Michael F. Clarke, M.D.
Karel H. and Avice N. Beekhuis Professor of Cancer Biology
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Clarke maintains a laboratory focused on two areas of research: i) the control of self-renewal of normal stem cells and diseases such as cancer and hereditary diseases; and ii) the identification and characterization of cancer stem cells. His laboratory is investigating how perturbations of stem cell regulatory machinery contributes to human disease. In particular, the laboratory is investigating epigenetic regulators of self renewal, the process by which stem cells regenerate themselves.

Shoa L. Clarke, MD, PhD
Assistant Professor of Medicine (Stanford Prevention Research Center) and of Pediatrics (Cardiology)
BioDr. Clarke is a preventive cardiologist and a physician-scientist focused on disease prevention. He earned his undergraduate degree in human biology from the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University before obtaining his MD and PhD (genetics) from Stanford University School of Medicine. He has completed clinical training in internal medicine (Brigham & Women’s Hospital), pediatrics (Boston Children’s Hospital), and cardiovascular medicine (Stanford Hospital), and he is board certified in all three specialties. His research is focused on 1) understanding complex disease genetics in diverse populations, 2) integrating monogenic and polygenic risk with clinical risk, 3) large-scale phenotyping using the electronic health record and medical images. His clinical practice focuses on identifying risk factors for cardiovascular disease with the goal of promoting health and longevity through evidence-based personalized treatment. He is interested in developing family-centric approaches for the treatment of adults and children carrying genetic risk for disease.

Stephanie Clarke
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Child Development
BioDr. Stephanie Clarke is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Clarke is an expert in the treatment of suicidal and self-harming behavior in adolescents, with additional expertise in evidence-based treatment of trauma and restrictive eating disorders in adolescents. She is intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), currently the only well-established treatment for self-harming adolescents at high risk for suicide. Dr. Clarke is an Attending Psychologist and supervisor in Stanford’s Adolescent DBT Program, Eating Disorders Clinic, and Comprehensive Care Program (CCP, inpatient unit for medical issues related to disordered eating), where she specialized in seeing complex cases with multiple diagnoses (e.g., comorbid Anorexia Nervosa and suicidality/self-harm). She was the Stanford Psychologist in the DBT Intensive Outpatient Program, RISE, a collaboration between Stanford and Children’s Health Council, where she was in charge of training and supervision of psychology trainees. Dr. Clarke also provides education and training to psychology and psychiatry trainees in DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), suicidality, self-harm, mood disorders, eating disorders, and trauma. Dr. Clarke has given numerous talks, trainings, and lectures and has co-authored several publications on the topics of adolescent suicide, self-harming behavior, and DBT.
In 2020, Dr. Clarke was the recipient of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science's Clinical Innovation and Service Award. Dr. Clarke was also awarded funding from the Professional Leadership Development Awards Program for the 20-21 academic year, which supports the career development of department faculty who exhibit particular promise in advancing into leadership roles in academic medicine. Dr. Clarke has been funded by a grant from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Maternal and Child Health Research Institute to study the safety and feasibility of providing exposure-based trauma treatment to suicidal teens in stage I DBT.
Dr. Clarke also maintains a small private practice, where she provides consultation, parent coaching, and individual therapy for adolescents and adults using DBT, FBT, exposure and response prevention, ACT, compassion-focused, and other CBT and evidence-based approaches. -

Max earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Lewis & Clark College as a Pamplin Honor Society Fellow and his MPH in Global Health at George Washington University's Milken Institute School of Public Health as a Delta Omega Honor Society Fellow. He has worked on several global health projects in India, Pakistan and East Africa. He is the founder of several impact-centered organizations such as Organic Route, a company focused on improving agricultural supply chains and the distribution of healthy foods in rural areas of East Africa.
Max dreams of utilizing his background in business, public health and medicine to create innovative healthcare solutions that are equitable, prevention-focused and individually-tailored. -
Carol Clayberger

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur group uses molecular biology, biochemistry, and cellular immunology to investigate the activation and effector function of T lymphocytes. Research in the laboratory is currently focused on three areas: granulysin, a lytic molecule expressed late (7-12 days) after T cell activation; identification of correlates of immunity in diseases such as tuberculosis; and tolerance. The long term goal of this work is to develop new ways to treat human disease.

