Virginia A. Marchman

Staff, PsychologyBioAs a developmental psychologist, my main areas of research are language development, language disorders, and early childhood development. I have worked extensively with parent report measures of early vocabulary, specifically, the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs). I serve on the CDI Advisory Board, and have worked on many projects including the Web-CDI, the CDI Scoring program, and Wordbank, an open repository of CDI instruments from many different languages. My current studies examine links between children's language processing skill, early learning environments, and individual differences in language development in monolingual and bilingual learners from diverse backgrounds. Our team also explores the importance of environmental stimulation in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), showing that early engagement in developmental care activities (e.g., skin-to-skin care, holding, talking) has important consequences for positive neurological and behavioral outcomes. I am also involved in a large-scale NIH-funded project following infants born preterm from birth to 18 months, examining the neurodevelopmental and environmental influences on development in this at risk population. In addition to conducting studies that have a basic science focus, I have also been Director of Program Evaluation for the Habla Conmigo project, overseeing the evaluation of parenting intervention programs designed to facilitate caregiver engagement in Latina mothers and their young children.

Felicia Marcus

BioFelicia Marcus has a long career as an organizational manager, a federal, state, and local government policymaker, and as a non-profit leader. She is currently the Landreth Visiting Fellow at Stanford University’s Water in the West Program and is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and the American College of Environmental Lawyers. Felicia was most recently Chair of the California State Water Resources Control Board after having served as Regional Administrator of the U.S. EPA Region IX and as head of the City of Los Angeles’ Department of Public Works in addition to senior leadership in national non-governmental organizations (Trust for Public Land, Natural Resources Defense Council). She has experience as a private and public interest sector attorney and has worked on issues across the West spanning water supply, water rights, and water quality in addition to experience in other sectors like energy, toxics, and land use. She is also a member of the Water Policy Group, an international network of former and current high-level water official policymakers and is also one of the three US members of the Joint Public Advisory Committee of the North American Commission on Environmental Cooperation in addition to serving on many boards and advisory committees. She also currently serves as a Board Member for the Western Electricity Coordinating Council, which supports the reliability of the bulk electricity transmission grid for the western United States and parts of Canada and Mexico. Felicia graduated cum laude from Harvard College (East Asian Studies), has her JD from New York University School of Law, and attended Hong Kong University (Rotary Fellowship).

Mariya Mardamshina

BioMariya Mardamshina, MD, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Bioengineering, working in Prof. Emma Lundberg's lab. She earned her medical degree from Semey State Medical University and completed her PhD at Tel Aviv University, where her research focused on spatial inter- and intratumoral heterogeneity in breast cancer using mass spectrometry-based proteomics. Currently, her work in the Lundberg lab centers on deciphering cell-to-cell proteomic variability within a spatial framework. Her research involves developing integrated pipelines that combine automated multiplexed staining, high-resolution microscopy, artificial intelligence, and ultra-high sensitivity mass spectrometry to achieve comprehensive proteomic analyses.

Peter Margolis, MD, PhD

BioPeter Margolis, MD, PhD, is Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine, Emeritus Professor (pending) of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, and former Co-Director of the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. His work encompasses the application and study of systems improvement methods across a broad range of areas, including primary and sub-specialty care, communities, and public health settings to improve the health outcomes of children, families, and communities. Over the last 20 years, he and his research team have developed innovative approaches that engage patients, their families, clinicians, scientists, and communities in developing network-based learning health systems that simultaneously improve care, spawn innovation, and accelerate research. This work has repeatedly demonstrated significant impact on the process and outcomes of care. Dr. Margolis has extensive experience in large-scale comparative effectiveness research, the creation of large-scale interoperable data systems, managing large project teams, and engaging individuals from diverse backgrounds to co-produce improved care and research. He served as Chair of the PCORnet Council, guiding the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute’s investment in transforming research infrastructure in the US. The ImproveCareNow Network, which he leads, was awarded the Drucker Prize, the largest non-profit management and innovation award in the US. Dr. Margolis is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.

I am particularly interested in using regional anesthesiology, the science and practice of modulating nerve transmission in the central neuraxis or within peripheral nerves, to produce target-specific and opioid-sparing pain relief and enhance recovery after surgery or injury.

Ivana Maric
Assistant Professor (Research) of Pediatrics (Neonatology)
BioIvana Maric is an Assistant Professor in the Pediatrics Department at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Her research focuses on applying machine learning to improving maternal and neonatal health. Her main focus has been on developing machine learning models for early prediction of adverse outcomes of pregnancy from omics and electronic health records data, that could guide development of low-cost, point of care diagnostic tools. Her main interest is in solutions that are applicable worldwide and especially in low-resource settings. Previously, her research focused on information theory, a mathematical discipline tightly related to statistics and machine learning. She is a recipient of the 2021 Rosenkranz Prize awarded for innovative work to improve health in low- or middle-income countries. She is also a co-recipient of the 2013 IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper Award.
She received BS degree from the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, MS and PhD at Rutgers University and postdoctoral training at Stanford University. She served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Communications Letters from 2009 to 2012 and for the Trans. on Emerging Telecommunications Technologies from 2016 to 2018. -

Agostino Marinelli

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy main research interests are the physics and applications of x-ray free-electron lasers. I lead the free-electron laser R&D program at the Linac Coherent Light Source at SLAC, where I employ new accelerator and FEL physics concepts to advance ultrafast X-ray science. Some highlights of my research are the development of attosecond x-ray free-electron lasers, and the use of advanced plasma accelerators for the generation of ultrafast radiation pulses.

