TZU HAN LO
Postdoctoral Scholar, Gastroenterology
BioTzu-Han Lo, a researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at Academia Sinica, has made contributions to the field of macrophage biology. His work has particularly focused on inflammation, especially in the context of fibrotic response. One of his works includes a study on the regulation of macrophage polarization in ureteral obstruction. This research has illuminated the role of inflammatory cell infiltration and activation during the early stages of kidney injury, a common pathological feature of chronic kidney disease.
In addition to his work on macrophage biology, Tzu-Han Lo has also delved into research related to galectins, a family of β-galactoside–binding proteins. His work in this area has centered on the role of galectins in recognizing microbial glycans, particularly lipopolysaccharides (LPSs). He has explored their impact on host defense mechanisms, including autophagy and both canonical and non-canonical inflammasome signaling pathways.
His research has offered insights into the complex interactions between host immunity and microbial components. This has contributed to our understanding of inflammatory responses and their implications for human health. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe laboratory is focused on the relationship between injury, wound healing, and cancer. Esophageal, gastric, and pancreatic cancers are a focus. We are particularly interested in the regulation of cell signaling by EGFR, the EGF receptor. In addition to cancer pathogenesis, active projects include the development of new diagnostic assays and drugs.

Specifically, those related to nausea and vomiting with or without gastroparesis, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic abdominal pain. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe conduct clinical trials and epidemiological, translational, and real-world studies of liver cancer, fatty liver (NASH, NAFLD), viral hepatitis B and C, liver cirrhosis, and liver transplant. We focus on risk identification for disease prevention and treatment for improvement of survival. We focus on sex, racial/ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities. We specialize in clinical trials, large international real-world consortium registry data, and large public/semi-public databases.

Minh Dai Nguyen

BioDr. Minh Nguyen joined the Prof. Jeffrey Glenn laboratory as a postdoctoral scholar in August 2022. His aspiration is to merge chemistry and biology to drive advancements in drug discovery by emphasizing molecular, structural, and chemical approaches. Minh currently focuses on the development of novel antiviral drugs against SARS-CoV-2 and other RNA viruses of pandemic potential. Minh earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania under the direction of Prof. Amos B. Smith, III, where his doctoral work centered on the convergent total synthesis of two marine natural products nahuoic acids Cii and Dii.

Laura A. Pace
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology
BioI am a physician-scientist specializing in neuroimmunogastroenterology with a focus on the diagnosis and care of people suffering from complex multisystem disorders involving the neuroimmune axis. Neuroimmune axis disorders are conditions at the interface of the nervous and immune systems and often involve autonomic nervous system dysregulation, extracellular matrix|connective tissue dysregulation, endocrine dysregulation, and metabolic dysregulation. These conditions disproportionately and more severely impact females and often have an onset after an immune activating event such as an infection, surgery, concussion, or physical trauma. The complex, multisystem nature of these conditions requires the integration of information from multiple domains to diagnose and identify personalized therapeutic interventions. While at the University of Utah, I was part of the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases Network from 2017-2024, an experience that furthered my resolve to develop a precision medicine program focused on neuroimmune axis disorders. I am an ardent patient advocate and serve on the boards of several patient advocacy groups.
I am board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology through the American Board of Internal Medicine, and Autonomic Disorders through the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. Additionally, I have formalized clinical training in Neurogastroenterology and Medical Genetics, and a PhD in Neuroscience. I am a former NIH Building Interdisciplinary Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) Scholar. To date I have published over 120 peer reviewed scientific articles and have received research funding from the NIH and private foundations.
My research has spanned the study of mammalian cell signaling; the physiology, ecology, and evolution of microbial metabolism; and human-microbe interactions leveraging multiomics. Through several collaborative multidisciplinary research projects her current work is focused on decoding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neuroimmune axis disorders. Some of these exciting projects include the application of next-generation environmental microbiology techniques to understand the complex human-microbiota interactions at mucosal interfaces; identifying genetic and environmental contributions to neuroimmune axis disorders; and the development and application of novel therapeutics to treat these disabling disorders. -
Jennifer Yi-Jiun Pan

Staff, Medicine - Med/Gastroenterology and HepatologyBioMy research interests thus far have focused on immunology, GI cancers, and improving quality of care for patients. I am passionate about understanding the different genetic and lifestyle factors that are involved in GI cancers and other colonic pathology, as well as improving systems of care to better manage the health and improve the outcomes of patients with these diseases. Towards that end, I have been involved in research in Lynch syndrome in order to bridge the gap between our current understanding of cancer risk in this high-risk population and the creation and implementation of guidelines worldwide. I also had the opportunity to work with collaborators in the International Mismatch Repair Consortium at the Department of Colorectal Medicine and Genetics with the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia where I saw firsthand the global efforts in the fight against colorectal cancer. In my current role as a staff gastroenterologist at the VA Palo Alto, I oversee the colorectal cancer prevention program. My goal is to continue to be part of and contribute to collaborative clinical and research efforts in order to provide the best care for our patients.

