His design interests include organizing and presenting workshops on creativity, group interactions, and the problem solving process. Formerly he researched the kinematics, dynamics, control, and design of computer controlled mechanical devices. In kinematics, he studied the mathematical theory of rigid body motions and its application to the design of machines.

Theodore Roth

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Roth Lab develops, applies, and translates scalable genetic manipulation technologies in primary human cells and complex in vivo tissue environments. Working with students, trainees, and staff with backgrounds across bioengineering, genetics, immunology, oncology, and pathology, the lab has developed CRISPR-All, a unified genetic perturbation language able to arbitrarily and combinatorially examine genetic perturbations across perturbation type and scale in primary human cells. Ongoing applications of CRISPR-All in the lab have revealed surprising capacities to synthetically engineer human cells beyond evolved cellular states. These new capacities to perturb human cell’s genetics beyond their evolved functionality drives ongoing work to understand the biology and therapeutic potential of synthetic cell state engineering - in essence learning how to build new human genes tailor made for a specific cell and specific environment to drive previously inaccessible therapeutic cellular functions.

Mohana Roy, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Oncology
BioDr. Roy is a medical oncologist and a clinical assistant professor in the Stanford University School of Medicine Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology. She has expertise in Lung and Thoracic cancers, but with a broad clinical interest in oncology, including in Carcinoma of Unknown Primary (CUP).
Dr. Roy became an oncologist because of her passion for patient care. She is committed to being a clinician and is focused on improving the patient experience, given how the complex process of getting cancer care can be made a bit more seamless. She is the Associate Medical Director for Quality at Stanford Cancer Center from 2022.
She had led major efforts in the cancer program including starting standardized discharge follow up for patients after hospitalization, starting same day clinical care at the cancer center, and also expediting care for patients with an unclear diagnosis of cancer but with suspected imaging concerns.
Her research interests include access to clinical trials, quality improvement and improving care delivery. In that effort, she has published on work regarding patient reported outcomes (PROs), through distress screening with the Stanford Medicine Cancer Center, and in care for patient with limited English proficiency.
Dr. Roy received her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and then completed residency training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She then completed fellowship training in Hematology and Oncology at Stanford, where she was chief fellow. -

Alexandra Ruan
Clinical Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Alexandra Ruan is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pain and Perioperative Medicine at Stanford University. She obtained her undergraduate degrees in Public Health and History of Science at The Johns Hopkins University, and subsequently returned to California for medical school at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, where she graduated with a Distinction in Research in 2016. She completed her anesthesiology residency at Stanford University, where she was elected and served as Chief Resident during her CA-3 year.
Since graduating from residency, she stayed at Stanford Anesthesia, joining the Multi-Specialty Division (MSD), and completed an advanced clinical proctorship to join the liver transplant anesthesia group, a small select group of anesthesiologists within the MSD who also care for the patients undergoing liver transplantation.
Beyond clinical care, Dr. Ruan has authored several publications during her training, including most recently a review of anesthesia for robotic thoracic surgery, and continues to be involved in several scholarly projects. She has an interest in physician well-being, and is currently studying sleep disruption during resident night float. She also serves on the Stanford MD Admissions Panel as both a file reviewer and traditional interviewer.

