These stem/ progenitor cells are in direct contact with the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which acts as part of their niche. Our research program encompasses the early neural stem cell niche, neural tube closure, CSF, metabolism, and cortical neuronal development. We are dedicated to broad collaboration focused on translating an understanding of neurodevelopment and CSF biology into regenerative strategies.

Visiting Postdoctoral Scholar, Pediatrics - General PediatricsBioCaroline Figueroa, MD, PhD, is a visiting scholar at Stanford University. She is the 2025–26 Dutch Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice. She is an assistant professor at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands, where she leads the Research on Inclusive Solutions and Empowerment in Digital Health (RISE) group. Her work focuses on making digital mental health solutions — such as apps and AI-chatbots — safe, effective, and accessible, particularly for adolescents, young adults, and women. Figueroa’s research on digital health equity has directly informed policy documents by global organizations such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations, and has been published in leading journals including Lancet Digital Health, Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, and Human Brain Mapping.
Figueroa is a medical doctor with a PhD in the neuroscience of depression from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Oxford; she also has several years of experience in clinical psychiatry. Before joining TU Delft, she was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Berkeley. -
Michael Fischbach

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe microbiome carries out extraordinary feats of biology: it produces hundreds of molecules, many of which impact host physiology; modulates immune function potently and specifically; self-organizes biogeographically; and exhibits profound stability in the face of perturbations. Our lab studies the mechanisms of microbiome-host interactions. Our approach is based on two technologies we recently developed: a complex (119-member) defined gut community that serves as an analytically manageable but biologically relevant system for experimentation, and new genetic systems for common species from the microbiome. Using these systems, we investigate mechanisms at the community level and the strain level.
1) Community-level mechanisms. A typical gut microbiome consists of 200-250 bacterial species that span >6 orders of magnitude in relative abundance. As a system, these bacteria carry out extraordinary feats of metabolite consumption and production, elicit a variety of specific immune cell populations, self-organize geographically and metabolically, and exhibit profound resilience against a wide range of perturbations. Yet remarkably little is known about how the community functions as a system. We are exploring this by asking two broad questions: How do groups of organisms work together to influence immune function? What are the mechanisms that govern metabolism and ecology at the 100+ strain scale? Our goal is to learn rules that will enable us to design communities that solve specific therapeutic problems.
2) Strain-level mechanisms. Even though gut and skin colonists live in communities, individual strains can have an extraordinary impact on host biology. We focus on two broad (and partially overlapping) categories:
Immune modulation: Can we redirect colonist-specific T cells against an antigen of interest by expressing it on the surface of a bacterium? How do skin colonists induce high levels of Staphylococcus-specific antibodies in mice and humans?
Abundant microbiome-derived molecules: By constructing single-strain/single-gene knockouts in a complex defined community, we will ask: What are the effects of bacterially produced molecules on host metabolism and immunology? Can the molecular output of low-abundance organisms impact host physiology?
3) Cell and gene therapy. We have begun two new efforts in mammalian cell and gene therapies. First, we are developing methods that enable cell-type specific delivery of genome editing payloads in vivo. We are especially interested in delivery vehicles that are customizable and easy to manufacture. Second, we have begun a comprehensive genome mining effort with an emphasis on understudied or entirely novel enzyme systems with utility in mammalian genome editing. -

BioDr. Philip Fisher is the Diana Chen Professor of Early Childhood Learning in the Graduate School of Education and the Director of the Stanford Center on Early Childhood. His research, focuses on developing and evaluating scalable early childhood interventions in communities, and on translating scientific knowledge regarding healthy development under conditions of adversity for use in social policy and programs. He is particularly interested in the effects of early stressful experiences on children's development, and in prevention and treatment programs for improving children's functioning in areas such as relationships with caregivers and peers, social-emotional development, and academic achievement. He is currently the lead investigator in the ongoing RAPID-EC project, a national survey on the well-being of households with young children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Fisher is the developer of a number of widely implemented evidence-based interventions for supporting healthy child development in the context of social and economic adversity, including Treatment Foster Care Oregon for Preschoolers (TFCO-P) and Kids in Transition to School (KITS). Most recently, he developed the Filming Interactions to Nurture Development (FIND) video coaching program for supporting parenting in the home environment and early childhood care and education professionals in childcare and preschool contexts. He has published over 250 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals. He is the recipient of the 2012 Society for Prevention Research Translational Science Award, and a 2019 Fellow of the American Psychological Society.

