Emily Ferguson, PhD

BioEmily Ferguson, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral academic researcher and clinician within Stanford University’s Autism and Developmental Disorders Research Program (https://med.stanford.edu/autism.html) within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of California Santa Barbara and completed her clinical internship at the University of California Los Angeles. Dr. Ferguson's research focuses on advancing understanding of mechanisms of challenging behaviors in autistic youth and adults to inform treatment development. Her work takes a comprehensive perspective, integrating methods from implementation science to improve the accessibility and quality of clinical care for underserved autistic populations, especially those with higher support needs (or "profound autism"). She is also interested in developing methods to improve self-regulation in individuals with profound autism to effectively manage self-injurious behaviors and aggression. Dr. Ferguson is currently supporting research in the Preschool Autism Lab (https://med.stanford.edu/autismcenter/pre-school-autism-lab-program.html), and exploring profiles of challenging behaviors with the Program for Psychometrics and Measurement-Based Care (https://med.stanford.edu/sppmc.html) in a diverse range of autistic and non-autistic youth to inform treatment approaches.

Staff, Health PolicyBioDr. Jacqueline Ferguson is a Research Investigator at the Palo Alto VA (Veterans Health Administration) and is a researcher with the Center for Population Health Sciences at Stanford Medicine.
She specializes in using secondary data sources such as occupational records, insurance claims, and electronic health records to study the relationship between environmental, social exposures and population health. Her research interests are widespread, but all center around methodology to handle time-varying exposures affected by prior exposure and methodology to account for multiple co-exposures or exposure mixtures. Her most recent work has focused on improving access to care for Veterans by examining patient characteristics associated with the frequency, quantity, and proportion of video-based care used by Veterans.
Jacqueline’s doctoral research at UC Berkeley and the Center for Population Health Sciences at Stanford Medicine has examined the impact of specific components of shift work on worker health, and identified night and rotational work as risk factors for hypertension and Type II diabetes. Jacqueline's current research seeks to understand how multiple social determinants of health can simultaneously influence Veteran care and health within the Veterans Health Administration.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWorking with English- and Spanish-learning children from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, our research examines the importance of early language experience in supporting language development. We are deeply involved in community-based research in San Jose, designing an innovative parent-engagement program for low-resource Latino families with young children. We are also conducting field studies of beliefs about child development and caregiver-child interaction in rural villages in Senegal. A central goal of this translational research is to help parents understand their vital role in facilitating children’s language and cognitive growth.

Marcelo Fernandez Vina

On Leave from 03/02/2026 To 06/10/2026BioMarcelo Fernández-Viña, Ph.D., D (ABHI) is a Professor for the Department of Pathology at Stanford University Medical School and serves as Director of the Histocompatibility, Immunogenetics and Disease Profiling Laboratory at this institution. He has been working in the fields of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics since 1982. He earned a degree in Biochemistry from the School of Basic Sciences in Rosario, Argentina, and his Ph.D. in Internal Medicine from the University of Buenos Aires Medical School in Argentina. Previously he held a position as a Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He has more than 180 peer reviewed publications, many of them focusing on HLA variation in multiple world populations, identifying susceptibility and resistance factors for diseases and in the impact of HLA mismatches in allogeneic transplantation; and 59 book chapters. He served as expert Consultant for Donor Searches for NMDP and as President Elect, President and Past President of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. He served as a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee for the United Network for Organ Sharing. He served as Co-Chair of the Immunobiology Committee of the CIBMTR; He also served as a member of the HHS Advisory Council on Blood Stem Cell Transplantation (ACBSCT).He serves as HLA Expert Consultant for the NMDP for the HRSA contract and is a member of the Histocompatibility Advisory Group for NMDP. He is Councilor of the International Histocompatibility Workshop and a member of the WHO Nomenclature Committee for Factors of the HLA System and was Chairman of the (17th) International HLA & Immunogenetics Workshop, and Past President of the International HLA & Immunogenetics Workshop.

Juan Carlos Fernandez-Miranda, MD, FACS

BioDr. Juan Fernandez-Miranda is Professor of Neurosurgery and Surgical Director of the Stanford Brain Tumor, Skull Base, and Pituitary Centers. He is internationally renowned for his expertise in minimally invasive brain surgery, endoscopic skull base and pituitary surgery, open skull base surgery, and complex brain tumor surgery. He has performed nearly 3,000 cranial operations including over 1,500 endoscopic endonasal operations for pituitary tumors and other skull base lesions. He is highly regarded for his innovative contributions to the development and refinement of endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery, for his ability to select the most effective and less invasive approach to each individual patient, and for his precise knowledge of the intricate anatomy of the white matter tracts required to maximize resection and minimize morbidity on high and low grade glioma patients. He has been recently ranked by Expertscape as World-Expert (top 0.05%) on Skull Base Surgery and #1 Neurosurgeon Expert on Skull Base Tumors (pituitary adenomas, meningiomas, craniopharyngiomas, chordomas, chondrosarcomas, schwannomas and esthesioneuroblastomas) on the US Pacific Region. He is co-founder and vice-president of the International Rhoton Society and executive member of the Board of Directors of the The Neurosurgical Atlas, the largest nonprofit organization for neurosurgical education and research in the world.
Dr. Fernandez-Miranda completed neurosurgery residency at La Paz University Hospital in Madrid, Spain. Upon completion of his residency, he was awarded the Sanitas Prize to the best medical postgraduate trainee in the country. From 2005 to 2007, he underwent fellowship training in microsurgical neuroanatomy at the University of Florida under legendary neurosurgeon Albert L. Rhoton, Jr. From 2007 to 2010 he continued subspecialty clinical training in cerebrovascular surgery at the University of Virginia, and endoscopic endonasal and open skull base surgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). During his 10-year tenure at UPMC, he pioneered endoscopic endonasal approaches to highly complex pituitary and skull base tumors, developed a world-class complex brain surgery program, and led a premier training and research program on surgical neuroanatomy and skull base surgery.
In 2018, he was recruited to bring to Stanford his unique technical expertise and to collaborate with world-renowned Stanford colleagues across multiple disciplines, leading the establishment of one of the most preeminent centers worldwide for comprehensive treatment of complex lesions in the brain, skull base, and pituitary regions. His top priority is to provide gentle, accurate, and safe surgery, in a team-based and compassionate approach to patient care. -
Sebastian Fernandez-Pol