Tope Rude, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Urology
BioDr. Rude is a board-certified, fellowship-trained urologist and pelvic reconstructive surgeon with Stanford Health Care Pelvic Health Center and the Stanford Urology Clinic. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Urology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Rude specializes in pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. She is skilled in male and female genitourinary (urinary tract and reproductive organ) reconstruction, complex voiding dysfunction (issues with urinating), and neurourology (bladder problems related to spinal injuries and neurological disorders). She offers the full spectrum of care for pelvic organ prolapse, customized for the individual patient, and including vaginal surgery, robot assisted surgery, mesh augmented repairs, hysterectomy and obliterative procedures. She also offers broad surgical options for urethral reconstruction, including novel minimally invasive techniques, open repair with graft augmentation, and robot assisted repairs. Robotic approaches to care for distal ureteral stricture disease, neurogenic bladder and urinary fistula allow her to provide excellent outcomes for patients.
Her research interests include improving patient-reported outcomes after pelvic organ prolapse surgery, as well as the medical and surgical management of neurogenic (nervous system based) bladder and complex voiding dysfunction. She has also studied the interaction between race and prostate cancer treatment among the veteran population. Her active research endeavors include clinical trial of a novel implanted peripheral neuromodulation device for urgency incontinence and multi-center studies of voiding dysfunction.
Dr. Rude has received numerous awards, including winning first place in the socioeconomic category of the American Urologic Association’s (AUA) New York Section Annual Valentine Essay Contest. She also won best presentation at AUA’s Veteran Affairs Forum. Dr. Rude received the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) Chemodenervation Grant and the National Institutes of Health/National Medical Association Travel Award.
Dr. Rude has published in several peer-reviewed journals, including Cancer, The Journal of Urology, and Urology. She has delivered presentations at the annual meetings of AUA and SUFU. In addition, she has presented at the World Congress of Endourology and Uro-Technology.
Dr. Rude is a member of AUA and SUFU. She is awas an inaugural fellow of the Well Black Woman Institute, which is part of The Foundation for Black Women’s Wellness in Madison, Wisconsin. -
Brian Ruhle, MD, MS
Clinical Assistant Professor, Surgery - General Surgery
BioDr. Ruhle is a board-certified surgeon with dual fellowship training in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery from Stanford Health Care and endocrine surgery from UCLA Health. He also serves as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Ruhle specializes in bariatric (weight loss) surgery, foregut (upper digestive tract) surgery, and abdominal wall reconstruction. He uses leading-edge laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques to help patients achieve sustainable weight loss and improve obesity related health conditions. His expertise in advanced minimally invasive procedures offers patients significant benefits, including faster recoveries, reduced pain, and shorter hospital stays.
Dr. Ruhle’s research interests span a wide range of topics in metabolic and bariatric surgery. His studies have explored combination therapy for obesity management, improved screening and treatment of endocrine disorders, and optimizing outcomes in thyroid and parathyroid surgery. He has published his findings in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Surgery, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Blood, and Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
During his surgical training, Dr. Ruhle presented at prominent national and regional meetings, including the annual meetings of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress. His presentations have addressed innovative topics such as using GLP-1 agonists (medications that help regulate blood sugar and reduce appetite) before bariatric surgery. His presentations have also addressed improving screening protocols for hyperaldosteronism (high blood pressure caused by the excess production of the hormone aldosterone).
Dr. Ruhle is a member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Clinical Association of California Endocrinologists, and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. -
Cristin Runfola

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Runfola's research focuses on the epidemiology of dysregulated eating and weight concerns in undeserved populations and her primary interest is in developing and testing the efficacy of clinical interventions designed to improve outcome for eating disorders.
With support from GFED, Dr. Runfola adapted the Uniting Couples in the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa (UCAN) therapy manual for couples in which one or both members have binge-eating disorder (UNITE) and recently completed pilot testing on this treatment. She is in the process of expanding this treatment for all couples affected by binge eating, and is submitting a grant to fund future work testing efficacy. -
Stephen Ruoss

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe have an active collaborative project examining basic and clinical aspects of non-tuberculous mycobacterial lung infection in non-immune compromised adults. Studies have examined possible cellular immune mechanisms for increased susceptibility to these infections, and are also investigating aspects of optimal diagnosis and treatment. In addition, a clinical and translational research program is investigating the causes and genetic factors underlying the evolution of bronchiectasis.

Christopher John Russell
Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Hospital Medicine)
BioDr. Russell is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine and a board-certified academic pediatric hospitalist at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. His clinical responsibilities include caring for children hospitalized for a variety of illnesses. His research focuses on developing evidence-based care for hospitalized children with medical complexity, including acute respiratory infections (such as pneumonia and bacterial tracheitis). His research efforts have been recognized through receipt of the University of Southern California’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s KL2 Mentored Research Career Development Award (2014-16), the Academic Pediatric Association’s Young Investigator Award (2015-16), the NIH Loan Repayment Program (2017-2021) and a large grant from the Gerber Foundation (2020-2022). In August 2021, he received a five-year R01 award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to study bacterial respiratory infections in children with tracheostomy. Outside of his clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Russell focuses on research mentorship of medical students, pediatric residents, and pediatric hospital medicine fellows as well as improving representation of underrepresented minorities in medicine throughout the continuum of physician training. Dr. Russell completed a term as the chair of the Academic Pediatric Association’s Membership, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee (2022-2025) and is on the Executive Committee for the Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings research network. Dr. Russell is active in the AAP and currently serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Hospital Pediatrics.

