Dr. Alexander has expertise in diagnosing and treating transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis, a critical yet underdiagnosed cause of heart failure among African Americans and the elderly. He is conducting extensive research to enhance our understanding of this condition, with grant support from the National Institutes of Health and American Heart Association, among other sources. -

Prior to completing two fellowships in cornea, external disease, refractive surgery and uveitis at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, ranked #1 eye hospital in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, Dr. Ali finished her ophthalmology residency at the Jones Eye Institute / UAMS. She earned her medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine and completed her undergraduate training in English literature and creative writing from Agnes Scott College.
Dr. Ali has received many academic and teaching awards including the Bascom Palmer Fellow of the Year Award and the Jone’s Eye Dean’s Faculty Award. As a second generation American, Tayyeba finds herself dwelling on migrant and refugee stories, their need for ethnic and religious identity, and the repercussions of these journeys. She is keenly interested in international medicine, resident education, health technology and taking a closer look at the moral crossroads we face in healthcare. She is the Associated Director for Pegasus Physician Writers at Stanford as well as the Senior Fiction Editor for the medical literary magazine, The Pegasus Review; she has a particular affinity for colons (grammatically, not anatomically, speaking) and semicolons. -

His research focuses on the intersection of AI, education, and human-centered technology, particularly emphasizing how AI can enhance social-emotional learning, foster inclusivity in education, and support global digital equity.
Dr. Aliabadi earned a Ph.D. from Robert Morris University, focusing on AI interventions in education, a Master’s degree in International Political Economy, and a Bachelor’s in Finance and Economics from the University of Pittsburgh. With eight years of service in the U.S. Army Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), he brings a global perspective to the ethical considerations of AI. His expertise in human psychology, education, and geopolitics makes him a leading advocate for AI that empowers and uplifts humanity. -
Leonardo Aliaga
Clinical Assistant Professor, Emergency Medicine
BioDr. Leonardo Aliaga is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University and a medical education researcher. His scholarly focus lies in error-based learning strategies, adaptive expertise, and clinical reasoning. He is co-Principal Investigator of an AI-powered virtual patient simulator designed to accelerate diagnostic skill development through purposeful exposure to cognitive struggle and contrasting cases that sharpen pattern recognition. He has been invited to give international presentations and to lead an international symposium on error-based learning strategies. His research has been published in JAMA Network Open and focuses on designing instructional methods that harness errors as cognitive catalysts to deepen learning and develop adaptive expertise.
Dr. Aliaga is currently pursuing a Master of Health Professions Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where his thesis aims to establish a framework to help educators implement error-based learning strategies across diverse medical education settings. He collaborates with colleagues at UC Davis, Wake Forest University, the University of Toronto, the University of Washington, and University Hospital Basel, and is building the FERN: the Failure in Education Research Network.
Dr. Aliaga brings a unique background to his work, having trained in neurosurgery before transitioning to emergency medicine. That experience shaped how he thinks about expertise and the role of struggle in becoming a truly excellent physician. He also draws from his earlier career in fine arts and photography to shape his approach to teaching—grounded in visual clarity, storytelling, and helping learners “see” through the layers of clinical complexity. He’s known for delivering gritty, high-yield, and visually rich learning experiences that don’t steal the struggle but instead help residents turn missteps into mastery. -
Daniel Aliseda Jover

BioDr. Daniel Aliseda graduated in Medicine from the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, and completed his residency in General Surgery at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra. During this time, he developed a strong interest in Hepatobiliopancreatic diseases and Liver Transplantation, which led him to pursue a PhD with international distinction. His research focused on developing models and strategies to improve survival in patients with liver and pancreatic neoplasm—one of which was nationally recognized as the best research project conducted by a surgical resident in Spain. As part of his academic training, he also completed a clinical and research stay at the Centre Hépato-Biliaire Paul Brousse in Paris. After finishing his residency, he joined the HPB and Liver Transplant Unit at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra as a Junior Attending Surgeon.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research is focused on attaining a better understanding of the initiation, maintenance, and progression of tumors, and their response to current therapies toward improving future treatment strategies. In this effort, I employ tools from functional genomics, computational biology, molecular genetics, and mouse models.
Clinically, I specialize in the care of patients with lymphomas, working on translating our findings in prospective cancer clinical trials. -
Matthew S Alkaitis, MD PhD

BioMatthew S Alkaitis MD, PhD is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital medicine and Stanford School of Medicine. He received his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Oxford, in collaboration the National Institutes of Health as part of the NIH’s graduate partnership program. He received his MD from Harvard Medical school and completed his residency in internal medicine at Stanford. Dr. Alkaitis’ research interests span basic biochemistry, clinical informatics, natural language processing, genetics of hematologic malignancies and methods of cell-free DNA detection. His clinical and research interests are focused on pediatric heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, heart transplantation, and anticoagulation. He completed his training in pediatrics, cardiology, and a senior fellowship in heart failure/transplant at Boston Children's Hospital before before appointment as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School/Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Almond completed his MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health with a focus on statistics and epidemiology (study design for rare diseases) followed by a Medical Device Fellowship at the FDA in the Division of Cardiovascular Devices at CDRH. Dr. Almond moved to Stanford in 2014 where he currently serves as professor of pediatrics and directs the clinical research program within Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Therapies (PACT) Program. He also serves as Medical Director of the Children’s Heart Center Anticoagulation Management Program at Stanford (CHAMPS). Dr. Almond has a passion for collaborative research serving as PI for federally-funded multi-center clinical trials including the Berlin Heart ventricular assist device (VAD) FDA Trial that led to its FDA approval in 2011, the TEAMMATE (everolimus for heart transplant) Trial, the TROLLEY (Cardiohelp ECMO/anticoagulation RCT in heart failure) Trial, the NHLBI PumpKIN (Jarvik 2015 LVAD) Trial, and the SPOT BIAS Trial, an FDA-funded trial to understand racial/pigment bias in commercial pulse oximeters.

Emily Alsentzer

BioDr. Emily Alsentzer is an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Data Science and, by courtesy, Computer Science at Stanford University. Her research leverages machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) to augment clinical decision-making and broaden access to high quality healthcare. She focuses on integrating medical expertise into ML models to ensure responsible deployment in clinical workflows. Dr. Alsentzer completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where she worked to deploy ML models within the Mass General Brigham healthcare system. She received her PhD from the Health Sciences and Technology program at MIT and Harvard Medical School and holds degrees in computer science (BS) and biomedical informatics (MS) from Stanford University. She has served as General Chair for the Machine Learning for Health Symposium and founding organizer for SAIL and the Conference on Health, Inference, and Learning (CHIL).

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsCulturally Sensitive Therapy is a group psychotherapy for people with early psychosis and their families. Study aims are to understand if this treatment is compatible with this population, to assess improvements in family functioning and mental health symptoms, to assess mediating factors (e.g., increased usage of adaptive religious and other cultural beliefs/values), and to assess longevity of improvements. Last, we aim to qualitatively understand participants’ experiences with this treatment.
