    Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery (Adult Cardiac Surgery)

    BioDr. Anson M. Lee is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon with Stanford Health Care. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Division of Adult Cardiac Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Lee specializes in treating all types of heart disease, such as blocked arteries, structural and valve issues, and aortic conditions. He has a special interest in treating abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and performing advanced procedures, such as video-assisted thoracoscopic hybrid ablation for difficult-to-treat atrial fibrillation. He uses minimally invasive techniques whenever possible to reduce risk and ease recovery for his patients.

    In addition to patient care, Dr. Lee is a dedicated heart researcher. His recent studies have focused on optimizing treatment for atrial fibrillation, heart and lung transplantation, and valve disease, as well as improving organ preservation for lung transplantation. He is one of only a few cardiothoracic surgeons in the world publishing research on hybrid ablation and has built a leading hybrid ablation center in collaboration with Stanford Medicine electrophysiologists.

    Dr. Lee has published his findings in leading medical journals, such as The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He participates in drafting clinical guidelines and currently serves on the Cardiac Clinical Practice Standards Committee of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS). He has also written several book chapters on cardiac surgery techniques, complications, and innovations. He regularly shares his research and expertise around the world, from presenting at the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions to speaking at the AATS Foundation programs and symposiums in Thailand and China.

    Dr. Lee is a member of the prestigious AATS. He is also a member of the AHA and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

    BioDr. Lee is a native of New York City. He attended the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at the City College of New York and received his medical degree from New York Medical College. He completed general surgery residency training at Lenox Hill Hospital and fellowship training in surgical oncology at the City of Hope National Cancer Center. Dr. Lee led the Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Program at City of Hope prior to joining Stanford in 2019.

    Dr. Lee is a surgical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies. He has dedicated his clinical practice to the surgical management of metastatic disease, particularly to the liver and peritoneum. He has expertise in delivering regional cancer therapies such as heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Additionally, he performs surgery for cancers of the stomach, liver, pancreas, small intestine, colon, and soft tissue sarcoma. He utilizes minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques when appropriate.

    Dr. Lee leads the Regional Cancer Therapies program at Stanford. The program implements and develops novel treatment strategies for patients affected with peritoneal malignancies and oligometastatic disease to the liver. His research focus is on clinical outcomes of multidisciplinary management for gastric, hepatobiliary, and peritoneal surface malignancies. He is a member of a national consensus group performing collaborative research and developing clinical trials for HIPEC surgeries.

    BioDr. Byron Lee is Professor of Medicine in the Stanford Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiac Electrophysiology Section. He has published over 150 peer reviewed articles and 10 book chapters. He has written two books to help students navigate the medical school admission process: Insider's Premed Guidebook and Insider's High School Premed Guidebook. His research team studies treatments to prevent sudden cardiac death, atrial fibrillation, and complications of cardiac device lead extraction. He has won numerous teaching awards for his work with medical students, residents, and fellows. He currently teaches ECG reading to medical students in the Stanford Medical School course INDE 205 Practice of Medicine. He also serves as Chief of Cardiac Electrophysiology at the Palo VA Medical Center and Head Cardiologist for University of California Athletics.

    Professor Lee studies the effect of human cognitive constraints on market participants and other factors that impact the efficiency with which market prices incorporate information. He has published extensively in leading academic journals in accounting and finance on topics that include behavioral finance, market microstructure, equity valuation, financial analysis, quantitative investing, and security market regulation.

    From 2004 to July 2008, Dr. Lee was Managing Director at Barclays Global Investors (BGI; now Blackrock). As Global Head of Equity Research and Co-Head of North America Active Equities, he led the firm’s world-wide active equity research team and was jointly responsible for its North American active equity business. During his tenure, BGI had over $300 billion in active equity asset under management. He joined Stanford GSB as Visiting Professor in July 2008 while continuing to serve as an exclusive senior consultant to BGI, and became a full-time faculty member in July 2009.

    Dr. Lee has received numerous honors, including the Notable Contribution to Accounting Literature Prize, as well as twelve school-wide or national-level Teaching Excellence Awards. Most recently, he was honored with the Harry Lyman Hooker Distinguished Visiting Professorship, McMaster University, 2021; Keynote Speaker at the JIAR Annual Conference, 2021; and the Best Paper Award, AAA Spark Conference, Western Regional, 2021. He has been the Presidential Scholar of the AAA, and recipient of the Stanford University Asian American Faculty Award for Outstanding Achievements and Service to the University and to the Asian American Community.