Tracy Rydel

BioTracy Rydel is Clinical Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine where she holds the positions of Assistant Dean for Clerkship Education and Director, Core Clerkship in Family and Community Medicine. She has also served as the Director of Medical Student Education in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health, and was an Educator-4-CARE faculty from 2017-2020. She is a family physician with a passion for medical education. She completed the Rathmann Family Foundation Fellowship in Patient-centered Care and Medical Education in 2012, was in the first wave of peer coaches in the Peer Coaching Program under the Stanford Teaching and Mentoring Academy, and was the Director of the Practice of Medicine Year One Course at Stanford from 2013-2016. She emphasizes patient-centered care in the pursuit of clinical and educational excellence. She is frequently an invited presenter at the national conferences of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), and the Western Group on Educational Affairs (WGEA) regional group of the AAMC; her scholarly work focuses on medical education endeavors, including equity and justice in systems of medical education assessment. Raya Saab
Lindhard Family Professor of Pediatric Cancer Biology
BioI am a pediatric oncologist, and I primarily treat children who are diagnosed with soft tissue sarcomas including rhabdomyosarcoma, and children diagnosed with the eye tumor retinoblastoma, as well as children with other solid tumors.
I have two very different areas of primary research interest, both of which I pursue with passion. One focuses on global oncology, including clinical and research resource capacity building towards effective treatment and improving outcomes of children with cancer worldwide. I work with collaborators across the globe towards a common goal of improving access to diagnostic and clinical care, training of multidisciplinary teams, and building clinical resources and research capacity to develop context-informed approaches to improving cancer care and achieving better outcomes for children diagnosed with cancer irrespective of where they happen to live.
My parallel research interest, which is the focus of my laboratory, is understanding oncogenic signaling in pediatric soft tissue sarcomas, in an effort to clarify the driving biology and determinants of metastatic disease, to uncover novel targets for more effective treatment. We use preclinical in vitro and in vivo models, including murine and human cell lines, and mouse models of cancer. We have recently uncovered a paracrine role for rhabdomyosarcoma-secreted exosomes in impacting biology of stromal cells. Rhabdomyosarcoma-derived exosomes carry specific miRNA cargo that imparts an invasive and migratory phenotype on normal recipient fibroblasts, and proteomic analysis revealed specific and unique pathways relevant to the two different molecular rhabdomyosarcoma subtypes that are driven by distinct oncogenic pathways. We identified that the driver oncogene in fusion-positive rhabdomyosarcoma, PAX3-FOXO1, modulates exosome cargo to promote invasion, migration, and angiogenic properties, and identified specific microRNA and protein cargo acting as effectors of PAX3-FOXO1 exosome-mediated signaling, including modulation of oxidative stress response and cell survival signaling. Our ongoing work is focused on interrogating specific paracrine signaling pathways and molecular mechanisms of metastatic disease progression in rhabdomyosarcoma, for potential therapeutic targeting. -

Zahra Sadat-Hossieny, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Adult Neurology
BioZahra Sadat-Hossieny, MD, is a board-certified neurologist who completed her fellowship in clinical epilepsy at Stanford University Hospitals and Clinics. She finished her residency in neurology at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She obtained her medical degree and a certificate in global health from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
She has extensive experience treating patients with epilepsy and currently provides care through the Comprehensive Epilepsy and Comprehensive Neurology Programs at Stanford Health Care. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Sadat-Hossieny also teaches future generations of clinicians as an assistant professor at Stanford School of Medicine in the Department of Neurology, Epilepsy, and Comprehensive Neurology.
Dr. Sadat-Hossieny has authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. She has presented her research orally and through posters at various conferences. During her fellowship at Stanford University Hospitals and Clinics, she used advanced diagnostic techniques including video-EEG monitoring, computerized brainwave mapping, diagnostic imaging, neuropsychiatric testing, and functional mapping to accurately diagnose epilepsy and conditions imitating epilepsy. She also gained expertise in the most advanced forms of epilepsy treatment including neuromodulation, epilepsy surgery and medications specific to epilepsy. Her research focused on the cognitive effects of anti-seizure medications on patients with epilepsy and their children. She has also published on the importance of nutrient supplementation on cognition in patients taking anti-seizure medications. Her collaborations include projects that assess and improve patients’ understanding of their own seizure types. -
Agustina D Saenz