Eric Foote

BioEric Foote is a pediatric hospitalist with experience conducting clinical and public health research around the world. His research focuses on identifying and intervening on health disparities in low income countries and in low resource settings. Currently, he is developing and evaluating a community health worker-led household phototherapy intervention to extend access to neonatal jaundice care for newborns in rural Bangladesh. He is also working to improve SARS-CoV-2 testing and genomic surveillance across California and worldwide.

BioDaiana Fornes is a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, supported by a Maternal & Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI) Postdoctoral Fellowship. Her research centers on reproductive biology and pregnancy disorders, with a particular focus on uterine contractility, preterm labor, and uterine atony. She investigates calcium signaling pathways, including the role of TRPV4 ion channels, to identify novel therapeutic strategies aimed at improving maternal health outcomes.
Daiana earned her PhD from the University of Buenos Aires, where she studied metabolic alterations during pregnancy and their effects on fetal development. Her training has provided her with a strong foundation in translational research, with extensive experience in experimental design, molecular biology, and the analysis of signaling pathways. -

BioJanene H. Fuerch, MD is a Clinical Associate Professor of Neonatology at Stanford University Medical Center, as well as an innovator, educator, researcher and physician entrepreneur. She has an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience from Brown University and a medical degree from the Jacobs School of Medicine at SUNY Buffalo. At Stanford University she completed a pediatrics residency, neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship and the Byers Center for Biodesign Innovation Fellowship.
She is also Assistant Director of the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship Program at Stanford University, and Co-Director of Impact1 where she mentors and advises new entrepreneurs through all aspects of medical device development, from identifying clinical needs to commercialization. Her specific areas of investigational interest include the development and commercialization process of neonatal, pediatric and maternal health medical devices as well as the utilization of a simulated environment to develop and test medical devices. She is a national leader in neonatal resuscitation, ECMO, device development and has been an AHRQ and FDA funded investigator. But her work extends outside of the academic realm to industry having co-founded EMME (acquired by Simple Health 2022) an award-winning reproductive health company, medical director for Novonate (acquired by Laborie 2023) a neonatal umbilical catheter securement company and notable consultant for Vitara (EXTEND - artificial environment to decrease complications of prematurity), and Avanos™. Janene is passionate about improving the health of children and newborns through medical device innovation and research. -

Our group combines high parameter mass cytometry (a.k.a Cytometry by Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry, CyTOF), with advanced bio-computational methods to study how the human immune system responds and adapts to acute physiological perturbations. The laboratory currently focuses on two clinical scenarios: surgical trauma and pregnancy.

On Partial Leave from 02/01/2025 To 03/29/2026BioOur lab works at the interface of biotechnology, computational biology, cellular biology, and clinical medicine to develop and apply new tools for characterizing genetic variation across single cells within a tissue with unparalleled sensitivity and accuracy. We are focused on applying these technologies to study cancer clonal evolution while patients are undergoing treatment with the aim of identifying cancer clonotypes that are associated with resistance to specific drugs so as to better understand and predict treatment response. We are also applying these methods to understand how more virulent pathogens emerge from a population of bacteria or viruses with an emphasis on developing a deeper understanding of how antibiotic resistance develops.

Benedikt joined the Amieva Lab from Germany in 2022. During his B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs in zoology, he became fascinated with 3D imaging approaches to study small animal microanatomy. He spent his PhD developing in situ imaging approaches to study deep-sea symbioses and fell in love with studying host-microbe interactions. In the Amieva Lab, Benedikt will advance his previously developed correlative chemical imaging techniques to resolve metabolic and cellular interactions that drive H. pylori pathogenesis in the gastric glands.