Sara Clemente

BioBorn in Connecticut but raised in Ecuador, Sara Clemente spent the majority of her early childhood admiring the rich Andean Indigenous cultures that made her native city of Cuenca so unique. Her experiences taught her to value the indigenous groups present in contemporary societies and the roles that they have in enabling diversity and interconnectivity to flourish in South American nations. She attended New York City’s Macaulay Honors College and chose to pursue her interests in indigenous peoples’ language and land rights by majoring in Linguistics, Translation, and Human Rights. She has also interned at VIVAT International as both a translator and researcher in a variety of land grabbing projects. Her interests in language, Human Rights, and indigenous peoples led her to pursue a master’s in Latin American Studies and Human Rights in Latin American Studies at CLAS. Currently, she manages, plans, and develops budgets for events and communications at CLAS. In order to find balance in her life, Sara loves to backpack and practice Vinyasa and Aerial Yoga and has her 200-hr Yoga Teacher Training Certificate.

BioKarly Cody completed her PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Wisconsin in the lab of Dr. Sterling Johnson. Her doctoral research focused on characterizing the preclinical disease stage of Alzheimer's disease using health, biomarker, and cognitive profiles obtained in late-midlife. At Stanford, Karly's research combines neuroimaging and fluid biomarkers to study trajectories of aging, including healthy brain aging as well as Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

BioMitchell B. Cohen, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine. He serves as the Chief Medical Officer for Stanford Medicine Children’s Health and the Senior Associate Dean in the School of Medicine for Maternal and Child Health. From 2014-2024, he was the Katharine Reynolds Ireland Chair of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Physician-in-Chief of Children’s of Alabama. Prior to that, he served as the Director of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and Vice Chair of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Dr. Cohen was the founding Director of the P30 Cincinnati Digestive Health Center: Bench to Bedside Research in Pediatric Digestive Diseases His research focused on the mechanism of action of E. coli heat stable enterotoxin, a worldwide cause of infant diarrhea. His laboratory identified that increased guanylyl cyclase (GC-C) receptors for this toxin contributed to the increased susceptibility and severity of diarrhea seen in infants. Identification of the endogenous ligands for GC-C, guanylin and uroguanylin, led to development of knockout mice and an evolving understanding of intestinal secretion and pharmacologic treatment through this ligand-receptor family. Dr. Cohen had a long-standing NIH-supported program of vaccine trials for enteric infection, including a validated human cholera challenge model which resulted in licensure of a cholera vaccine.
Dr. Cohen has held leadership positions in several professional capacities. He served as the only pediatrician on the NIH Commission on Digestive Diseases; he was chair of the Section on Growth, Development and Nutrition of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the Section on Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (SOGHN) of the American Academy of Pediatrics; he was President of NASPGHAN, the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Dr. Cohen was elected to membership in the Association of American Physicians and has received several lifetime achievement awards, including the Shwachman Award from NASPGHAN, the Saul Horowitz Jr. Award from Mt. Sinai, and the UAB Department of Pediatrics Lifetime Achievement Award. -

BioDr. Sara Marie Cohen-Fournier received her undergraduate degree in Science from McGill University, her masters of arts in Oral History from Columbia University, and her medical degree from Université de Montréal. She did her residency in Psychiatry at McGill University and her fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Stanford University. She is currently an adjunct clinical instructor of Addiction Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine. She practices in rural Northern Quebec, where she works in part at the community center, the Native Friendship Center and at the OUD local clinic. She is interested in under-standing the essence of spirituality, culture, biology, psychology,and society in mental health.