BioAgustina Saenz is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree from the Universidad de Buenos Aires and completed her internal medicine residency, and later served as Chief Resident at Einstein Medical Center. She further pursued graduate studies at Harvard, earning a Master in Public Health from the T.H. Chan School of Public Health and a Master in Biomedical Informatics from Harvard Medical School. She also completed a Clinical Informatics fellowship at Mass General Brigham prior to joining the Stanford faculty.
Dr. Saenz’s work bridges clinical care, AI research, and health system operations. At Curai Health, she serves as a Senior Clinical Informaticist, focusing on optimizing large language models to improve diagnostic reasoning and patient safety. Her academic interests include the responsible deployment of AI in healthcare, evaluation of model generalizability, and developing system-level interventions to advance health equity. Prior to her current role, she served as Unit Medical Director and Chair of the Hiring Committee at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where she led initiatives to enhance quality metrics and foster inclusive hiring practices. -

He completed his medical degree at UC Irvine’s Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community, and he also obtained a Master’s in Public Health from UC Berkeley. After serving as chief psychiatry resident during his psychiatry residency at Stanford, he completed a fellowship in public psychiatry at UC San Francisco. His professional interests include fostering the next generation of diverse mental health providers and community advocacy.

As Co-Director of the Center for Peripheral Nerve Surgery, she oversees coordinated care in conjunction with the Neurology Clinic, Neurodiagnostic Lab, and Neurosurgery Clinic. She serves on multiple interdisciplinary teams focused on the care of patients with nerve conditions, including the Stanford Nerve Team, Stanford Facial Nerve Center, Stanford Women's Neurology Program, and Stanford Periprocedural Nerve Symptom Pathway.
She is an expert in the use of nerve and muscle ultrasound to diagnose and manage neuromuscular conditions. She performs advanced diagnostic evaluations of peripheral nerve conditions, integrating nerve and muscle ultrasound and neurophysiologic EMG/NCS testing at the bedside. She has advanced training in nerve and muscle ultrasound has served on the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM)'s Neuromuscular Ultrasound Committee and Neuromuscular Ultrasound Exam Committee.
She also plays an active role in graduate medical education. She serves as the Program Director of the Stanford Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship and Associate Director of the Clinical Neurophysiology/EMG Fellowship, with a total of five ACGME-accredited positions. She supervised residents in the weekly neurology resident continuity clinic for many years. She been awarded numerous teaching awards, including the Lysia S. Forno Award for outstanding contributions to resident teaching, and the American Academy of Neurology's A.B. Baker Teacher Recognition Award.
Dr. Sakamuri completed her undergraduate studies at Rutgers University, where she earned a degree in psychology with Phi Beta Kappa distinction. She completed medical school at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ, where she led multiple community service and medical education activities and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Societies. She moved to the Bay Area to pursue neurology residency at Stanford and served as Chief Resident in her final year of training. She then completed two years of fellowship at Stanford and the Forbes Norris MDA/ALS Research Center in EMG/Clinical Neurophysiology and Neuromuscular Medicine.
She is board-certified in Neurology and in Neuromuscular disorders by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). She is certified in EMG/NCS by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM), and holds the ABEM Certificate of Added Qualification in Neuromuscular Ultrasound. Khalid Salaheldin, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioKhalid Salaheldin, MD, holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor and serves as an interventional psychiatrist within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. His expertise lies in the specialized care of individuals who present with early psychosis.
At Stanford, Dr. Salaheldin's current responsibilities encompass a range of clinical activities, including evaluating patients with early psychosis at the INSPIRE clinic, where is is also part of the expansion team for INSPIRE 360. He provides care on the inpatient psychiatric unit and interventional psychiatry services as well. In addition to his clinical work, he is actively engaged in teaching, conducting research, and fostering collaborative learning among his patients and colleagues.
His treatment philosophy is a recovery oriented and compassionate approach evaluating vital underlying factors alongside pharmacotherapy & neuromodulatory interventions including: sleep, exercise, nutrition, mindfulness, therapy integration, underlying medical issues, substance use, psychosocial history, and importantly patients’ current relationships (including pets of course!). His approach focuses on meeting patients where they are at in their health journey, aligning treatment with their personal goals, and being actively present in their management.
Dr. Salaheldin’s research interests include early psychosis interventions, underlying medical causes of psychiatric symptoms, neuromodulation, community/global mental health, spirituality and mental health, novel psychiatric therapeutics, mental health parity & policy, and healthcare worker wellness through minimizing coding and documentation burden.
Before joining Stanford, Dr. Salaheldin served as the academic chief resident at Northwell Health, where his focus centered on designing a consult liaison service for patients experiencing a first episode of psychosis. This pioneering initiative aimed to provide compassionate support to patients and their families from the moment they arrived at the emergency room, throughout their inpatient stay, and during their transition to the outpatient setting. He hopes to continue this work on a local and global scale.

