Emily Jiang
Graduate Admissions System and Operations Manager, Graduate Admissions
BioEmily started her journey at Stanford in 2010 as a graduate student in chemistry. Through her experiences teaching undergraduates and mentoring other teaching assistants in chemistry, she discovered her passion for helping students navigate the intricacies of their academic experience, and this led her to shift her career path toward higher education administration after earning her M.S. in Chemistry in 2012.
Emily spent the early part of her career working in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Graduate School of Business in functions that span graduate admissions, student life, and course registration for the largest graduate student populations on campus (1000+). In these student services roles, she was always drawn to systems and making operations run more efficiently, and this led her to pursue a unique opportunity to serve as the technical lead for Knight-Hennessy Scholars starting in 2018, the year of the program's inaugural cohort.
In 2021, Emily joined Student and Academic Services as the first Graduate Admissions System and Operations Manager. In this hybrid technical/managerial role, she hopes to establish a strong structure to actively configure and maintain Stanford's new graduate admissions system (Slate by Technolutions), while nurturing a community across campus that will work together to optimize the applicant, staff, and faculty experience. Outside of work, she plays violin in the Palo Alto Philharmonic and practices "kitchen chemistry" through her love of cooking. -

BioDr. Johnson is the Associate Vice Provost for Research Compliance at Stanford University, overseeing both human and animal research compliance programs. She specializes in research ethics and is an expert in human subjects research regulations and requirements. She is an active member of the research community having conducted research in the fields of public health and research ethics. She has taught undergraduate- and graduate-level courses and is an ardent supporter of research education. She participates in many national forums with the federal government, accrediting bodies, commercial IRBs, and academic research institutions to address problems and priorities for research oversight and quality. She helped establish a single IRB process for the University of Utah and the National Center for Advancing Translational Science-funded Trial Innovation Network. She also worked closely with the SMART IRB initiative to provide harmonized guidance on IRB reliance and the functions of human research protection programs. She also serves as a site visitor for the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs.

Thomas Johnson

BioTom manages communications for two water-related programs within the Stanford Woods Insitute for the Environment: Water in the West; and Water, Health & Development. Prior to coming to Stanford in 2022, Tom managed a graduate program at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo that prepared students for careers in the dairy foods industry. A seasoned communications professional, he once served as business editor at The Coloradoan, a Gannett daily newspaper, and was editor of Outlook Magazine, a publication of Colorado State University's College of Natural Sciences. Tom earned a Master's degree in Watershed Science from Colorado State University and was the founding director of the Colorado Springs-based Fountain Creek Watershed Project, an intergovernmental task force that won consensus buy-in for a plan that guides management of the Pikes Peak watershed. Tom is also an award-winning cheesemaker and musician.

Research Assistant for the Hoover Technology Policy Accelerator, HOOVER RESEARCHBioEmerson Johnston is a Research Assistant at the Hoover Institution’s Technology Policy Accelerator, where she works on the Stanford Emerging Technology Review and research related to emerging technologies and their impact on national security. She is currently on leave from Stanford’s MA program in the History of Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine, where her thesis examines how institutional and historical legacies have shaped the framing of the internet as a telecommunications system rather than a civic or social space. More broadly, her research focuses on the sociocultural implications of digital platforms, algorithmic governance, and the intersection of technology and international policy. A first-generation, lower-income college student and a native of Los Angeles, California, she received an B.S. in ‘Politics, Philosophy, and Economics’ and in ‘History, Culture, and Law’, summa cum laude, from Northeastern University and an MA in International Policy from Stanford, where she is a Knight-Hennessy Scholar.

Jamie S. Johnston

BioJamie Johnston is the Research and Evaluation Director for the Stanford Center for Health Education. Her work focuses on the use of technology to improve educational access and health education in under-resourced areas. Jamie completed a PhD in Economics of Education at the Stanford Graduate School of Education in 2017, where she was an Institute of Education Sciences (IES) doctoral fellow. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Stanford School of Medicine. Additionally, Jamie holds a BS in Social Policy from Northwestern University, an MPP from the University of Chicago, and an MA in Economics from Stanford University.

She believes that creative visualization provides a rare power to engage learners, simplify complexity, and inspire research. Previously, Semay worked at Macmillan Learning developing HTML5 interactive science modules and created surgical and anatomical illustrations at Body Scientific International. She holds an M.S. in Biomedical Visualization from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
