Derick Okwan
Assistant Professor of Pathology
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsBroadly, the Okwan lab’s primary interest is to understand how and why the immune system contributes to nearly all chronic diseases. The immune system of the modern human has evolved from a history of stress to the species: famines, continual bouts of lethal pandemics, as well as major climate/environmental and migratory changes that exposed the immune system to novel threats. At the forefront of these challenges are innate immune cells, particularly neutrophils, the most abundant leukocytes. For the first time in human history – at least in the western world- we live in an era of abundance. The Okwan lab is interested in understanding how this traumatic history creates a functional mismatch for the neutrophil, which we believe underpins their roles in chronic diseases of the modern era: cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and autoimmune disorders. Rather than wholesale depletion of neutrophils and innate immune cells, we seek to identify novel approaches to leverage these cells to combat various diseases.

Michael G. Ozawa

BioDr. Ozawa is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology with subspecialty focus in Cytopathology, Head and Neck pathology, and Thoracic pathology. He completed his M.D., Ph.D. training at the McGovern Medical School and the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. He then completed residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology followed by fellowship training in Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology at Stanford University. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology as well as Cytopathology. His interests include pulmonary neoplasms as well as neoplasms of the Head and Neck. He also has developed collaborative research interests in utilizing fine needle aspiration (FNA) techniques in the growing clinical application of Chimeric Antigen T Cell (CAR-T) therapy.

Clinical Associate Professor (By courtesy), PathologyBioDr. Anil Panigrahi is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and, by courtesy, Pathology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dual board-certified in Anesthesiology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, he maintains active clinical practice in both fields. He serves as Director of Patient Blood Management at Stanford Health Care, Chair of the Stanford Health Care Transfusion Committee, Medical Director of the Anesthesiology Perioperative Anemia Management Clinic, and Assistant Medical Director of the Stanford Health Care Transfusion Service. His academic and clinical leadership focuses on advancing perioperative blood management strategies to optimize outcomes in complex surgical patients.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University, Dr. Panigrahi received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he was awarded the John G. Clark Prize for meritorious research. He completed residency training in Anesthesiology and fellowship in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine at Stanford University.
Dr. Panigrahi’s scholarly work spans immunology, transfusion safety, and patient blood management. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, textbook chapters, including for Miller’s Anesthesia and the AABB Technical Manual, and national guidelines. He contributes nationally through service on multiple committees for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB), and he is a frequent invited speaker at national and international meetings, including those of the ASA, AABB, and Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management (SABM). -

Deanna Pepin

BioHey there! I was born in the small town of Selkirk, Manitoba, but lived most of my life in Edmonton, Alberta. I completed my Bachelor of Science at Kings University, focusing on biology and did undergrad research on Pink Pigmented Facultative Methylotrophs - bacteria that degrade petrochemicals. Following graduation, I became a Research Technician with Exciton Technologies Inc., a research and development company producing silver-based wound care products for treating infections. In 2016, I joined Dr. Benjamin Willing’s lab in Agriculture, Food, and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Alberta and completed a Master of Science focusing on how certain husbandry changes impact the development of the gastrointestinal microbiota, Salmonella infection resistance, and immune response in broiler production. In 2024, I completed my PhD in the department of Microbiology & Immunology at UBC, working with Dr. Carolina Tropini to understand the impact of osmotic stress on the gut microbiome.

Amalia Perna
Postdoctoral Scholar, Pathology
BioDr. Perna received her education at the University of Urbino (BSc in Biological Science) and at the University of Trieste (MSc in Functional Genomics).
She obtained her Ph.D. in Neuroscience/Medical Sciences in 2021, from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) in collaboration with the Swiss Integrative Center for Human Health (SICHH). During her doctoral studies, she investigated the molecular players involved in the neurodegenerative process, with special attention to Notch signaling modulation in the neuronal demise after kainic acid (KA)-induced excitotoxicity
With funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), Dr. Perna joined Prof. Thomas Montine's lab at Stanford University and extended her doctoral research work to single-cell technologies such as single-nucleus RNA-seq. In February 2022 she was appointed as a postdoctoral fellow in Montine Lab.
Dr. Perna’s research aims to elucidate the modulation of signaling pathways in the different cell types of the brain after the perturbation of its homeostasis. She is also interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal regeneration/recovery after damage and in neurodegenerative diseases. -
Tho Duc Pham

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy areas of interest involve exploring antibody function as it relates to transfusion medicine, blood safety, and emerging infectious diseases. This ranges from natural immune responses to the ABO blood group, antibody profiling anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, and studying HEV seroprevalence in the local community. I am also interested in exploring statistical approaches to improve blood product availability and overall health care efficiency in a tertiary care system.