BioDr. Salles is a minimally invasive and bariatric surgeon. She completed medical school and residency in general surgery at Stanford prior to completing her fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at Washington University in St. Louis. She stayed on faculty at Washington University for three years prior to moving back to Stanford in 2019.During the pandemic, Dr. Salles has served as a disaster relief physician, caring for patients with COVID in the ICU. Dr. Salles obtained a PhD in education from Stanford University during her residency training, and her research focuses on gender equity, implicit bias, diversity, inclusion, and physician well-being. Her R01 grant from the NIH focuses on sexual harassment. She is a sought-after speaker and has given over 100 national and international invited talks related to gender equity, physician well-being, and weight bias. She currently serves as the Special Advisor for DEI Programs at the Stanford University Department of Medicine where she is a Clinical Associate Professor.

Giselle (Ghazal) Salmasi, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Hematology
BioDr. Salmasi is a board-certified, fellowship-trained hematologist. She treats patients in the Hematology Program and the Hematologic Cancer Program at Stanford Health Care. Dr. Salmasi is the associate clinical chief for classical hematology. She is also a clinical associate professor in the Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
She treats a wide range of blood disorders and blood cancers. Her clinical/research interests include immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (wAIHA). Dr. Salmasi understands that patients need social and emotional support along with medical care. She founded the earliest adolescent and young adult survivorship support groups in Santa Cruz, California, and Toronto, Canada. Dr. Salmasi is also dedicated to training future doctors in providing excellent hematologic care.
Dr. Salmasi was the medical co-investigator for a national phase 3 clinical trial of endovascular therapy for treating chronic venous thrombosis.
Her research has appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, Leukemia & Lymphoma journal and the Transfusion and Apheresis Science journal. Dr. Salmasi’s publications include articles and a chapter about lymphoma. She has also reviewed articles for the Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation journal and the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

