    BioDr. Lewis is a board-certified, fellowship-trained specialist in cardiovascular medicine. He is the chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and a professor of cardiovascular medicine.

    Dr. Lewis is an esteemed clinician-scientist who specializes in the care of patients with advanced heart failure. He is an internationally recognized expert on heart failure, heart transplant, and quality of life for heart failure patients. He cares deeply about his patients as well as his colleagues, the hospital, and the School of Medicine. Dr. Lewis is committed to diversity and inclusion, as well as expanding Stanford clinical research initiatives.

    A fundamental principle of Dr. Lewis’ practice is his belief that “there is more to life than death,” that cardiovascular care should go beyond helping patients survive to also helping them enjoy the best possible quality of life.

    Dr. Lewis has deep expertise in conducting clinical trials examining diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to heart failure. He has done innovative work to create systems for incorporating quality of life measures for cardiovascular patients into electronic health records. This research has received support from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Institutes of Health.

    Much of his quality of life research has focused on patient-reported outcomes. Dr. Lewis emphasizes the importance of looking at how a disease, whether chronic or acute, impacts people’s ability to function and perform their activities of daily living. Strategies to improve patients’ well-being focus not only on their physical symptoms but also on depression, anxiety, exercise capacity, and ability to function in daily living.

    Dr. Lewis’ commitment to expanding clinical research initiatives will give patients more opportunities to participate in the clinical trials and access the latest care strategies that can translate into better outcomes. The goal is early access to the most advanced technology, pharmacology, and device therapy that can change outcomes for the better. He also envisions forming closer partnerships with community cardiologists and capitalizing further on Stanford’s proximity to and unique relationships with the digital technology leaders of Silicon Valley to enhance the use of digital technology for monitoring patients, optimizing treatment, and tracking outcomes.

    He has authored nearly 200 articles published in peer-reviewed journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, JAMA Cardiology, JAMA Internal Medicine, and many more. He is also on multiple editorial boards for cardiovascular journals and was an associate editor for Circulation–Heart Failure. In addition, he is an author of professional society clinical practice guidelines and scientific statements from both the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Food and Drug Administration.

    Dr. Lewis’ honors for clinical care, scholarship, and research include the Joel Gordon Miller Award for community service and leadership from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He also was one of the first recipients of the Minority Faculty Development Award, which recognizes the research potential of young physicians. Dr. Lewis has received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to study the role of quality of life assessment in clinical decision making in patients with heart failure.

    He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the National American Heart Association (AHA) Research Committee. In addition, Dr. Lewis was as a member of the AHA Founders Affiliate Board of Directors, chair of the Council on Clinical Cardiology, and research chair of the Association of Black Cardiologists. He also serves on scientific committees to review grants for the AHA and on the FDA Task Force for the Standardization of Definitions for Endpoint Events in Cardiovascular Trials.

    BioDr. Li is a board-certified, fellowship-trained gastroenterologist with Stanford Health Care. He is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    A therapeutic endoscopy specialist, Dr. Li received fellowship training in gastroenterology, advanced endoscopy, and endoscopic surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.

    Dr. Li specializes in advanced endoscopic procedures. His areas of expertise include endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), enteroscopy, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). He also specializes in esophageal peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (GPOEM), and Zenker’s diverticulum peroral endoscopic myotomy (ZPOEM).

    In addition, he treats gastrointestinal cancers, including gastric (stomach) cancer and colon cancer. He is dedicated to helping patients by integrating leading-edge research and innovations with compassionate, patient-centered clinical care.

    Dr. Li’s research interests include gastric cancer, innovations in advanced endoscopy and endoscopic surgery, and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and other computational techniques for prevention, diagnoses, and treatments.

    Dr. Li has published articles in the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and Endoscopy International Open. He has presented at national and international conferences held in Las Vegas; Washington, D.C.; and Seoul, Korea. In his many presentations, he has covered topics such as the prevention of gastric cancer and prevention of post-ERCP pancreatitis.

    Dr. Li is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, and American College of Physicians.

    BioI am a physician scientist in the Division of Cardiology at Stanford. My clinical interest is at the intersection of inflammation, autoimmunity and cardiovascular disease in a field called 'Cardio-Rheumatology'. Patients with rheumatologic diseases typically have an elevated cardiovascular disease risk profile along with an insidious onset. Moreover, with the ever-expanding biologic drug formulary for patients, it is important for us to characterize the cardiovascular effects of these medications. In my research, I believe that understanding how inflammatory and autoimmune mechanisms modify coronary artery disease can help us develop a novel perspective towards treating atherosclerosis beyond lipid lowering. My research goal is to advance novel therapeutics for atherosclerosis by leveraging my expertise in genetics, computational biology, and experience with diverse model organism perturbation models. My strategy employs a ‘systems’ approach, starting with human population variations at the genetic level and integrating findings across RNA, protein, and model organism studies. This comprehensive synthesis aims to grasp the overarching biological narrative, thereby facilitating the development of translational therapies that transform concepts from bench to bedside.

