BioMutallip Anwar completed his PhD in Language & Rhetoric at the University of Washington. Prior to joining PWR, he taught college writing courses at the University of Washington and Highline College. His primary teaching and research interests include rhetoric and composition studies, language education, discourse analysis, translation, and AI in education.

Kim Beil
ITALIC Associate Director
BioKim Beil is an art historian who specializes in the history of photography. Her book, Good Pictures: A History of Popular Photography, looks at 50 stylistic trends in the medium since the 19th century. Recently she’s written for the New York Times about tracking down an Ansel Adams photograph in the High Sierra with a team of astronomers. She’s also written about photography and climate change for The Atlantic, a survey of street views for Cabinet, and a history of screenshots for the Believer. She also writes frequently about modern and contemporary art for Artforum, Art in America, BOMB, Photograph, and Sculpture magazines.

Tony Boutelle
COLLEGE Lecturer
BioTony Boutelle teaches in the Civic, Liberal, and Global Education (COLLEGE) program. He earned a B.S. in Biology with a second major in Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During his time at Chapel Hill, he conducted undergraduate research in the Alisa Wolberg Lab, studying the biochemistry of blood clotting and completing an honors thesis entitled "Investigating the binding interaction between human factor XIII and fibrinogen". Motivated to continue conducting research to understand biological processes that impact human health, he went on to complete a Ph.D. in Cancer Biology at the Stanford School of Medicine, studying cancer genetics and cell biology in the Laura Attardi Lab. His dissertation, entitled "Understanding tumor suppression through the p53 target gene network", focused on illuminating the downstream effectors of the potent tumor suppressor, p53, and the molecular and cellular mechanisms important for tumor suppression.
Tony discovered his love for teaching as a supplemental instructor for "Principles of Biology" during his Junior and Senior years at UNC. At Stanford he served as a graduate teaching assistant for "Molecular and Genetic Basis of Cancer" and "Cancer Biology" and took on mentoring and outreach roles with various programs including REACH, GRIPS, PIPS, the Ashanti Project, EXPLORE, SIMR, Hermanxs in STEM, and Stanford SPLASH. Tony enjoys exploring the intersection of the natural sciences with other disciplines such as theology, philosophy, and literature. Through teaching, Tony hopes to create spaces that encourage students and instructors alike to gain the skills and confidence to create a meaningful life for themselves and to shape communities that promote sustainable flourishing.

Altair Brandon-Salmon
COLLEGE Lecturer
BioAltair Brandon-Salmon is a lecturer in the Civic, Liberal, and Global Education (COLLEGE) programme. He is an art historian writing a book on how bombsites shaped British art and architecture during the twentieth century. More broadly, he focuses on British and American art which is intertwined with violence, memory, and mortality.
His scholarship has been published by Art History, Art Journal, and the Oxford Art Journal, written exhibition catalogue essays for the Cantor Arts Center and the Museum Barberini, and given lectures at the Courtauld Institute of Art, the University of York, and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. His essays have appeared in America, Commonweal, Literary Review, and Public Seminar, while his fiction has been published by The Isis and the Oxford Review of Books. He is currently editing a volume for the Roxburghe Club on the eighteenth-century antiquarian, archaeologist, and Jacobite dissident James Byres.
Brandon-Salmon was the assistant curator at Campion Hall, University of Oxford, and the curatorial assistant at the Sheldonian Theatre.
He is represented by Orli Vogt-Vincent at David Higham Associates.

Caitlin Brust

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsCaitlin studies educational justice both philosophically and empirically, exploring what constitutes (un)just epistemic environments in U.S. higher education and how educators, students, and institutions themselves can resist various forms of epistemic injustice within these environments. Her interdisciplinary research draws from feminist and social epistemology, liberal and democratic education, and ethical and political theory; she also uses qualitative methods to explore how college students and educators identify as knowers and navigate relations of knowledge, identity, and power in the liberal arts seminar classroom. Alongside arguments about formal teaching and learning practices, she studies the essential role of academic mentorship in undergraduate and graduate student life.

