Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory studies how bacteria colonize our bodies for long periods of time, and how interactions between bacteria and the epithelial surfaces of the gastrointestinal tract and skin may lead to disease. Epithelial surfaces are the first barrier against infection, but they also where our bodies meet and co-evolve with the microbial world.. Several of our studies have focused on the epithelial junctions as a target for bacterial pathogens. The host epithelium uses its epithelial junctions to form a tight but dynamic barrier with an external surface that is inhospitable to microbial attachment, secretes anti-microbial compounds, and has a rapid rate of self-renewal. The balance in the microbe-epithelial relationship results in silent commensalism or symbiosis; an imbalance results in diseases ranging from acute bacterial invasive disease to chronic ulcers or carcinoma.
Our laboratory has developed novel microscopy applications such as quantitative 3D confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, time-lapse imaging, microinjection and micromanipulation to visualize the interaction of pathogens with epithelial cells in culture and in animal and human tissues. Many of out studies focus on the gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori, but we have also expanded our investigations to include the intestinal pathogens Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica, and the skin pathogen and colonizer Staphylococcus aureus. I believe that elucidating how microbes communicate with and alter our epithelial cells at a molecular level will be important for finding novel therapeutic targets to control mucosal colonization and prevent invasive disease.
Using this perspective, we have uncovered several novel concepts of how bacteria colonize and breach our epithelial surfaces. For example, we discovered that Helicobacter pylori target the intercellular junctions, and in particular that the virulence factor CagA affects junction assembly and cell polarity. This confers H. pylori the ability to extract nutrients and grow directly on the epithelial surface. We also found that these properties of CagA have consequences for cellular transformation of the epithelium. For instance, we showed that H. pylori affect the activity and state of epithelial stem cells in the stomach by colonizing the epithelial surface deep in the gastric glands. This gland-associated population is essential for pathological inflammation and hyperplasia in animal models, and confers significant colonization advantages to the bacteria. Our Listeria research uncovered a new mechanism and site where bacteria can breach the gastrointestinal epithelial barrier to invade. We found that Listeria find their receptor for invasion at sites of epithelial senescence, where the epithelial junctions undergo dynamic turnover. To study Salmonella and H. pylori we have developed a human organoid model to study their interactions with human gut epithelium in vitro. To study Staphylococcus aureus pathogenesis, we have developed methods to visualize infection at the scale of a single bacterial microcolony using an organoid culture system of human keratinocytes and fibroblasts that grow into a 3D skin-equivalent. We recently identified several proteins at the eptithelial junctions as host factors involved in the pathogenesis of one of Staphylococcus aureus major toxins. -

BioDr. An is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle surgery. She provides care at Stanford Health Care locations in Emeryville and Pleasanton.
Her practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment, both nonsurgical and surgical, of foot and ankle conditions, including sports injuries, flatfoot deformity, and ankle arthritis. Working with world-class experts at the Hospital for Specialty Surgery, Dr. An is trained in the latest techniques and technologies, ranging from cartilage repair, minimally invasive bunion correction, to total ankle replacement.
Dr. An is passionate about practicing evidence-based medicine and pursuing research to advance the field of foot and ankle surgery. She works as part of a team with other orthopedic specialists, neurologists, physiatrists, and therapists to help patients achieve the best clinical outcomes. Dr. An believes in understanding each individual’s circumstances and goals to create a personalized care plan. When surgery is deemed the best option, Dr. An guides her patients through every step of getting back on their feet.
Dr. An has been involved in extensive research studying clinical outcomes after surgical correction of foot deformities caused by Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a hereditary condition that results in weaker and smaller muscles. Her work has appeared in several peer-reviewed scientific journals, including Foot & Ankle International and the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, among others. She has also written textbook chapters on flatfoot and bunion surgical techniques, metatarsalgia (pain in the ball of the foot), and Lisfranc (midfoot) injuries.
Dr. An is a licensed physician in California and New York. She is a member of the Western Orthopaedic Association, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. She advocates for diversity in the field of medicine and has served organizations such as the Committee on Inclusion, Equity and Advancement and Women in Orthopaedics Outreach Group at her prior institution. -
Kanwaljeet S. Anand
Professor of Pediatrics (Pediatric Critical Care) and of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Anand is a translational clinical researcher who pioneered research on the endocrine-metabolic stress responses of infants undergoing surgery and developed the first-ever scientific rationale for pain perception in early life. This provided a framework for newer methods of pain assessment, numerous clinical trials of analgesia/anesthesia in newborns, infants and older children. His research focus over the past 30+ years has contributed fundamental knowledge about pediatric pain/stress, long-term effects of pain in early life, management of pain, mechanisms for opioid tolerance and withdrawal. Current projects in his laboratory are focused on developing biomarkers for repetitive pain/stress in critically ill children and the mechanisms underlying sedative/anesthetic neurotoxicity in the immature brain. He designed and directed many randomized clinical trials (RCT), including the largest-ever pediatric analgesia trial studying morphine therapy in ventilated preterm neonates. He has extensive experience in clinical and translational research from participating in collaborative networks funded by NIMH, NINDS, or NICHD, a track-record of excellent collaboration across multiple disciplines, while achieving success with large research teams like the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN). He played a leadership roles in CANDLE (Condition Affecting Neuro-Development & Learning in Early infancy) and other activities of the Urban Child Institute and UT Neuroscience Institute. More recently, he led the NeoOpioid Consortium funded by the European Commission, which collected data from 243 NICUs in 18 European countries.