    Professor Lee has been Editor or Associate Editor of a number of academic journals, including: The Accounting Review, the Journal of Finance, Management Science (Finance), the Journal of Accounting and Economics, the Journal of Accounting Research, the Review of Accounting Studies, and the Financial Analysts Journal. His research has also been featured in such popular media outlets as: the Economist, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio (NPR), the LA Times, Business Week, CNBC, Forbes, Barron's, Worth, Smart Money, and Institutional Investors.

    Professor Lee received his BMath from the University of Waterloo (1981), and his MBA (1989) and PhD (1990) from Cornell University. He has been a faculty member at the Michigan Business School (1990-95) the Johnson Graduate School of Management, Cornell University (1996-2004), and the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University (2009-2021). From 1995-96 he was Visiting Economist at the New York Stock Exchange.

    Prior to entering academic life, he spent five years in public accounting, the last three in the National Research Department of KPMG, Toronto, Canada. He holds a Certificate in Biblical Studies from Ontario Theological Seminary, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

    BioDr. Chaw-Ning Lee is a dermatologist and completed her dermatology education at National Cheng Kung University and Hospital and is a member of Taiwan Dermatology Association and Taiwanese Society for Investigative Dermatology. She earned her Ph.D. in pharmacoepidemiology and has experience in real-world evidence and Phase IV post-marketing studies using large databases. Since November 2023, Dr. Lee has been a visiting scholar in Program in Epithelial Biology and Pediatric Dermatology, Department of Dermatology at Stanford University. Her areas of special interest include skin cancer, pharmacoepidemiology, psoriasis, pediatric dermatology and drug eruptions.

    BioGrace Lee, Ph.D. is a Clinical Assistant Professor and a CA Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.     BioDr. Grace Lee is Chief Quality Officer and the Christopher G. She oversees the Center for Pediatric and Maternal Value that seeks to improve quality, safety, patient experience and health equity across the organization. Dr. Lee previously served as a member of the Institute of Medicine Committee (IOM) to Review Priorities in the National Vaccine Plan, the IOM Committee on the Ethical and Scientific Issues in Studying the Safety of Approved Drugs, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Committee on Vaccine Research and Development Recommendations for Advancing Pandemic and Seasonal Influenza Preparedness and Response, and AHRQ's Healthcare Safety and Quality Improvement Research Study Section.     BioDr. Lee is a fellowship-trained head and neck surgical oncologist with Stanford Medicine Cancer Center’s Head and Neck Cancer Program. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    He treats benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck, including oral cancer, tonsil cancer, throat cancer, and thyroid cancer. As a result of his fellowship training, he also specializes in minimally invasive transoral surgery, organ preserving laryngeal surgery, and microvascular free flap reconstruction. Microvascular free flap reconstruction involves moving a piece of tissue, with blood vessels included, to a different part of the body to preserve function after cancer therapy.

    Dr. Lee’s research interests include assessment of head and neck cancer treatment outcomes and development of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in order to optimize form and function. He has also studied new therapies for smell and taste loss, including the design and implementation of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

    He has published in several peer-reviewed journals, including JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery, Head & Neck, Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery, and Laryngoscope. He has presented to his peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including the annual meetings of the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS), American Rhinologic Society (ARS), and the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS).

    Dr. Lee is a member of the AHNS, AAO-HNS, and Triological Society. He has previously served as the chair of the AAO-HNS Foundation Section for Residents and Fellows-in-Training.

    BioDr. Jinwoo Lee is a physician-scientist and board-certified dermatologist on the clinical faculty in the School of Medicine. He received his B.S. in biology from Caltech and his M.D./Ph.D. from the UCSF Medical Scientist Training Program. Dr. Lee completed his residency in dermatology at Stanford, where he joined the Investigative Training Track to conduct basic science research in autoimmunity and inflammation. Dr. Lee’s scientific research focuses on identifying the mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of autoimmune diseases. His clinical interests include medical management of complex dermatologic conditions, autoimmune skin diseases, as well as general dermatology.

    Dr. Lee is currently only seeing patients on Monday afternoons at the Stanford Medicine Outpatient Center in Redwood City.