BioDr. Elana Cohn (She/Her) is a board-certified Family Physician, with a love for caring for the whole person and the entire family.
She completed her bachelor's degree in Neuroscience and Behavior at Barnard College, after which she worked as a Health Outreach coordinator on a mobile medical van providing care to the homeless population in NY, which sparked her love for primary care. She received her medical degree at Tel aviv University, and completed her residency at Mount Sinai and the Institute for Family Health.
Her practice spans care for all ages, with an emphasis on care for marginalized populations, reproductive health, office based-procedures, and teaching. She is passionate about integrating mental health care and reproductive justice into general practice, and making care for her patients as comprehensive as possible.
Outside of the office, she loves to travel and explore new places, dance her heart out, and spend time with her family. -
Pasqualina Colella
Senior Research Scientist, Pediatrics - Genetics
BioDr. Pasqualina Colella is a distinguished scientist with expertise in gene and cell therapy for inherited diseases. She is currently a Senior Research Scientist at Stanford University, where she pioneers innovative cell therapy approaches for neuropathic lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs). Her research investigates hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and genome editing to target untreatable diseases caused by progranulin deficiency.
Dr. Colella earned her PhD at TIGEM (Italy), where she developed therapeutic strategies for inherited blindness due to retinal photoreceptor degeneration. Her work included pioneering dual AAV-mediated large gene delivery to the retina for Usher syndrome type 1B (USH1B) and Stargardt disease (STGD).
During her postdoctoral studies at Genethon (France), Dr. Colella focused on gene therapy for Pompe disease, an LSD with neuromuscular manifestations. She addressed immune responses and efficacy limitations of preclinical in vivo AAV gene therapy through transgene engineering, including the development of highly secretable GAA and tandem promoters.
Dr. Colella’s research has been foundational for ongoing clinical trials for USH1B and Pompe disease.
With 30 published manuscripts—16 as the first author and 7 as a co-corresponding author—and 6 patents, Dr. Colella has a robust track record in the field. She is dedicated to driving innovations in gene and cell therapy for untreatable diseases and mentoring the next generation of scientists.
Dr. Colella has been awarded the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship and was selected as a finalist for the ERC Starting Grant 2019. -
Todd Coleman

BioTodd P. Coleman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, and by courtesy, Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He received B.S. degrees in electrical engineering (summa cum laude), as well as computer engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Michigan (Go Blue). He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from MIT in electrical engineering and computer science. He did postdoctoral studies at MIT and Mass General Hospital in quantitative neuroscience. He previously was a faculty member in the Departments of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and the University of California, San Diego, respectively. Dr. Coleman’s research is very multi-disciplinary, using tools from applied probability, physiology, and bioelectronics. Examples include, for instance, optimal transport methods in high-dimensional uncertainty quantification and developing technologies and algorithms to monitor and modulate physiology of the nervous systems in the brain and visceral organs. He has served as a Principal Investigator on grants from the NSF, NIH, Department of Defense, and multiple private foundations. Dr. Coleman is an inventor on 10 granted US patents. He has been selected as a Gilbreth Lecturer for the National Academy of Engineering, a TEDMED speaker, and a Fellow of IEEE as well as the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He recently served as Chair of the National Academies Standing Committee on Biotechnology Capabilities and National Security Needs.

Ruben J Colman, MD, PhD
Instructor, Pediatrics - Gastroenterology
BioDr. Colman is a pediatric gastroenterologist and physician-scientist with an overarching goal to improve and optimize the quality of care and outcomes for children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) through precision medicine approaches. His interdisciplinary team science research program focuses on making precision medicine clinically actionable through innovative solutions merging clinical pharmacology knowledge with ‘-omics’ discoveries using microbiome and metabolomics signatures. Part of this work includes translating these findings into improved clinical treat-to-target endpoints with immediate noninvasive point-of-care measures such as intestinal ultrasound.
The foundation of his current work originates from his PhD titled ‘Precision Dosing and Personalized Medicine in pediatric IBD’. During his training, Dr. Colman was also an American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) editorial fellow for Gastroenterology and he is actively involved in the committees of several professional societies including the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN), the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and the International Bowel UltraSound (IBUS) Group. Dr. Colman is currently supported by Early Career Awards of the Thrasher Research Fund, the NASPGHAN Foundation and the Stanford Pediatrics Physician-Scientist Bridge to K Program. -