Christine Anastasiou, MD, MAS

BioDr. Anastasiou is a board-certified, fellowship-trained rheumatologist with the Stanford Health Care Immunology and Rheumatology Clinic. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Anastasiou specializes in diagnosing and treating patients with rheumatic diseases. She has a special interest in ankylosing spondylitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.
Her scholarly work includes epidemiologic studies and clinical trials focused on improving safety and health outcomes for people with chronic rheumatic diseases. Dr. Anastasiou has served as an investigator and collaborator for clinical trials of new therapies to treat rheumatic disease. She is actively involved in medical education through developing and leading patient, medical student, resident, and fellow educational programs.
Dr. Anastasiou is a member of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR). She has published her research in peer-reviewed journals, including Arthritis Care & Research and Lupus Science & Medicine. She has delivered lectures and presentations across the country and abroad on various topics related to rheumatology. -

Kazuo Ando

BioBorn and raised in Japan, Dr. Ando received an MD-PhD degree from the Aichi Medical University. After anesthesia training, Dr. Ando came to Stanford to pursue clinical and basic research experience. During his postdoctoral fellowship in Dr. Gaudilliere's laboratory, Dr. Ando worked on publication of “A next-generation single-cell technology (mass cytometry) to study the feto-maternal immune system,” a project designed to evaluate the immune response associated with preterm birth. In addition, Dr. Ando performs research in Obstetric Anesthesia, such as respiratory monitoring after cesarean sections and labor satisfaction, to obtain clinical research experience and to understand the key differences in medicine between the United States and Japan.
After his postdoctoral fellowship, Dr. Ando has maintained his status as a researcher in Dr. Gaudilliere's laboratory, continuing work relating to pregnancy and preterm birth.

Katrin Andreasson

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research focuses on understanding how immune responses initiate and accelerate synaptic and neuronal injury in age-related neurodegeneration, including models of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. We also focus on the role of immune responses in aggravating brain injury in models of stroke. Our goal is the identification of critical immune pathways that function in neurologic disorders and that can be targeted to elicit disease modifying effects.

Lay Teng Ang
Assistant Professor of Urology
BioAs a stem cell biologist, I aim to understand the mechanisms through which stem cells differentiate into progressively specialized cell types and to harness this knowledge to artificially generate pure populations of desired cell types from stem cells. My work over the past ten years has centered on pluripotent stem cells (PSCs, which include embryonic and pluripotent stem cells), which can generate any of the hundreds of diverse cell types in the body. However, it has been notoriously challenging to guide PSCs to differentiate into a pure population of a given cell type. Current differentiation strategies typically generate heterogeneous cell populations unsuitable for basic research or clinical applications. To address this challenge, I mapped the cascade of branching lineage choices through which PSCs differentiate into various endodermal and mesodermal cell types. I then developed effective methods to differentiate PSCs into specific lineages by providing the extracellular signal(s) that specify a given lineage while inhibiting the signals that induce the alternate fate(s), enabling the generation of highly-pure human heart and bone (Loh & Chen et al., 2016; Cell) and liver (Loh & Ang et al., 2014; Cell Stem Cell) from PSCs. My laboratory currently focuses on differentiating human PSCs into liver progenitors (Ang et al., 2018; Cell Reports) and blood vessel cells (Ang et al., 2022; Cell).
I earned my Ph.D. jointly from the University of Cambridge and A*STAR and was subsequently appointed as a Research Fellow and, later, a Senior Research Fellow at the Genome Institute of Singapore. I then moved my laboratory to Stanford University as a Siebel Investigator and Instructor at the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology & Regenerative Medicine. In 2024, I am jointly appointed in the Stanford Department of Urology and Stem Cell Institute as an Assistant Professor. My laboratory has been supported by the Stanford Maternal & Child Health Research Institute, California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Siebel Investigatorship, Additional Ventures, and other sources. -
Michael Angelo
Associate Professor of Pathology
BioMichael Angelo, MD PhD is a board-certified pathologist and assistant professor in the department of Pathology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Angelo is a leader in high dimensional imaging with expertise in tissue homeostasis, tumor immunology, and infectious disease. His lab has pioneered the construction and development of Multiplexed Ion Beam Imaging by time of flight (MIBI-TOF). MIBI-TOF uses secondary ion mass spectrometry and metal-tagged antibodies to achieve rapid, simultaneous imaging of dozens of proteins at subcellular resolution. In recognition of this achievement, Dr. Angelo received the NIH Director’s Early Independence award in 2014. His lab has since used this novel technology to discover previously unknown rule sets governing the spatial organization and cellular composition of immune, stromal, and tumor cells within the tumor microenvironment in triple negative breast cancer. These findings were found to be predictive of single cell expression of several immunotherapy drug targets and of 10-year overall survival. This effort has led to ongoing work aimed at elucidating structural mechanisms in the TME that promote recruitment of cancer associated fibroblasts, tumor associated macrophages, and extracellular matrix remodeling. Dr. Angelo is the recipient of the 2020 DOD Era of Hope Award and a principal investigator on multiple extramural awards from the National Cancer Institute, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Human Biomolecular Atlas (HuBMAP) initiative.

