Sebastian Duno-Miranda
Postdoctoral Scholar, Biochemistry
BioI started my training as a biologist at the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) and the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas (IVIC). My Licentiate thesis degree advisor was Dr. Raúl Padrón, whom with I studied the structure and function of tarantula muscle, a key non-conventional animal model to understand muscle function in humans. Next, I would move to pursue doctoral studies at the University of Vermont, under Dr. David M. Warshaw supervision, studying the molecular mechanics of human cardiac myosin, the motor responsible for powering up the contractions of the human heart, the effect of multiple cardiomyopathy mutations, and the application of machine learning to enhance myosin single-molecule data analysis. Now, I've joined the lab of Dr. James Spudich at Stanford University, to continue pushing the frontiers of knowledge regarding the molecular physiology of human myosins in the context of heart disease. Tina Duong MPT, PhD
Sr Res Scientist-Basic Life, Adult Neurology
BioAs the Director of Clinical Outcomes and Research Development, and the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Neuro-IGNITE Center at the Stanford University School of Medicine, I focus on translational rehabilitation science, psychometric measurement theory, clinical outcomes development, trial design, and digital health technology for individuals with neuromuscular disorders.
My research is guided by a simple premise: measurement determines access. Individuals who are harder to measure, and constructs that are meaningful to patients but difficult to quantify, are frequently overlooked in clinical trials, limiting both trial participation and treatment access. Complementing established functional scales, our team works to bridge this gap by defining the concept of interest and context of use with patients, clinicians, and regulators, then developing and validating fit-for-purpose clinical outcome assessments and digital endpoints across neuromuscular disorders, including spinal muscular atrophy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, myotonic dystrophy, and facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. This alignment supports a clearer regulatory path so that patients who have been difficult to measure can qualify for trials, demonstrate meaningful benefit, and gain access to therapies.
Bridging clinical expertise and computational engineering, I collaborate with bioengineers to integrate digital health tools, including markerless motion capture (OpenCap) and multimodal sensors (wearables, video and imaging biomarkers, cardiopulmonary exercise testing) into clinical research. Together, we aim to better understand disease mechanisms and functional impact across the drug development pipeline. This work has contributed high-resolution, video-based kinematic datasets and minimal clinically important difference (MCID) thresholds that inform regulatory benchmarks for clinical trials and therapeutic evaluations.
Key Academic & Research Focus Areas:
•Outcome Measure Development & Psychometrics: Developing and validating functional instruments and digital biomarkers designed to meet regulatory standards in rare diseases.
•Digital Biomechanics & Kinematic Modeling: Applying markerless motion capture and wearable inertial sensors to quantify disease progression and subtle changes in movement.
•Translational Clinical Trial Design: Advising on endpoint selection and contributing to international natural history studies to improve trial readiness, reduce participant burden, and strengthen statistical sensitivity.
•Scientific Leadership & Mentorship: Leading multi-center academic consortia, publishing peer-reviewed research, and mentoring the next generation of clinical researchers. -

Timothy Durazzo
Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Public Mental Health and Population Sciences)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe mission of the Durazzo BRASS lab is to better understand how the interplay between biomedical, psychological and social factors influence treatment outcome in Veterans and civilians seeking treatment for alcohol and substance use disorders. To accomplish this mission, our multidisciplinary team integrates information from advanced neuroimaging, neurocognitive assessment, psychodiagnostic and genotyping methods to identify the biopsychosocial factors associated with relapse and sustained sobriety. Data from Veteran's Administration and Stanford funded Clinical trials are currently being analyzed by the BRASS lab to evaluate the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation techniques as novel complementary treatments to reduce the high rate of return to hazardous drinking experienced by individuals with alcohol and substance abuse disorders. The ultimate goal of our multidisciplinary research program is to promote the development of more effective biomedical and behavioral treatments for alcohol and substance use disorders through consideration of the brain biology, psychology and social circumstances of each individual.

Asiri Ediriwickrema MD, PhD
Assistant Professor of Medicine (Hematology)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study hematopoiesis which is the complex process of producing blood cells that are essential for maintaining our basic health and well being. Our mission is to learn how these individual cells change as people age and develop cancer. Blood cell production is driven by the hematopoietic stem cell which gives rise to an incredible diversity of cells throughout life. Our research focuses on how dysregulation of this process leads to cytopenias and hematologic malignancies. We have expertise that spans clinical medicine, functional hematology, molecular and cellular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, and machine learning. By integrating advanced experimental and computational methods, we are examining blood cell development and function at single-cell resolution to advance patient diagnostics and treatment.

Goar Egoryan
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine
BioI am a Clinical Assistant Professor and oncology hospitalist in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. I care for patients with solid tumors admitted with complex, high-acuity conditions, including cancer-related complications, treatment toxicities, infections, malnutrition, and end-of-life care, making complex clinical decisions and navigating high-stakes situations with patients and families, often integrating input from multiple consulting teams.
I received my Doctor of Medicine degree summa cum laude from Novosibirsk State Medical University and completed a two-year rheumatology fellowship in Russia, a specialty defined by multiorgan complexity and the search for systemic connections. I later moved to the United States, where I completed an internal medicine residency at Ascension Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL. During residency, I was named Intern of the Year, received the Great Catch Award for identifying and correcting a patient care error, served as Chief Resident in my third year, and contributed to over 20 publications, half as first author.
My early training in rheumatology, a field centered on systemic disease and pattern recognition, continues to shape how I approach complex illness and informs my interest in integrative medicine. In my current practice, I already incorporate elements of integrative medicine by considering lifestyle, behavioral, and psychosocial factors alongside medical management when caring for complex patients. My current academic interest centers on bringing evidence-based integrative medicine into the inpatient oncology setting. I was recently awarded a Stanford SMART-HM grant to pursue formal training in integrative medicine and to develop a care model that addresses the needs of hospitalized oncology patients beyond disease-directed treatment, including symptom burden and psychological distress. My long-term aim is to expand this approach to broader hospitalized populations while improving patient experience and clinical outcomes. -
