Alexander D. Kaiser

BioAlexander D. Kaiser is a computational scientist and applied mathematician who researches modeling and simulation of heart mechanics. His doctoral work focused on the mitral valve. He currently works in the Stanford Cardiovascular Biomechanics Computation Laboratory, led by Alison Marsden, on modeling cardiac disease.

Alaina Kipps
Clinical Professor, Pediatrics - Cardiology
BioDr. Kipps grew up in Santa Cruz, California and completed her medical degree at Harvard Medical School in 2003. After general pediatrics residency at Stanford, she completed pediatric cardiology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital from 2006 to 2009. Having concentrated her final year of fellowship on echocardiography, she came west to practice at University of California, San Francisco until 2012. She was recruited back to Stanford in 2012 to become the medical director for acute care cardiology and she remained active in the echocardiography laboratory until 2016. In 2014 she co-founded the PAC³ network with Nicolas Madsen and co-directs this today. Her academic focus is in clinical effectiveness and quality improvement science, and she completed her Masters of Science in Epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health in 2016. Her other significant interest is in teaching; she co-directs the pediatric residency cardiology rotation at Stanford.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI have always been fascinated by the process of genetic penetrance, how two people can carry the same mutation but only one of them may be affected.
My main project focuses on understanding the role of TBX4 in the development of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). Mutations in this gene are related to very different diseases. In my research, I mix cellular models, gene editing, and high throughput assays to find the determinants of penetrance in the development of PAH under these conditions. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Cardiovascular Biomechanics Computation Lab at Stanford develops novel computational methods for the study of cardiovascular disease progression, surgical methods, and medical devices. We have a particular interest in pediatric cardiology, and use virtual surgery to design novel surgical concepts for children born with heart defects.

Karthik Menon

BioKarthik Menon is a postdoctoral scholar in the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Computation Laboratory at Stanford University, advised by Alison Marsden. His current research involves the development of computational methods for accurate patient-specific cardiovascular blood flow simulations and uncertainty quantification. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2021, where his doctoral work focused on the flow physics of fluid-structure interactions. His broad research interests include fluid mechanics, computational modeling and data-driven methods.

Mir S Adil

BioDr. Adil is a Postdoctoral Scholar at RabLab in the cardiopulmonary division. He has a PharmD from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (India) and a PhD in Clinical & Experimental Therapeutics from University of Georgia. He has a pre-doctoral experience of three years as a Scientific Writer, Clinical Research Co-ordinator and Clinical Pharmacologist. He has also worked as a Research Pharmacologist at Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center during his PhD. He has served as a Consulting Editor for Dove Medical Press Journals and he has been serving as Editor, Editorial Board Member and Reviewer for several other journals. He has nearly 50 peer-reviewed publications to his name that include book chapters, review and research articles. Besides publications, he has reviewed more than 20 manuscripts for some reputed journals.

Daniel Murphy

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Murphy's major interests are in noninvasive cardiology and clinical pediatric and adult congenital cardiac disease. These clinical interests range from imaging of complex cardiac disease in the fetus and newborn to care of the adult with congenital heart disease. He also coordinates the Marfan clinic at LPCH. He is the director of the Adult Congenital Cardiac Clinic at Stanford University Medical Center.

Martin Pfaller
Instructor, Pediatrics - Cardiology
BioMartin R. Pfaller is an Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics (Cardiology) in the group of Alison L. Marsden. He received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Munich, working with Wolfgang A. Wall. During his Ph.D., he validated an efficient yet physiologically accurate boundary condition to account for the mechanical support of the heart within its surroundings, which has been adopted by various research groups worldwide. He further demonstrated how projection-based model order reduction could speed up model personalization from patient data, such as magnetic resonance imaging or blood pressure measurements. His current work focuses on cardiovascular fluid dynamics. He developed reduced-physics models to make blood flow simulations faster and more reliable. Further, he developed a fluid-solid-growth interaction model in blood vessels. His future research will predict the heart’s long-term function in heart diseases, supported by an NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) and Stanford MCHRI Instructor K Award Support. He will quantify the risk of heart failure after a heart attack with a stability analysis validated with imaging data in swine and humans. This research will improve our understanding of biomechanical mechanisms leading to heart failure and help to identify patients at risk, enable personalized therapies, and facilitate the optimal design of medical devices. As an Assistant Professor, Martin will start his research group at Yale University in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in July 2024.