On Leave from 09/03/2024 To 03/02/2025Current Research and Scholarly InterestsUsing various animal models of bladder outlet obstruction as a representation of human prostatic disease, I am investigating how intervening with pharmacotherapy, neuromodulation, and other novel therapies may help to reverse the adverse changes in the bladder due to the obstruction.
I also am investigating new, minimally invasive treatments for post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence.
I am also investigating the role of neruomodulation in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain and IC. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab develops gene-editing technologies like novel CRISPR systems and large gene insertion techniques for gene&cell therapy. We also leverages these gene-editing tools for single-cell functional screening, to probe molecular mechanisms of cancer and immunological diseases. To accelerate our work, we integrate AI and machine learning to design and evolve gene-editing proteins/RNAs in silico, pushing the frontier that bridges computational and experimental biology.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy main recent interest is the application of Biomedical Engineering approaches for the clinical visualization and characterization of the static and dynamic properties of pelvic floor function. This extends to ultrasound Imaging and image processing, construction of computer models and biomechanics analysis of pelvic floor function. It is envisioned that these considerations are important constituents of the clinical evaluation of patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction and urodynamics.

Biology doesn't occur in "a vacuum" or on coated plates--it occurs in the living body and that's were we look for biological patterns and responses to insult.

Our current focus includes socioeconomic and ethnic disparities in kidney stone disease, water quality and stone disease, pregnancy in kidney stone disease and geographical variations in kidney stones incidence and metabolic kidney stone work up.

John P. Cooke, MD, PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur translational research program in vascular regeneration is focused on generating and characterizing vascular cells from human induced pluripotential stem cells. We are also studying the therapeutic application of these cells in murine models of peripheral arterial disease. In these studies we leverage our longstanding interest in endothelial signaling, eg by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) as well as by nicotinic cholinergic receptors (nAChR).

Margaret Cooke, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Cooke is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. She has a strong clinical interest in hand, wrist, and elbow surgery for adult and pediatric patients. She is dual fellowship trained in Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery and Pediatric & Congenital Hand Surgery.
As an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Cooke’s goal is to alleviate pain and improve hand, wrist, and elbow function so that her patients can return to the activities they enjoy. Her primary clinical interests are nerve compression (carpal tunnel), nerve injuries (traumatic/lacerations), joint instability/arthritis (degenerative conditions of the hand wrist and elbow), sports/athletic injuries, fracture care, and pediatric & congenital conditions of the hand and upper extremity.
Dr. Cooke utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach in order to provide comprehensive care for each patient. She works closely with colleagues from oncology, radiology, physical therapy, and other specialties. Her team includes certified hand therapists, cast technicians, medical assistants, and patient care coordinators. Together, Dr. Cooke and her team are committed to providing the best possible care for patients.
She invites patient referrals as early as possible when an upper extremity problem is suspected. She ensures a trusting relationship with referring physicians (whether primary care providers or specialists) by staying in communication so they understand and are comfortable with her recommendations.
In addition to patient care, Dr. Cooke has enjoyed contributing to her field through research. Among Dr. Cooke’s clinical research interests is fracture healing, including gene expression following administration of medication to stimulate bone repair. She has authored articles on topics like infection prediction and pain management after surgical repair of fractures. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Osteoarthritis & Cartilage, Spine, and Transplantation. She also co-wrote the chapter “The History of Carpal Tunnel” for the textbook Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Related Median Neuropathies.
Dr. Cooke’s honors include a Howard Hughes Research Fellowship, an Outstanding Chief Resident Research Award, and recognition for authoring one of the top ten Foot & Ankle research papers at the 2016 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons conference.
In addition to her practice in the U.S., Dr. Cooke has traveled abroad as a physician volunteer to provide surgical services in underserved areas where there is no access to hand surgery specialists. In partnership with the surgeon-founded nonprofit organization Touching Hands, she has performed hand surgeries on adult and pediatric patients in Honduras. Dr. Cooke also has traveled with Shriners Hospital to treat children in Davao, Philippines. -