My book project, which was chosen for the 2019 Penn State First Book Institute, argues that the bureaucratic and literary documents of interwar itinerancy–including passports, travel ephemera, and newspapers–shape expatriation as a distinct mode of national belonging.

Hannah Katherine D'Apice
COLLEGE Lecturer
BioHannah D'Apice is a Lecturer in the COLLEGE (Civic, Liberal, and Global Education) Program. She received her doctorate from the Stanford GSE in International/Comparative Education and the Sociology of Education. Her work examines the historical and transnational sociology of organizational structures, policies, and leadership in education, especially as they relate to issues of race/ethnicity and gender/sexuality.
Prior to her doctoral studies, Hannah worked as a research manager, managing randomized controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness of educational programs. In addition, she taught professionally for four years in Texas and Singapore.
In addition to her PhD, Hannah has a Master's in Sociology and Master's in International Education Policy Analysis from Stanford, as well as a Bachelor's in Political Science from Columbia University. -
Tara Dosumu Diener

BioTara received a Ph.D. in Anthropology and History from the University of Michigan in 2016 and a Graduate Certificate in Science, Technology, and Society in 2014. Prior to graduate studies at Michigan, she practiced as a Registered Nurse in obstetrics and pediatrics while earning an M.A. in Bioethics, Humanities, and Society from the Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences (CEHLS) at Michigan State University. She has taught courses in creative non-fiction writing, medical, biological, and sociocultural anthropology, international and African studies, global health, political science, and the history of medicine in the US, Western Europe, and sub-Saharan Africa. She is an anthropologist and historian of medicine, maternal and infant health and mortality, global health (non)systems, and nursing ethics and practice. She is proficient in both archival and ethnographic methods and her previous projects have focused on the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone.

Katherine Ding

BioKatherine Ding is a Lecturer for Structured Liberal Education. She received an MA in English Literature and Critical Theory from UC Irvine, and a PhD in English Literature from UC Berkeley. Prior to arriving at Stanford, she taught both critical and creative writing at Mount Tamalpais College (formerly the Prison University Project) in San Quentin, at Outer Coast College in Sikta, Alaska, and at UC Berkeley.
Braiding creative non-fiction with critical analysis, Katherine’s dissertation on the British Romantic poet William Blake explores what it means for knowledge to be fully embodied, and what the disembodiment of knowledge has cost us. Her current book project expands that inquiry—diving into fields as diverse as the neuroscience of interoception, exercise science, anthropology, and childhood development—to explore how the human organism observes, feels, and learns in relation to others in its embodied milieu.
In the classroom, Katherine is fascinated by the ever-shifting question of how we learn. Where do our ideas come from? What practices foster and facilitate good thinking? How might writing transform rather than simply express our thoughts and ideas? What is the relationship between reading, thinking, feeling, and writing? -

Jeffrey Dymond

BioI am an intellectual and legal historian. I aim in my research to understand the historical development of important social, political, and legal institutions and doctrines, such as sovereignty, the state, and international law. My current book project - called "Civilization and the Law of Nations" - re-constructs the assumptions about human nature and human sociability that animated the work of the early modern lawyers whose contributions gave initial shape to European ideas of international legal order. I especially wish to understand why these particular beliefs about human nature came to be regarded as universally applicable at a time of greater global and inter-cultural exchange. My PhD project focused on the reception of ancient Roman political and legal ideas and their role in shaping the modern state.
Before coming to Stanford, I was a postdoctoral fellow in the History Department at the University of Zürich, where I worked on a project tracing the reception of ancient Roman legal and political ideas across different points in European history. I earned my PhD in History in 2021 at the University of California, Los Angeles. -

Katie Fiocca

BioKatie received a PhD in Biology at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, researching social insect nutritional physiology and chemical ecology. Additionally she earned a graduate minor in Undergraduate STEM Education through the Drexel Center for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning Excellence.
She began her work at Stanford as an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Biology Department, working to better understand the relationship between poison frog prey selection and their toxic ant diet. During her position, she also worked to broaden the participation of diverse identities in science, focusing on partnering with the local Bay Area community, including both students and high school teachers.
Currently, she is a COLLEGE Lecturer in Civic, Liberal, and Global Education with Stanford Introductory Studies. -

