Mark McGurl
Albert Guérard Professor of Literature
BioMark McGurl's scholarly work centers on the relation of literature to social, educational and other institutions from the late 19th century to the present. He is the author of The Program Era: Postwar Fiction and the Rise of Creative Writing (Harvard), which was the recipient of the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism for 2011. His most recent book, Everything and Less: Fiction in the Age of Amazon (Verso 2021), was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for criticism.
McGurl’s first book was The Novel Art: Elevations of American Fiction after Henry James (Princeton). He has also published articles in journals such as Critical Inquiry, Representations, American Literary History, and New Literary History. He teaches a range of classes on American literature and related topics.
McGurl received his BA from Harvard, then worked at the New York Times and the New York Review of Books before earning his PhD in comparative literature from Johns Hopkins. He has held fellowships from Office of the President of the University of California and the Stanford Humanities Center. -
Steven Lee Mcintire

BioDr. McIntire earned his MD from Harvard Medical School and his PhD in Neuroscience from Harvard University, where he was awarded a Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship and Carl Walter Fellowship. He then completed Neurology residency training at UCSF. He is board certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has been named a Robert Ebert Clinical Scholar and Culpepper Medical Science Scholar. Dr. McIntire has published extensively in the fields of molecular neurobiology and neurogenetics.
Dr. McIntire’s interests are in general/comprehensive neurology. He is also interested in medical education and the training of medical students and neurology residents. -

He is best known for his work on metal oxide/semiconductor interfaces, ultrathin dielectrics, defects in complex metal oxide thin films, and nanostructured Si-Ge single crystals. His research team synthesizes materials, characterizes their structures and compositions with a variety of advanced microscopies and spectroscopies, studies the passivation of their interfaces, and measures functional properties of devices.

Staff, Neurosurgery OperationsBioDr. Stephen McKenna is a founding member of the Stanford Partnership for Spinal Cord Injury and Repair. He is currently the Chief of the Rehabilitation Trauma Center; as well as, the site director of the Advanced SCI Medicine Fellowship at SCVMC.
As a Neurocritical Care physician, Dr. McKenna specializes in ventilator-dependent Spinal Cord and Traumatic Brain Injury, as well as neuromuscular diseases. He has led first-in-human clinical trials ranging from vaccines for HIV to stem cell-derived oligodendrocyte progenitor cell-based therapies for SCI. Dr. McKenna is Chairman of the Respiratory Section of the International Standards to Document Autonomic Function after SCI (ISAFSCI) and co-chair of the American Spinal Cord Injury Association (ASIA) Research Education Subcommittee.

Safyer McKenzie-Sampson

BioSafyer McKenzie-Sampson is an IDEAL Provostial Fellow and instructor within the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University. Dr. McKenzie-Sampson is a social and perinatal epidemiologist, focused on researching the multi-level impacts of exposure to racism across the life course on the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes in Black communities, with the goal of translating findings into interventions to increase birth justice. Her research portfolio uniquely interrogates the rates of adverse perinatal outcomes through the lens of maternal nativity in the United States which allows for focus on the experiences of Black immigrants. She is currently the principal investigator of the AZANIA study, a mixed methods pilot study which collects data on the pregnancy and childbirth experiences of African immigrants in California. Dr. McKenzie-Sampson received her PhD in Epidemiology and Translational Science from the University of California San Francisco, and in addition to her research, she supports families in the Bay Area as a full-spectrum community doula.