Jonathan Pollack

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsResearch in the Pollack lab centers on translational genomics, with a focus on prostate diseases. The lab employs next-generation sequencing, single-cell and spatial genomics, gene editing, and human cell/tissue-based modeling to uncover disease mechanisms, biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Current areas of emphasis include benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer, and rare/neglected cancer types (ameloblastoma, liposarcoma).

Mobeen Rahman

Prior to joining faculty as an assistant professor at Stanford University, I completed a head and neck surgical pathology fellowship at the MD Anderson Cancer Center (2019). Following this subspecialty fellowship, I was faculty as a head and neck only pathologist at Cleveland Clinic for three years. -

Mara Rendi, MD, PhD

BioDr. Rendi is a breast and gynecologic pathologist with a focus on the education of medical students, residents, and practicing pathologists. Her areas of interest include the utilization of molecular testing in breast cancer, management of high-risk lesions, ancillary testing to aid in the use of novel therapeutics, and development and delivery of effective pathology education to medical students. She is a nationally and internationally known medical educator having won multiple teaching awards for her innovative strategies in pathology education. She is actively involved in undergraduate medical education, resident education, and continuing medical education for practicing pathologists as well as a practicing breast and gynecologic pathologist.

Kerri E. Rieger, MD, PhD

Clinical Professor, DermatologyBioDr. Rieger is a Clinical Professor of Pathology and Dermatology at Stanford University. She received her M.D., Ph.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed her Dermatology Residency and Dermatopathology Fellowship at Stanford University. She is board certified in Dermatology and Dermatopathology. She evaluates skin specimens in the Pathology department, where her interests include histopathologic findings in cutaneous lymphoma, hospitalized patients, and patients with autoimmune disease. She also sees patients in the Stanford dermatology clinic in Portola Valley, where her clinical interest is adult general dermatology.

Theodore Roth

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Roth Lab develops, applies, and translates scalable genetic manipulation technologies in primary human cells and complex in vivo tissue environments. Working with students, trainees, and staff with backgrounds across bioengineering, genetics, immunology, oncology, and pathology, the lab has developed CRISPR-All, a unified genetic perturbation language able to arbitrarily and combinatorially examine genetic perturbations across perturbation type and scale in primary human cells. Ongoing applications of CRISPR-All in the lab have revealed surprising capacities to synthetically engineer human cells beyond evolved cellular states. These new capacities to perturb human cell’s genetics beyond their evolved functionality drives ongoing work to understand the biology and therapeutic potential of synthetic cell state engineering - in essence learning how to build new human genes tailor made for a specific cell and specific environment to drive previously inaccessible therapeutic cellular functions.