Byron Gray

BioByron Gray is an anthropologist whose work centers on the intersection of politics, law, religion, and urban space in South Asia. His doctoral research examined the associational, legal, and ritual means that Catholics in Bombay, India have employed to advance spatial and property claims in the city since its transformation into “Mumbai” in the 1990s.
Prior to receiving his PhD, Byron earned a MPhil in Socio-Cultural Anthropology from the University of Oxford, and BA in Political Science, South Asian Studies, and Law, Societies, & Justice from the University of Washington. -

Mahel Hamroun

BioMahel Hamroun (she/her) is a historian of the European Middle Ages and a Lecturer in Civic, Liberal, and Global Education (COLLEGE). As a historian, she works at the intersection of legal history, religious studies, and history of emotions, with a particular interest in comparative cultures of guilt. She has written and taught on a wide range of topics, including law and legal community in the medieval North, histories of sin and penance, and European understandings of salvation and damnation with respect to various perceived 'others'. She recently completed her doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley, where her research explored the role of penance in the secular laws of medieval Iceland and Norway. Future projects, including her forthcoming first book, will continue to focus on themes of culpability and legal and religious entanglement, both within and beyond the borders of Europe.

Michaela Hulstyn

BioMichaela Hulstyn is the Associate Director of Structured Liberal Education (SLE), a first-year residential education program at Stanford University.
She is the author of Unselfing: Global French Literature at the Limits of Consciousness (University of Toronto Press, 2022.) Her research interests center on 20th- and 21st-century French and Francophone literature, phenomenology of the self and intersubjectivity, cognitive approaches to transcultural literature, and literature as ethical philosophy. Her work has appeared in MLN, Philosophy and Literature, and Contemporary French and Francophone Studies, among other places.
Michaela previously held academic appointments at Florida State University and Reed College. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsNora Kassner's current book project, Hard to Place: Homosexuality, Foster Care, and the Remaking of the American Family, places gay and lesbian foster parents at the heart of the transformation of American family policy in the late twentieth century. Between the 1970s and the 1990s, gay and lesbian foster parents won the right to care for 'homosexual' teens, then children with HIV-AIDS, and then laid the groundwork for the legalization of gay parenthood across the United States.

Joseph Kidney

BioJoseph Kidney is a Lecturer for Civic, Liberal, and Global Education (COLLEGE). He received a PhD in English Literature from Stanford University in 2024. An early modernist, his work looks at sixteenth-century literature, particularly drama, against the backdrop of the European and English Reformations. His dissertation examined the sometimes complementary, sometimes contradictory projects of Reformation and Renaissance as they drastically reshaped intellectual culture and gave rise to new forms of vernacular literature. In this project and elsewhere, he has a particular interest in classical reception, rhetorical theory, early modern humanism, Renaissance comedy, and the cultural transformations regarding attitudes to the dead.
His academic publications include work on the dramatists Nicholas Udall, William Shakespeare, and John Webster, drawing on early modern thought ranging from theology to proto-scientific treatises. Other work supplements these historicist approaches with twentieth- and twenty-first-century methodologies derived from queer theory, considerations of metatheatre, and genre theory. He has also published on pedagogy, articulating strategies for teaching old plays in modern classrooms. He has taught, as instructor of record, classes on Shakespeare and on Renaissance Literature, and served as a teaching assistant for literary surveys from Beowulf to Jane Austen, as well as for Poetry and Poetics. He has worked as an assistant editor for the Stanford Global Shakespeare Encyclopedia and as a Graduate Coordinator for Stanford's Renaissances working group.
Outside of academia, he has received numerous awards for poetry, including, most recently, the Grand Prize in Arc Poetry Magazine's Poem of the Year contest. His poems have appeared, among other places, in Best Canadian Poetry 2024 and been nominated for a National Magazine Award. A full length debut will appear in March 2025. -