BioVafi Salmasi, M.D., M.S. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, Division of Pain Medicine atStanford University School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2004 and completed hisanesthesiology training at Cleveland Clinic, where he also completed a research fellowship in the Department of Outcomes Research. He subsequently joined Stanford University for fellowship training in Pain Medicine and earned a Master of Science in Clinical Research and Epidemiology from Stanford in 2019.
Dr. Salmasi's research focuses on integrating pragmatic comparative effectiveness research with clinical care in perioperative and pain medicine, supported by his NIH funding. He is an active member of the neuromodulation team at Stanford Pain Management Center, where he has established and organizes the multidisciplinary team conference for neuromodulation candidates. Joshua Salomon
Professor of Health Policy and Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies
BioJoshua Salomon is a Professor of Health Policy, a core faculty member in the Center for Health Policy, and Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. His research focuses on public health policy and priority-setting, within three main substantive areas: (1) modeling patterns and trends in major causes of global mortality and disease burden; (2) evaluation of health interventions and policies; and (3) measurement and valuation of health outcomes.
Dr. Salomon is an investigator on projects funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, relating to modeling of infectious and chronic diseases and associated intervention strategies; methods for economic evaluation of public health programs; measurement of the global burden of disease; and assessment of the potential impact and cost effectiveness of new health technologies.
He is Director of the Prevention Policy Modeling Lab, which is a multi-institution research consortium that conducts health and economic modeling relating to infectious disease. Prior to joining the Stanford faculty, Dr. Salomon was Professor of Global Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Aaron Keith Salyapongse
Clinical Associate Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Salyapongse is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon. He is the medical director of Interventional Services, medical director of Joint Replacement, and chief of Orthopaedics for Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley. He is also a clinical associate professor at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Salyapongse performs the full range of orthopaedic surgery procedures to treat injuries and conditions related to the hip and knee. He has extensive training and experience in the diagnosis and use of advanced treatment techniques for disorders of the hip and knee, including meniscus tears, arthritis, avascular necrosis, and post-traumatic injuries.
Dr. Salyapongse does hundreds of knee and hip replacements annually. His goal with each patient is to help them recover quickly and safely, with durable, long-lasting joint replacements as a result. He specializes in tissuesparing techniques, including an anterior approach to hip replacement.
Dr. Salyapongse is a certified instructor of anterior hip replacement. He has performed more than 2,000 procedures and traveled nationwide to teach it to other surgeons. Anterior hip replacement offers the potential for faster recovery, as it involves a small incision that presents less of a disruption to the muscles. Dr. Salyapongse also specializes in techniques such as Anterior PATH, or percutaneous assisted total hip replacements.
For knee replacements, Dr. Salyapongse uses a variety of techniques, including robotic surgery. He also specializes in partial knee replacements for patients who may be experiencing arthritis in a localized area but who might not be ready for a full replacement. Partial replacements enable patients to have a faster recovery and a more natural feeling knee post-surgery.
Dr. Salyapongse welcomes referrals from specialists as well as primary care physicians. He sees patients at every stage of their care journey, but especially when their situation has progressed beyond interim interventions like physical therapy or injections. He views each of his patients as an individual with a unique set of goals and tailors each treatment plan to fit their specific needs. While Dr. Salyapongse will help patients first explore the alternatives, he may recommend surgery once activities of daily living
(like sleep, work, or gait pattern) have been impacted.
In an effort to make outpatient care more accessible, Dr. Salyapongse has helped to pioneer the use of digital technology to prepare patients before, during, and after hip and knee surgery. His passion is to improve patient engagement and thus outcomes by letting patients know what they can expect at every stage of their care journey.
Dr. Salyapongse has co-authored articles on a variety of topics related to techniques, technologies, and outcomes in joint replacement surgery. His work has appeared in the American Journal of Orthopaedics, Journal of Arthroplasty, Current Sports Medicine Reports, and other publications.
He has made presentations on hip and knee replacement planning and surgery at meetings such as the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and Western Orthopaedic Association.

Jacinda Sampson
Clinical Professor, Adult Neurology
BioDr. Jacinda Sampson received her MD and a PhD in biochemistry from University of Alabama at Birmingham, and completed her neurology residency and neurogenetics fellowship at the University of Utah. She served at Columbia University Medical Center prior to joining Stanford University Medical Center in 2015. Her areas of interest include myotonic dystrophies, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and neurogenetic disorders such as neurofibromatosis, hereditary spastic paraparesis, spinocerebellar ataxia, among others. She is interested in clinical trials for treatment of neurogenetic disorders, and in the clinical application of next-generation genomic sequencing to genetic testing.

Niyatee Samudra, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Adult Neurology
BioDr. Samudra is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is one of a small number of neurologists nationwide who is board-certified and fellowship-trained in epilepsy as well as in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry.
Dr. Samudra leads a clinic at Stanford for the treatment of older adults with epilepsy. In addition, she has clinical interests in the treatment of atypical Parkinsonism and in women’s brain health across the lifespan. She co-leads the CurePSP Center of Care and is a member of the Menopause Collaborative of Practice at Stanford. Her varied research interests include clinical trials in neurodegenerative disease and in epilepsy; improving treatment for older adults with epilepsy; understanding the cognitive and neuropsychiatric consequences of epilepsy; and treatment of neuropsychiatric symptoms in neurodegenerative disorders.
Prior to coming to Stanford, Dr. Samudra was a fellow in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, as well as in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She completed her undergraduate degree at MIT and obtained her medical degree and neurology residency training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

