BioSimar Bajaj is a medical student and Knight-Hennessy Scholar at Stanford University School of Medicine with interests in internal medicine, health policy, and science journalism. He studied Global Health Science and Epidemiology at the University of Oxford as a Marshall Scholar and studied Chemistry and the History of Science at Harvard University, where he graduated summa cum laude.
His research focuses on stigmatized diseases like obesity, lung cancer, and substance use disorder with first-author work in The Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine, British Medical Journal, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Annals of Surgery. An award-winning journalist and former New York Times reporter, Simar's work has also appeared in NPR, The Atlantic, The Economist, The Washington Post, and National Geographic. In addition to being named Forbes 30 Under 30, he has won the Kavli Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was named the top early-career science journalist by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe examine how cells communicate and function during fetal development. The work in my laboratory focuses on the establishment of specific cell fates using genomics to decipher interactions between chromatin and developmental signaling cascades, between genomes and rapidly evolving cell types, and between genomic copy number variation and gene expression. In recent years we have focused on the vastly understudied biology of the trophoblast lineage, particularly how this lineage evolved.