Elias Kleinbock

BioElias Kleinbock is a Lecturer in the Program in Structured Liberal Education (SLE), a first-year residential humanities program at Stanford University.
His research brings modernist cultural production in the German, Soviet, and Anglophone spheres into conversation with the history of the human sciences and the intersecting traditions of Marxism, psychoanalysis, and Spinozism. He received his PhD in Comparative Literature from Princeton University, with a dissertation titled “Labors of Formation: Pedagogy and Collectivity in the Modernist Frame.” His current book project, based on his dissertation, traces out a transindividual, psychosocial conception of teaching and learning in works by 20th-century thinkers including Aleksandr Bogdanov, John Dewey, Bertolt Brecht, and Wilfred R. Bion. Elias's broader interests include poetry and poetics, experimental cinema, pre-Freudian histories of the unconscious, and aesthetic and theoretical treatments of impersonality and theatricality. He is also an amateur theater practitioner, with experience and training in clown, commedia, and Lecoq-style physical theater. -
Elaine Lai

BioElaine Lai is a Lecturer for Civic, Liberal, and Global Education (COLLEGE) who has spent over a decade of her life working and studying in Nepal, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan, and China, where she made many lifelong friends.
Elaine is a scholar of Buddhism, trained in the languages of Tibetan, Chinese, and Sanskrit. She specializes in a tradition known as the Great Perfection in Tibet. Elaine’s recent research explores the relationship between Buddhist literature and time, specifically, how form and content interplay to cultivate more compassionate temporal relationalities. Elaine is committed to making the study of Buddhism accessible to a wider audience through technology and the arts. As a part of her dissertation, she created an intertextual heatmap to trace the citational history of a scripture throughout an important corpus of Great Perfection literature. Elaine also created a virtual reality (VR) experience to present Great Perfection history in a novel way.
At Stanford, Elaine has co-taught different courses in Religious Studies and guest lectured in Asian American Studies. In 2022, Elaine is proud to have created and taught the course “Queering Buddhism: Gender, Sexuality, and Liberatory Praxis.” This course sought to investigate the possibilities and constraints to “queering” or transforming any institution, and how the fields of queer studies and feminist studies might constructively and ethically be in conversation with Buddhist theories of liberation. In her pedagogy, Elaine emphasizes the importance of reciprocity, respect, and co-creation. Elaine is a firm believer that the process of how we engage in dialogue is as important, if not more important, than what the ultimate outcome of our conversations might be.
In Elaine’s free time, she writes screenplays (film and TV), spanning the genres of comedy, sci-fi, animation, historical drama, and more. -

BioSangeeta Mediratta teaches classes on rhetoric and writing, literature and film. Her PWR classes currently focus on maps, borders, networks, objects, and objectification. She loves learning about and helping her students develop their research interests and projects and takes great joy in fostering strong class communities centered around writing and research.
She completed her Ph.D. from University of California, San Diego in English Literature. Her dissertation :Bazaars, Cannibals, and Sepoys: Sensationalism and Transnational Cultures of Empire" studied at the ways texts, objects, and spectacles in the U.S. and Britain drew upon imperial stories and objects to critique contemporary social formations. She has also written on world cinema, popular culture, disability studies, as well as gender and race studies.
Her current research focuses on the materiality of writing and on how students use culture as a way to build campus communities. She is also interested in empathy as a mode of living, connecting, writing, and being. -
Kevin C. Moore

BioKevin C. Moore is an Advanced Lecturer in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR), and the Coordinator of PWR's Notation in Science Communication. He holds a PhD in English from UCLA (2013). Prior to arriving at Stanford, he taught in the Writing Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara (2013-2019). His research interests include science and rhetoric, propaganda studies, Ralph Ellison, and writer's block. Dr. Moore's work has appeared in Arizona Quarterly, Arts, ContraSTS, Writing on the Edge, African American Review, Composition Studies, MAKE, Souciant, and the Santa Barbara Independent, as well as collections such as Trigger Warnings: Teaching through Trauma (Lever Press 2026), Ralph Ellison in Context (Cambridge University Press 2021), and Creative Ways of Knowing in Engineering (Springer 2017). He also writes fiction and creative nonfiction.