KT Park MD MS
Adjunct Professor, Medicine - Med/Gastroenterology and Hepatology
BioPrior to joining Genentech in 2018, Dr. Park was Associate Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, Co-Director of the IBD Center at Stanford Children’s Health, and an expert in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Currently, he is the Global Head of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Metabolism in Product Development at Genentech and Roche. Trained as a health economist, during his tenure in academia, Dr Park held research grants and funding support focused on the cost-effectiveness of biologic treatment strategies and novel non-invasive biomarkers for children and adults with IBD. He led national research registries at the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation and scientific/clinical committees in numerous GI societies and physicians’ organizations. He received his BA in chemistry/biochemistry at Duke University, MD at University of Tennessee, and MSc in Health Economics/Policy at Stanford where he completed his clinical and postdoctoral trainings. He is Adjunct Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Stanford University. At Genentech Roche, Dr. Park directs a team of clinical scientists and medical directors overseeing clinical phase drug development in gastroenterology, hepatology, and metabolism.

BioMy interest in medicine and research was triggered by my mother’s battle with chronic hepatitis C, which made me realize the transformational power of biomedical research in treating patients. Therefore, my career goal is to become a physician scientist in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology dedicated to translating discoveries in the laboratory into novel medical treatment modalities. My research focus is alterations in phosphoinositides signaling and its pathogenesis in cancers of the hepatobiliary and luminal GI tract with the goal to identify novel targets for therapeutic intervention. I also have a particular interest in understanding the interface between chronic viral infection and cancer through studying how the innate and adaptive immune system are perturbed in chronic viral infections

Peter Poullos

Clinical Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & HepatologyBioDr. Poullos is a native of Stockton California. He earned his B.S. at Santa Clara University and M.D. degree at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, after which he did an Internal Medicine residency at the University of California-San Francisco, finishing in 2002. He stayed at UCSF as a Gastroenterology fellow until 2004. However, after a spinal cord injury, he decided to retrain in Radiology. He did his Radiology residency at Stanford University, where he also completed a fellowship In Body Imaging in 2009. Dr. Poullos is now faculty in both the departments of Radiology and Gastroenterology and Hepatology. His clinical practice is at the Stanford Medicine, where he specializes in CT, MRI, and ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis. His interests include radiology of the acute abdomen, hepatobiliary imaging, and colorectal cancer screening.
Dr. Poullos is the Founder and Co-Chair of the Stanford Medicine Alliance for Disability Inclusion and Equity (SMADIE), a group composed of people with disabilities and their allies at Stanford Medicine. In that role, Dr. Poullos advocates for students and healthcare providers with disabilities and for health equity for disabled patients. He is a Faculty Advisor to the Stanford Medical Students with Disability and Chronic Illness (MSDCI) and the MSDCI National organizations. Dr. Poullos and SMADIE have made significant contributions to the disability community, including starting the Stanford Conference on Disability in Healthcare and Medicine, drawing over 1000 participants from 39 countries. He is the Co-Host of the popular “DocsWithDisabilities” podcast, has spoken internationally about disability access in medicine, and has written and researched in the field. One of his proudest achievements is co-creating the Disability in Medicine Mutual Mentorship Program, serving the needs of disabled medicine and healthcare students and practitioners. In 2022, Dr. Poullos received the Stanford President’s Award for Excellence through Diversity. -

Arghavan Salles
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology
BioDr. Salles is a minimally invasive and bariatric surgeon. She completed medical school and residency in general surgery at Stanford prior to completing her fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at Washington University in St. Louis. She stayed on faculty at Washington University for three years prior to moving back to Stanford in 2019.During the pandemic, Dr. Salles has served as a disaster relief physician, caring for patients with COVID in the ICU. Dr. Salles obtained a PhD in education from Stanford University during her residency training, and her research focuses on gender equity, implicit bias, diversity, inclusion, and physician well-being. Her R01 grant from the NIH focuses on sexual harassment. She is a sought-after speaker and has given over 100 national and international invited talks related to gender equity, physician well-being, and weight bias. She currently serves as the Special Advisor for DEI Programs at the Stanford University Department of Medicine where she is a Clinical Associate Professor.