Matteo Santoro Pharm.D., Ph.D.
Postdoctoral Scholar, Pathology
BioDr. Santoro joined Stanford University in March 2021, focusing his research on Parkinson’s disease, neuronal vulnerability, and identification of therapeutic markers in relation to α-synucleinopathies. Currently under the Supervision of Prof. Thomas Montine, he is working on the development of LRRK2 selective inhibitors. Prior to his arrival at Stanford, he held a position as a clinical monitor at Syneos Health, where he gained key knowledge needed to translate lab-based findings into clinical and commercial applications. Previously, Dr. Santoro held a postdoctoral position at the University of Aberdeen (Scotland, UK), working on amyloid-beta extracts from Alzheimer’s disease patients. During his postdoctoral research, Dr. Santoro designed and optimized a cost-effective and rapid assay for the measurement of toxic amyloid-beta species in human biofluids. In 2017, he obtained his Ph.D. (4-year program) at the University of Aberdeen on Parkinson’s disease (PD), immunology, and behavior. The major findings Ph.D. findings were the following: 1) the characterization of a small protein called HMGB1 as an inflammatory mediator in PD; 2) the motor and non-motor behavioral characterization of three neurotoxin based mouse models of PD, 3) the characterization of the innate immune response in PD through the toll-like receptor signaling pathways 4) evaluation of the effects of chronic systemic inflammation on both resident and infiltrating immune cells in the CNS. In 2012, Dr. Santoro attained his Pharm.D. in chemistry and pharmaceutical technology (5-year program) at the University of Calabria (Italy), during which he undertook an internship at King’s College London (SGDP Centre) and worked for over a year on a rat model of stroke.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab works at the interface of immunology, cancer biology, and genomics to study cellular and molecular mechanisms of the immune response to cancer. In particular, we are leveraging high-throughput genomic technologies to understand the dynamics of the tumor-specific T cell response to cancer antigens and immunotherapies (checkpoint blockade, CAR-T cells, and others). We are also interested in understanding the impact of immuno-editing on the heterogeneity and clonal evolution of cancer.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy group’s research is on the mechanisms and consequences of virus evolution with a focus on HIV therapy and drug resistance. We maintain a public HIV drug resistance database (http://hivdb.stanford.edu) as a resource for HIV drug resistance surveillance, interpreting HIV drug resistance tests, and HIV drug development. Our paramount goal is to inform HIV treatment and prevention policies by identifying the main factors responsible for the emergence and spread of drug resistance.

Hua Shan

BioDr. Shan specializes in providing blood transfusion and apheresis treatment to patients with diverse medical problems. She has been practicing transfusion medicine for over twenty five years. Dr. Shan currently serves as the Medical Director of Transfusion Service at Stanford Medical Center. Dr. Shan has also been leading research and education programs in the fields of transfusion safety, optimizing clinical blood transfusion practice and blood availability.

Tanya Sharma

BioTanya's interests span across studying G-Protein Coupled Receptors and the biochemistry of membrane proteins. During her doctoral studies, she worked as a visiting researcher at the National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa (Sussex laboratories) from 2019-2023 uncovering the role of an ancient mating receptor Ste3 in microbial pathogenesis and chemotropism. During her current position at Butcher lab, she is using High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms to guide her search for interesting ligand-receptor interactions. This involves using a combination of computation tools, cell based and analytical chemistry techniques for discovery and validation phase respectively.
Outside of science, she is an avid musician and a singer. -

Hiroyuki Shimada

BioHiroyuki Shimada, MD, PhD, FRCPA (Hon), is Professor of Pathology and of Pediatrics at the Stanford University Medical Center. He was born in Tokyo, Japan, and completed MD (1973) and PhD (1982) at the Yokohama City University School of Medicine, Yokohama, Japan, and also completed his pathology training at the Children's Hospital (now the Nationwide Children’s Hospital) and the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA (1988). Before moving to the Stanford University in 2019, he was Professor of Pathology (Clinical Scholar) at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine and working at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Dr. Shimada was Chair of the International Neuroblastoma Pathology Committee (1999-2017) and the founder of the International Neuroblastoma Pathology Classification (INPC). As Director of the COG (Children’s Oncology Group) Neuroblastoma Pathology Reference Laboratory (since 2001), he has been actively reviewing pathology samples of ~700 neuroblastoma cases per year from United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Pathology review results according to the INPC have been providing critical information for patient stratification and protocol assignment in the COG international neuroblastoma clinical trials. -

Arend Sidow

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe have a highly collaborative research program in the evolutionary genomics of cancer. We apply well-established principles of phylogenetics to cancer evolution on the basis of whole genome sequencing and functional genomics data of multiple tumor samples from the same patient. Introductions to our work and the concepts we apply are best found in the Newburger et al paper in Genome Research and the Sidow and Spies review in TIGS.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study cellular and molecular mechanisms of immune-mediated injury in CNS tissues that are affected in multiple sclerosis (MS). We study: 1) tissues of mice with EAE using histology and immunohistochemistry, 2) cross-recognition of neurons by antibodies against myelin proteolipid protein epitopes, and a distinct oligodendrogliopathy induced in mice by the non-protein amino acid azetidine (Aze), (which is found in the human diet); Aze-induced abnormalities mimic those in MS patient CNS tissues