Yael Gernez
Clinical Associate Professor, Pediatrics - Immunology
BioMy clinic focuses on solving the molecular puzzles that underlie rare allergic and immunologic diseases to shed light on fundamental principles governing allergy, inflammation and immune system defects. My goal is to find better and safer therapies for my patients with rare diseases that include autoinflammation, autoimmunity and primary immune deficiency. It is important to highlight that every patient requires individualized therapeutic approaches based on their underlying genetic problem and the types and severity of their clinical manifestations. For some patients, a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is curative while for others, a targeted drug therapy, such as a biologic or small molecule agent, is most suitable. In some cases, a truly novel therapy may be required, .e.g., anti-sense oligonucleotide therapy to suppress aberrant gene splicing or adoptive cellular therapy. My passion is to provide the best personalized therapy for our patients with allergy and immunology diseases. This often requires performing very specialized functional assays and in some cases in enlisting laboratories with specific expertise or interest in particular genetic disorders.

Clinical Associate Professor, PediatricsBioDr. Ghazi-Askar is Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and, by courtesy, of Pediatrics and serves as the Director of Pediatric Ultrasound Education in the Department of Emergency Medicine . As an academic clinical educator in with expertise in pediatric and adult point-of-care ultrasound, Dr. Ghazi-Askar's clinical focus is on children and young adults who seek care in the pediatric emergency department. She is specialty-board certified in pediatric emergency medicine.
At a national level, Dr. Ghazi-Askar is the Chair of Point-of-Care Ultrasound subcommittee for the Association of Pediatric Program Directors (APPD), where she is leading the development of an educational curriculum for pediatric residency point-of-care ultrasound.
Dr. Ghazi-Askar also has expertise in the field of Tele-ultrasound, where she is able to teach point-of-care ultrasound virtually where clinical expertise may otherwise not be available. Here she is able to provide education and health equity when it is most needed. -
Ruth Margaret Gibson

Affiliate, Pediatrics - NeonatologyBioDr. Ruth Gibson, PhD (如詩 吉布森), is a scholar at Stanford University with appointments at the Center for Innovation and Global Health (CIGH) and the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) within the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.
Dr. Gibson specializes in global health and foreign affairs with a dedicated focus on improving maternal and child health in geopolitically complex regions affected by war and geopolitical challenges.
She holds an Honour's Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from the University of Toronto, a fellowship in Medical Education from the Wilson Center for Medical Education at the University Health Network, and a PhD in Global Health and Strategic Studies from the University of British Columbia, and a postdoctoral fellowship from Stanford University. Fluent in English and French, and proficient in Mandarin Chinese, Dr. Gibson has spent a decade living abroad, engaging in humanitarian and global health initiatives across eight countries on five continents. Her experience spans fragile regions grappling with poverty, human rights issues, and war.
Currently, she is co-leading a Lancet Series on Global Health and Foreign Engagement with Professor Gary Darmstadt. Recently, she published significant findings on the impact of foreign aid sanctions on maternal and child health in The Lancet Global Health, garnering attention in Nature Medicine, The Stanford Report, and numerous international media outlets due to its critical relevance in today’s geopolitical landscape.
Dr. Gibson collaborates with the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights to develop a universal monitoring system to assess the impact of sanctions on human rights. Her research has been cited in UN General Assembly meetings by the Special Rapporteur on Unilateral Coercive Measures. She also contributes to mental health reports for the International Criminal Court's prosecution of war crimes and collaborates with the Global Burden of Disease Consortium at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, to publish health estimations and forecasts in The Lancet.
Leading a diverse team of academic scholars and independent experts and consultants, Dr. Gibson fosters a collaborative environment that encourages participation across various fields, including politics, statistics, simulation modeling, and social media design. Rachel Gilgoff