DIABETES
The prevalence of diabetes is increasing at a staggering rate. By the year 2050 an astounding 25% of Americans will be diabetic. The goal of my research is to uncover therapeutic strategies to stymie the ensuing diabetes epidemic. To achieve this goal we have developed a variety of innovate experimental approaches to uncover novel approaches to curing diabetes.
(1) Beta-Cell Regeneration: Diabetes results from either an absolute or relative deficiency in insulin production. Our therapeutic strategy is to stimulate the regeneration of insulin-producing beta-cells to enhance an individual’s insulin secretion capacity. We have developed a unique high-throughput chemical screening platform which we use to identify small molecules that promote beta-cell growth. This work has led to the identification of key molecular pathways (therapeutic targets) and candidate drugs that promote the growth and regeneration of islet beta-cells. Our goal is to utilize these discoveries to treat and prevent diabetes.
(2) The Metabolic Syndrome: A major cause of the diabetes epidemic is the rise in obesity which leads to a cluster of diabetes- and cardiovascular disease-related metabolic abnormalities that shorten life expectancy. These physiologic aberrations are collectively termed the Metabolic Syndrome (MS). My laboratory has developed an original in vivo screening platform t to identify novel hormones that influence the behaviors (excess caloric consumption, deficient exercise and disrupted sleep-wake cycles) and the metabolic abnormalities caused by obesity. We aim to manipulate these hormone levels to prevent the development and detrimental consequences of the MS.
HEREDIATY PARAGAGLIOMA SYNDROME
The Hereditary Paraganglioma Syndrome (hPGL) is a rare genetic cancer syndrome that is most commonly caused by a defect in mitochondrial metabolism. Our goal is to understand how altered cellular metabolism leads to the development of cancer. Although hPGL is uncommon, it serves as an excellent model for the abnormal metabolic behavior displayed by nearly all cancers. Our goal is to develop novel therapeutic strategies that target the abnormal behavior of cancer cells. In the laboratory we have developed hPGL mouse models and use high throughput chemical screening to identify the therapeutic susceptibilities that result from the abnormal metabolic behavior of cancer cells.
As a physician scientist trained in clinical genetics I have developed expertise in hereditary endocrine disorders and devoted my efforts to treating families affected by the hPGL syndrome. By leveraging our laboratory expertise in the hPGL syndrome, our care for individuals who have inherited the hPGL syndrome is at the forefront of medicine. Our goal is to translate our laboratory discoveries to the treatment of affected families. -

David Ansel

BioI graduated from UCLA (now Geffen) School of Medicine, did my pediatrics residency at Columbia-Presbyterian in NYC, followed by a clinical fellowship in developmental (what was then called an “ambulatory”) pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital. The first 28 years of my career were spent in clinical practice combining both DBP and primary care (the latter focused on serving CSHCN). During those years I was involved in numerous divide-bridging efforts - including programs to coordinate inpatient & outpatient medicine, connect tertiary & primary care, and promote teamwork between pediatricians, psychologists, nurse practitioners, and other community partners. I founded my own solo practice in 1989 and managed its growth to an 8-provider group over the next 25 years. Our practice was a founding member of the PPOC and I served on its board of directors for 6 years. The PPOC is one of the largest pediatric IPA’s in the country, with >200 member providers affiliated with Boston Children's Hospital. Over the years we were involved in groundbreaking QI initiatives including those involving asthma, weight, and ADHD management; medical home; and behavioral health integration with primary care.
I’m now well into my career's “second act” on the clinician-educator track here at Stanford. I'm proud to have piloted our division's primary care initiative (DBPCI) and am now in the process of planning for a second phase thereof, hoping to make improved collaboration between DBP and primary care more available to more patients. I also pioneered the use of telehealth in our division, and then helped guide its sudden widespread adoption by my peers during the COVID-19 crises. Looking forward, I expect what we have learned during the pandemic will inform what we do for DBPCI 2.0. -