BioDr. Kelly Sanders is a Stanford pediatrician and the Technical Lead of the Pandemic Response Initiative at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Institute for Global Health Sciences. She completed a Master of Science and Doctor of Medicine at the University of San Francisco, California, and pediatrics residency training at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University. Before pursuing a career as a physician, Dr. Sanders worked with the UCSF Global Health Group’s Malaria Elimination Initiative (MEI) on operational research projects with partner countries, as well as on developing communications and advocacy priorities with MEI and global partners. Previously, she worked with the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences, supporting the creation of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health and the UC Global Health Institute. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Sanders is the Program Director of the Comprehensive Care Unit at Stanford where she teaches and works with inpatients with eating disorders. She has specialized in the treatment of eating disorders for the past 35 years at Stanford. She has written extensively and presented nationally on the subject of the evaluation and treatment of eating disorders and also in the field of child abuse, specifically in the area of Munchausen by proxy.
Dr. Sanders is also involved with an international outreach project in Ghana called Project Okurase. This project involved an annual medical health outreach in the village. The project is also creating a model village which includes the building of a medical clinic, vocational school, and homes for families that take in orphans. The project is also involved with bringing safe water, building compost toilets, and bringing solar energy to the village. -

Alexander Tarlochan Singh Sandhu

BioAlex Sandhu, MD, MS is a cardiologist with a special interest in the care of patients with advanced heart failure. He graduated from the seven-year combined BA-MD program at Northwestern with a focus on economics and mathematics. He completed an internal medicine residency at Stanford University, spending 16 weeks at Makerere Hospital in Uganda as part of the Global Health track. He subsequently earned a Masters in Health Services Research at Stanford while acting as a fellow in health services research at the Palo Alto VA and Stanford's Center for Health Policy/Primary Care and Outcomes Research. Next, he completed fellowships in cardiology and advanced heart failure and transplant at Stanford before joining the faculty as an Assistant Professor in Stanford Cardiology and the Stanford Prevention Research Center.
Alex is now an active clinician and clinical researcher who focuses on the implementation of high-value preventive strategies, comparative effectiveness, innovative clinical trial design, and health economics. He is passionate about testing patient-centered implementation strategies to bring meaningful improvements to patients’ lives and prevent disease morbidity. He is involved in several clinical trials including the K-23 funded PRO-HF (patient-centered quality of life assessments), DOT-HF (digital health study for HF patient activation), a CAC notification pilot trial (patient-centered coronary artery calcification notification), and PHARM-HF (testing strategies to improve HF management by pharmacists).

Gisela Sandoval
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences
BioDr. Gisela Sandoval is a physician scientist with dual board certification who specializes in medical-psychiatric illness caring for individuals that suffer from medical conditions at the interface of medicine and psychiatry, which often requires complex chronic care. In addition she treats children with a broad range of psychiatric disorders including neurodevelopmental disorders, ADHD and mood and anxiety disorders in adolescents. She has a thorough and comprehensive way to approach her patients; she considers not only the clinical symptoms but also the impact of the family structure and the functioning of the child at school. Dr. Sandoval has a special interest in establishing standard of care guidelines to address the needs of chronically ill children to promote healthy habits and medical treatment compliance that promote health and decrease the burden of chronic medical and psychiatric illness.
Dr. Sandoval graduated with honors from the California Institute of Technology where she performed research in brain physiology and evolution. She earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School where she also completed a Ph.D. specializing in molecular neurobiology and genetics. Dr. Sandoval completed her residency in general psychiatry at the University of Chicago, during which she received the NIMH Outstanding Resident Award. She went on to complete a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency of Columbia and Cornell Universities. After training she became the Clinical Director of the Warren Wright Adolescent Center at Northwestern University developing a successful clinical program focused on early identification and intervention for adolescents at risk of mental illness before moving to Stanford.
Dr. Sandoval scientific interests focus on understanding the molecular, neurophysiological and neural circuits that are responsible for healthy brain development and behavior and understanding how these are altered in the developmental neuropsychiatric disorders resulting in pathological behaviors with the expectation that that could lead to new treatments. Furthermore, she is interested in identifying quantifiable metrics of behavior to better diagnosis mental illness by exploring the use of physical activity monitors to help assess the effectiveness of medical therapies. -
Ryan Sandoval, M.D.
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Cardiovascular Medicine
BioDr. Sandoval is a board-certified cardiologist and a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Texas at Austin, where he continued on as chief resident before going on to complete his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the Medical University of South Carolina. Prior to his residency, he completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
His clinical interests include preventive cardiology and management of heart failure. He is particularly focused on treating patients with the complex clinical syndrome of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).
His interest in preventive cardiology grew through his participation in clinics for the uninsured and underinsured during his training. These experiences fostered his passion for understanding and addressing health care disparities. He is deeply committed to providing exceptional patient care with a personalized approach to treatment and improving the lives of his patients.

