Ugur Parlatan

BioDr. Ugur Parlatan is a Basic Life Research Scientist at the Canary Center at Stanford for Cancer Early Detection. Trained as a physicist, he leads photonics laboratory activities and develops optical spectroscopy and imaging approaches for molecular fingerprinting and characterization of extracellular vesicles (EVs). His work includes designing and optimizing measurement workflows, analyzing EV signatures from biomedical samples, and supporting disease-focused studies across cancer and metabolic conditions (including lung cancer, glioblastoma, pancreatic cancer, diabetes, and hepatotoxicity). He also mentors trainees (including NIH CREST program interns) and contributes to manuscripts and grant applications.

Akshay Paruchuri

AI4ALL Graduate Mentor, Stanford Pre-Collegiate StudiesBioI'm a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, advised by Professor Ehsan Adeli. I'm affiliated with the Stanford Translational AI (STAI) Lab and the Stanford Vision and Learning (SVL) Lab. I earned my PhD in computer science at UNC Chapel Hill under the advisement of Professor Henry Fuchs. I build and evaluate multimodal AI systems, from general-purpose methods for interactive computing to applications in healthcare. Currently, I'm working toward a future where multimodal AI can safely and reliably integrate into healthcare systems in order to improve the entire patient journey, from advanced diagnostic imaging and surgical support to all-day health monitoring and management, with the aim to achieve better therapeutic outcomes for cancer and aging-related diseases. I'm generally interested in opportunities that would allow me to continue to deepen my research expertise while leading and working on projects that benefit people everywhere, whether through foundational research, real-world products, or shaping how these systems are evaluated and deployed.
Previously, I was a visiting researcher at IDSIA USI-SUPSI working with Professor Piotr Didyk on the interpretability of multimodal language models (MLMs) with respect to capabilities such as visual perception. I've published in leading venues on topics such as remote health sensing (WACV, NeurIPS), 3D reconstruction (ECCV, MICCAI), LLM-based conversational agents for personal health (EMNLP, Nature Communications), and energy-efficient operation of smart glasses (ISMAR). I've done internships at Google AR/VR, Google Consumer Health Research, and Kitware. -

Vishal Patel

BioVishal Patel joins Lane Medical Library from a career spanning clinical AI product development, healthcare analytics, and luxury wellness hospitality. He holds an MD and PhD (genetics) from Case Western Reserve University and a BS in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech. Most recently, he served as President and Chief Science & Innovation Officer at Sensei, leading technology, R&D, and scientific affairs. His prior work includes building NLP-powered clinical products at Pieces Technologies, teaching clinical informatics at Case Western Reserve, and founding Phronos, a research studio developing computational tools to measure AI's effects on human cognition. At Lane, he leads digital strategy for the library's 43-million-record biomedical search infrastructure, with a focus on augmenting knowledge discovery while preserving the critical role of libraries in the evidence-based practice of medicine and science. He also serves as Vice Chair of the Men's Wellbeing Initiative at the Global Wellness Institute.

BioAnkita Patil is a public health researcher focused on advancing health equity through a social justice–centered framework. She holds a B.A. in Social Psychology from The College of New Jersey and an M.S. in Community Health and Prevention Research from Stanford University. Her research experience includes work at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Johns Hopkins University, where she examined the health impacts of incarceration, trauma-informed care, and reproductive health among incarcerated populations. Ankita is a co-author of an American Public Health Association policy statement calling for an end to shackling incarcerated patients and has peer-reviewed work on COVID-19 in Massachusetts prisons. Her work bridges research, policy, and community-based advocacy to advance humane public health solutions.

She has been a hospital medicine attending since 2015 and serves at the Director of Nocturnists and Director of Surgical Comanagement at VA Palo Alto.
Her professional interests include medical education, night medicine and physician wellness. She coteaches the Resiliency Curriculum Series for the internal medicine residency program and is a certified Physician Coach.

Leonardo Paulo Guimaraes De Assis

With nine years at Stanford, he was Lecturer at Department of Philosophy (2018), a Research Associate (2015-2018), and Visiting Scholar (2013-2015) at the Center for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI), Lecturer at Symbolic Systems Program since 2018, and instructor at Stanford Continuing Studies .
He received his Bachelors degree in mathematics from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and he has Master and PhD degrees in Physics from Brazilian Center for Research in Physics, Brazil, with publication in nonlinear dynamics, quantum field theory, nuclear physics, atomic physics, cosmology, physics of plasmas and quantum-like formalism applied to cognition.
He also has an interest in Quantum Computing, Quantum Information, Neurophysics, and Artificial Consciousness.
He is currently employing techniques from dynamical systems, and field theory to model the so-called "Neural Binding Problem". That is an open problem of great interest to Neuroscience, Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science and Philosophy of Mind. -
Selvi R. Paulraj, PhD

BioDr. Selvi R. Paulraj is a fellowship-trained neuropsychologist at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Paulraj specializes in assessing a variety of neurological conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease. She also conducts presurgical neuropsychological evaluations for deep brain stimulation in Parkinson’s disease and surgical interventions for epilepsy.
Dr. Paulraj’s research focuses on mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques to improve aging and stroke recovery. She also explores emotional and psychosocial factors that impact health in patients with multiple sclerosis and dementia, along with patient caregivers.
Dr. Paulraj has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, including Clinical Gerontologist, Journal of Neurolinguistics, and Frontiers in Psychology. She has also presented to peers at regional, national, and international meetings, including annual meetings of the American Psychological Association (APA), National Academy for Neuropsychology, and American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology (AACN). -
Juan N. Pava

BioJuan N. Pava is a Research Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), where his work focuses on AI governance, digital inclusion, and the political economy of emerging technologies, particularly in the Global South. His research examines how institutions can more equitably govern technological development, with current projects spanning low-resource languages, language digitization, AI sovereignty, and accessibility.
At Stanford HAI, Juan has contributed to research and institutional initiatives at the intersection of technology and social impact, including educational programming for civil society leaders and collaborative projects on inclusive AI development. He is also a Research Assistant at Stanford’s Human Trafficking Data Lab, where he co-authors research on legal and statistical frameworks surrounding labor exploitation and human trafficking.
Juan holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Economics from New York University and will begin the Master’s in International Policy program at Stanford University in 2026. Born and raised in Colombia, his broader interests lie in political economy, international development, and the application of normative political theory to institutional design and governance. -