    BioRon Li is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine and Center for Biomedical Informatics Research at Stanford University School of Medicine. As the Medical Informatics Director for Digital Health at Stanford Health Care, he provides medical and informatics direction for the health system's enterprise digital health portfolio, including expanding digital referral networks and virtual care modalities. He is also the founding Medical Director for Stanford Health Care at Home and the co-founder and Director for the Stanford Emerging Applications Lab (SEAL), which helps clinicians and staff build ideas into novel digital products that are prototyped and tested for care delivery at Stanford Health Care.

    Ron's academic interests focus on the "delivery science" of new technological capabilities such as digital and artificial intelligence in healthcare and how to design, implement, and evaluate new tech enabled models of care delivery. Ron's work spans across multiple disciplines, including clinical medicine, data science, digital health, information technology, design thinking, process improvement, and implementation science. He has consulted for various companies in the digital health and artificial intelligence space. He is an attending physician on the inpatient medicine teaching service at Stanford Hospital and is the Associate Program Director for the Stanford Clinical Informatics Fellowship.

    BioApril S. Liang, M.D., is a Board-Certified internist and Clinical Informaticist. She serves as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Stanford Division of Hospital Medicine as well as Medical Informatics Director. Dr. Liang holds a B.S.E. in Computer Science from Princeton University and an M.D. from UCSF School of Medicine. She completed Internal Medicine residency at UCSF and Clinical Informatics fellowship at Stanford. Dr. Liang’s informatics interests include the implementation of AI tools in healthcare and data-driven quality improvement. Her past work includes the integrating a machine learning-driven clinical decision support tool in the EHR targeting lab overutilization and measuring the impact of ambient AI scribes on clinician documentation time.

    Douglass M. and Nola Leishman Professor of Cardiovascular Disease

    BioDr. Liao is a Professor of Medicine and co-Director of Stanford Cardiac Amyloid Center. The major goal of her research program focuses on understanding the mechanisms that underlie the pathophysiology of heart failure and developing novel treatments to combat this process. Her laboratory has played an international leading role in the study of amyloid light chain (AL) cardiomyopathy, a rare and fatal form of cardiovascular disease. We have described the underlying pathophysiologic basis for amyloid cardiomyopathy and found that the circulating amyloidogenic light chain proteins that characterize this disease directly result in a specific cardiotoxic response. Consequently, our research work has redefined AL cardiomyopathy and has raised new treatment approaches. More recently, her research efforts have expanded to include transthyretin (ATTR) cardiac amyloidosis.

    In line with her goal of revealing novel therapeutic strategies for patients with cardiovascular disease, our efforts have also focused on characterizing and harnessing endogenous cardiac regenerative mechanisms. Her laboratory initially demonstrated the therapeutic potential of exogenous primitive muscle cells delivered to the injured heart. This work was among the earliest milestones in the field and served as the basis for an international trial of cell-based therapy. Subsequently, Liao lab identified and characterized a population of cardiac progenitor cells and its relationship and dynamic activity following cardiac injury in the adult heart. Her laboratory aims to reveal the molecular mechanisms regulating the endogenous regenerative capacity of the heart and to harness such repair mechanisms for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Liao has lectured extensively on both amyloid cardiomyopathy and stem cell biology, and have maintained a history of independent NIH funding in these areas for more than two decades.

    Over the course of her academic career, she has taken the greatest pride in mentoring the next generation of scientists. Dr. Liao has had the privilege to supervise several dozen students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty, many of whom have gone on to independent academic careers at the highest institutions. Her contribution to the advancement of scientific knowledge also includes lecturing at various university and academic institutions as well as at scores of conferences and symposia locally, nationally, and internationally.

    BioDr. Lim is the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in brain tumors and trigeminal neuralgia.

    Dr. Lim’s clinical interests include the treatment of benign and malignant brain tumors, with special interest in gliomas, meningiomas, metastatic tumors, and skull base tumors. Dr. Lim also specializes in surgical treatments for trigeminal neuralgia. During his time at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Lim built one of the largest brain tumor and trigeminal neuralgia practices and utilized the most advanced surgical technologies and techniques for his patients. As a passionate voice for patient experience, he has been recognized by his peers and patients for his integrity and compassionate care, including a Service Excellence Award from HealthNetwork Foundation.

    As a mentor, he has garnered numerous teaching awards, including being honored as an outstanding teacher by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is actively involved in shaping education for neurosurgery and oncology across the United States and around the world. He is the recipient of the prestigious 2023 Abhijit Guha Award in Neuro-Oncology.

    Dr. Lim’s research interests focus on harnessing the immune system to fight cancer. His laboratory focuses on understanding mechanisms of immune evasion by cancer cells. He has successfully translated his findings from the laboratory to the clinics and has conducted and led several large national immunotherapy clinical trials for brain tumors.