Danit Ariel

BioDanit Ariel, MD MS, is board certified in Endocrinology. Dr. Ariel graduated from UC Davis School of Medicine. She then completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford and a fellowship and post-doctorate in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Stanford before joining the faculty at Stanford.
Dr. Ariel practices general endocrinology, with a special interest in menopause, LGBTQ+ health, transgender medicine, reproductive endocrinology and thyroid disorders amongst others.
She believes in practicing compassionate care: in listening to her patients’ concerns, respecting their values, communicating well, and providing an evidence-based approach to help guide individualized treatment plans. She is deeply committed to utilizing her expertise in the field of endocrinology to optimize her patients’ health and well-being.
Dr. Ariel is passionate about medical education and teaching, and serves on the teaching faculty in the Stanford University School of Medicine. She completed an honors certificate in medical education from Stanford. She is the Founding Director of the Student Guidance Program for medical students. Finally, within the division of Endocrinology, she is the Director of Faculty Wellness.

BioI am a critical care anesthesiologist who is devoted to providing excellent clinical care for the sickest patients and their families as well as training our next generation of leaders in critical care medicine.
The ICU is a unique and fascinating world where I get to combine my love of abnormal physiology, teaching, high-stakes medical care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and deep connections with patients and families. As an intensivist, anesthesiologist, and medical educator, there is no place where this is truer than at Stanford. After completing both medical school and anesthesiology residency at Stanford, I experienced the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic along with the innovation and collaboration that can result from moments of crisis as an Critical Care Medicine fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital. I was drawn to return to Stanford to join our incredible group of intensivists based on the emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and professional growth. This rich environment is filled with interesting medicine and brilliant colleagues; it is a place that supports my goals of educating and training future leaders in critical care medicine while taking care of the sickest patients in the hospital and their families.
While clinical practice is the foundation of what I love about being a physician, I am also interested in leadership development both through education and research. I have a Masters of Science in Teaching and spent two years as a high school chemistry teacher in the South Bronx through Teach for America where I focused on curriculum development. In residency, I became interested in feedback and led a mixed methods research study that identified gender bias in resident feedback during the early years of anesthesiology residency. Currently, I am the Associate Program Director of our Anesthesia Critical Care fellowship and am the Director of the required clerkship for medical students in the ICU. I feel incredibly privileged to work in a place that supports these pursuits and encourages me to be the best physician, colleague, and educator I can be. -

He is board certified in Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, and Addiction Medicine.
Before coming to Stanford Dr. Armontrout worked as a staff psychiatrist for the Palo Alto VA Healthcare System at the Trauma Recovery Program, a residential treatment program focusing on PTSD, other trauma-related disorders, and substance use disorders. For a portion of Dr. Armontrout's time with the VA he served as the Medical Director for the Trauma Recovery Program.
In addition to his forensic fellowship activities, Dr. Armontrout currently serves as an attending in the Stanford PTSD clinic and the dual diagnosis clinic. -

BioDr. Arroyo specializes in the treatment of allergic conditions including drug allergy and asthma. Her research focuses on understanding early life risk factors for allergic disease development and how allergies change over a person's lifetime.

Maja Artandi, MD
Clinical Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Artandi is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health at Stanford. She is a leader in Primary Care, spearheading novel methods of health care delivery and education. She offers an impressive clinical background and has received several educational and leadership awards.
Her expertise lies in the development and implementation of a medical curriculum focused on the patient-physician interaction, emphasizing communication skills, physical examination skills and medical decision making to support best clinical practices.
Dr. Artandi is a dedicated Primary Care physician and educator and has served as a mentor for many students, residents and colleagues. She is currently the mentorship lead for the Division of Primary Care and Population Health.
She is in the process of getting an executive coaching certification and is faculty for the Advancing Communication Excellence at Stanford Program with the goal of helping her colleagues improve their communication skills.
From 2013-2021 she was the Co-Director of Primary Care education for the Stanford Internal Medicine residency program and co-founded and co-directed the Primary Care program (ACE) within the Stanford Internal Medicine Residency program.
Dr. Artandi is currently the Co-President of the Society of Bedside Medicine, an international society dedicated to studying and improving the patient/physician interaction.
She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh and of the American College of Physicians and currently serves as the Wellness chair for the Northern California ACP chapter.