BioAs a board-certified general pediatrician, child abuse pediatrician, and integrative medicine specialist, Dr. Gilgoff brings a multidisciplinary, whole-family approach to ACEs, toxic stress, healing, and well-being. She is currently an advisor with the California Aces Aware Initiative, UCLA-UCSF ACEs Aware Family Resilience Network (UCAAN), and the Center for Youth Wellness, a program of Safe and Sound, as well as an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is the co-founder of the National Committee on Asthma and Toxic Stress and co-PI on “Systems-based, Multidisciplinary Assessment of Adversity and Toxic Stress for Individualized Care (The SYSTEMAATIC Project),” an ACEs and Precision Medicine research project through the California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine (CIAPM). She co-created the “Stress Busters: Clinical Strategies for Preventing and Mitigating Toxic Stress,” a free, on-line course to help clinicians develop their clinical response to childhood adversity and toxic stress. In tandem, she led the development of the ACEs Aware Stress Busters Resource Webpage, sharing tools and resources to prevent and heal toxic stress for all of us. Dr. Gilgoff is dedicated to conducting translational research and promoting patient-centered, individualized, multidisciplinary clinical care to address health issues resulting from child abuse and toxic stress.

Kellen Glinder
Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatrics - General Pediatrics
BioDr. Kellen Glinder is a distinguished pediatrician with over two decades of experience in Silicon Valley. He practiced for 17 years at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Pediatric department in Palo Alto where he helped build and implement many of the pediatric electronic medical record tools currently in use throughout Sutter Health. He founded and chaired the PAMF Asthma Committee and the Sutter Childhood Asthma Committee as well as developed a program for pediatric pulmonary function testing and asthma education, including training asthma educators statewide for underfunded clinics in California.
In his role as Pediatric Department Chair at PAMF Palo Alto, he worked closely with Stanford Children's Hospital to coordinate care for our children in our community and facilitate collaboration between PAMF, Sutter, and Stanford Children's Hospital, including representing the community pediatricians on the Medical Executive Committee of Stanford Children's Hospital. His advocacy for children extends to his expertise on the Silicon Valley Advisory Council of Commonsense Media and some of his public speaking roles. He is also the author of "Pause, Cope, and Connect," a book to teaching mindfulness practices to grade school children and has brought his own mindfulness practice to the classroom, teaching courses in the art of medical communication at several institutions, including Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.
Dr. Glinder currently sees patients at Maison Medical Group, a small private clinic in Portola Valley, CA. -
Anna L Gloyn
Professor of Pediatrics (Endocrinology) and of Genetics
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAnna's current research projects are focused on the translation of genetic association signals for type 2 diabetes and glycaemic traits into cellular and molecular mechanisms for beta-cell dysfunction and diabetes. Her group uses a variety of complementary approaches, including human genetics, functional genomics, physiology and islet-biology to dissect out the molecular mechanisms driving disease pathogenesis.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research has focused on the medical complications of adolescents with eating disorders. My specific area of study has been the etiology and implications of amenorrhea in adolescents with eating disorders, in particular the management of reduced bone mass and osteoporosis in anorexia nervosa.

Natalia Gomez-Ospina

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Gomez-Ospina is a physician scientist and medical geneticist with a strong interest in the diagnosis and management of genetic diseases.
1) Lysosomal storage diseases:
Her research program is on developing better therapies for a large class of neurodegenerative diseases in children known as lysosomal storage disorders. Her current focus is on developing genome editing of hematopoietic stem cells as a therapeutic approach for these diseases beginning with Mucopolysaccharidosis type 1 and Gaucher disease. She established a genetic approach where therapeutic proteins can be targeted to a single well-characterized place in the genome known as a safe harbor. This approach constitutes a flexible, “one size fits all” approach that is independent of specific genes and mutations. This strategy, in which the hematopoietic system is commandeered to express and deliver therapeutic proteins to the brain can potentially change the current approaches to treating childhood neurodegenerative diseases and pave the way for alternative therapies for adult neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease
2) Point of care ammonia testing
She also works in collaboration with other researchers at Stanford to develop point-of-care testing for serum ammonia levels. Such device will greatly improve the quality of life of children and families with metabolic disorders with hyperammonemia.
3) Gene discovery
Dr Gomez-Ospina lead a multi-institutional collaboration resulting in the discovery of a novel genetic cause of neonatal and infantile cholestatic liver disease. She collaborated in the description of two novel neurologic syndromes caused by mutations in DYRK1 and CHD4.