    Dr. Lim’s bibliography contains well over 300 articles on topics such as immunotherapy for glioblastoma, long-term survival of glioma patients treated with stereotactic radiation, and treatment of neuropathic pain. His work has appeared in Science Translational Medicine, Clinical Cancer Research, Lancet Oncology, Nature Immunology, and many more publications. He also has written 20 book chapters and monographs.

    Dr. Lim is a world leader in immunotherapy for brain tumors. In addition to being invited world-wide to give lectures and seminars, he has given platform presentations on the topics of immunotherapy for brain tumors, neurosurgical techniques and management of brain tumors at the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, American Academy of Neurological Surgeons, Radiological Society of North America, Annual Symposium on Brain and Spine Metastases, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and other meetings. In addition, he has served as platform chairman of the CNS session at the American Society for Clinical Oncology conference.

    Dr. Lim is a member of the American Society for Clinical Oncology, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and Society for Neuro-Oncology. Dr. Lim served as the program co-chair of the Society for Neuro-Oncology and CNS section of the American Society for Clinical Oncology. He also served on many executive committees, including the Executive Committee for the Joint Tumor Section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

I served on the AGA Future Trends Committee tasked with reporting the future of gastroenterology training programs and have been admitted into the AGA Academy of Educators. I joined Stanford for the incredible opportunity to be part of a dynamic division with excellent and dedicated faculty where one can achieve their greatest potential. I share the honor and privilege of leading our fellowship program and in the joy of teaching such talented and inspiring fellows.     BioDr. Lin specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatologic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, myositis, gout, and seronegative spondyloarthropathies. She received additional training in autoimmune skin diseases and has a special clinical and research interest for psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis, dermatomyositis, cutaneous lupus/systemic lupus. She leads a combined rheumatology-dermatology clinic with Dr. Matthew Lewis in the dermatology department to take care patients collaboratively. Dr. Lin is a graduate of USSONAR (Ultrasound School of North American Rheumatologists) program and performs diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound evaluation and interventions. In addition to her clinical work, she leads the quality improvement effort for the division and her most recent projects are focused on patient-reported outcome in rheumatoid arthritis and vaccinations for patients in the rheumatology clinic.

    Brian Linde, MD

    Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health

    BioDr. Linde is a double board-certified, fellowship-trained internal medicine doctor with the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care & Population Health at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is board certified in both internal medicine and occupational and environmental medicine. He is fellowship trained in occupational and environmental medicine.

    Dr. Linde specializes in preventing, managing, and treating work-related injuries and diseases. He uses his expertise to improve the physical and mental wellness of his patients while reducing their exposure to occupational and environmental hazards. As a public health expert, Dr. Linde also focuses on enhancing the health of entire populations through strategies and policies that benefit communities as a whole.

    His academic interests include inhalational exposures and occupational lung diseases. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Linde studied how to increase adherence to infection prevention recommendations in clinical settings. He has also worked on guidance related to exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These chemicals, which are found in water, food, and fabrics, are an ongoing public health concern. Dr. Linde has also researched how to improve the mental and physical health of medical students and ways to prevent physician burnout.

    Dr. Linde has published in many peer-reviewed journals, including Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine and Academic Medicine. As a member of the Committee on the Guidance on PFAS Testing and Health Outcomes, Dr. Linde contributed to Guidance on PFAS Exposure, Testing, and Clinical Follow-Up, a publication of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He was also a reviewer for Archives of Environmental & Occupational Health and the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.

    He has written book chapters for Modern Occupational Diseases: Diagnosis, Epidemiology, Management and Prevention and Patty’s Industrial Hygiene. He wrote about preventing occupational and environmental pulmonary disorders for the Merck Manuals Professional Edition. Dr. Linde has been invited to speak at workshops and presentations all over the nation about a range of topics, including environmental health risks in underserved communities and the health effects of floods.

    Dr. Linde is a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He is also a member of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

    BioEleni Linos MD, MPH, DrPH, is the Director of the Stanford Center for Digital Health. Dr. Linos serves as Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Dermatology and Epidemiology at Stanford Medicine.

    Dr. Linos' research focuses on the use of technology in health, dermatology, public health, cancer prevention and the care of older adults. She is dually trained in epidemiology and dermatology and is the principal investigator of several NIH funded studies aimed at improving the lives of patients worldwide. She received her undergraduate degree from Trinity College, Cambridge and medical degree from Christ Church College, Oxford University in the UK. She then received a master’s and doctoral degree from the Harvard School of Public Health and completed her residency in Dermatology at Stanford University.

    Linos has been continuously funded by the NIH since 2016, as principal investigator of several studies on technology, aging and dermatology. Her scholarly output includes over 200 peer-reviewed publications, an h-index of 51, and more than 10,000 citations across disciplines. Linos was awarded the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award and received the Paul Beeson Emerging Leaders Award in Aging.