Atulkumar T. Shah, MD

BioDr. Shah is a board-certified, fellowship-trained gastroenterologist with Stanford Health Care’s Digestive Health program. He is a clinical associate professor of medicine in the division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Shah treats all gastrointestinal and liver conditions, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), colon polyps, hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. He has a special interest in the increasingly prevalent fatty liver disease, which allows him to work closely with patients to educate them about symptom management and making lifestyle changes that will improve their health and wellbeing.

Dr. Shah is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and American Association for the Study of Liver Disease.
Among Dr. Shah’s current research interests is the development of an algorithm assessing the impact of gastrointestinal disease management on readmission rates.
Dr. Shah brings a personalized approach to working with patients and to teaching the next generation of physician scientists the classic skills of careful listening and patient examination. Throughout his career, he has emphasized the fundamental importance of balancing scientific expertise with empathy and compassion.
As a volunteer with the non-profit organization Health Volunteers Overseas, Dr. Shah travels around the world to train physicians about liver disease management and treatment. He is director of the HVO site in Bangalore, India. -
Edward Sheen

BioDr. Edward Sheen is Chief Quality and Population Health Executive for L.A. Care. Serving more than 2.9 million members, L.A. Care is the largest publicly operated health plan in the country. As a public entity, its mission is to provide access to quality care for vulnerable and low-income communities and to elevate the safety net. Previously, he was Chief Population Health Officer, Senior Vice President for Health Catalyst and Chief Medical Officer, Market Development and Solution Design for Lumeris, a leading value-based care technology and services operator as well as 5.0 Star Medicare Advantage plan. He has worked with health systems and payers across the country to improve health outcomes, enhance patient experience, strengthen care provider engagement, reduce costs of care, and accelerate their journey towards accountable care. He is dedicated to achieving accessible, equitable, person-centered, and high-performing care for all.
Dr. Sheen’s experience has bridged the public, private, non-profit, and academic sectors and additionally includes work with Stanford University, the White House, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, California State Assembly, Kaiser Family Foundation, Blue Shield, California and American Medical Associations, and Genzyme. In 2014, he was one of 15 Americans appointed by President Obama a nonpartisan White House Fellow. He subsequently served as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense and Defense Department senior health policy advisor and was a recipient of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service. Dr. Sheen was a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He currently serves on the National Advisory Council on the National Health Service Corps, which advises the Secretary of Health and Human Services. He is Adjunct Professor of Medicine and Global Health Faculty Fellow at Stanford. He has a long-standing active commitment to mentoring, teaching, and medical education.
Dr. Sheen completed his Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology training at Stanford, received his MD from the University of California, San Francisco, and earned his MBA and MPH through scholarships from Stanford Graduate School of Business and Harvard School of Public Health, where he was also a Harvard Kennedy School Center for Public Leadership Zuckerman Fellow. He graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a B.A. in Public Policy and induction into Phi Beta Kappa. -

As a result of both my personal experiences and training, I am passionate about ensuring that patients receive appropriate diagnostic testing and treatment options in order to improve people's quality of life. In collaboration with my amazing colleagues, I am confident in the high quality and easily accessible care we are able to provide to patients across northern California.
While my interest is most in inflammatory bowel disease, I am also interested in the interaction between mental health, incentives, and emerging therapies in gastroenterology. -
Sidhartha Sinha

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThere are two primary and overlapping emphases of my research, both of which are driven and united by needs-based innovation and translational potential:
(1) Understanding the microenvironment of the inflamed versus normal gut in order to identify better therapeutic targets for people with immune-¬mediated GI disorders. Here, our investigations include understanding the influence and interactions of pharmacologic and dietary interventions on gut microbiome/metabolomic changes and the host immune response. In the context of providing patients with new understanding and solutions for their disease, I have led and advised on the design of both pilot and large clinical trials (including new FDA approved therapies) for anti-inflammatory therapies;
(2) Applying novel approaches and technologies (including natural language processing, computer vision, and reinforcement learning) to identify and address unmet clinical needs. In this area we have ongoing and published efforts in my lab to validate and develop solutions to pressing clinical needs. We have developed/led new drug delivery technologies with a multidisciplinary team that have shown strong potential in ongoing human IBD clinical trials. My lab has utilized both supervised and unsupervised approaches to analyze social media discourse and unstructured data sets for identifying patient needs that are rarely addressed in clinical settings. We have gained insights into patient perceptions around preventative health interventions, such as health screening and diet, including the dearth of evidence-based dietary recommendations to treat IBD (despite strong patient desire for solutions in this domain). -