John D. Mark
Clinical Professor, Pediatrics - Pulmonary Medicine
BioDr. Mark received his medical degree from the University of Kansas and completed his residency in pediatrics at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric pulmonary medicine at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York. In 1984, Dr. Mark completed the first fellowship in Pediatric Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona om 2001. He practices at Packard Children’s Hospital where he utilizes non-pharmaceutical approaches with patients with chronic pulmonary disorders such asthma and cystic fibrosis. He is interested in nutrition, lifestyle changes, exercise and mind/body approaches to healing in an effort to decrease dependence on medication and improve overall lung health.
Dr. Mark is the past Program Director for the Pediatric Pulmonary fellowship program, Co-Director for the Pediatric Integrative Medicine fellowship program and the Medical Director for the Coordinating and Optimizing Resources Effectively (CORE) Program at Packard Children’s Hospital, Stanford University. This innovative program assists with care coordination and communication with all health care providers for children with complex medical needs. Dr. Mark is also the Chair of the Credentials Committee at Packard Children's Hospital. -
Thomas E. Markland

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research centers on problems at the interface of quantum and statistical mechanics. Particular themes that occur frequently in our research are hydrogen bonding, the interplay between structure and dynamics, systems with multiple time and length-scales and quantum mechanical effects. The applications of our methods are diverse, ranging from chemistry to biology to geology and materials science. Particular current interests include proton and electron transfer in fuel cells and enzymatic systems, atmospheric isotope separation and the control of catalytic chemical reactivity using electric fields.
Treatment of these problems requires a range of analytic techniques as well as molecular mechanics and ab initio simulations. We are particularly interested in developing and applying methods based on the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics to include quantum fluctuations such as zero-point energy and tunneling in the dynamics of liquids and glasses. This formalism, in which a quantum mechanical particle is mapped onto a classical "ring polymer," provides an accurate and physically insightful way to calculate reaction rates, diffusion coefficients and spectra in systems containing light atoms. Our work has already provided intriguing insights in systems ranging from diffusion controlled reactions in liquids to the quantum liquid-glass transition as well as introducing methods to perform path integral calculations at near classical computational cost, expanding our ability to treat large-scale condensed phase systems. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Maron is the Co-Chair and Principal Investigator of the ISCHEMIA trial, and Co-Chair of the ISCHEMIA-CKD trial. These large, international, NIH-funded studies will determine whether an initial invasive strategy of cardiac catheterization and revascularization plus optimal medical therapy will reduce cardiovascular events in patients with and without chronic kidney disease and at least moderate ischemia compared to an initial conservative strategy of optimal medical therapy alone.

Carol Marquez, MD
Clinical Professor, Radiation Oncology - Radiation Therapy
BioDr. Marquez is a radiation oncologist and the medical director of the Stanford Cancer Center in South Bay. She has board certification in therapeutic radiology and completed fellowship training in the use of radioimmunotherapy and radiosensitizers.
Dr. Marquez educates future specialists in her position as a clinical professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
In her clinical practice, she specializes in breast cancer, but treats a broad spectrum of cancers including prostate, lung, colon, lymphoma, and brain tumors. For each patient, she develops a comprehensive, compassionate care plan customized to individual needs. Her goal is to deliver the most effective cancer treatment to help patients enjoy the best possible health and quality of life.
Dr. Marquez has conducted research and published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals: Clinical Cancer Research, Annals of Surgical Oncology, the Journal of Women’s Health, and others. Topics include innovations in surgical decision-making, advanced treatment of prostate cancer, and the effectiveness of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in treating larger brain tumors.
She also wrote the chapter on pediatric radiation therapy for the Textbook of Clinical Pediatrics.
She has made presentations to her peers at the annual meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology (ASTRO) and at the annual Radiation Oncology Conference. Topics include radiation therapy after a mastectomy and advanced management of cancer of the central nervous system
She received a grant to examine the recruitment and retention of minority patients in cancer research. The National Cancer Institute sponsored the study.
Dr. Marquez is a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology, American College of Radiology (ACR), and Society for Neurologic Oncology (SNO). She is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology (FACR).
She participates on multiple committees in the Stanford School of Medicine Clinical Educator Program. She also serves as a radiation oncology expert on the Global Online Breast Tumor Board. This board is sponsored by Massachusetts General Hospital and meets monthly to provide real-time expert opinions for breast cancer cases from cancer centers across the world, including Brazil, Poland, and the Philippines. -

Riccardo Marrocchio

BioRiccardo Marrocchio received his BSc in Physics from the Sapienza University of Rome and his MSc in Physics from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. During his master, he had the opportunity to study and develop analytical and computational techniques to build mathematical models of complex biological systems, in particular of neuronal networks and the hearing system. He then joined the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research as a Ph.D. researcher at the University of Southampton. During his Ph.D., he worked on the development of a model of active cochlear micromechanics. After his PhD he continued at the University of Southampton joining the DigiTwin project as a Research Fellow, to work on the generalization of the biological feedback system of the cochlea to the design of control systems. To pursue his interests in hearing research, he joined Dr. Ó Maoiléidigh Lab, where he is working on stochastic fluctuations in hair bundles.