    As the Director of the Stanford Center for Digital Health, she has built and led infrastructure bringing together scientists and industry leaders across all Stanford schools to catalyze research across the fields of medicine, computer science, engineering, robotics, policy and public health.

    Dr. Linos is committed to mentorship and training of the next generation of scientists in translational research. She has personally mentored over 60 physician-scientists, many of whom are now independently-funded investigators and leaders in academic medicine. She also serves as the co-PI of Stanford CTSA’s K12 Program, responsible for mentorship and training of 10 translational science faculty each year. Over the last seven years, she is funded by an NIH K24 mentorship grant award to mentor the next generation of physician-scientists in dermatology. In addition, Linos is committed to mentorship and supporting students across all levels of education to pursue their passions including students in high school and undergraduates.

    Clinically, Dr. Linos is a Board Certified Dermatologist and cares for patients with skin disease in the Stanford Dermatology teaching clinics.

    BioMarc Lipsitch and his research group study the impact of medical and public health interventions and human immunity on pathogen populations and the consequences of these changes for human health. Within this broad umbrella we consider both ecological effects (modulating the amount of transmission and infection) and evolutionary ones (shaping the genetic composition of the populations of infectious agents). Specific areas of interest include natural selection imposed by strain-specific vaccines and antibiotics, design and evaluation of measures to control outbreaks and pandemics, methods for evaluating vaccine efficacy, and surveillance design. Tools include mathematical and computational modeling, pathogen population genomics, causal inference methods, and (in the past) experimental microbiology and immunology. In addition to this scientific research, we work in the areas of research ethics and biosecurity (through an appointment at the Center for International Security and Cooperation). He joined Stanford in 2026. From 1999-2025 he was a faculty member at Harvard TH Chan Schooll of Public Health, where he was Professor of Epidemiology (20062025) and founding Director of the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics (2009-2025). He was founding Director for Science and then Senior Advisor at the CDC's Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics (2021-5).

    BioDr. Liu is a board-certified, fellowship-trained specialist in allergy/immunology and infectious disease. She is also a clinical associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Liu treats infections in patients with compromised immune systems, whether due to a primary immune deficiency or a condition like cancer or organ transplant. She helps patients to develop tolerance to medications they are allergic to so that they can receive the best, and sometimes the only, treatments available to them. She also treats allergies to antibiotics, aspirin, NSAIDs, chemotherapy, and more. She sees patients both long term and for urgent referrals, such as in cases of perioperative anaphylaxis. Dr. Liu also helps pediatric patients manage drug and food allergies.

    One of Dr. Liu’s areas of focus is helping patients with allergies to antibiotics determine when they have lost an allergy, what antibiotics they can tolerate, and when to induce tolerance to an antibiotic. This not only can benefit the patient, but also have a positive public health impact, as labeling patients with a penicillin allergy may negatively affect their care and increase use
    of broad-spectrum antibiotics.

    She collaborates closely with colleagues from other disciplines, including pulmonology, otolaryngology, oncology, cardiology, dermatology, anesthesiology, and surgery. Her key objective in working with referring physicians is to help them safely deliver the best care for their patients.

    For patients and families, Dr. Liu strives to help them navigate their care journey with as much ease and dignity as possible during what may be the most challenging time of their life. Her goal is to offer patients options, even when it may appear that they have no options left.

    Dr. Liu’s research interests include optimizing care of patients with antibiotic allergies, including through use of decision support tools.

    Dr. Liu has authored articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Immunology, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in Practice, Clinical and Experimental Allergy, Mucosal Immunology, Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease, Science, and other publications. Dr. Liu authored the book chapter “Hypersensitivity Reactions to Monoclonal Antibodies” in Drug Allergy Testing.

    Dr. Liu is certified in infectious disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in allergy and immunology by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology. She is also a member of the American College of Physicians, Infectious Diseases Society of America, and American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.

    She has given presentations on antibiotic allergies, drug desensitization, and aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease, among other topics.     BioDr. Liu and her research program are dedicated to improving the lives of older adults with kidney disease. Currently her research focuses on mobility, which is the ability to move safely and reliably from one place to another. In older adults, poor mobility strongly predicts future disability and death. Retaining mobility has been cited by older adults as fundamental to quality to life; yet many older persons with kidney disease, especially those with late stage chronic kidney disease or outright kidney failure, have trouble just walking across the room or transferring to a chair. Dually trained in geriatric medicine and epidemiology, Dr. Liu also has significant expertise in older adult clinical trials, including safety trials of novel agents as well as intervention studies to reduce infections in older populations.

    BioNancy Liu is a hospitalist and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Hospital Medicine. She earned her medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and completed her internal medicine residency training at Stanford Health Care, where she was awarded the Julian Wolfsohn Award for dedication to leadership, clinical practice, and teaching during residency. Her interests are in quality improvement, end of life care, and health equity for underserved populations.