BioDr. Sebastian Fernandez-Pol is an academic hematopathologist with fellowship training in hematopathology and dermatopathology. He has a particular interest in improving diagnostic accuracy for cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders. Dr. Fernandez-Pol received his B.A. in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry from the Washington University in St. Louis in 2003, his MD and PhD from Northwestern University in 2013, and completed his anatomic pathology and clinical pathology residency, hematopathology fellowship, and dermatopathology fellowship at Stanford University in 2019.

Resident in PathologyBioMichael Fernandopulle, M.D., Ph.D., is a resident in clinical pathology at Stanford University. During his graduate work at the NIH with Dr. Michael Ward and at Cambridge with Dr. Peter St. George-Hyslop, he uncovered novel pathways for mRNA localization and local protein synthesis in neurons. He is interested in combining biochemistry, metabolism, and high-throughput cell and subcellular profiling technologies to uncover fundamental principles of aging and neurodegeneration, and to apply these discoveries toward novel diagnostics and therapeutics.
Michael holds an Sc.B. in Chemistry from Brown University, an M.D. from Northwestern University, and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Cambridge, Darwin College. -

My laboratory has unique resources for and substantial experience in synthetic chemistry and ultrasound, CT, MR and PET imaging.

Lorenzo Ferrari
Postdoctoral Scholar, Cardiothoracic Surgery
BioLorenzo Ferrari, PhD, is a biomedical engineer interested in cardiovascular flows, specifically in realizing top benches for in vitro evaluation of cardiac devices. His current postdoctoral research in cardiothoracic surgery focuses on simulating and testing transcatheter valves implanted in the right ventricular outflow tract, working with Doff McElhinney, Daniel Ennis, and Alison Marsden. He obtained his PhD summa cum laude in Biomedical Engineering from University of Bern where he investigated the influence of heart valve design and size under different hemodynamic conditions using particle velocimetry techniques. During his PhD, he performed a secondment at University of Twente, in the Physics of Fluids - Max Planck Center for Complex Fluid, collaborating with Michel Versluis and Guillaume Lajoinie, assessing the stability of flow fields past valve prostheses.

James Ferrell

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy lab has two main goals: to understand the regulation of mitosis and to understand the systems-level logic of simple signaling circuits. We often make use of Xenopus laevis oocytes, eggs, and cell-free extracts for both sorts of study. We also carry out single-cell fluorescence imaging studies on mammalian cell lines. Our experimental work is complemented by computational and theoretical studies aimed at understanding the design principles and recurring themes of regulatory circuits.

Margaret S. Ferris, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor (By courtesy), NeurosurgeryBioDr. Ferris is a fellowship-trained neurologist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology, Division of Movement Disorders.
She diagnoses and treats a breath of movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor. She recognizes the broad effects of these conditions on daily living and aims to develop personalized, comprehensive treatment plans that optimize health and quality of life.
Dr. Ferris research interests focus on access to interventional therapies for movement disorders. She has participated in investigations sponsored by the National Institutes of to evaluate advanced treatments for complications of Parkinson’s disease.
She has co-authored articles in publications such as Nature, The Neurohospitalist, and BioMed Central (BMC) Genomics. She has presented her insights about innovations in the understanding, detection, and management of movement disorders at conferences including, the Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting, Pan American Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Congress.
She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the Movement Disorder Society.

Priya Fielding-Singh

BioI am a Sociologist and Postdoctoral Fellow in Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. My research examines health, gender, and social inequality.
My primary research agenda investigates health disparities across class, race, and gender in the United States. I draw on both qualitative and quantitative methods to understand how neighborhoods, schools, and families shape our health behaviors and outcomes. My work has been published in journals such as Social Science & Medicine, Obesity, Sociological Science, and the Journal of Adolescent Health.
I hold a Ph.D. in Sociology from Stanford University, a M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Bremen, and a B.S. in Education and Social Policy from Northwestern University. -

Caroline Figueroa, MD PhD

Visiting Postdoctoral Scholar, Pediatrics - General PediatricsBioCaroline Figueroa, MD, PhD, is a visiting scholar at Stanford University. She is the 2025–26 Dutch Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice. She is an assistant professor at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands, where she leads the Research on Inclusive Solutions and Empowerment in Digital Health (RISE) group. Her work focuses on making digital mental health solutions — such as apps and AI-chatbots — safe, effective, and accessible, particularly for adolescents, young adults, and women. Figueroa’s research on digital health equity has directly informed policy documents by global organizations such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations, and has been published in leading journals including Lancet Digital Health, Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, and Human Brain Mapping.
Figueroa is a medical doctor with a PhD in the neuroscience of depression from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Oxford; she also has several years of experience in clinical psychiatry. Before joining TU Delft, she was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Berkeley.