Rebecca Sands
Clinical Associate Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Sands currently serves as the Clinical Section Chief of Palliative Care at Stanford University, where she directly supervises 13 physicians and oversees the inpatient and outpatient clinical programs at Stanford Health Care. She graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 2001 with a BA in Chemistry. She then attended Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine from 2002-2006. She completed a residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Cambridge Health Alliance, a public teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. She went on to complete her Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) fellowship at the Harvard combined program at Massachusetts General Hospital/Dana Farber Cancer Institute in 2011. She spent 8 years at the University of Pittsburgh where she served as core teaching faculty and the HPM Fellowship Program Director. Since her recruitment to Stanford, her focus has been on programmatic expansion of clinical Palliative Care services across healthcare settings and throughout the trajectory of the serious illness experience. This has included recruitment of dually boarded faculty, development of an Emergency Palliative Care program, and many other new and innovative initiatives.

Steven Sanislo, MD

BioDr Sanislo has over 25 years of experience in clinical and surgical practice in retinal and vitreoretinal diseases. He is the senior vitreoretinal surgeon at Stanford and maintains a large clinical practice as well as teaching ophthalmology residents and retina fellows. He also participates in clinical research for varying retinal conditions. Dr. Sanislo received ophthalmology training as a resident here at Stanford, and received vitreoretinal training as a fellow at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

BioDr. Sanserino is a gynecologist whose work focuses on providing gynecologic care for cancer survivors, patients living with cancer, and at-risk women. She recognizes that patients who have faced cancer have unique gynecologic needs and she works closely with her colleagues in the Women's Cancer Center to provide sensitive, comprehensive gynecologic care for these women.
Some of the specific gynecologic symptoms that cancer survivors often experience include:
- Chemotherapy induced menopause
- Surgery induced menopause
- Management of menopausal symptoms with a history of hormone sensitive cancers
- Treatment of genitourinary symptoms of hormone blocking medications
- Decisions about decisions about oophorectomy (ovary removal) for breast cancer patients and women at high risk for breast cancer
- Discussions about family planning (fertility preservation, contraception, pregnancy) after cancer
- Sexual side effects such as lower libido, decreased arousal, and pain with intercourse
- Complications from Tamoxifen or Aromatase Inhibitor therapy
She is also a physician in the Menopause & Healthy Aging Program and works to help patients manage the symptoms of menopause and perimenopause, diagnose and treat female sexual dysfunction, and utilize lifestyle medicine to treat and decrease the risk of chronic conditions associated with aging. She is a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP).
She has been recognized as an outstanding medical educator, winning several awards for resident education. She is currently one of the assistant residency program directors for the OB/GYN residency. In addition to her office clinic work, she performs gynecologic surgeries and works with the OB/GYN residents to provide inpatient gynecologic care and perform emergency surgeries.
She has a background in community health work and quality improvement. She is committed to safe, equitable health care and has a patient-centered, evidence-based practice approach.

Calvin Santiago, MD, FRCPC, MSc (he/him)
Clinical Assistant Professor, Adult Neurology
BioDr. Santiago is a board-certified neurologist with Stanford Health Care. He is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences, Division of Comprehensive Neurology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Santiago diagnoses and treats a wide range of neurological conditions, including headache, epilepsy, memory disorders, movement disorders, and neuropathy. He has a special focus on improving access to neurological care, including reducing patient wait times and directing patients to the most appropriate care provider by streamlining physician referrals. He also provides LGBTQ+ care.
His research interests include executive functioning and processing speed in older adults with coronary artery disease and using CT angiography in patients with acute ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack. He has also researched speech-language changes in patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Santiago has published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, including Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy, Alzheimer’s & Dementia, and Cureus: Journal of Medical Science. He has presented to his peers at national and regional meetings, including the Society of Biological Psychiatry Annual Meeting, History of Medicine Days at the University of Calgary, and the Advanced Learning in Palliative Medicine Conference at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Santiago is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, Canadian Neurological Sciences Foundation, and Ontario Medical Association. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe study the organizing principles of the genome and how these principles regulate cell identity and developmental switches. We combine Biochemistry and Biophysical methods such as NMR and Hydrogen-Deuterium Exchange-MS with Cell Biology, and Genetics to explore genome organization across length and time scales and understand how cells leverage the diverse biophysical properties of chromatin to regulate genome function.