    BioDr. Michelle Lo MD, FACP is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine and Stanford School of Medicine. Growing up in Taiwan and in the Bay Area, she received her undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology at University of California Berkeley, and her medical degree at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She then moved to NYU Grossman School of Medicine for her residency in Internal Medicine. She continued as Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine-Tisch Hospital from 2019-2020. After working in NYC during the COVID-19 pandemic, she returned to California to continue her career at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara as a Hospitalist and affiliate Clinical Instructor at Stanford School of Medicine from 2020-2025, where she co-developed the Point of Care Ultrasound curriculum and was awarded the Hospitalist Teaching Award 3 years. She joined the Stanford School of Medicine Faculty in 2025. Her interests include medical education, curricular development, and use of Point-of-Care Ultrasound in the care of hospitalized patients.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research group is interested in studying the transmission of infectious diseases and impact of public health interventions with an ultimate goal of informing public health policy. We study a diverse set of pathogens, both domestically and internationally, including vaccine-preventable infections (including COVID-19) and neglected parasitic diseases (such as schistosomiasis). Our group applies diverse computational methodologies, including tools from fields of epidemiology, mathematical and statistical modeling, simulation, and policy analysis.

    A large emphasis of our work is translating scientific evidence into public health policy. Our track record includes multiple studies that have changed policy in the fields of neglected parasitic diseases and COVID-19. We work closely with policy organizations like the World Health Organization and the California Department of Public Health. Nathan was the lead writer of the World Health Organization guidelines on schistosomiasis (2022) and strongyloidiasis (2024).

    Our current research focuses on the following areas:
    (1) Vaccine-preventable infectious diseases (including measles and COVID-19) in the United States, with a focus on studying vaccines, transmission dynamics, and re-emergence of vaccine-eliminated diseases (emphasis on measles)
    (2) Public health strategies for control and elimination of globally important neglected infectious diseases, such as helminths infections (schistosomiasis, strongyloidiasis) and typhoid fever

    Our current NIH funded projects include:
    (1) Real-time predictive modeling for public health departments to control infectious diseases (DP2 AI170485, PI: Lo)
    (2) Precision mapping of Schistosoma mansoni risk for targeted public health control and elimination (R01 AI179771, PI: Lo)

    BioDr. Karl Lorenz, MD MSHS is a general internal medicine and palliative care physician, and Section chief of the VA Palo Alto-Stanford Palliative Care Program. Formerly at the VA Greater Los Angeles, Dr. Lorenz directed palliative care research at the VA Center for Innovation to Implementation and served on the faculty at the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Lorenz is a member of the VA’s national Hospice and Palliative Care Program (HPC) leadership team, director of the operational palliative care Quality Improvement Resource Center (QuIRC), and adjunct facility staff member at RAND. Dr. Lorenz’s work and leadership has been influential to the field of palliative care research. Under Dr. Lorenz’s leadership, since 2009 the Quality Improvement Resource Center (QuIRC) has served as one of three national leadership Centers responsible for strategic and operational support of the VA’s national hospice and palliative care programs. QuIRC develops and implements provider facing electronic tools for the VA’s national electronic medical record to improve the quality of palliative care. In that role, Dr. Lorenz participates with the national leadership team in strategic planning, policy development, and providing resources to support operational efforts. Dr. Lorenz has contributed to the field of global palliative care, serving the World Health Organization in its development of Palliative Care for Older People and leading methods for Palliative Care Essential Medications.

    BioDr. Janice Lu is Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She specializes in the treatment of breast cancer, with expertise in hormone receptor–positive and HER2-positive disease, antibody-drug conjugates, and immunotherapy. Dr. Lu has led and contributed to multiple clinical trials, including playing a key role in the EMERALD trial, which resulted in FDA approval of the first oral SERD for ESR1-mutated ER+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer. Her translational research focuses on liquid biopsy, epigenetics, AI and multiomics approaches to treatment resistance. She has chaired national sessions on precision oncology and holds leadership roles with NRG Oncology and ASCO, including Vice-Chair of the NRG Immunotherapy Subcommittee and Track Leader for ASCO’s Developmental Therapeutics and Targeted Therapy Education Program. She has also served on committees for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG).

    Dr. Lu completed her Hematology and Oncology fellowship at New York University School of Medicine and earned a PhD in epigenetics under the mentorship of late Dr. David Allis, a pioneer in the field and 2018 Lasker Laureate. Prior to joining Stanford, she was Director of Breast Medical Oncology and led the Circulating Tumor Cell (CTC) Core Lab at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, before returning to the Bay Area to be with her family and to further expand research and patient-centered care.

    BioSydney Lu is an assistant professor and physician-scientist in the Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine with a broad interest in both normal and abnormal RNA processing in the context of normal physiology and disease states. The laboratory studies translational questions regarding the mechanistic basis of RNA processing abnormalities in malignant blood disorders, their implications for leukemogenesis and cancer biology, as well as resultant therapeutic opportunities.