Dr. Lee’s academic interests include interventional pain management in acute care settings, ED utilization and management for acute and chronic painful conditions, and transitions of care between inpatient and outpatient settings.     Research:
    His research focuses on the causes and consequences of, as well as solutions to, rising skepticism and distrust in sources of expert information (e.g., science, health). He has a special interest in exploring skepticism and persuasion at the intersection of health and politics, which includes studying phenomena such as the politicization of science and health, political polarization, filter bubbles/echo chambers, the emerging post-truth world, and information warfare. It also includes seeking heteorgeneity in the findings across particular demographics at high socioeconomic and health risk. He draws on theories and methods from his uniquely interdisciplinary set of educational, research, and professional experiences, including those from experimental and behavioral economics, political science, psychology, philosophy, and machine learning. He is currently using machine learning-based text analytics to explore how trust/distrust in sources of expert information is discussed on traditional and social media -- followed by the use of online randomized controlled survey experiments to test the causal effects of particular persuasion strategies on perceptions of trust/distrust, as well as other important behavioral outcomes of interest.

    Violinist Joo-Mee Lee has taken on several roles in the Department of Music at Stanford University since the fall of 2014. She served as director of the Stanford New Ensemble. As a Lecturer, she teaches courses on Introductory Violin and Professional Development in Music, and also gives individual lessons. She has worked closely with the Stanford Symphony and Philharmonia, and has overseen the annual Concerto Competition.

    Previously, Lee served as an artist-in-residence and violin faculty at the University of Denver and at Colorado College. She also taught at Brandeis University, and was a sought-after teacher at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School in Boston.

    A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Lee earned her Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University where she was a Roman Totenberg Scholarship recipient. Her doctoral dissertation is entitled An Analytical Study of Three String Quartets of Bernard Rands.

    As a young musician, Lee was chosen to represent South Korea for the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, which performed at the Berlin Philharmonie, Leipzig Gewandhaus, and Amsterdam Concertgebouw. She was a founding member of the Tonos String Quartet which won New England Conservatory’s Honor’s Quartet position. Her quartet took part in the Bank of America Celebrity Series with Rob Capilow, and performed live on Boston's WGBH radio among other concert venues throughout New England. The quartet was invited by the Joong-Ang Daily Newspaper to give a recital at Hoam Art Hall in Seoul, Korea.

    Lee has been invited to various music festivals including Aspen, Banff, and Sarasota where she performed solo and chamber recitals. While she was in graduate school, she won a position in the DaVinci Quartet and toured throughout the United States, giving concerts and masterclasses. Concurrently, she won a position in the Colorado Springs Symphony (now Philharmonic), and became a tenured member.

    As an avid new music advocate, Lee gave world premieres of chamber music and solo works by many contemporary composers. Among the composers with whom she has closely collaborated are Bernard Rands, Augusta Read Thomas, Samuel Adler, and Jennifer Higdon.

    BioDr. Julie J. Lee is a board-certified physician in Internal Medicine, Obesity Medicine, and Clinical Informatics at Stanford, where she works at the intersection of technology, precision health, and real-world clinical care.

    As Health Equity Informaticist in Stanford's Division of Primary Care and Population Health, she leads data-informed strategies to evaluate and integrate digital health tools into clinical environments. Her work spans AI in healthcare, remote patient monitoring, patient portal communication, and clinical decision support, with a focus on ensuring these tools are clinically grounded, operationally feasible, and built around how patients and clinicians actually work. She advises industry and innovators on what it takes to move from promising technology to real-world impact.

    Her clinical practice centers on obesity medicine and cardiometabolic health, where she applies precision and individualized approaches to challenge one-size-fits-all frameworks. She advocates for moving beyond outdated BMI-driven care toward more meaningful measures such as body composition, while helping build evidence that better reflects the diversity of patients, including Asian and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.

    Health equity and ethics shape how she approaches research, clinical care, and technology evaluation. As a physician who speaks both the language of medicine and the language of technology, Dr. Lee is interested in designing healthcare systems that strengthen clinical reasoning, improve communication between patients and clinicians and across interprofessional care teams, and ensure technology enhances the human practice of medicine.

    BioNicolas Lee is currently a Senior Lecturer in Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University and specializes in teaching hands-on design skills. Previously, Nicolas was a research engineer studying hypervelocity impact plasma, meteor radar observations, and mission concepts using deployable structures and CubeSat technologies. Nicolas was a Ph.D. student at Stanford focused on meteoroid impact effects on spacecraft, and a W. M. Keck Institute for Space Studies postdoctoral scholar in aerospace at Caltech researching technologies for robotically assembled space telecopes, membrane structures for space solar power applications, and small satellite high voltage electronics.