BioI am passionate about gut health and strive to provide the best care to my patients. I specialize in complex motility disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. My areas of clinical expertise include achalasia, dysphagia, eosinophilic esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastroparesis, functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, and pelvic floor dysfunction. I also see patients in need of fecal microbiota transplant for recurrent C. difficile infection.

BioSean Spencer, MD,PhD is a Gastroenterologist and Physician Scientist at Stanford University working with Justin Sonennburg,PhD to uncover the role of dietary intake on the gut microbiome and mucosal immune system. Sean obtained his medical degree University of Pennsylvania, earning his PhD studying nutritional immunology with Yasmine Belkaid,PhD at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), after which he moved to Boston for residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital and completed his Gastroenterology training at Stanford University. Sean’s career goal is to study mechanisms by which dietary intake influences our microbiome and immune system to better understand and treat gastrointestinal disease.

Sarah Streett
Clinical Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology
BioDr. Sarah Streett is a Clinical Professor of Medicine, the Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Education at Stanford, and she is passionate about taking care of people with IBD. She is a national expert in treating complex IBD and initiated a multi-disciplinary approach to care with colorectal surgery, pediatrics, and nutrition. In 2018 she received the Champion of Hope Award from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and serves on their National Scientific Advisory Committee. Her interests focus on fertility and pregnancy in people with IBD, developing precision approaches to IBD therapy, and the role that the microbiome and diet play in its pathogenesis. She is a primary investigator of the Stanford IBD Registry and has research projects focused on optimizing clinical outcomes in IBD, the role of the microbiota and diet in IBD and pregnancy, and applying new technologies to individualizing therapy for IBD. She is also the primary investigator on multiple industry-sponsored IBD trials.
Teaching is a top priority for Dr. Streett who feels that mentoring fellows in the development of their careers is a privilege. She has held many national leadership roles in the American Gastroenterological Association, where she has been Chair of the Practice Management and Economics Committee, and currently serves on the Government Affairs Committee. She also an appointed member of the Gastrointestinal Drug Advisory Committee at the FDA. She has represented the interests of gastroenterologists and their patients on Capitol Hill numerous times. Dr. Streett believes strongly in a collaborative approach to give patients personalized care based on the latest therapies for the treatment of IBD and is committed to mentoring the next generation of experts in the field. -
Natalie Torok

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab is focused on exploring the role of matrix remodeling in disease progression in metabolic dysfunction steatohepatitis (MASH)-related hepatocellular carcinoma and primary sclerosing cholangitis. Our goal is to uncover how biomechanical characteristics of the ECM affect mechano-sensation, and how these pathways could ultimately be targeted. We are also interested in aging and its effects on metabolic pathways in MASH and HCC.

Mike Tzuhen Wei
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology
BioDr. Wei was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan. He went to Stanford for his undergraduate studies in Biology and earned his medical degree at Weill Cornell Medical College. Unable to stay far from the Bay Area, he returned to Stanford where he completed his residency in internal medicine and subsequently his fellowship in gastroenterology. Dr. Wei has specific interests in colorectal cancer and Barrett’s esophagus surveillance as well as reflux diagnosis and management. He has an interest in endoscopic resection of large polyps and had received training under Dr. Shai Friedland, a world expert in this field. Dr. Wei work focuses on evaluating new tools, technologies and techniques in gastrointestinal cancer surveillance and management. He has been involved in running several trials in endoscopic management of polyps and evaluating artificial intelligence applications in gastroenterology. His work has been published in American Journal of Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Clinical Endoscopy, VideoGIE, and Digestive Diseases and Sciences. He was formerly an Associate Editor for the ACG Case Report Journal (2020-2022) and was on the Board of the Northern California Society of Clinical Gastroenterology. When not in clinic or in endoscopy, Dr. Wei enjoys spending time with his family. He and his family enjoy traveling and exploring new restaurants.