    As a physician, Sydney’s group is particularly focused on dissecting RNA processing abnormalities in primary patient samples and disease-relevant preclinical model systems. Lab members employ a variety of ‘wet-lab’ and computational approaches to study transcriptome abnormalities in (1) states of immune dysfunction, (2) myeloid blood cancers such as myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia, and (3) lymphoid blood cancers such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Additional projects are focused on novel therapeutics, including multiple targeted agents which modulate RNA processing, for the selective treatment of these diseases.

    For every patient, he creates a customized care plan. Plans focus on helping each person enjoy the best possible health and wellness.

    Dr. Lutley has helped advance care through research. He has shared his research discoveries with his peers in invited presentations. Topics include drug prices in community pharmacies and the quality of interactions between patients and resident physicians.

    While an internal medicine resident at Stanford, Dr. Lutley served as a member of the Stanford Ambulatory Care Excellence Program. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of outpatient primary care.

    Dr. Lutley helps educate the primary care doctors of tomorrow. He is a clinical assistant professor of primary care and population health in the Stanford Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care.

    Before joining Stanford, Dr. Lutley performed needs assessments and care coordination with local public health agencies in Flint, Michigan.

    Recognition for his achievements includes induction in the Gold Humanism Honor Society. This national organization honors senior medical students, residents, teachers and others for excellence in clinical care, leadership, and compassion. Additional honors for Dr. Lutley include induction in Alpha Omega Alpha, the honor society in the field of medicine.

She furthered her expertise as the 2021-22 Vera Moulton Wall Center eBay Fellow in Pulmonary Vascular Disease.

    Today, Dr. Lyn is a member of the Stanford Health Care Adult Pulmonary Hypertension team, serving as a clinician educator and Assistant Director of the Stanford CTEPH program. Her clinical and research interests focus on CTEPH, post-acute PE care and advancing health equity within pulmonary vascular diseases.

    BioStephen Ma is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. His undergraduate degree was in Electrical Engineering at Princeton University, after which he pursued his MD/PhD at Columbia University. He then moved to Stanford University for his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Clinical Informatics prior to joining the faculty. His clinical expertise is in the care of adult patients admitted to the inpatient general medicine services.

    He is fellowship-trained in clinical informatics with the following areas of focus: 1) the implementation and evaluation of emerging technologies such as ambient AI scribes, 2) clinician-centered analytics and reporting, 3) the development of machine learning algorithms and workflows for standardization of care, and 4) care team communication and on-call scheduling. His overall approach to technology integration into healthcare emphasizes user-centered design, data-driven decision making, and rigorous demonstration of outcomes.

    He previously performed his doctoral work in the laboratory of Professor Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic where he developed human cardiac models of disease incorporating patient-derived stem cells, optogenetics, tissue engineering, optoelectronics, and video processing.

We have discovered novel insights into the biology of human T cell exhaustion and developed approaches to prevent and reverse this phenomenon.

    Research Focus:

    My primary research interest is the design and conduct of multicenter clinical trials and analyses of important clinical cardiac issues using large patient databases. My research focuses on novel anticoagulation agents for the treatment of acute coronary syndromes and atrial fibrillation, the study of agents targeted to protect the myocardium during reperfusion therapy for acute myocardial infarction, and the evaluation of cardiovascular safety of diabetic therapies. I am also interested in the methodology of clinical trials. Current research activities include standardization of the definition of myocardial infarction used in clinical trials, the adjudication of suspected clinical endpoint events by Clinical Event Committees (CEC), and the efficient operational conduct of large multinational clinical trials.

    BioDr. Anurag Mairal is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine and the Director, Global Translation and Outreach Programs at Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign, Stanford University. He is also a Faculty Fellow and Lead for Technology Innovation and Impact at Center for Innovation in Global Health. In these roles, he leads initiatives focused on applying the biodesign process to resource-constrained settings globally. Further, he facilitates opportunities for students, faculty and fellows at Stanford to work on global healthcare needs. He is founding co-Director for MED 232, Global Health: Scaling Health Technology Innovations in Low Resource Settings, and was part of the founding faculty team for BIOE 371, Global Biodesign: Medical Technology in an International Context, graduate-level courses offered to engineering, business, and medical students at Stanford University. Earlier, he served as Associate Director for the Stanford-India Biodesign and Singapore-Stanford Biodesign programs. He serves as the Founding Chair of BME IDEA APAC (now called APAC Biodesign Alliance), a community of medtech innovation programs in Asia Pacific, partnering closely with the industry and academia in the region. He is also an Honorary Professor at University of Cape Town, South Africa. Concurrently, he is a co-founder and Executive Vice President of Orbees Medical, a SF Bay Area-based strategy consulting firm serving global healthcare industry, with a focus on medtech, pharmaceutical, and digital health industry. 