Beverley J McKeon

BioBeverley McKeon is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. Previously she was the Theodore von Karman Professor of Aeronautics at the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories at Caltech (GALCIT) and a former Deputy Chair of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science. She received M.A. and M.Eng. degrees from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University. Her research interests include interdisciplinary approaches to manipulation of boundary layer flows using morphing surfaces, fundamental experimental investigations of wall turbulence at high Reynolds number, the development of resolvent analysis for modeling turbulent flows, and assimilation of experimental data for efficient low-order flow modeling. McKeon was the recipient of a Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship from the DoD in 2017, a Presidential Early Career Award (PECASE) in 2009 and an NSF CAREER Award in 2008, and is a Fellow of the APS and AIAA. She currently serves as co-Lead Editor of Phys. Rev. Fluids and on the editorial board of the Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics, and is past Editor-in-Chief of Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science. She is the Past Chair of the US National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and the APS representative.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research is focused on developing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods that probe brain tissue microstructure. This requires new MRI contrast mechanisms, strategic encoding and reconstruction schemes, physiological monitoring, brain tissue modeling and validation. Applications of these methods include neuronavigation, neurosurgical planning and the development of improved biomarkers for brain development, degeneration, disease and injury.

She earned her Ph.D. in African Diaspora Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, her M.A. in Afro-American Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles, and her B.S. in Africana Studies from North Carolina State University. Her areas of specialty include twentieth century and twenty-first century African American history, clothing and Black expressive culture, Black popular culture, and contemporary Black feminisms. BioDr. Erin McNeely is a board-certified internal medicine physician with Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population Health at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. McNeely specializes in disease prevention, diagnosis, and management, with a special focus on cardiovascular health, including high blood pressure and metabolic disease. She also has extensive experience in integrative medicine. Dr. McNeely believes in working with the whole person to develop individualized care plans and to meet patients’ unique health goals.
Dr. McNeely’s research interests include health equity and primary care-based value and quality improvement.

M Windy McNerney, PhD

Windy McNerney is the Director of Biological Sciences for the MIRECC at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Palo Alto, and a Clinical Associate Professor (Affiliated) at Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. McNerney holds a particular passion for not only understanding the neurophysiology and biochemistry of mental health diseases, but also advocating for these invisible diseases. Her research focuses on neurodegeneration, depression, TBI, PTSD, and addiction. She is collaborating with researchers to integrate brain imaging and biochemical markers in hopes to better understand these diseases. She also is taking a lead role at the VA in investigating the biochemistry of magnetic brain stimulation and is the leader of the NeuroNado Laboratory. At Stanford University, she is the professor of two popular courses examining the biological and societal issues surrounding substance use disorder, with a major focus on opioids such as fentanyl. She has individually mentored over 25 students from underrepresented groups in STEM activities and leads monthly seminars aimed at facilitating career development. In her free time, she is a community advocate for the treatment of mental health and educates groups about the dangers of fentanyl.
She earned her BS from UC Davis and her PhD from the University of Notre Dame. While at ND, she interned at NASA Ames on Human Factors Engineering. She then went on to a postdoctoral position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (DOE), and then completed a fellowship at the WRIISC program at the VA and Stanford University.

Alexandria McPherson

BioAlexandria (Xan) McPherson is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Psychology at Stanford University. Xan completed her PhD in Applied Physics at the University of Washington, I-LABS with Dr. Samu Taulu as her advisor. There, she developed improvements to the methodology and instrumentation for on-scalp MEG systems, such as OPM-MEG, with the goal of implementing reliable and robust methods for OPM data collection and processing. During her postdoc, she is continuing her work on OPM-MEG systems with Dr. Laura Gwilliams to further the study of speech comprehension.

BioAlison McQueen is the the Nehal and Jenny Fan Raj Civics Faculty Fellow in Undergraduate Teaching and an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University. Her research focuses on early modern political theory and the history of International Relations thought.
McQueen’s book, Political Realism in Apocalyptic Times (Cambridge University Press, 2018), traces the responses of three canonical political realists—Niccolò Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, and Hans Morgenthau—to hopes and fears about the end of the world. A second book project, Absolving God: Hobbes’s Scriptural Politics, tracks and explains changes in Thomas Hobbes’s strategies of Scriptural argument over time. She is also working on treason and betrayal in the history of political thought. -