    Dr. Mairal has an extensive background in medical technology development and commercialization, collaborating with partners in the U.S., India, China, and other emerging markets to advance product development, manufacturing, and distribution. Recently, he took a sabbatical for two years to take a senior leadership role at PATH, a major global health nonprofit based in Seattle. In this role, he oversaw research and development, commercialization, and implementation of technologies in PATH’s medical devices, diagnostics, and digital health divisions. Previously, he held several positions at Johnson & Johnson, including Business Development Director and Product Director for structural heart, cardiology, and peripheral vascular products at Cordis. Before joining J&J, he was a Group Leader and a Process Development Manager at Membrane Technology and Research (MTR). At MTR, he was responsible for business development, strategic alliances, and product development in the bioseparations area. An active mentor to entrepreneurs and industry professionals, he serves as the chair of PATH’s Bay Area Leadership Council; co-chair of the global advisory board at EPPIC Global Network; chair of Faculty Alumni Network and member of the Board Executive Committee at IIT Bombay Heritage Foundation; and President of Sewa International - Bay Area. Dr. Mairal has won several recognitions, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the National Institute of Technology, Raipur.

    Dr. Mairal earned a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. He also holds an MS in chemical engineering from the Indian Institution of Technology in Mumbai and a BS in chemical engineering from National Institute of Technology, Raipur. Dr. Mairal was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Twente, Netherlands and at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. At BerkeleyHaas, he was a founding co-Chairman of the South Asia Business Conference and Chair of the Biotech Panel for the Asia Business Conference. His work has been published in more than 30 publications, and he has seven issued patents.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Majeti lab focuses on the molecular/genomic characterization and therapeutic targeting of leukemia stem cells in human hematologic malignancies, particularly acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Our lab uses experimental hematology methods, stem cell assays, genome editing, and bioinformatics to define and investigate drivers of leukemia stem cell behavior. As part of these studies, we have led the development and application of robust xenotransplantation assays for human hematopoietic cells.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Josh Makower is the Boston Scientific Applied Bioengineering Professor of Medicine and of Bioengineering at the Stanford University Schools of Medicine and Engineering and the Director of the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, the program he co-founded with Dr. Paul Yock twenty years ago. Josh helped create the fundamental structure of the Center’s core curriculum and is the chief architect of what is now called “The Biodesign Process.” Over the past 20 years since Josh and Paul founded Biodesign, this curriculum and the associated textbook has been used at Stanford and across the world to train hundreds of thousands of students, faculty and industry leaders on the Biodesign process towards the advancement of medical innovation for the improvement of patient care. Josh has practiced these same techniques directly as the Founder & Executive Chairman of ExploraMed, a medical device incubator, creating 9 companies since 1995. She also leads several echocardiography quality improvement projects, weekly multi-modality imaging educational seminars, and fellow workshops across the PAVA HCS and Stanford echo labs.

    BioDr. Manugian is a board-certified internal medicine doctor at Stanford Primary Care in Portola Valley. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    He has experience diagnosing, managing, and treating a wide range of conditions. These include gastrointestinal disorders, hypertension (high blood pressure), and obesity. Dr. Manugian develops an individualized care plan for each one of his patients.

    Dr. Manugian’s research interests include blood pressure medication, gastric bypass surgery, and restless legs syndrome. He received a student research grant to study how the body processes glucagon (a hormone that regulates blood sugar) following gastric bypass surgery. Dr. Manugian has also studied muscle inflammation as a rare side effect of statins (drugs that lower cholesterol). He monitored a clinical trial evaluating the prescribing of drugs to lower high blood pressure. As a clinical research associate at the Stanford University Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine, Dr. Manugian studied medications to treat restless legs syndrome.

    Dr. Manugian presented research to his peers during his residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He has taught medical students, residents, and physicians about a variety of topics, including alcohol abuse, tick-born illnesses, and managing indigestion.

    Dr. Manugian is a member of the American College of Physicians.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Maron is the Co-Chair and Principal Investigator of the ISCHEMIA trial, and Co-Chair of the ISCHEMIA-CKD trial. These large, international, NIH-funded studies will determine whether an initial invasive strategy of cardiac catheterization and revascularization plus optimal medical therapy will reduce cardiovascular events in patients with and without chronic kidney disease and at least moderate ischemia compared to an initial conservative strategy of optimal medical therapy alone.

    BioDr. Ashley Martinez is a board-certified, fellowship-trained nephrologist with the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Martinez specializes in caring for kidney transplant recipients. She has expertise in pre-transplant evaluation and readiness, immunosuppression, kidney allograft survival, and the prevention and treatment of post-transplant complications. She prioritizes clear, personalized communication at every point to improve care.

    Dr. Martinez earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed her residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. She completed clinical and research fellowships in nephrology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she also earned a master’s degree in clinical research. She completed her transplant nephrology fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Martinez’s research interests focus on addressing the needs of patients impacted by language barriers. Her work has emphasized the need to improve provider-patient communication, patient education, and evaluation tools for patients with limited English proficiency. She aims to increase awareness of communication gaps and increase patient-centered communication throughout the course of kidney care.

    Dr. Martinez has published her findings in peer-reviewed journals including JAMA Network Open and Kidney360. She has also presented at the National Kidney Foundation Spring Clinical Meetings.

    Dr. Martinez is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Transplantation, and the National Kidney Foundation.

    BioDr. Meffre obtained his PhD in Immunology from the Université d’Aix-Marseille in France before he moved to the USA as a postdoc fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Michel Nussenzweig at The Rockefeller University in New York City. He became an assistant professor at Cornell University in 2003 before being recruited at Yale University as associate professor in 2009. He was tenured at Yale in 2014 before he joined the Department of Medicine/Division of Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford University as a tenured full professor in 2022.

    Dr. Meffre’s work focuses on the etiology of autoimmune syndromes and the roles played by B cells in these diseases. His group characterized the abnormal selection of developing autoreactive B cells in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), type 1 diabetes (T1D), multiple sclerosis (MS) and Sjögren’s syndrome, resulting in large numbers of autoreactive naïve B cells accumulating in the patient’s blood. Hence, these autoreactive B cells may present self-antigens to T cells and initiate autoimmune diseases. These early B cell tolerance defects are likely primary to these autoimmune diseases and may result from genetic factors such as the 1858T PTPN22 allele that segregates with RA, SLE and T1D and correlate with an impaired removal of developing autoreactive B cells.
    His research goals also consist in characterizing the molecules and pathways involved in the establishment of B cell tolerance and the removal of developing autoreactive B cells generated by random V(D)J recombination through the investigation of rare patients with primary immunodeficiency (PID) enrolled through an international network. Alteration of B cell receptor (BCR) or Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling in PID patients results in a defective central B cell tolerance and a failure to counterselect developing autoreactive B cells in the bone marrow. In contrast, functional and suppressive regulatory T cells play a key role in preventing the accumulation of autoreactive clones in the mature naïve B cell compartment. The recent development of humanized mouse models recapitulating early B cell tolerance checkpoints and their defects in autoimmune settings allow further in-depth investigation of tolerance mechanisms and the development of novel approaches to restore defective central and peripheral B cell tolerance checkpoints and thwart autoimmunity.

    BioDr. Mehta is a board-certified, fellowship-trained medical oncologist at the Stanford Medicine Cancer Center. He is also an adjunct clinical assistant professor in the gastrointestinal (GI) oncology group of the Department of Medicine, Division of Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Mehta specializes in gastrointestinal cancer, with a particular focus on pancreatic and gastric cancers. He also treats colorectal cancers. His treatment specialties include immunotherapy — helping a patient’s immune system fight cancer — and targeted therapies, which send cancer-fighting drugs to specific cancer cell molecules.

    His research interests include understanding why GI cancers resist treatments and identifying new ways to treat these tumors. In particular, he is interested in GI tumor immunology, which focuses on directing a person’s immune system to help destroy cancer cells. He also has a special interest in tumor plasticity, which represents the ability of a tumor cell to evolve and develop resistance to therapies.

    Dr. Mehta has earned research awards and grants from organizations including the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Society of Hematology (ASH), and the National Institutes of Health.

    Dr. Mehta has published in many peer-reviewed journals, including Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Immunology, Nature Medicine, Nature Cancer, Cancer Discovery and Immunity. He has written book chapters on subjects including esophageal and gastric cancer. He has also presented his research on topics including tumor immunology and pancreatic cancer at dozens of symposia and meetings around the country.

    BioDr. Mercola is Professor of Medicine and Professor in the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. He completed postdoctoral training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, was on the faculty in the Department of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School for 12 years, and later at the Sanford-Burnham-Prebys Institute and Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego before relocating to Stanford in 2015.

    Prof. Mercola is known for identifying many of the factors that are responsible for inducing and forming the heart, including the discovery that Wnt inhibition is a critical step in cardiogenesis that provided the conceptual basis and reagents for the large-scale production of cardiovascular tissues from pluripotent stem cells. He has collaborated with medicinal chemists, optical engineers and software developers to pioneer the use of patient iPSC-cardiomyocytes for disease modeling, safety pharmacology and drug development. His academic research is focused on developing and using quantitative high throughput assays of patient-specific cardiomyocyte function to discover druggable targets for preserving contractile function in heart failure and promoting regeneration following ischemic injury. He co-established drug screening and assay development at the Conrad Prebys Drug Discovery Center (San Diego), which operated as one of 4 large screening centers of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) Molecular Libraries screening initiative and continues as one of the largest academic drug screening centers.

    Prof. Mercola received an NIH MERIT award for his work on heart formation. He holds numerous patents, including describing the invention of the first engineered dominant negative protein and small molecules for stem cell and cancer applications. He serves on multiple editorial and advisory boards, including Vala Sciences, Regencor, The Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research and the Human Biomolecular Research Institute. His laboratory is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Phospholamban Foundation and Fondation Leducq.
